July 16, 1935. o. FISHER PORTABLE DRAFTING TABLE Filed Nov. 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 a Patented July 16, 1935 PATENT ,QF'Fi KJi PORTABLE DRAFTING TABLE- Oswald Fisher, Manchester, Conn. v I Application November 25, 1932, Serial No. 64'4,264' 1Q 4 Claims. (01. 33-30) My invention relates to improvements in drafting tables, which may be easily transported from efficiency. and may be collapsed to arvery neat package for convenience in carrying and storing.
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In theaccompanying drawings which illustrate my invention:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the adjustable draft ing table set up in a working position.
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail of one end of the straight edge.
Figure 4 is a plan of the back of the drafting table with the legs collapsed.
Figure 5 is a view looking at the top edge of the table in condition for storing or transporting.
Figure 6 is an enlarged section on line 3-3 of Figure 4. r V
Figure 7 is an enlarged section on line 2-2 of Figure 4. Similar characters of reference designate similar parts in the different views.
The drafting table comprises a wood top 4 and adjustable legs 5 and 6. The top 4 has in its back surface grooves 1, 8, 9 and I completely housing the harness arrangement to which the straight edge H is secured and retained in a parallel position in relation to table edge as the straight edge slides over the table top.
The drafting board top, as shown in Figures 1, 2, 4 and consists of several pieces tongued, grooved and glued with end cleats l2 tongued, grooved and glued thereto. On one long edge and near the corners of the top are fastened with screws two metal brackets l3 and It, in which are pivoted the adjustable wood legs 5 and 6. These legs are free to turn in said hangers about the screws I5 and I6 and be clamped in alinement with the top, or in any angular position from the top edge within the limits of the slot 11 in the leg 5, by the thumb nut 18, bolt I9 and washer 20. The slot H in the leg 5 is of a width to permit the free movement of the clamping bolt 19, thus not only allowing a free sliding action, but also a slight side motion at any point of the slot so that the legs may be set at various angles to each other, to bring the bearing seats of the legs at different distances from the top edge of the table and readily finding a good four point bearing when the table: is
mounted on an uneven surface.
'The top has secured on the corner of the edge, opposite tothe leg mountings, two pieces of cushioning material, such as pebbled rubber 2 1 ,these K surface they harness cord anchor plates 25. As
shown in Figures 3 and 4,'thecord32 is threaded through the countersunk guide holes 26 in the anchor plates 25 which not only help to secure the cord, but aline the cord under the clamping screw 21 and washer 28. To adjust the straight edge parallel to the boards edge, one of the screws 21 is loosened, the plate 25 slipped along the cord and secured in the desired position.
34 (Figure 7) denotes one of four deep grooved sheaves positioned in each corner of and under the surface of the board, to carry the harness cord, sunk into the board to avoid any interference to storage or drafting. The sheaves turn freely on the screw studs 29 which are firmly held in the board by the shoulder of said screw, the clamping washer 30 and the nut 3|.
The-tension of the cord 32, Figure 4, is retained fixed by the spiral spring 33, this cord and spring as well as all parts of the harness hang completely housed within the under surface of the board.
What I claim is:
1. A portable drafting table comprising a board having edge recesses formed in one face and located at opposite ends thereof and diagonal recesses formed in said face and eachconnecting opposite ends of said edge recesses, a continuous flexible member positioned within said edge and diagonal recesses, supporting means for said continuous flexible member, a straight edge positioned upon the opposite face of said board and provided with offset end portions overlying portions of the edge recesses, and means carried by the offset end portions of saidstraight edge and located substantially within the plane of the edge recesses for clamping said continuous flexible member to each offset end portion.
2. A portable drafting table comprising a board having one continuous plane surface and having the opposite face thereof provided with edge and diagonal recesses extending below the normal plane of said face, said diagonal recesses each communicating with opposite ends of said edge recesses, a sheave located adjacent to the point of connection of each diagonal recess with one 7 of said end recesses and so positioned as to sup port a continuous flexible member located within said diagonal and end recesses, aicontinuous flexible member positioned within said diagonal 0 and endrece's ses and movably supportedby said sheaves, a g 'straight edge positionedlupon and adaptdfor straightline rectilinear movement relative to the continuous plane surface of said board, said straight edge being provided atop posite ends thereof with offset. portions extend ing substantially within the common plane of A dr" fting table comprising a board having [,a ntinuous plane front surfa e and a rear jsur-' fjac tifvmedjwahjopen edge anddiagonal res formedlthereinsaid openedge recesses beg lo'cated' at opposed ends of said board and h'aving 'tne'op'posite ends' t ereof connected by sa id open diagonal recesses; .rneanslocated adjacenttofthe point of 'connection offeach edge re- Ilcess with sheer Isaid ,diago'nalrc esses for suporting a et tm bus flexible member for travel long ajclosedipathi formedlby said edge and iaeeee i e e l s r h ed eje ideh v m ed upon the continuous plane front surface of said board and provided with offset end portions extending substantially within the plane of said recesses, and means carried by each of said of!- set end portions for clamping said offset end portion to said continuous flexible member throughout substantially the entire extent of said offset end portion, whereby substantially complete uniformity of movement of said straight edge is insured upon movement of said continuous flexible member about'its supporting means? ii A'por'tablenrafting table comprising opposite plane surfaces spaced from each other a substantially uniform distance throughout the major portions of their extent, one of said surfaces "being continuously plane throughout and the other'of saidsurfaces being provided with open recesses located. adjacent its opposite ends and at a" uniformspeed within both of said 'eindfijecesses upon ,movementof said flejxible member along the path defined by said recesses'j l means providing rollingsupports for said flexible mem V ber, a straight edge mounted upon the continuously planesurface of" said table and p'rovided with end portions extendingsubstantiallvwlthin fthe plane of said recesses, and mean s 'calj ediby eac ioffsetend portion of said straight edgefor securing'the same to'saidfilexiblefmeinber at spaced points whereby variations in th angular "movement'oi saidstraight edgej relative to the plane surface of said table are avoidedfi i QIQSWALD FISHER-
