  • This invention relates to locking mechanism andv particularly to locking mechanism for the doors of offices, homes and the like.
  • One object of my invention is to provide img mechanism which will upon closing of a door automatically lock it with a bolt lock. Another object is to provide means to hold the automatic locking mechanism in suspension which can be operated from the inside of la room upon turning of the inside door knob.
  • Another object is to provide two different door knob locks on the outside of the door operable independently of each other, making one lock adaptable to be ⁇ operated by a master key and non-pickable, while the other takes an individual key.

This invention relates to locking mechanism andv particularly to locking mechanism for the doors of offices, homes and the like.
One object of my invention is to provide img mechanism which will upon closing ofa door automatically lock it with a bolt lock. Another object is to provide means to hold the automatic locking mechanism in suspension which can be operated from the inside of la room upon turning of the inside door knob.
Another object is to provide two different door knob locks on the outside of the door operable independently of each other, making one lock adaptable to be` operated by a master key and non-pickable, while the other takes an individual key. Another object is to provide lockinglmeans to control the knobs, which may be moved to unlocking position by the insertion of the key, whereupon the mere rotation of the knobs actuates the door lock. Still another object is to provide mechanism t o accomplish the above enumerated purposes which operates with certainty, is relatively simple', and is so easy to assemble that unskilled labor may readily be taught to assemble the parts.
The foregoing and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and operative arrangement of parts such as is disclosed by the drawings. 'The nature of the invention is such as to render it susceptible to various changes and modifications,
and, therefore, I am not to be limited `to the construction disclosed bythe drawings; but am entitled to all such changes therefrom as fall withr in the scope of my claims.

Connected to said door 3| is an insiderdoorV knob 32 having an extension 33 in which a groove 341s cut and which extends all the way around 40 said extension 33. A rose 36 covers said extension 33 and a screw 31 passes through said rose 36 into the groove 34 in said extension 33, thereby holding said rose '33 to said knob 32; but in such a way that said knob may be rotated inde- 45 pendently of said rose. A thumb pin 33 extends l through said rose 36, leaving a projecting outside portion that can readily be pushed downwardly by the thumb of a person after turning the inside door knob 32 to prevent the bolt from 50 locking. A small spring 33 surrounds said thumb pin 38, being inside the thumb pin hole in the rose 36. Said thumb pin is held against removal bya wire 40 passingthrough a hole in one end of said pin 33.- Screws il-pass through said 53 sunk holes 62a.

A solid spindle 5@ extends from the inside 'door knob 32 through the door 3i to the outside door knob, screwed onto which spindle'is a collar 52 which abuts against the inside door knob rose 3b, being held in fixed position by a set screw 53. .ln said collar 52 is a groove 5d into which be moved when the spindle 5@ is turned to bring said groove 5! opposite said thumb pin 38. When in normal position said groove 5d is not alined with said thumb pin 38; but when it is desired to leave the door 3l unlocked and closed, as when a person is inside a room, turning of the inside knob 32 will bring them opposite each other, so that pressure on the thumb pin 36 causes it to enter said groove bril, to hold the locking mechanism in unlocked position. When the door knob and spindle have been ,turned to this position the turning has comforces said pin 33 against a wall of the groove Y 5d, to thereby hold it against further movement. r
To release it the knob is turned a trifle against the tension of the spring thereby moving the thumb pin away from the groove wall, with the result that the small spring 39 forces said thumb pin upwardly' to normal position, and, therefore,
whereupon the knob and spindle return to normal position, which is locking position.
