Description

    BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
  • This invention relates to storage compartments and drawers, more particularly, a drawer having a housing which is designed to be mounted between two studs in a wall so that the drawer is recessed in the wall and the face of the drawer is flush with the wall.
  • Additional storage space is always at a premium especially in smaller houses and condos where livable space is limited. The interiors of walls are the most underutilized areas in a home. Currently, the only devices which take advantage of the interiors of walls for storage are medicine cabinets. However, medicine cabinets are often too large to install at different locations around the home and/or the doors on medicine cabinets limit the locations where medicine cabinets may be installed around a home because of the way the doors open.
  • Thus, a need exists for an alternative method of storage that provides a maximum amount of storage space while occupying the least amount of livable space by utilizing the interior space of a wall and making this otherwise unusable space usable.

  • SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
  • The primary object of the present invention is to provide a recessed wall drawer which may be mounted between two wall studs.
  • Another object of the present invention is to provide a recessed wall drawer which may be mounted in new construction.
  • An even further object of the present invention is to provide a recessed wall drawer which may be mounted in preexisting walls.
  • Another object of the present invention is to provide a recessed wall drawer which provides additional storage space by utilizing the interior space of a wall.
  • The present invention fulfills the above and other objects by providing a recessed wall drawer having a housing which fits inside a wall and is mounted between two studs. The recessed wall drawer may be installed in new construction or in preexisting walls simply by cutting out a section of drywall between two studs at a desired location, securing the housing between two studs with fasteners such as screws and inserting the drawer into the housing. The drawer may be mounted in the housing via slides, which allow a user to open the drawer by sliding the drawer either slidably or by tilting outward from the housing, or by pivot points or hinges, which allow a user the open the drawer by tilting the drawer outward from the housing. The drawer may be installed and used anywhere in a home such as in a bathrooms kitchen, bedroom and so forth. In addition, multiple drawers may be installed on top of each other and/or next to each other to create a bank of drawers.
  • The above and other objects, features and advantages of the present invention should become even more readily apparent to those skilled in the art upon a reading of the following detailed description in conjunction with the drawings wherein there is shown and described illustrative embodiments of the invention.
  • BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
  • In the following detailed description, reference will be made to the attached drawings in which:
  • FIG. 1 is a front partial cutaway view of a recessed wall drawer of the present invention mounted in a wall between two wall studs;
  • FIG. 2 is a top perspective view of a recessed wall drawer of the present invention in an open position;
  • FIG. 3 is a top perspective view of an alternative embodiment of a recessed wall drawer of the present invention in an open position in which the drawer is mounted in the housing via pivot points; and
  • FIG. 4 is a side perspective view with a partial cutaway of an alternative embodiment of a recessed wall drawer of the present invention in an open position in which the drawer is mounted in the housing via a hinge.
  • DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
  • For purposes of describing the preferred embodiment, the terminology used in reference to the numbered components in the drawings is as follows:
  • 1. recessed wall drawer
    2. wall
    3. stud
    4. housing
    5. drawer
    6. movable attachment means
    7. slides
    8. handle
    9. pivot points
    10. hinge
    11. drywall
    12. fastener
    13. trim
    14. stop means

    16. guide stop
  • Referring now to the drawing figures, FIGS. 1 and 2 depict a recessed wall drawer 1 of the present invention. A housing 4 fits inside a wall 2 and is mounted between two studs 3. A drawer 5 is mounted in the housing 4 via a movable attachment means 6 such as slides 7, which allow a user to slide the drawer 5 out of the housing 4 via a handle 8. The recessed wall drawer 1 may be installed in new construction or in preexisting walls. To install, a user simply cuts out a section of drywall 11 between two studs 3 at a desired location. Then, the housing 4 is placed in the wall 2 between the two studs 3 and secured to the studs 3 with fasteners 12, such as screws, nails, etc. Finally the drawer 5 is attached to the housing 4 via a movable attachment means 6. Trim 13 surrounds the front of the housing 4 and creates a lip around the front of the housing 4 which sits flat against the surface of the drywall 11, thereby giving a finished look by covering up any gaps between the drywall 11 and the housing 4. The recessed wall drawer 1 may be installed and used anywhere in a home, such as in a bathroom, kitchen, bedroom and so forth.
  • Now referring to FIG. 3, a top perspective view of an alternative embodiment of a recessed wall drawer 1 of the present invention in an open position in which the drawer 5 is mounted in the housing 4 via pivot points 9 is shown. A housing 4 fits inside a wall 2 and is mounted between two studs 3, as shown in FIG. 1. A drawer 5 is mounted in the housing 4 via pivot points 9, which allow a user to open the drawer 5 by tilting the top of the drawer outward away from the housing 4 via a handle 8. A stop means 14, such as a block 15 or a guide stop 16, as shown in FIG. 4, may be attached to drawer 5 and or housing 4 to prevent the drawer 5 from opening past a certain distance. Trim 13 surrounds the front of the housing 4 and creates a lip around the front of the housing 4.
  • Finally, referring to FIG. 4, a side perspective view of an alternative embodiment of a recessed wall drawer 1 of the present invention in an open position in which the drawer 5 is mounted in the housing 4 via a hinge 10 is shown. A housing 4 fits inside a wall 2 and is mounted between two studs 3, as shown in FIG. 1. A drawer 5 is mounted in the housing 4 via a hinge 10, which allow a user to open the drawer 5 by tilting the top of the drawer outward away from the housing 4 via a handle 8. A stop means 14, such as a block 15, as shown in FIG. 3, or a guide stop 16, may be attached to drawer 5 and or housing 4 to prevent the drawer 5 from opening past a certain distance. Trim 13 surrounds the front of the housing 4 and creates a lip around the front of the housing 4.
  • It is to be understood that while a preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated, it is not to be limited to the specific form or arrangement of parts herein described and shown. It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made without departing from the scope of the invention and the invention is not be considered limited to what is shown and described in the specification and drawings.
