Description

2 Claims. (Cl. 292-173) This invention relates tolocks and particularly will be vnoted that the head 9 is provided with an to an improved lock for doors, the object being to under surface I3 against which the bolt I2 reacts provide a construction which will properlylock a when in locked position. The surface I3 merges door closed and at the same time present means into a curved end III, which in turn merges into 5 for permitting the ready opening thereof when` a rounded surface I5 rather sharply which acts V5 ever desired. i asa fulcrum for the end I6 of 4the handle or hand Another object of the present invention is t lever I1. The lever I'I is pivotally mounted bythe provide an improved lock which isespecially usepin I 8 on the lock casing I9 and is firmly connectful on ice boxes or refrigerators of some appreed to the pin by a suitable set screw 20. This le- 10 ciable size, the structure presenting means wherever has a grip 2l at the end opposite the end I6. l0;`
by `the door may be forced open even though VNear the pin I8 the lever I1 is provided with an frozen to a greater or lesser extent.` extending finger 22 which lits into the socket 23 An additional object of the invention is to proformed in the bolt I2, whereby the ringer` 22 may Vide an improved lock for refrigerators and the act against the wallY or abutment' 24 to move the like wherein the lock may be opened either from bolt I2'to an unlocked positionsaid movement 15` the outside orthe inside of the door. being against the action of `the spring 25. Bolt A still further object, more specifically, is to I2,.spring 25 and associated parts are arranged in provide an improved lock for ice boxes, refrigera recess 26 in the base 21, said base having its ators and the like wherein the lever used for withside parts merging into the flanges of casing I9.
o drawing the bolt ofthe lock also acts as a lever in It will be noted from Fig. 1 that part of the lever 2o connection with the keeper for prizing or forcing I1 passes between these flanges and the abutment the door partly open, thus breaking any ice seal 28 and strikes the base 21 near the rear thereof. which may have formed. When the lever is open or in substantially the In the accompanying drawingf dotted position shown in Fig. -1,.a flat spring 29 3., Figure l is a horizontal sectional view through closes the opening in the casingV I9, said spring 25 part of a large refrigerator, with a lock embodybeing slightly narrower than the opening in the ing the invention applied thereto; casing and at one end being provided with an en Figure 2 is a" sectional view through Figure 1 largement 3G which has an aperture whereby it approximately on'the line 2-2g may fit over the extension 3| of base 21. The
.Hl Figure 3 isa transverse sectional View through spring 25 also fits over this extension and over 30 Figure l on the line 3 3. j a suitable extension 32 of the bolt I2. Extension Referring to the accompanying drawing by 32 is divided centrally so that the cable 33 may numeral, I indicatesarefrigerator asawhole, and be connected to the pin 32' and then extend 2 the door, which may be of any desired construe` through the hollow extension 3 I, through the pastion.` A lock 3 is provided for locking the door sageway 34 in base 21 and passageway 35 in door 35 closed and also for providing a handle whereby 2. A ring or other object 36 is secured to the the door may be opened. While the device has cable at the end projecting to the inner surface been shown inthe embodiment applied to a reof the door 2 whereby anyone within the ice box frigerator, it will be understood that it may be or refrigerator may pull on ring 36 and withdraw lil used in connection lwith any kind of doors, parthe bolt I2 so that the doormay be opened. This 40 ticularly heavy doors. The lock as illustrated is will prevent a person from being conned within provided with a keeper l which has a base 5 heldV the refrigerator provided that a lock embodying in place by suitable screws 6 which have their this invention is provided on the door thereof. heads exposed at al1 times. The base 5 is formed While anyone may freely open the lock from in- Lif with an externally threaded bore 'I and in the side, it cannot be freely opened from the outside 45 bottom of this bore there is positioned a screw 8 if a bolt or padlock is passed through the aperwhich is hidden and which cannot be reached vture 31 and the padlock moved to locked position, without removing the keeper head 9, which head as this will prevent the lever I1 from swinging is provided with a shank I0 .screwed into the outwardly. The padlock coacting with the aper- HI threaded bore 1. A set screw II isprcvided for ture 31 and associated parts will prevent anyone 50 locking the threaded shank IIJ against movement. on the exterior of the iceboX from opening the It will be observedthat this set screw is arranged same, but will not prevent anyone from opening adjacent the end of the bolt I2, and consequently the door from the inside as the bolt will slide freecannot be reached by anyone until the bolt I2 has ly notwithstanding the function of the padlock.
been withdrawn and the door swung open.V It When the parts are in the position shown in 55 soi Fig. 1 the bolt I2 is in locked position and the door 2 is held closed. If it should be desired to open the door the grip 2i is grasped by hand and pulled downwardly to the dotted position shown in Fig. 1 and then further downwardly until the door is opened. When moved to the position shown in Fig. 1 the bolt I2 is retracted until it is free of the lever 4. Quite often in refrigerators moisture gathers around the door and freezes and prevents the ready opening of the door. I'f this occurs the lever in moving to the dotted position shown in Fig. 1 will retract the bolt, l2, and then the end I6 of the lever will press against the rounded surface I5 of keeper 4 and by this leverage or fulcrum action will produce a great pull on the door and break the ice seal, notwithstanding the fact that the operator is exerting small force on the lever Il. After the door has started to open by reason of this great leverage, a further pullon the lever will cause the door to swing open in the usual manner. As the bolt I2 is a spring pressed structure the door 2 may be slammed shut and this bolt will slide over the surface I5 being automatically retracted until it passes the head 9, whereupon the spring 25 will cause the bolt to snap into locked position. Spring 25 by forcing the bolt to its locked posi tion will cause the wall or abutment 12d to engage the nger 22 and swing the same so that the lever I'I will be moved to its closed position, namely. the position shown in Fig. 1 when the door has been completely closed. This is done even if the lever is not engaged by the hand.
In reference to the keeper it will'be observed that the keeper head is screwed into place and then locked by the screw ii. Whenever desired the screw I I may be loosened and the keeper head entirely removed, or the keeper head may be unscrewed partly so as to secure the desired oset and then the screw II reapplied.
I claim:
l. A lock for refrigerators comprising a base having a channel therein extending from one end toward the opposite end but falling short of said opposite end, a bolt slidingly mounted on said channel and adapted to project from said base when in functioning position, a spring arranged within said channel and continually acting on said bolt for tending to move the same 'toward a lunctioning position, a pivotally mounted lever provided ivitli a finger positioned to engage part of the boit and retract the bolt when the lever is moved pr' letcrmined distance around the pivetal point, lneans for receiving a padlock for locking the lever against functioning, and means eX- tending .troni a point interior of the refrigerator for causing a withdrawal oi' said boli', said means when actuated causing said boltto he Withdrawn regardless of the functioning of said padlock.
A lock for refrigerators and the like including a locking mechanism for locking the door of the refrigerator, said door having an inclined passageway therethrough, said lockingr mecharis'fn .having a base provided with a slideway, a sl bolt slidingly mounted in said slideway, a spring acting to move the bolt in one direction, a lever for moving the holt in the opposite direction, and a cable connected to said bolt and extending through the passageway in said door for permitting a person interiorly of the refrigerator to retract said bolt without disturbing the position of said lever.
