Thebraces 3′ are preferably formed from metal, such as steel. - The
inner section 86 of eachbrace 3′ comprises alower portion 86 a that is pivotally connected to theadjacent leg 2′, anupper portion 86 c that is pivotally connected to theouter section 88 of thebrace 3′, and adogleg portion 86 b between the lower and upper portions. Due to the curvature of thedogleg portion 86 b, thelower portion 86 a is laterally offset from and parallel to theupper portion 86 c. - In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the
outer section 88 of eachbrace 3′ is formed from a single piece of sheet metal that is folded to form anouter flange 88 d on one side of the fold and an upperinner flange 88 c and a lowerinner flange 88 b on the other side of the fold. Aspace 88 a separates the upperinner flange 88 c from the lowerinner flange 88 b. Theupper portion 86 c of the of theinner section 86 is sandwiched between theouter flange 88 d and the lowerinner flange 88 b of theouter section 88. Thepin fastener 89 passes through the lowerinner flange 88 b of theouter section 88, theupper portion 86 d of theinner section 86 and theouter flange 88 d of theouter section 88. Apin fastener 90 passes through the upperinner flange 88 c and theouter flange 88 d and into theadjacent frame rail 83 to pivotally connect theouter section 88 to theframe rail 83. - As shown in
FIG. 20 , when thebrace 3′ is in the folded position, thedogleg portion 86 b of theinner section 86 of thebrace 3′ passes through thespace 88 a When thebrace 3′ is in the extended position (FIGS. 19 and 21 ), anotch 86 d in theupper portion 86 c of theinner section 86 engages astopper pin 88 e disposed between the lowerinner flange 88 b and theouter flange 88 d of theouter section 88. Thestopper pin 88 e prevents theinner section 86 from rotating past a parallel alignment with theouter section 88. - As shown in
FIG. 22 , when thelegs 2′ are in the collapsed position, one pair of thelegs 2′ is interdigitated with the opposing pair oflegs 2′. In this configuration, theinnermost leg 2′ of each pair of legs is separated from theadjacent side rail 83 by theoutermost leg 2′ of the opposing pair of legs. The two support braces 3′ connected to the twoinnermost legs 2′ are referred to herein as inner braces, and the twobraces 3′ connected to the twooutermost legs 2′ are referred to herein as outer braces. - The
outer section 88 of eachinner brace 3′ is pivotally connected to theadjacent side rail 83 by way of anextension bracket 94 that is preferably L-shaped. Theextension bracket 94 includes a vertical portion that is pivotally connected to theouter section 88 of theinner brace 3′ by thepivot fastener 90. A horizontal portion of theextension bracket 94 is securely fastened to theadjacent side rail 83, such as by welding. As shown inFIGS. 21 and 22 , when the opposing pair oflegs 2′ are collapsed, one of thelegs 2′ lies between the vertical portion of theextension bracket 94 and theadjacent side rail 83. With this arrangement, when thelegs 2′ are in the collapsed position, thelegs 2′,support tubes 96,arcuate braces 95, articulated support braces 3′ andside rails 83 are all substantially coplanar and disposed within thespace 82 between thelips 81 of the table top. In this way, the table 9 occupies a very flat and compact envelop for stacking and storing. - The foregoing description of preferred embodiments for this invention have been presented for purposes of illustration and description.