On that end of said spindle 5@ that is on the outside of the door 3l is a coupling member 5l having an arcuate shoulder portion 58 and an arm 59 which extends beyond said shoulder 5d. Said coupling member 5l is held fast to said Whenever any knob is rotated the spindle 5@ is also rotated which rotates said coupling member 5T! until said arm of the hub portion [52. Said hub portion 52 extends from Within the outside door knob to a point adjacent 'the door 3i where it is screw threaded as at 63 into the rose d3 said hub t2 and abutting against the door 38 is a sleeve 65 having a square hole to receive the spindle 5@ so it will turn with said spindle, said sleeve having a groove 65a extending around it. A pin 65h extends through said hub t2 in an oi center position, and enters said groove 65m to hold said sleeve t5 in place, yet permitting free rotation withthe spindle 5d. Said hub $2' has a stop pin tl just beyond said wall Si, which is later referred to. The outside door knob consists of an outer portion 56 having a lug di fixed therein which contacts with the stop pin Sil' when the door is locked. Movement of the outer knob t@ moves said lug el which in turn moves said arm 59 and spindle 50. Within said .outer portion 6,6 of the outside door knob is a circular spiral spring 68, one end of which abuts of the outside doorknob.' Within to normally keep the mechanism locked. When the lock, later described, is moved to open position this spring 68 is compressed, and will, upon release, resume normal position unless held against movement as by the thumb pin 3&3 contacting against the wall of the groove 5d.
Extending into the knob outer portion t5 is an inner knob l@ having an extension plug 'il which is made integral with or permanently nxed to said inner knob lil. A key slot l2 extends through said inner knob lil and said plug 'll and is adapted to receive a key 'lll having teeth 'l5 of varying height. A small portion of said inner knob l@ overlaps said outer knob @d as shown at l@ in Figure l of the drawings, keeping said outer knob in place, and yet permitting its rotation.
In said hub portion 62 are holes it, in the closed end of which are springs lll, abutting against which are driver lock pins le, when in open position, as shown in Figure 3 of the drawings. In said extension plug ll are holes ttl having setting lock pins Si of varying length therein, which pins 8l rest in the recesses between the teeth l5 of said key ll when said key is in the slot l2. Insertion of said key lll pushes the pins 3i which are in the extension plug 'M against said pins l@ in the hub portion b2 forcing said pins l@ upwardly against the springs ll and out of said plug 'll so said plug can be rotated by turning said inner knob lil. The key remains stationary in said slot l2.
On the end of said plug il is a collar 8d having holes therein to receive a pin it which ex-s tends through said collar into said plug ll, a portion il of which projects beyond said collar and contacts with said arm e9, so that the turning of said inner knob lil rotates said arm 59 to thereby actuate the locking mechanism.
In the outer knob be are locking holes Sil, there being three shown in the drawings, below which is a key hole ill, inserted into which key hole is a key post e2 extending horizontally, over which a. hollow or tubular key 93 ts having teeth between which teeth is a recess 95 which is cut through the metal to meet the horizontal hole in the key which surrounds said key post 92 when the key is in place, which serves to prevent picking of the lock as movement of the center pin upwardly forces it into a hole it@ in the hub portion G2, which locks outer knob against any movement. Setting lock pins @l of varying length as shown in Figure 3 of the drawings enter said locking holes ad, resting upon diierent portions of said key Q3, the middle pin extending'- into said recess 95. In said hub portion d2 are the locking holes it@ having springs lill in the closed end of said holes tot. Driver lock pins M32 movably ht in said holes Mill, which the springs nel tend to force outwardly, so that said lock pins i532 enter said locking holes @il to thereby prevent rotation of the outer knob liti unless the key Q3 is inserted, which moves the pins upwardly so that the outer knob @t can be rotated :free o' said hub portion t2, thereby permitting the mechanism to be unlocked.
A door latch ltll is forced outwardly by a spring f m5 which is within a locking bolt it. A rod lill is connected to said latch ii within said bolt M36, moving in and out of said bolt M36 with the latch idd, said rod having a stop pin ltd. Around said rod itl is a locking sleeve H09 xed by a pin 09@ to said bolt ld, 4iiiliiwhich sleeve said rod slides horizontally, said sleeve extending outside the bolt lult, the outer end being divided into two parts ||2, thereby providing a slot I I between them in which said stop pin |08 moves.
