Claims. 1 (01. 189-315) This invention relates to guy wire mountings, and more particularly to guy guards.
In my copending applications Serial Nos. 504,- 920, filed December 26, 1930, and 519,187, filed February 28th, 1931, there are disclosed and claimed novel guy guard constructions "which are improvements over the prior art in that they eliminate the disadvantages of earlier constructions. For example, it was the common practice for a number of years to secure guy guards over or around guy wires by the useof U-bolts and similar fastening devices, and such guards were disadvantageous particularly because of the labor involved in placing them in position and because of the relatively expensive fastening means employed.
In my copending applications referred to the guard constructions are of such character as to eliminate the use of separate fastening means by utilizing one of the usual clamp bolts for securing the lower end of the guard,"and by providing means carried by theJguard for engaging the guy wire to secure the guard thereto. Such a construction possessed the material advantages over the prior art that it was cheaper to manufacture and much easier to install, thus substantially reducing the total cost of manufacturing and installing the device. a
In my copending application Serial No. 580,976, filed December 14, 1931, I have disclosed aim"- ther improvement in the art of guy wire mountings. It has been the common practice to secure the lower ends of guy Wires to anchoring means therefor by providing ground anchors having shanks terminating at their upper ends in eyes, and the lower ends of the guy wires are looped around thimbles connected to the eyes. Such a construction is disadvantageous for the reasons disclosed in my copending application Serial No. 580,976. Such disadvantages reside in the necessity of having to cut off the guy cable to approximate lengths with the attendant difiiculty.
of completing the operations of threading theguy wire through the thimble, drawing it taut and securing it to the clamping bolt. After such operations are completed the end of the length of guy cable is cut off adjacent the clamp and left lying in the vicinity of the guy guard. My copending application last referred to overcomes these several difiiculties by eliminating the necessity of cutting the guy cable until after complete installation has been made, thus eliminating the leaving of a short piece of cable on the adja cent ground. The construction referred to also greatly facilitates the guy cable installation whereby it will be apparent that labor costs due to installation are materially reduced.
An important object of the present invention is to provide a greatly improved guy wire installation, and particularly with reference to the 5 guy guard, wherein more eflicient anchoring means for the guard is provided without the necessity of installing it by first hooking the upper engaging means around the wire with the guard extending at an angle to the wire, and then ilwinging the guard downwardly to operative posi- More specifically, an important object of the present invention is to provide a guard construction of such character as to permit the guard to be placed in position by moving it into engagement therewith from a position parallel thereto, and wherein thesecuring of the guard in position is accomplished so quickly and easily that the labor costs of installation are greatly'reduced.

Referring to Figures 1 to 5 inclusive, the numeral l0 designates an ordinary guy strand such as those used in connection with telephone and telegraph poles and the like. The guy cable is shown as having its lower end passing around a thimble H, and the opposite strands of the cable are secured together by bolts [3 beneath the nuts 'of which are arranged washers 14. The thimble H passes through the eye I5 carried by the upper end of an anchor rod I6.
The guy guard is indicated as a whole by the numeral l1 and is preferably formed of sheet metal. The body of the guard is arcuate in cross section and may be any desired portion of a complete circle, and preferably is at least semicircular. In Figures 3 and 4, the guard is shown in cross-section as extending throughout approximately 2'70", in which case the opening l8 defined between the edges of the body of the guard is sufficiently wide to permit the entrance of the clamp I2 therebetween. If desired, the body of the guard may be substantially a complete circle, in which case the portion of the edges of the guard lying adjacent the clamp l2 will be cut away to permit the entrance of the clamp thereinto.
