Description
- (a) Field of the Invention
- The present invention relates to a hand tool and more particularly to a multipurpose prying tool, which is practical for holding and turning wooden plates, pulling out nails, and driving in nails.
- (b) Description of the Prior Art
- Various lumber turning tools are known. U.S. Pat. No. 4,762,303 discloses a lever type tool, which comprises an elongated handle, and a head having two opposed and spaced apart claws projecting in generally the same direction at opposite sides of a space to closely receive a portion of a rectangular cross section of a lumber member. One of the claws at one side of the space is substantially shorter in length than the other of the claws at the opposite side of the space. U.S. Pat. No. 4,826,136 is substantially similar to U.S. Pat. No. 4,762,303 with the exception that the claws have first inner surfaces; one claw has an outward convex outer surface to engage a work surface, and a second inner surface offset relative to the first inner surface thereof and toward the convex outer surface.
- The aforesaid two conventional designs can only be used to turn lumbers and to pull out nails. Further, these two designs are not orthopedically engineered. Because the head and the handle are aligned in line, the user must employ much effort when operating the tool to turn a lumber.
- The present invention has been accomplished under the circumstances in view. According to one aspect of the present invention, the multipurpose prying tool comprises a handle, a prying head at one end of the handle, and a prying tip at the other end of the handle. In one embodiment of the present invention, the prying tip is made in the form of a claw and curved from one end of the handle for pulling out nails. Further, the prying head has a mouth extending from one end of the handle at right angle or substantially right angle for holding and turning wooden plates.
- According to another aspect of the present invention, two protruding blocks are bilaterally provided in the mouth so that the mouth can be used to hold and turn wooden plates of different thicknesses.
- According to still another aspect of the present invention, the prying tip curves outwards to fit a right-handed user, or inwards to fit a left-handed user.
- According to still another aspect of the present invention, the prying head has a face at one side for driving in nails.
- According to still another aspect of the present invention, the prying tip has a nail-prying hole for pulling out nails, and a beveled work edge on the distal end. Alternatively, the prying tip has a nail-prying hole and a V-notch for pulling out nails.

FIG. 4 is a front view of an alternate form of the multipurpose prying tool according to the present invention. -
FIG. 5 is a cross sectional view of the handle of the multipurpose prying tool shown inFIG. 4 . -
FIG. 6 is an oblique elevation showing an alternate form of the prying tip according to the present invention. -
FIG. 7 is an oblique elevation showing another alternate form of the prying tip according to the present invention. -
FIG. 8 is an oblique elevation of still another alternate form of the multipurpose prying tool according to the present invention. -
FIG. 9 shows an alternate form of the prying head according to the present invention. -
FIG. 10 shows an application example of the multipurpose prying tool shown inFIG. 9 . -
FIG. 11 shows another application example of the multipurpose prying tool shown inFIG. 9 . - Referring to
FIGS. 1˜3 , a multipurpose prying tool in accordance with the present invention is shown comprising ahandle 1, aprying head 2 at one end of thehandle 1, and aprying tip 3 at the other end of thehandle 1. - The
handle 1 is a long bar having an I-shaped cross section. Further, ananti-slip grip 11 may be bonded to the periphery of the handle 1 (seeFIGS. 4 and 5 ). - The
prying head 2 comprises along jaw 211, ashort jaw 212, and amouth 21 defined between thelong jaw 211 and theshort jaw 212. Themouth 21 extends from one end of thehandle 1 at right angle or substantially right angle. Thelong jaw 211 and theshort jaw 212 each haveparallel teeth mouth 21. Thelong jaw 211 has one end, namely the fixed end, joined with the fixed end of theshort jaw 212 to thehandle 1, and the other end, namely the free end, provided with a V-notch 23 for pulling out nails. Further, thelong jaw 211 has aface 24 at one side of the fixed end for driving in nails, etc. - The
prying tip 3 according to the embodiment shown inFIG. 1 is a claw curved from one end of thehandle 1 opposite to theprying head 2, having a slopingface 31, which extends outwards toward a reversed direction relative to the user (right-handed user), and a V-notch 32 on the free end of the slopingface 31 for pulling out nails. -
FIG. 6 shows an alternate form of theprying tip 3. According to this embodiment, theprying tip 3 is a flat tip having a nail-pullinghole 34 cut through the top and bottom sides thereof on the middle for pulling out nails and the free end thereof terminating in a beveled working edge 33. -
FIG. 7 shows another alternate form of theprying tip 3. According to this embodiment, theprying tip 3 is a flat tip having a nail-pullinghole 34 cut through the top and bottom sides thereof on the middle for pulling out nails and the free end thereof terminating in a V-notch 32 for pulling out nails. - Further, the
prying tip 3 can be curved from thehandle 1 toward an outer side to fit a right-handed user (seeFIG. 1 ), or toward an inner side to fit a left-handed user (seeFIG. 8 ). -
