Description
- This application claims benefit of Italian patent application number TO2006A000583, filed Aug. 7, 2006, which is herein incorporated by reference.
- 1. Field of the Invention
- The present invention relates to a device for gripping caps for a capping machine.
- 2. Description of the Related Art
- Capping machines for application of caps on bottles or containers are in general normally provided with a head having a member for gripping the caps. The gripping member must be able to pick up and withhold the caps with a force necessary for enabling application of the caps to the container.
- In the case where the caps are applied to the container by means of screwing, the gripping member must be able to transmit the screwing torque to the cap.
- During the step of application of the caps on the containers, the gripping device must ensure a rather firm gripping of the caps for enabling transmission of the screwing torque. At the same time, the gripping device must enable easy insertion of the caps in the seat of the gripping device and easy release of the same caps at the end of application of the caps on the containers. To ensure said contrasting requirements, it is usually necessary to envisage a controllable actuator, which operates a gripper for gripping and release of the caps.
- The purpose of the present invention is to provide a device for gripping caps that will enable the aforesaid requirements to be met and has a simple structure and a reduced number of components.
- According to the present invention, said purpose is achieved by a device for gripping caps having the characteristics forming the subject of claim 1.
- The present invention will now be described in detail with reference to the attached plate of drawings, which is provided purely by way of non-limiting example and in which:
-
FIG. 1 is an axial cross section of a device for gripping caps according to the present invention; and -
FIGS. 2 and 3 are axial sections illustrating the device ofFIG. 1 in different working positions. - With reference to
FIG. 1 , thenumber 10 designates a device for gripping caps according to the present invention. Designated by 12 inFIG. 1 is a cap, which is to be applied to a container (not illustrated). Thecap 12 is provided with a thread and is applied on the container by means of a movement of roto-translation consisting of a translation in the direction of anaxis 14 and a rotation about the same axis. - The
gripping device 10 comprises asupport 16 constituted by a metal body having ahollow guide portion 18, a portion ofattachment 20, and a bell-shaped portion 22. Theattachment portion 20 and the bell-shaped portion 22 are arranged at the opposite ends of theguide portion 18. Theguide portion 18 has acavity 24, preferably of a cylindrical shape, open in a position corresponding to the bell-shaped portion 22. The bell-shaped portion 22 is open at its end with larger diameter, opposite to theguide portion 18. - The
gripping device 10 comprises an element for retention of thecaps 26 that is intended to carry out gripping and withholding of thecaps 12. Theretention element 26 comprises a plurality of grippingarms 50, each of which is constituted by a substantially Z-shaped metal element with two genericallyparallel portions axis 14 and joined by a generallyradial portion 56. Thevarious arms 50 are set alongside one another in a circumferential direction so as to form a member having cylindrical symmetry with a bell-shaped portion 58 and ahub portion 28. - The
hub portion 28 of theretention element 26 is formed by theportions 52 set alongside one another of thevarious arms 50. Theportion 52 of each of thearms 50 is provided with a groove elongated in anaxial direction 32, which is engaged by a pin-shaped portion 34 of ascrew 36 fixed in aradial hole 38 of theguide portion 18. Theportions 52 of thearms 50 have respective internal surfaces set alongside one another, which form acylindrical hole 48, in which astem 46 is inserted having adish 44 at one end. Thedish 44 rests on the top front ends of theportions 52 of thearms 50. Theportions 52 of thearms 50 are preferably provided withprojections 30 with semicircular cross section, which slidably engage the internal surface of thecavity 24. - An
elastic element 40, preferably constituted by a helical compression spring, is housed in thecavity 24 of theguide portion 18. Theelastic element 40 is set in compression between ashoulder 42 of thesupport 16 and thedish 44. Theelastic element 40 tends to push theretention element 26 towards the outside of thesupport 16. The contact between theportions 34 of thescrews 36 with the respective ends of theelongated grooves 32 of thearms 50 defines an end-of-travel position towards the outside of theretention element 26. - The
portions 54 of thearms 50 set alongside one another form aseat 60 for gripping and retention of thecaps 12. - Applied on the external part of the
