IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR TWISTING YARN INTO HANKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,917, dated March 5, 1878 application filed January 26, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, BENJAMIN S. JENNINGS and AZA JENNINGS, of Sullivan, in the county of Monltrie and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Device for Twisting Yarn into Hanks, of which the following is a specification In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a top view, Fig. 2 a vertical longitudinal section on line m m, Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a vertical transverse section on line y 3 Fig. 2, of our improved device for twisting yarn into hanks.

The object of this invention is to furnish, for the purpose of twisting the hanks or skeins of yarn, an improved device of simple construction by which any number of twists can be given to the hanks in a uniform, quick, and easy manner, the device being worked with great facility, even by a child, and is of cheap and simple construction, as it dispenses with all frame-work, treadle, 850.

The invention consists of a spiral wire secured in fixed position to a closed box, and revolving a twisting-rod, that is moved by a spirally-grooved section along the spiral wire. The twisting-rod has a hook for the hank at one end, and a weighted cord at the other end, by which it is returned after the twisting operation is accomplished. A pin that passes through the holes of the box and the spiral guide'wire regulates the twisting of the hank.

Referring to the drawing, A represents a box provided with a lid, which may be attached in any suitable manner. The box is screwed or otherwise attached to a table or other suitable point of support, and provided at one end with a perforated guide-plate, a, for the twisting-rod B, and at the opposite open end with a pulley, b, over which the weighted cord d passes, which is attached to the inner end of the rod B. The outer end of the twisting-rod is bent into hook shape for putting on the hank.

At the inside of box A is arranged a fixed of referen indicate correspiral guide-wire, 0, along which the spirally grooved section D'of the twisting-rod travels when the latter is drawn forward. The twisting-rod receives thereby a revolving motion until the grooved section arrives at the end of the spiral guide-wire.

The extent of motion of the twisting-rod, and consequently the number of rounds of twist, is regulated by a stop-pin, c, that passes through holes of the lid and bottom of box and through the fixed'spiral Wire.

The hank or skein of yarn is placed at one end on the hook of the twisting-rod, and taken hold of by the hand at the other end, being then drawn forward until the twisting-rod is drawn out as far as the stop-pin will admit. The hank is then doubled back, removed from the hook, and one end tucked into the other, and finally placed into the press, in the usual manner. The twisting-rodis then carried back by the weight, and the device ready for the next hank.

This device may be used at any convenient place, as it takes up little room. As the working parts are closed, nothing can be caught by the mechanism, which is worked with safety, facility, and dispatch.

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A device for twisting yarn into hanks, consisting of a suitable guide box or frame, a fixed spiral guide-wire, and of a twisting-rod having spirally-grooved section, outer hooked end, and opposite weighted end, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. The combination of guide-box A, having fixed spiral guide-wire C,With twisting-rod B, having spirally-grooved section D, and with stop-pin e, passing through box and spiral wire, to regulate the number of rounds of twist, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
