FIGS. 1 through 5 illustrate one embodiment of a storage andtransport apparatus 100 for use with a fitness mat 10 (FIGS. 4 and 5 ). Theapparatus 100 includes an elongatetubular member 110, afirst endcap 120, asecond endcap 140, and astrap 160. - The elongate
tubular member 110 is shown inFIGS. 1 and 4 and has first andsecond ends tubular member 110 to be entirely hollow and have a generally round outer circumference (as shown), those skilled in the art will appreciate that other configurations may also be acceptable. For example, thetubular member 110 may be hollow only at theends tubular member 110 between theends 112, 114 (e.g., about thirty inches) may be selected based on the size of themat 10 that will be used with theapparatus 100, as will be more clear from the description below. In some embodiments (though not shown in the drawings), thetubular member 110 may be telescopic to allow a singletubular member 110 to be used with mats of different sizes. Thetubular member 110 may be constructed of various rigid materials, such as plastic, polyvinyl chloride, metal, and/or heavy cardboard. - The
first endcap 120 is shown inFIGS. 1 through 2 d, 4, and 5 and includes anattachment portion 122 configured to couple thefirst endcap 120 to thetubular member 110. For example, theattachment portion 122 may be frustoconical (as shown) such that theattachment portion 122 is complementary to thehollow end 112 of thetubular member 110, allowing theattachment portion 122 to be coupled to (i.e., received in) theend 112 in a pressure fit. In the embodiment shown, theattachment portion 122 may be received in eithertube end attachment portion 122 and thetube ends attachment portion 122 is only complementary to one of thetube ends attachment portion 122 to not be locked to thetube 110 through a clip, spring latch, or other locking device (and instead to simply be coupled to thetubular member 110 through a simple pressure fit), such locking devices may be included. Theattachment portion 122 is shown having asolid wall 123 a surrounding acavity 123 b, though thewall 123 a may (for example) include openings or a plurality of distinct walls, or thecavity 123 b may be omitted. - While the
attachment portion 122 extends from aninner side 125 a ofwall 125, thefirst endcap 120 may have aclip member 126 extending from anouter side 125 b of thewall 125. Theclip member 126 shown in the drawings is a female clip configured to receive amale clip 162 on the strap 160 (described below). As will be appreciated by those skilled in the art, different types of clips may be used for theclip member 126 and theclip 162, so long as the two are capable of interacting together. While theclip member 126 may be positioned in various directions, it may be desirable for theclip member 126 to be positioned such that theclip member 126 and/or thestrap clip 162 must move relative to each other in a direction generally parallel to thewall 125 to fasten together and release, as shown. - The
first endcap 120 also includes arestraining portion 128 extending from the wallinner side 125 a and adjacent thetubular member 110 when thefirst endcap 120 is operatively coupled to thetubular member 110. Therestraining portion 128 may be generally planar (as shown) or have various other configurations (e.g., cylindrical, rounded, etc), but a sufficient amount of space must be between therestraining portion 128 and thetubular member 110 for thefitness mat 10 to pass therebetween when wrapped around thetubular member 110 and be restrained from unwrapping. Though not shown, the distance between therestraining portion 128 and theattachment portion 122 may be adjustable, such as through a lockable sliding mechanism. As shown in the drawings, it may be desirable for therestraining portion 128 to extend generally parallel to thetubular member 110, though other embodiments may not be configured in this way. The length of therestraining portion 128 may also vary, so long as the restraining portion is capable of restraining themat 10 from unwrapping about thetubular member 110; it may be desirable, however, for therestraining portion 128 to extend further from thewall 125 than theattachment portion 122 extends from thewall 125. Thefirst endcap 120 may be constructed of plastic, metal, and/or any other appropriate materials. - Attention is now directed to the
second endcap 140, shown inFIGS. 1 and 3 a through 5. Thesecond endcap 140 includes anattachment portion 142 configured to couple thesecond endcap 140 to thetubular member 110. For example, theattachment portion 142 may be frustoconical (as shown) such that theattachment portion 142 is complementary to thehollow end 114 of thetubular member 110, allowing theattachment portion 142 to be coupled to (i.e., received in) theend 114 in a pressure fit. In the embodiment shown, theattachment portion 142 may be received in eithertube end attachment portion 142 and the tube ends 112, 114 may be configured such that theattachment portion 142 is only complementary to one of the tube ends 112, 114. Further, while it is currently preferred for theattachment portion 142 to not be locked to thetube 110 through a clip, spring latch, or other locking device (and instead to simply be coupled to thetubular member 110 through a simple pressure fit), such locking devices may be included. Theattachment portion 142 is shown having asolid wall 143 a surrounding acavity 143 b, though thewall 143 a may (for example) include openings or a plurality of distinct walls, or thecavity 143 b may be omitted. - While the
