Description

July 23, 19-35. L SWANSTROM 2,009,302
EMASCULATING FINGERS Filed May 4, 1934 INVENTOR LARS SWANSTROM y Attorney Patented July 23, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application May 4, 1934, Serial No. 723,979 In Canada October 19, 1933 1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in an emasculating instrument. Its primary object being to provide an instrument for severing the spermatic cord of an animal. 7
A further object of the invention is to provide an emasculating instrument having means thereon preventing the spermatic cord from slipping out of the grip of the severing jaws of the instrument.
A still further object of the invention is to provide such an instrument having leveragemeans urging the jaws of the instrument together.
With these and other objects in view that may appear while the description proceeds the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically set forth, claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing forming part of this application and in which- Fig. 1 is an elevational view of my invention.v
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
Referring more in detail to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views it will be seen the invention comprises a pair of oppositely disposed co-operating jaws l9 which are pivotally joined together by a pivot pin ll through the protuberances I2 formed at the junction of the said jaws with the shanks I3. The lower ends of the shanks are pivotally connected to lever handles M by the pivot pins i5, and the said lever handles l4 are pivotally connected to each other by a pivot pin it through the protuberances ll formed near the upper end of the said lever handles.
The jaws H) are edge 58 surface it) and near one side thereof the jaws are two inverted L shaped projections 20 forming guides. These guides are positioned one on each jaw and arranged to engage each other with a sliding motion as the jaws are brought together.
widened toward their cutting as shown in the plan. On the upper.
When the device is fully opened the guides are designed to be engaging each other as their edges 2! extend beyond the cutting edges IS.
The guides are provided on the device to enable the operator to feel when the cord is in position between the jaws and also to prevent the said cord from slipping out from the ends of the said jaws when they are closed to sever the cord.
From the foregoing it will be seen that in operation the jaws are opened by the lever handles and the cord placed between the cutting edges of the jaws with the guides bearing lightly against the same. The operator will give a slight lateral pressure to the instrument to bring the cord to bear against the side of the guides, pressure is then exerted on the lever handles and the cutting edges urged together.
It is believed that the construction and advantages of the structure shown may be apparent from the foregoing paragraphs taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing without further detailed description.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been disclosed it is understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of cooperating elements may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
An emasculating instrument comprising a pair of pivoted jaws having opposed co-acting cutting edges, guide members extending upwardly from the upper surfaces of the jaws adjacent the cutting edges thereof, having lateral extensions projecting over and beyond the cutting edges of the jaws and disposed in overlapping sliding relation, said extensions being of such length they contact at all times, and means for actuating said jaws to move the cutting edges towards and away from each other.