VWhen said stop pin |08 reaches the end of said slot IIO it prevents further outward movement of said latch |04. Within-the tubular rod or cover 28 which is in the door 3| is an assembly casing which has holes ||6 to aline with the holes 29, through which the spindle 50 passes, and there is also a slot I I1. A pin I |8 in said bolt |06 extends into said slot ||1 thereby preventing rotation of said bolt and limiting its horizontal movement. In opening a door the initial movement forces the tapering portion of said door latch |04 against said latch cover I1, and
being tapered said door latch is caused to slide into the locking bolt |06 against the spring |05,
lto thereby free the door.
Near the end of said parts |I2 notches |20 are cut, into which springs |24, referred to later, slip when the bolt |06 is in open position. A ilexible cord |2| is fastened to said bolt |06 and extends to a housing |22 which has a hole |22aI at one end near its periphery to permit said cord |2| to slide therethrough. Said housing |22 has a collar |23 over which a coiled spring |25 ilts, which spring extends therefrom into said bolt |06 surrounding said locking sleeve |09, which spring |25 extends to force said bolt |06 and said housing |22 apart, to thereby force said bolt into locking position.
Within said housing |22 just back of said collar |23 are two springs |24 which partly close the opening through said housing |22. The two parts ||2 of the locking sleeve |09 force their way between said springs |25, spreading them apart, with the result that said springs pass into the notches |20, thereby holding the bolt |06 in open position.
One end of said cord |2| is fastened to a ring |26 having a channel |21 therein in which said cord |2| is wound. Said housing |22-has a cutout portion |20 in which said ring |26 is inserted, there being a 4hole through said housing |22 through which said spindle 50 passes. A stop lug |30 extends from said housing |22 into said cut-out portion |28 to thereby limit the Winding movementl of said cord |2| around said ring |26.
Next to said ring |26 is a small hub |32 an end of which extends through said ringy 26. Said hub |32 has a conical spring |32a attached to it, said spring also being fastened tothe side of said housing |22. |26 under tension supplementing the spring 68 in the outer door knob 66. Extending through said hub |32 is a square hole |33 through which the spindle 50 passes. Rotation of the spindle rotates said small hub |32 and the ring |26 so that when opening the locking mechanism said flexible cord |2| is wound around said ring |26 thereby withdrawing the bolt |06 from the door jamb. Said hub |32 has a skirt |34 extending about half way Varound it. A pin |35 projects from the said ring |26, and when it contacts with said lug |30 further rotation of the ring |26 is stopped. When the shoulder or end of said skirt |34 contacts with said pin |35 rotation of said hub .|32 rotates "said ring |26 to thereby wind the cord. When the knob is released the 'spindle 60 rotates said hub- |32 back to normal "position as said hub |32 is then free to rotate independently of said ring |26. When said cord is wound around said ring |26 the lock is open. Upon closing of the door the latch |04 contacts with the striker 2l, pushing said latch inwardly This spring keeps said ring- |24 spread until the notches |20 .have passed by permitting the bolt |06 to enter the door jamb.
In the modification shown in Figure of the drawings instead of using the springs |24 I substitute jaws |40 which are held in position by springs |4| fastened in recesses |42 in said housing |22. These jaws |40 are easily spread apart when the parts ||2 of the locking sleeve |09 pass between them.
The use of a exible connecting means such as said cord |2| makes it possible to use an extraordinary long bolt, so that attempts to unlock a door by prying it away from the door-jamb will be frustrated.
What I claim is:
1. Locking mechanism in combination with door knob means comprising an outer knob having an opening therein, an inner knob extending into and rotatable in said outer knob, said outer and inner knobs being adapted to rotate independently of each other, a spindle, locking instrumenatlities, part of which is adapted to enter a door jamb, connected to and operated by said spindle, said outer knob embodying means adapted upon rotation of said outer knob to rotate the spindle and thereby to actuate said locking instrumentalities, said inner knob embodying means adapted upon rotation of said inner knob also to rotate the spindle and thereby actuate said lockinginstrumentalities, said inner and outer knobs each having provision to receive unlocking means.