The upper end of the guard is preferably provided with any suitable means for engaging the wire without clamping or engaging against opposite sides thereof. In Figures 2 and 5, the body of the guard is shown as being provided with a sheet metal cap l9 having a radial slot formed therein with a semi-circular inner end 2| lying substantially axially with respect to the guard and through which the guy wire is adapted to extend. The portion of the cap [9 defining the slot 28 is preferably turned downwardly as at 22 to form a flange of substantial width to engage against the Wire, as shown in Figure 2, to prevent the raw edge of the metal from scraping the wire and abrading the galvanizing thereon. Outwardly of the slot 20, the cap is preferably provided with outwardly diverging edges 23 to facilitate the movement of the cap to operative position with respect to the guy wire.
In my copending application Serial No. 519,187, previously referred to, I have disclosed means for securing the lower portion of the guard to one of the bolts of the clamp. With the present invention, it has been found unnecessary to remove any of the nuts from the clamp, since the device may be anchored in position without actually being positively secured by one of the clamp bolts.
Referring to Figures 1, 2 and 3, it will benoted that the guard is provided with a plurality of depressions 23 preferably diametrically opposite the split in the guard. Each of these depressions is provided with an opening 24 substantially centrally thereof and defined by an inwardly stamped flange 25. The opening 2 1 in each depression may be of any desired shape, depending upon the element which it is to receive, and is shown in the present instance as being circular to receive one of the washers [4.
A plurality of the depressions 23 is provided merely for the purpose of adjustment whereby the lower end of the guard may be arranged at any desired height from the ground depending upon which of the openings 24 is utilized for anchoring the lower end of the guard, and upon which of the washers M the opening surrounds. In Figure 2, the lowermost opening 24 and its flange 25 is shown as surrounding the uppermost washer l4, and it will be apparent that when the device is in position, the inner edge of the flange 25 contacts against the outer face of the adjacent element of the clamp [2. When the guard is secured in position by means to be referred to, the seating of the inner edge of the flange 25 against the clamp assists in preventing rotation of the guard with respect to the guy strand.
For the purpose of securing the guard to the strand a plurality of engaging members 26 is provided. For most installations only one of the engaging members 26 is necessary, but it is preferred to employ two of these members in order that any excess slack of the guy strand may be taken up, in a manner to be described. When two of the engaging members are employed, they are preferably placed apart a considerable distance, as shown in Figure 1. The engaging members 26 are identical in construction and only one need be described in detail. It will become apparent, however, that the engaging elements are reversed with respect to each other and are arranged on opposite sides of the center of the guard as defined by a plane passing through the axis of the body intermediate the edges of the opening l8.
Referring to Figure 3 it will be noted that one side of each of the engaging members 26 is curved to conform to the curvature of the inner surface of the guard and lies thereagainst. Such curved edge of the engaging member is provided with an outstanding lug 27 extending through a suitable opening in the body of the guard, and after the engaging member has been placed in position, a suitable welding device is placed against the outer face of the lug 21 to weld it securely to the body of the guard. Substantially opposite the curved face referred to, each engaging element is provided with a slightly inclined face 28 beyond the outer end of which is arranged a notch 29 in which the guy strand ID is arranged when the device is locked in position. Adjacent each member 26, and substantially diametrically opposite the opening l8, the body of the guard is provided with an opening 30 for the reception of a suitable tool 3| for moving the guy strand into either notch 29. In the present instance, the tool 3| is shown as an ordinary bolt such as usually is carried by a lineman, but it will be apparent that a screw driver, the handle of a pair of pliers, or any other suitable implement may be employed.
