A collar 24 is adjustably ated therewith. secured to the closure member and is adapted is adjustably secured in the member 26 and a- The member 26 is provided with a bore 32 ex-- tending substantially its entire length and of a diameter smaller than the inside diameter of the cylinder I 0. A tubular plunger 34 operates Within the bore and is adapted to have a close fitting engagement therein, the surfaces of the bore and the outside surface of the plunger being machined to exact dimensions. A spring 36 fits within the bore 32 and extends within the tubular plunger 34. The end wall 38 of the member 26 and the wall 40 of the plunger serve as bases to limit the extension of the spring. For holding the plunger 34 within the bore 32 against the action of the spring, but at the same time to allow the plunger to have movement therein, a pin 42 groove 44 is provided in the plunger longitudinally thereof, ending however at 45. This allows the plunger to have reciprocating movement therein but prevents its release as the pin engages the end 45 of the groove. The action of the spring 36 tends to keep the plunger always in extended position, that is, extending within the piston chamber defined by the cylinder I II.
Extending the entire length of the member 26 is a duct or passage 46 of small diameter the greater part of its length and of a somewhat larger diameter designated 48 at the portion through the wall 38. Sloping sides 50 join the larger opening with the smaller and are adapted to have located adjacent thereto the pointed end 52 of the regulating screw 54. A passage 55 connects the opening 48 with the bore 32 so that [any pressure fluid within the bore can be forced through the restricted opening formed by the regulating screw 54 and be conducted into the piston chamber. .By varying the size of the restricted opening, which is accomplished by screwing inward or outward the screw 54, the flow of fluid out of the bore can be regulated. Also related in operation to this structure are passages 56 and 58, formed in wall 40 of the plunger, which also form a conduit from the bore 32 to the piston chamber. However, this means of escape for the pressure fluid is closed when pressure within the bore forces the ball 60 into engagement with its seat, thus closing passage 56. A spring 62 tends to hold the ball down against its seat, thus constituting a check valve.
As previously explained the actuating fluid is forced under pressure into either pipe 64 located at the right end of the cylinder, or pipe 66 located at the opposite end, by means of a control valve depending on whether the turret slide is to be retracted or moved forward into cutting position. Assuming for the purpose of illustration that the turret slide is-to be retracted to index a turret one station, oil which preferably forms the pressure fluid, is therefore forced under high pressure into pipe 64 and into the piston chamber to the right of the piston l2, thus forcing the piston to the left, as viewed in Figure -1. The piston has opportunity to acquire a rapid speed up to its engagement with the plunger 34. which thus allows the slide to have a rapid retracting movement for part of its stroke, until it begins toindex as described. For this the speed of the piston must be cut down, which is accomplished by movement of the plunger 34 to the left. The oil within the bore 32 and the hollow portion of the plunger is put under. compression which consequently closes the check valve 66 and allows the oil to escape only through the restricted opening 50. The size of opening 50 is so regulated that the necessary decrease in speed of the piston l2 can be accurately secured.
The piston upon reaching the end of its stroke in its travel toward the left is then forced back again by oil under pressure issuing from pipe 66, the supply in pipe 64 being cut off.
The plunger, however, with the piston in its left hand position is located within the bore 32 and is forced out by spring 36 as soon as piston l2 moves to the right. Valve 60 is so constructed that pressure on the outside will unseat the ball allowing the oil to flow within the plunger and the bore. During this movement of the piston l2, that is, to the right as viewed in Figure 1, the piston will have an unrestricted course and will so attain a rapid speed giving to the turret slide consequently a rapid speed for its forward movement.
It is to be understood that I do not wish to be limited by the exact embodiment of the device shown, which is merely by way of illustration and not limitation, as various and other forms of the device will of course be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.

In a fluid pressure mechanism, in combination, a cylinder having end walls forming a chamber, a piston operating within the chamber, conduits connected to the cylinder to admit a pressure medium selectably to opposite sides of said piston, a bore in one end wall of the cylinder, a plunger fitting in the bore and being resiliently urged in a, direction to project within the cylinder, whereby the piston in one direction of movement engages the plunger to force the same within the bore, said plunger operating upon the pressure medium when being forced inwardly to cause a decrease'in the speed of the piston in that direction, said cylinder having a restricted passageway, providing communication between the ends of said plunger.
14. In a, device of the class described, in combination with a slide, of fluid pressure means for operating said slide, comprising a cylinder,-
a piston operating within said cylinder, conduits having access to said cylinder to supply fluid under pressure selectably to the two sides of said piston, and a plunger located in said cylinder at one side of said piston adapted to be moved,
providing less restricted communication between the ends of said plunger when fluid under pressure is admitted to that side .of said piston adjacent to said plunger.
15. In a device of the class described, in combination, a movable member, fluid pressure means for operating said member, said fluid pressure means including a cylinder, a piston operating therein, conduits having access to said cylinder to supply a fluid under pressure selectably to the two sides of said piston, a plunger journaled in a wall of said cylinder at one side of said piston adapted to be moved by said piston when said piston is adjacent to one end of its stroke, said cylinder having a restricted passageway providing communication between the two ends of said plunger, and adjustable means for varying the extent of restriction of said passageway.
16. In a device of the class described, in combination, a cylinder, a piston operating within said cylinder, conduits connected to said cylinder to communicate fluid under pressure selectably to opposite sides of said piston, a plunger journaled within a wall of said cylinder, a check valve for permitting ingress of fluid to one side of said plunger during one direction of movement of said piston, and other means to regulate the escape of said fiuid during movement in the opposite direction thereof.
1'7. In a device of the class described, in combination, a cylinder, a piston operating within said cylinder, conduits connected to said cylinder to supply fiuid under pressure selectably to opposite sides of said piston, said piston and a wall of said cylinder having cooperating plunger parts for causing a decrease in the speed of said piston during a portion of the travel of said piston in one direction, said wall of said cylinder being provided with a restricted passageway for permitting communication to the two sides of said plunger parts.
18. In a device of the class described, in combination, a cylinder, a piston operating within said cylinder, conduits connected to said cylinder to supply fluid under pressure selectably to opposite sides of said piston, said piston and a wall of said cylinder having cooperating plunger parts for causing a decrease in the speed of said piston during a portion of the travel of said piston in one direction, said wall of said cylinder being provided with a restricted passageway for permitting communication to the two sides of said plunger parts, said plunger parts being provided with a check valve for permitting communication between the two sides of said plunger parts during the other direction of movement of said piston.
19. In a device of the class described, in com-'- bination, a cylinder, a piston operating within said cylinder, conduits connected to said cylinder to supply fluid under pressure selectably to opposite sides of said piston, said piston and a wall of said cylinder having cooperating plunger parts for causing a decrease in the speed of said piston during a portion of the travel of said piston in one direction, said wall of said cylinder being provided with a restricted passageway for permitting communication to the two sides of said plunger parts, and adjustable means for controlling the extent of restriction of said restricted passageway.
20. In a device of the class described, in combination, a cylinder, a piston operating within said cylinder, conduits connected to said cylinder to supply fluid under pressure selectably to opposite sides of said piston, said piston and a wall of said cylinder having cooperating plunger ,parts for causing a decrease in the speed of said piston during a portion of the travel of said piston in one WILLIAM H.
