Description
y 1935. M. MALLORY IGNITION CIRCUIT BREAKER Filed Oct. 4, 1934 Patented July 9, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE IGNITION CIRCUIT BREAKER Marion Mallory, Detroit, Mich.
Application October 4, 1934, Serial No. "246,899
5 Claims. (Cl. 200--30) This invention relates to ignition circuit breakradially in the hub of each circuit breaker arm ers and particularly to means for eliminating l and has a pointed inner end which fits in a sparking at the contact points. In the usual groove i8 formed circunlferentially of the pivot ignition circuit breaker, the breaker arm has pin 8. The pin H has a close but sliding fit in 5 more or less freedom of movement about its the arm 7 and when the sp ng i is assembled pivot, so that the breaker point is free to move in place, it bears against the outer end of the pin longitudinally and laterally a few thousandths SO a t tap end of the letter w y of an inch when in operation. This slight irregfits closely in the groove I8. This has two beneularity in movement prevents perfect registration ficial results. It positive p e m t 1 of the contact points and as a result sparks are of t a m 7 l n t di a y of the p t p 8 d 10 c used hich oxidize th t lli surfaces of th all the diametric clearance is removed between points. Since oxidized metal is a very poor cone pin 8 and the bushing 9 0n the Side Of the ductor of electric current, successive breaks of breaker a a Carries the 1 S t at the the electric circuit deteriorate the points at an breaker am! has 110 p y laterally 0f e P t P accelerated rate and the ignition system soon AS a result of this Construction, therefore, 15 fails t perate t th higher d there is positive and uniform registration of the Th object of th present i ti i t vercontact points at all times, their life is greatly com th ab v m ti d difficulty by means lengthened and the quality of their performance of a self-tensioning device associated with the at high Speed remains perfect for a V y long breaker arm. This device prevents any longitutimedinal or lateral play of the circuit breaker arm In the modification Shown in Figures 3 end with reference to its pivot, thereby insuring more the breaker arm 7 is held st t a p y perfect registration of the contact points at all y a Sp Which is Secured in the Clamp H ti d greatly prolonging th i life and is tensioned to exert pressure against the The invention will be more particularly dend 5 0f h Pl y f h r k r rml n- 25 scribed with reference to the accompanying d n y 0f t p v p 3 s p ve y dr wing, i hi h, spring 2|, which is held beneath a cotter pin 22 Figure l is a plan view of a circuit breaker p d diametrically 0f the pivot p e constructed according to the invention. It is to be understood that the specific details Figure 3 is a plan View of a modified form of of the invention, as herein shown and described, the invention, are only for the purpose of illustration, and that Figure 4 is a, section taken on the line 4 4 f the invention embraces all such other modifica- 5 Figure 3. tions as may fall within the scope of the ap- The invention is herein illustrated in connecp d C a mstion with a timer having two circuit breaker I ai arms l mounted on pivot pins 8 within a casing 1. In an ignition circuit breaker, a pivot pin, a
9. A spring I G is secured in a clamp l l and each circuit breaker arm pivotally mounted thereon, a
g0 end of this spring passes about a circuit breaker rotatable cam for rocking said arm to break the arm I and is connected to the contact point !2 circuit, a spring for rocking said arm to close the which is secured in the end l3 of the arm and cocircuit, and means actuated by said spring to operates with the fixed contact point M. The take up both longitudinal and lateral play of spring I0 is tensioned so as to hold the contact said arm with reference to said pivot pin.
4. In an ignition circuit breaker, a pivot pin, a circuit breaker arm pivotally mounted thereon, a rotatable cam for rocking said arm to break the circuit, a spring for rocking said arm to close the circuit, and a radially disposed tension pin hearing at one end against the pivot pin and at the other end against said spring to take up lateral play of the circuit breaker arm.
5. In an ignition circuit breaker, a pivot pin, a circuit breaker arm pivotally mounted thereon, a contact point on said arm, a fixed contact point cooperating therewith, a spring anchored to a fixed base with one end secured to the contact point on the arm and urging it toward the fixed contact point, and a tension pin bearing at one end against the pivot pin and at the other end against an intermediate point of the spring to take up lateral play of the circuit breaker arm.