In some instances, it is desired to have the guy guard extend downwardly to the surface of the ground, in which case it is unnecessary to support the guard against downward movement. The form of the invention shown in Figure 6 is adapted for such use. As shown, the body of the guard may be of uniform cross sectional shape throughout its length without the provision of the depressions 23. The engagingrmembers .26 are employed as in the previous case, and eachend of the guard is provided with a cap 32 which may be identical with the cap l9 previously described, and need not be referred to indetail, vIt will be apparent that these caps will prevent movement of the guard laterally with respecttoithenguy strand in every direction except radially in alinement with the slots provided, in the.,caps,,,32. The engaging members 25, however, prevent such movement of the guy guard unless it is deliberately released in a mannerto be described. 7
In the form of the invention shown in Figures 7 and 8, means are provided forsecuring the lower end of the guard to the anchor rodrather than to the guy clamp. In such modified form, the invention may employ a guy guard which is identical with the form of the guard illustrated in Figures 1 to 5 inclusive except for the particular formation of the depressions in the guard, and accordingly the guard need not, be referred to in detail. For convenience, the parts of the guard which are identical with theform shown in Figures 1 to 5 inclusive are illustrated by the same reference numerals. In place of the depressions 23, the guard may be provided with one or more similar depressions 33. Instead of being provided with relatively large openings 2d surrounded by the flanges 25, however, the base of the depression 33 is provided with an opening 34 for apurpose to be described. r 1
The form of the invention shownin Figures '7 to 10 inclusive, employs an anchor' rod,35the shank and base of which may be conventional and accordingly need not be referred toin detail. The upper end of the anchor rod is provided with a head indicated as a whole by thenumeral 36. This head is provided on opposite sides with flanges 3'! connected at the bottom of the, head, and these flanges slope or are curved downwardly and outwardly as shown in Figure? to form a saddle having a groove 38 at the lower portion around which the guy strand Hi passes,
The upper end of the head '36 terminates in a plane at right angles to the axis of the guard as indicated by the numeral 39. Adjacentit s upper end, the head 36 is provided withoppo-site inturned flanges 49 within which opposite strands of the guy wire are adapted to be arranged. The usual guy clamp i2 is provided, and when in operative position, the clamp has its lower end seated against the upper end of the head 35. The free end of the guy strand is cut oil after installation is completed, adjacent the upper en of the clamp I2 as indicated'at 42.

In this-connection, it will be apparent that the washer M. forms a convenient element for reception within one of theopenings 24, but the use of the guard is not limited to the use of the washersthemselves as means for fixing the guard of theclamp maybe provided with a lug such as the lug-41 illustrated in Figure 11.
After the guard has been placed in operative position with the guy strand arranged in the slotZfl andone of the washers 14 arranged in one of the openings 24, they guy strand will have a portion withinthe body "I? lying in the small depression at 'the'inner end of the face 28 of each engaging member 26." The operator then inserts any suitable implement through one of the openings 30, as indicated in solid lines in Figure 3. For'this purpose, any convenient implement may be employed, such as a fairly long bolt, a screw driver, a handle of. a pair of pliers, etc. The implement. is moved in the direction of the arrow in Figure 3 to the dotted line position and beyond such position, and during such movement, the implement contacts with one side of the opening 38 as a fulcrum and forces the adjacent portion of the guy strandalong the inclined face 28, and thence into the notch 29. The tension of the guy strand under ordinary conditions will effectively maintain the strand. in the notch 29 against manual displacement. In other words, if the guy strand is under normal tension, such tension is sufiicient .to prevent accidental or malicious removal of the guard by direct pressure exerted Occasionally, after a guy strand has been in use for a considerable period of time, it becomes less taut, for various reasons, and the present device operates to restore the guy strand to its normal degree of tautness and at the same time causes the guy strand to securely anchor the device in position. Where the guy strand is normally taut it is necessary to employ only one of. the engaging members 26, but when the wire has become slack, both members 26 are preferably employed. As will be apparent from Figures 1 and 3, the notches 29 of the two members 26 are arranged on opposite sides of a plane passing through the axis of the body I! and through the opening l8 centrally thereof. Accordingly the guy strand will be forced in one direction to engage one notch 29 and in the opposite direction to engage the notch of the other member 26, thus providing oppositely facing wire engaging means, and causing the guy strand to follow a sufficiently zigzag path to take up the slackness and restore the guy strand to a normal taut condition. The guy strand may be released from either nut 29 by inserting a suitable implement through the opening I8 in engagement with one side thereof, and then prying the guy strand out of the notch. Such action requires a substantial degree of leverage for its performance and cannot be accomplished by the direct application of manual force.