2. Locking mechanism in combination with door knob means comprising an outer knob having an opening therein, an inner knob extending into and rotatable in said outer knob, a spindle. locking instrumentalities, part of which is adapted to enter a. door jamb, connected to said spindle, means so positioned that rotation of said inner knob will rotate said spindle and thereby actuate the locking instrumentalitieasaid outer knob embodying a member adapted upon rotation of said `outer knob also to rotate the spindle and thereby actuate'said locking instrumentalities to move them to locking position, said inner and outer knobs having provision to receive unlocking means.
3. Locking mechanism in combination with door knob means comprising a rotatable outer knob having an opening therein, an inner knob extending into and rotatable in and independently of said outer knob, a spindle, locking instrumentalities part of which is adapted to enter a door jamb connected to said spindle, a coupling member carried by the spindle means to establish an operable connection between said inner knob and said coupling member whereby rotation of said inner knob will rotate said spindle, said outer knob embodying a member adapted upon rotation of said outer knob to cooperate with said coupling member and thereby rotate the spindle,
locking means connected to said outer knob to:
into and rotatable in said outer knob, locking instrumentalities extending into said opening part of which is adapted to enter a door jamb, said locking instrumentalities embodying a coupling member, a spindle extending into said locking instrumentalities, means xedly holding said spindle to said coupling member, said inner knob embodying means adapted upon rotation of said inner knob to actuate said coupling member, said outer knob embodying means adapted upon rotation of said outer knob to actuate said coupling member, said outer and inner knobs embodying locking means operable independently of each other, said outer and inner knobs having provision to receive unlocking means.
5. Locking mechanism in combination with door knob means, comprising a door knob for the inside of the door to be locked, an outer knob for the outside of the door to be locked, said outer knob having an opening therein, an inner knob extending into and rotatable in said outer knob, locking instrumentalities part of which is adapted to enter a door jamb, a spindle connected to said locking instrumentalities, said inner knob having means adapted upon rotation of said inner knob to rotate said spindle, said outer knob having means adapted upon rotation of said outer knob also to rotate said spindle, said outer and inner knobs each having a separate provision to receive unlocking means, and locking means in said locking instrumentalities and said inner and outer knobs so positioned that the said locking means for either of said outer and inner knobs may be actuated independently of each other.
6. Locking mechanism in combination with door knob means, comprising a-door knob for the inside of the door to be locked, an outer knob for the outside of the door to be locked, said outer knob having an opening therein, an inner knob extending intoand rotatable in said outer knob, locking instrumentalities part of which is adapted to enter a door jamb, a spindle connected to said locking instrumentalities, said inner knob having means adapted upon rotation of said inner knob to actuate said locking instrumentalities, said outer knob having means adapted upon rotation of said outer knob to actuate said locking instrumentalities, spring means abutting between said outer knob and said locking instrumentalities so positioned as to normally hold said locking instrumentalities in locking position, said outer and inner knobs having provisions to receive unlocking means, and locking means in said locking instrumentalities and said inner and outer knobs so positioned that the said locking means for either of said outer and inner knobs may be actuated independently ofeach other.
7. Locking mechanism in combination with door knob means, comprising a door knob for the inside of the door to be locked, an outer knob for the outside of the door to be locked, said outer knob having an opening therein, an inner knob extending into and rotatable in said outer knob, locking instrumentalities part of which is adapted to enter a door jamb, said locking instrumentalities embodying a hub and a coupling member in said hub, means adapted to hold said hub in xed position with relation to the door to be locked, a spindle extending into said hub, means to xedly hold said coupling member to said spindle, said inner knob having means adapted upon rotation of said inner knob to actuate said coupling member, said outer knob having means adapted upon rotation of said outer knob to actuate said coupling member, said outer and inner knobs having provisions to receive unlocking means, and locking means in said hub and said inner and outer knobs so positioned that said locking means for either of said outer and inner knobs may be a0- tuated independently of each other.