attachment portion 142 extends from aninner side 145 a ofwall 145, thesecond endcap 140 may have aclip member 146 extending from anouter side 145 b of thewall 145. Theclip member 146 shown in the drawings is a male clip configured to receive afemale clip 164 on the strap 160 (described below). As will be appreciated by those skilled in the art, different types of clips may be used for theclip member 146 and theclip 164, so long as the two are capable of interacting together. While theclip member 146 may be positioned in various directions, it may be desirable for theclip member 146 to be positioned such that theclip member 146 and/or thestrap clip 164 must move relative to each other in a direction generally parallel to thewall 145 to fasten together and release, as shown. - The
second endcap 140 also includes a restrainingportion 148 extending from the wallinner side 145 a and adjacent thetubular member 110 when thesecond endcap 140 is operatively coupled to thetubular member 110. The restrainingportion 148 may be generally planar (as shown) or have various other configurations (e.g., cylindrical, rounded, etc), but a sufficient amount of space must be between the restrainingportion 148 and thetubular member 110 for thefitness mat 10 to pass therebetween when wrapped around thetubular member 110 and be restrained from unwrapping. Though not shown, the distance between the restrainingportion 148 and theattachment portion 142 may be adjustable, such as through a lockable sliding mechanism. As shown in the drawings, it may be desirable for the restrainingportion 148 to extend generally parallel to thetubular member 110, though other embodiments may not be configured in this way. The length of the restrainingportion 148 may also vary, so long as the restraining portion is capable of restraining themat 10 from unwrapping about thetubular member 110; it may be desirable, however, for the restrainingportion 148 to extend further from thewall 145 than theattachment portion 142 extends from thewall 145. Thesecond endcap 140 may be constructed of plastic, metal, and/or any other appropriate materials. - Turning now to the strap 160 (
FIGS. 4 and 5 ), thestrap 160 has afirst end 161 with means for attachment to the first endcap clip member 126 (e.g., clip 162) and asecond end 163 with means for attachment to the second endcap clip member 146 (e.g., clip 164). While the firstendcap clip member 126 and theclip 164 are shown to be female clips, and the secondendcap clip member 146 and theclip 162 are shown to be male clips, various configurations and types of attachment devices may be used so long as the ends of thestrap 160 may be coupled to theclip members strap 160, such as a clasp, may also be included. Thestrap 160 may be constructed of cotton web, nylon, and/or any other appropriate material. - In use, the user may purchase (or otherwise obtain) the
fitness mat 10 and the storage andtransport apparatus 100 together or separately. Notably, theapparatus 100 may be used as an exercise system with any standard fitness mat that may be rolled up, so long as theapparatus 100 is appropriately sized. In other words, themat 10 does not need any special features to operate with theapparatus 100. To transport themat 10, themat 10 is first rolled about thetubular member 110, as shown inFIGS. 4 and 5 . Once themat 10 is wound about thetubular member 110, theendcaps tubular member 110 by theattachment portions attachment portion 122 may be received in thetubular member end 112 in a pressure fit, and theattachment portion 142 may be received in thetubular member end 114 in a pressure fit. When theendcaps tubular member 110, the firstendcap restraining portion 128 extends toward thesecond endcap 140 with a portion of themat 10 between the restrainingportion 128 and thetubular member 110, and the secondendcap restraining portion 148 extends toward thefirst endcap 120 with a portion of themat 10 between the restrainingportion 148 and thetubular member 110; this restricts themat 10 from unrolling. Thestrap 160 may be attached to theendcaps endcaps tubular member 110, the length of thestrap 160 may be adjusted using the clasp, and the user may simply carry theapparatus 100 and themat 10 by thestrap 160 without fear of themat 10 unwrapping or becoming permanently deformed.FIG. 5 shows themat 10 coupled to theapparatus 100 for transportation. - To separate the
mat 10 from theapparatus 100, theendcaps endcaps attachment portions portions mat 10 rolled about thetubular member 110, themat 10 may be unwound and separated from thetubular member 110. The ends 161, 163 of thestrap 160 may also be separated from theclip members - Many different arrangements of the various components depicted, as well as components not shown, are possible without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention. Embodiments of the present invention have been described with the intent to be illustrative rather than restrictive. Alternative embodiments will become apparent to those skilled in the art that do not depart from its scope. A skilled artisan may develop alternative means of implementing the aforementioned improvements without departing from the scope of the present invention. Further, it will be understood that certain features and subcombinations are of utility and may be employed without reference to other features and subcombinations and are contemplated within the scope of the claims. Further, various steps set forth herein may be carried out in orders that differ from those set forth herein without departing from the scope of the present methods. The description should not be restricted to the above embodiments, but should be measured by the claims.