The form of the invention shown in Figure 6 is identical with the form previously described so far as the engaging members 26 are concerned. The modified form is applicable in installations where it is desired to have the guy guard extend into contact with the ground. Under such conditions, the two end caps 32 serve to center the guy strand with respect to the body l1, while the members 26 serve to secure the guard to the guy strand. The guard merely is permitted to slip downwardly into contact with the ground prior to the action of engaging the guy strand within the notches of the members 26.
The form of the invention shown in Figure 6 7 to 10 inclusive also is installed in the same manner as in the previous cases so far as the members 26 are concerned, the screw 45 being applied prior to the operation of engaging the guy strand within the notches of the members 26. In this case, the screw 45 serves as positive means for securing the guard in position, but does not require the removal of one of the nuts of the clamp bolts. In this form of the invention, the clamp 4| seats against the upper end of the head 36, and if the guy strand becomes somewhat slack, it prevents downward movement of the clamp and the lower portion of the guy strand, and thus prevents the latter from becoming disengaged from the groove 38. This action is disclosed in my copending application Serial No. 580,976 referred to above, but is of less importance in the present case since the engagement of the guard against the lug 43 operates to prevent disengagement of the loop of. the guy strand from the groove 38.
The operation of the modified form shown in Figure 11 is identical with that previously described except that there is no positive securing of the guard in position, the flange being placed in position around the small lug 41 prior to the operation of engaging the guy strand within the notches of one or more of the members 26. In connection with this form of the invention, attention is invited to the fact that there is no eye or similar device such as the thimble ll through which the guy wire is to be threaded and which would necessitate the cutting off of the wire as is the present practice. The operator merely places the guy strand within one of the hooks 46, and then bends the wire around the groove 38 and engages the end of the wire within the other hook 40. Such operation places op posite strands of the wire substantially in the proper position to be clamped between the elements of the clamp 4 I, after which the guy strand is cut off as at 42 from the reel of wire, thus eliminating the discarding of a short section of wire, as is usually the case.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the present device permits the placing of the guard in approximately normal position directly from one side of the guy strand and from a position parallel thereto. This action eliminates the necessity of swinging the lower end of the guard through an arm of approximately 90 per cent. as in the case of the structure shown in my copending application Serial No. 519,187. In some installations this swinging of the guard is permitted to take place only with difiiculty. Moreover, after the guard has been placed approximately in operative position in accordance with the present invention, the guard may be freely moved longitudinally or revolved as may be necessary to properly aline one of the flanges 25 on the opening 34 with the element which it is to receive. Thus any abrading of the wire and consequent injury to the galvanizing thereon while moving the guard to operative position is eliminated. The forms of the invention shown in Figures 1 to 6 inclusive and 11 are adapted to be placed in position without the use of fastening elements as such.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the operation of the engaging members 26 is not specifically dependent upon the particular means for centering the guard with respect to the guy wire and for preventing longitudinal movement of the guard. In other words, the engaging means 26 is operative if the guard is fixed against longitudinal movement with respect to the clamp, as shown in Figure 2, or with respect to the anchor rod, as shown in Figure '7. Moreover, the engaging means 26 is operative in the manner shown in Figure 6 with a portion of the upper end of the guard contacting with the guy wire and a portion of the lower end contacting with the shank l6 of the anchor rod. In a number of the claims therefore, the guard has been defined as being mounted with respect to the guy wire structure which term is intended to include all of the elements of the structure, not including the guard, such as the guy wire, clamp and anchor. Moreover, the-manner of mounting the guard with respect to the clamp is not limited to the use of one of the washers l4, as in the specific embodiment shown in Figure 2, but may be mounted with respect to one of the nuts, to a projection carried on one of the clamp elements, etc. Any definitions in the following claims therefore, which call for the mounting of the guard with respect to the clamp, are intended to cover any portions of the clamp including the nuts or bolts thereof.
