Abstract
A device for attaching to a wedge striking surface includes a detachable putter head. The detachable putter head includes a putter striking surface and an attaching surface. The attaching surface is for attaching to the wedge striking surface at an angle in the range from 45 to 60 degrees with respect to the putter striking surface.
Description
- This patent application claims the benefit of U.S. provisional patent application 61/092,131 filed Aug. 27, 2008, entitled “Detachable Putter Head” incorporated herein by reference.
- This patent application generally relates to a club for golf. More particularly it relates to a detachable putter head for an iron club striking surface. Even more particularly it relates to a detachable putter head for a wedge club striking surface.
- One aspect of the present patent application is a device for attaching to a wedge striking surface. The device includes a detachable putter head, wherein the detachable putter head includes a putter striking surface and an attaching surface. The attaching surface is for attaching to the wedge striking surface at an angle in the range from 45 to 60 degrees with respect to the putter striking surface.
- Another aspect of the present patent application is a golf wedge comprising a wedge club and a detachable putter head. The detachable putter head includes a putter striking surface and an attaching surface. The wedge club includes a wedge striking surface, wherein the attaching surface is for attaching to the wedge striking surface. The attaching surface is at an angle in the range from 45 to 60 degrees with respect to the putter striking surface.
- A method of playing golf includes providing a wedge and a detachable putter head, wherein the wedge includes a wedge striking surface. The method further includes attaching the detachable putter head to the wedge striking surface and using the wedge to putt.

wedge striking surface 20 includesdetachable putter head 22, as shown inFIG. 1 .Detachable putter head 22 includes putterstriking surface 24 and attachingsurface 26, as shown inFIGS. 2 a-2 d andFIGS. 3 a-3 e. Attachingsurface 26 is for attaching towedge striking surface 20. Attachingsurface 26 is at an angle in the range from 45 to 60 degrees with respect to putterstriking surface 24, as shown inFIG. 3 b. - In one embodiment the angle is about 55 degrees which allows for use on a range of wedges, as shown in
FIG. 3 b. - In the embodiments shown in the figures,
detachable putter head 22 includesmagnets 30 a-30 b, as shown inFIGS. 4 a, 4 e andFIG. 5 a. Attachingsurface 26 attaches towedge striking surface 20 withmagnets 30 a-30 b.Magnets 30 a-30 b are connected to attachingsurface 26 with screws. In one embodiment, in formingdetachable putter head 22 plastic is injection molded to holdmagnets 30 c-30 d in place on attachingsurface 26. Different sized magnets can be used.Magnets surface 26. Otherrecessed regions 32 can be provided to reduce the weight and cost ofdetachable putter head 22. Other schemes for attachingdetachable putter head 22 can be used, including a strap, an elastic band, and a clamp. -
Wedge striking surface 20 has an area, and attachingsurface 26 covers at least 40% of that area whendetachable putter head 22 is mounted towedge striking surface 20. - In one embodiment,
detachable putter head 22 includesplastic portion 36, as shown inFIGS. 4 a-4 e andFIG. 5 a-5 b.Plastic portion 36 can include polycarbonate. In this embodiment putterstriking surface 24 includesmetal strike plate 38, such as aluminum, stainless steel, brass, titanium, and alloys.Metal strike plate 38 is adhesively attached toplastic portion 36. A double stick adhesive tape (not shown) can be used. - In another embodiment,
detachable putter head 22 is fabricated entirely of a metal, such as aluminum, stainless steel, brass, titanium, and alloys, as shown inFIGS. 3 a-3 e. - Wedge 40 has
wedge leading edge 42, anddetachable putter head 22 includesskid stops wedge leading edge 42. Two points of contact providedetachable putter head 22 firmly held in position againstwedge leading edge 42. Pair ofmagnets - A method of playing golf includes providing
wedge 40 that includeswedge striking surface 20, attachingdetachable putter head 22 towedge striking surface 20, and then usingwedge 40 to putt. In one embodiment a magnet is used for attachingdetachable putter head 22 towedge striking surface 20. A strap, an elastic band, and a clamp can also be used. - While the disclosed methods and systems have been shown and described in connection with illustrated embodiments, various changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Claims (18)
1. A device for attaching to a wedge striking surface, comprising a detachable putter head, wherein said detachable putter head includes a putter striking surface and an attaching surface, wherein said attaching surface is for attaching to the wedge striking surface, wherein said attaching surface is at an angle in the range from 45 to 60 degrees with respect to said putter striking surface.
2. A device as recited in claim 1 , wherein said angle is about 55 degrees.
3. A device as recited in claim 1 , further comprising a magnet, wherein said attaching surface is for attaching to the wedge striking surface with said magnet.
4. A device as recited in claim 3 , wherein said attaching surface includes said magnet.
5. A device as recited in claim 4 , wherein said attaching surface includes a plurality of magnets.
6. A device as recited in claim 5 , wherein said attaching surface includes a first magnet and a second magnet, wherein said first magnet is larger than said second magnet.
7. A device as recited in claim 1 , wherein said wedge striking surface has an area, wherein said attaching surface covers at least 40% of said area when said detachable putter head is mounted to the wedge striking surface.
8. A device as recited in claim 1 , wherein said detachable putter head includes a plastic portion.
9. A device as recited in claim 8 , wherein said plastic portion includes polycarbonate.
10. A device as recited in claim 1 , wherein said putter striking surface includes a metal portion.
11. A device as recited in claim 10 , wherein said metal includes one from the group consisting of aluminum, stainless steel, brass, titanium, and alloys.
12. A device as recited in claim 10 , wherein said detachable putter head includes a plastic portion, wherein said metal portion is adhesively attached to said plastic portion.
13. A device as recited in claim 10 , wherein said detachable putter head is fabricated entirely of a metal.
14. A device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the wedge has a leading edge, wherein said detachable putter head further comprises a skid stop, wherein said skid stop contacts the wedge leading edge and wherein said detachable putter head is held in position against the wedge leading edge.
15. A device as recited in claim 14 , wherein said skid stop has two points of contact with the wedge leading edge.
16. A golf wedge comprising a wedge club and a detachable putter head, wherein said detachable putter head includes a putter striking surface and an attaching surface, wherein said wedge club includes a wedge striking surface, wherein said attaching surface is for attaching to the wedge striking surface, wherein said attaching surface is at an angle in the range from 45 to 60 degrees with respect to said putter striking surface.
17. A method of playing golf, comprising:
a. providing a wedge and a detachable putter head, wherein said wedge includes a wedge striking surface;
b. attaching the detachable putter head to the wedge striking surface; and
c. using the wedge to putt.
18. A method as recited in claim 17 , wherein said attaching is with a magnet.