portions 54 of theretention element 26 are one or more ring-shapedelastic elements 62, which tend to compress the bell-shapedportion 58 of theretention element 26 in a radial direction inwards. Thearms 50 constituting theretention element 26 can move in a radial direction outwards against the action of theelastic elements 62. This movement of thearms 50 produces an expansion in a radial direction of the retention seat of thecaps 60. Theelastic elements 62 tend to bring thearms 26 back towards a position of minimum diameter of the retention seat of thecaps 60. - Each of the
arms 50 of theretention element 26 is preferably provided with apad 64 made of plastic material, fixed to the end of theportion 54. Thepads 64 of thevarious arms 50 define, with their internal surfaces, aseat 60 for retention of the caps. Thearms 50 forming theretention element 26 are preferably provided withfurther pads 66 fixed to theradial portions 56 and forming anend surface 68 of the bell-shapedportion 58. - The
device 10 according to the present invention can also be provided with anexpelling member 70, designed to facilitate expulsion of thecaps 12 from theseat 60 after application of thecaps 12 on the containers. Theexpulsion member 70 comprises apressure element 72 housed within the bell-shaped portion 58 of theretention element 26. Thepressure element 72 is movable with respect to theretention element 26 and with respect to thesupport 16 in the direction of theaxis 14. Thepressure element 72 is fixed to acontrol member 74 by means of a plurality ofstems 76, just one of which is visible in the figures. Thecontrol member 74 has an annular shape, which extends on the outside of theguide portion 18 of thesupport 16. Thestems 76 extend with play throughrespective holes 78 of the bell-shaped portion 22 of thesupport 16. - The operation of the
gripping device 10 according to the present invention is described in what follows. - With reference to
FIG. 1 , thegripping device 10 is in the configuration for picking up acap 12. Theretention element 26 is pushed towards the outside of thesupport 16 by theelastic element 40. Thepressure element 72 is in a lowered position under the effect of its own weight. The ring-shapedelastic elements 62 keep thearms 50 constituting thegripping element 26 in their closed position, which corresponds to the minimum diameter of theretention seat 60. - In this configuration, the
device 10, carried at the end of a mobile head of a capping machine (not illustrated) is set alongside acap 12 in the direction of theaxis 14. This movement of approach produces insertion of thecap 12 within the bell-shaped portion 58 of theretention element 26. Theretention seat 60 expands as a result of the contact of thepads 64 with the external surface of thecap 12. It should be noted that the diameter of theretention seat 60 in the position of rest is smaller than the external diameter of thecap 12. Consequently, during insertion of thecap 12 within the bell-shaped portion 58, theportions 54 of thearms 50 move outwards, causing an expansion in a radial direction of theretention seat 60. -
FIG. 2 shows the position of thegripping device 10 after complete insertion of thecap 12 in the bell-shapedportion 58 of theretention element 26. The top of thecap 12 pushes thepressure element 72 and thecorresponding control member 74 upwards. The top end of thecap 12 rests against theend surface 68 of the bell-shapedportion 58. - At this point, as the
support 16 continues its movement downwards, theretention element 26 moves towards the inside of thesupport 16. The bell-shapedportion 22 of thesupport 16 comes into contact with thearms 50, keeping said arms in the position of retention of thecap 12. As may be seen inFIG. 3 , the relative movement between theretention element 26 and thesupport 16 terminates when theradial portions 56 of thearms 50 come into contact with a front surface of theguide portion 18. In this condition, a surface having the shape of atruncated cone 80 of the bell-shapedportion 22 of thesupport 16 is in contact with correspondinginclined surfaces 82, formed on the external part of thearms 50. The contact between the bell-shapedportion 22 of thesupport 16 and thearms 50 of theretention element 22 blocks thearms 50 in the configuration of retention of thecap 12. In this condition, theretention element 26 withholds thecap 12 with a force sufficient for transmission of the screwing torque. - At the end of screwing of the
cap 12 on the container, the grippingdevice 10 is moved away in the direction of theaxis 14 with respect to the container on which thecap 12 has been applied. Theelastic element 40 pushes theretention element 26 towards the outside of thesupport 16, in this way freeing thearms 50 from engagement with the bell-shapedportion 22 of thesupport 16. At this point, theseat 60 can be disengaged from thecap 12. Possibly, to facilitate disengagement of thedevice 10 from thecap 12 it is possible to apply a pressure on thecontrol member 74, as indicated by the arrows 84 inFIG. 3 . In this way, a pressure is exerted on thecap 12 via the pressure element, which facilitates disengagement of thecap 12 from theretention element 26. - Of course, without prejudice to the principle of the invention, the details of construction and the embodiments may vary widely with respect to what is described and illustrated herein, without thereby departing from the scope of the invention, as defined by the ensuing claims.