It is to be understood that the forms of the invention herewith shown and described are to be taken as preferred examples of the same and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described comprising an elongated guard of sheet material adapted to at least partially surround a guy wire structure, means carried by said guard adjacent opposite ends thereof and adapted to contact with the guy wire structure, and an engaging device carried by said guard intermediate its ends and provided with a notch lying to one side of the normal line of the guy wire and facing away from such norm-a1 line, said engaging device being further provided with an inclined face extending from the normal line of the guy wire to said notch and along which the guy wire is adapted to be moved from its normal position into position in engagement with said notch.
2. A device of the character described compris-- ing an elongated guard of sheet material adapted to at least partially surround a guy wire structure, means carried by the guard adjacent its upper end and including a radially opening notch adapted to receive the guy wire, the lower end of the guard having a portion engageable against a portion of the guy wire structure, means for securing said portion of the guard to the guy wire structure, and an engaging device carried by said guard intermediate its ends and provided with a portion lying to one side of the radial plane of said notch and adapted to be engaged by the guy wire upon the lateral offsetting thereof into engaging position with respect thereto.
3,. A device of the character described comprising an elongated guard of sheet material adapted to at least partially surround a guy wire structure, means carried by the guard adjacent its. upper end and including a radially opening slot adapted to receive the guy wire, means adjacent the lower end of the guard for engaging against a portion of the guy wire structure, means for securing said last named means to the guy wire structure, and an engaging device carried by said guard intermediate its ends and provided with a notch lying to one side of the radial plane of said slot and facing away from the normal line of the guy wire, said notch being adapted to receive the guy wire upon the lateral offsetting thereof into engaging position with respect to said notch.
l. A device constructed in accordance with claim 3 wherein said engaging device is provided with an inclined face extending from the normal line of the guy wire to said notch to guide the guy wire for movement thereinto.
5. A device of the character described comprising a guard adapted to at least partially surround a guy wire structure, a cap carried by the guard adjacent its upper end and including a radially opening slot adapted to receive the guy wire, the lower end of the guard being provided with means facing in the same direction as said slot and adapted to engage against a portion of the guy wire clamp and to receive a portion thereof to prevent longitudinal movement of the guard, and an engaging device carried by said guard intermediate its ends and provided with a portion lying to one side of the radial plane of said slot and adapted tobe engaged by the guy wire upon the lateral offsetting thereof into engaging position with respect thereto.
6. A device of the character described comprising a guard adapted to at least partially surround a guy wire structure, a cap carried by the guard adjacent its upper end and including a radially opening slot adapted to receive the guy wire, the lower end of the guard being provided with means facing in the same direction as said slot and adapted to engage against a portion of the guy wire clamp and to receive a portion thereof to prevent longitudinal movement of the guard, and an engaging device carried by said guard intermediate its ends and provided with a notch lying to one side of the radial plane of said slot and facing away from the normal line of the guy wire, said device being further provided'with an'inclined face extending from the normal line of the guy wire to said notch to guide the guy wire for movement thereinto. r
7. A device of the character described comprising a guard having a longitudinal opening extending throughout its length, a-capcarried by the upper end of the guard and providedwith a radial slot'extending to and communicating with said longitudinal openings, said guard being provided adjacent its lower end at a point diametrically opposite said longitudinal opening with an inwardly extending flange adapted to receive a portion of the guy wire clamp and to contact with said clamp to prevent longitudinal movement of the guard, and an engaging member having a notch laterally offset from the radial plane of said slot to be engaged'by the guy wire upon the lateral offsetting thereof into engaging position with respect to said notch.
8. A device of the character described comprising a guard having a longitudinal opening extending throughout its length, a cap carried by the upper end of the guard and provided with a radial slot extending to and communicating with said longitudinal opening, said guard being provided adjacent its lower end at a point diametrically oppositesaid longitudinal opening with an opening defined by an inwardly extending flange and corresponding in shape to and receiving a portion of the guy wire clamp with the inner edge of the flange contacting with the clamp to prevent longitudinal movement of the guard, and an engaging device carried by said guard intermediate its ends and provided with a notch lying to one side of the radial plane of said slot and facing away from the normal line of a guy wire, said notch being adapted to receive the guy Wire upon the lateral offsetting thereof into engaging position with the notch, said engaging device having an inclined face leading to the notch to facilitate movement of the guy wire thereinto.