8. Locking mechanism comprising a spindle,
means connected to and adapted upon actuation to actuate said spindle, locking means operably connected to said spindle, a bolt adapted to enter a door jamb,' instrumentalities adapted to hold said bolt to said locking means when said bolt is moved to unlocked position, said locking means embodying a cord connected to said bolt, said locking means embodying a winding member on which said cord is adapted to be wound when said bolt is moved to unlocking position, and another member on which said winding member is mounted having a hole through which said spindle passes whereby rotation of said spindle rotates said other member, said Winding member embodying means to operatively connect with said other member whereby actuation of said other member may actuate said winding member, and spring means connected to said other `member adapted to normally hold said winding member in unwound position.
9. Locking mechanism comprising a locking bolt, a housing, locking instrumentalities in said housing, said instrumentalities embodying a cord connected to said boit, means connected to and adapted to actuate said instrumentalities, said instrumentalities embodying spring holding means, and a winding member for said cord, a latch in said bolt, means in said bolt adapted to normally keep a portion of said latch outside of said bolt, means in said bolt adapted to connect with and be held by said spring holding means when said bolt moves to unlocked position, and
means connected to said latch adapted upon actuation to release the connection between said spring holding means and said means in said bolt. t

a knob for the inside of the door to `be locked, means to ,operably connect said knob to said spindle, aknob for the outside of the door to be locked, a coupling member connected, to said spindle, means connected to said outside door knob adapted upon actuation of said knob to actuate said coupling member and thereby rotate said spindle, locking means operably connected to said spindle, a locking member adapted to enter a door jamb, flexible means extending from said locking member to said locking means and fastened to said locking member, said locking means comprising instrumentalities adapted upon actuation to draw said flexible means towards said locking means whereby said locking member is withdrawn from said door jamb, attaching means connected to said locking member adapted. to be held to said locking means when said locking member is drawn to unlocked position, a latch member in said locking member and extending beyond it, means connected to said latch member adapted upon actuation to enter said locking means and release said attaching means from said locking means.

A locking mechanism for a door comprising a door-knob for the inside of the door, a spindle secured to said door-knob and extending through the door, a locking bolt actuated by rotation o1' the spindle, a coupling member secured to the spindle, two concentric knobs on the outside of the door constituting an outer knob andan inner knob, each of said concentric knobs being rotatable independently of the other knob and each having a separate means for operatively-engaging and rotating said coupling member as the knob is rotated whereby the spindleV may be actuated by either the inner knob or the outer knob independently of the other, means for releasing the locking mechanism by rotation of the spindle and a separatekey-controlled locking means for each of the concentric knobs.
13. A locking mechanism for a door comprising a stationary hub member secured to the door and having an axial bore, a spindle extending into the hub, a locking bolt controlled by the spindle, an outer knob rotatable about the hub member, an inner knob rotatable in said axial bore independently of the outer knob, a coupling member fixed to the spindle, each knob having means for operatively-engaging and rotating the coupling member as the knob is rotated and a separate key-controlled locking means for each knob.
14. A locking mechanism for a door comprising a spindle extending through the door, means to rotate the spindle, a bolt adapted to enter a doorjamb, a hub secured to the spindle, a winding member mounted on the hub for limited rotation relative thereto, a cord connected at one end to the winding member and at the other end to the bolt whereby rotation of the spindle in one direction rotates the winding member to wind the cord thereon an-d thereby withdraw the bolt to its unlocked position, means to lock the bolt in its unlocked position and a spring acting on the spindle to return it and the hub to normal position when the spindle is released.