9. A device of the character described comprising a guard adapted to at least partially surround a guy wire structure, means carried by said guard adjacent opposite endsthereof and adapted to contact with the guy wire structure, and an engaging device carried by said guard intermediate its ends and provided with a notch lying to one side and facing away from the normal line of the guy wire, said notch being adapted to receive the guy wire upon the lateral offsetting thereof into engaging position with respect to said notch, said guard being provided adjacent said engaging device with an opening adapted for the insertion of a tool operable for effecting lateral offsetting of the guy wire.
10. A device of the character described comprising a guard having a longitudinal opening extending throughout itslength, a cap carriedby the upper end of the guard and provided with a radial slot extending to and communicating with said longitudinal opening, said guard being provided adjacent its lower end at a point diametrically opposite said longitudinal opening with means engageable with the guy wire structure to prevent longitudinal movement of the guard with respect thereto, and an engaging member having a notch laterally offset from the radial plane of said slot to be engaged by the guy wire upon the lateral offsetting thereof into engaging position with respect to said notch, said guard being provided with an opening adjacent said engaging member and substantially diametrically opposite said longitudinal opening for the reception of an implement operable for effecting the lateral offsetting of the guy wire into engaging position with said notch.

A device of the character described comprising a guy wire anchor rod having a saddle around which the guy wire is adapted to pass, a guard at least partially surrounding the guy wire and engaging the latter at the upper end of the guard, said saddle having a projection engaging a portion of the guard to prevent longitudinal movement thereof, and engaging means carried by the guard intermediate its ends and provided with a notch laterallly offset from and facing away from the normal line of the guy wire, said engaging means being further provided with an inclined face along which the guy wire is adapted to be moved laterally from its normal position for reception in said notch.
12. A device of the character described comprising a guy wire anchor rod having a saddle around which the guy wire is adapted to pass, a clamp for the guy wire arranged above the anchor rod, a guard at least partially surrounding the guy wire and engaging the latter at the upper end of the guard, said saddle having a flat extended face lying in a plane substantially parallel to the axis of the guard and a lug projecting outwardly from said face, said guard being provided near its lower end with an opening corresponding in shape and size to and receiving said lug with the portions of the guard adjacent said opening contacting with said face, and engaging means carried by the guard intermediate its ends and provided with a notch laterally offset from and facing away from the normal line of the guy wire to be engaged by the guy wire upon the lateral offsetting thereof into engaging position with respect to said notch.
13. An anchor rod for guy wire structures comprising an elongated body having a head formed at its upper end, said head having its lower portion offset from the body to form a saddle provided with a groove around which the guy wire is adapted to pass, said saddle being provided outwardly of the groove with a substantially flat face arranged in a plane parallel to said body, said saddle being further provided with a lug extending outwardly from said face for reception within an opening formed in a guy guard 14. A device of the character described comprising an anchor rod, a guy wire, and an elongated guard of sheet metal adapted to at least partially surround the guy wire, said anchor rod.
having an integral offset head provided with an open groove forming a saddle around which the guy wire is adapted to pass to be secured with respect to said anchor rod, said head having an outer face portion engaging against a correspondingly shaped inner face portion of the guy guard and secured thereto.
15. A device of the character described comprising an anchor rod, a guy wire, an elongated guard of sheet metal adapted to at least partially surround the guy wire, said anchor rod having an integral oifset head provided with an open groove forming a saddle around which the guy wire is adapted to pass to be secured with respect to said anchor rod, said head having an outer face of substantial area engageable against a similarly 2 shaped inner face portion of the guy guard, and means for securing said guy guard to said head.
