Abstract
A device for the placement of the badge on a uniform includes a mounting sheet, a badge section corresponding to a shape of the badge and through mounting sheet, a first attachment apparatus for attaching the mounting sheet to the uniform.
Description
- This invention relates to a uniform badge mounting device and more particularly to a badge mounting device used by individuals who wear a standardized shirt or uniform of the type used by military, paramilitary, police, or other law enforcement services that use a pin back badge.
- U.S. Pat. No. 6,510,629 discloses a badge which includes a backing element of flexible sheet material having a front face and a rear face and is cut to define the outline of the badge and discloses an insignia device of molded plastics material on said front face and affixed to the sheet material.
- U.S. Pat. No. 5,791,076 discloses a badge holder including a first backing member having a means for attaching a badge thereto; a second backing member which is connected to the first backing member; a necklace member which is slidingly engaged with the second backing member.
- U.S. Pat. No. 5,283,996 discloses a badge including a badge plate and multiple interchangeable means for fastening the badge plate to clothing or other objects; the rear portion of the badge plate attaches to the means for fastening by releasable means.
- The present invention allows the user to accurately place pin-back badges on a uniform.
- The present invention will allow the user to quickly and accurately place pin-back badges on a uniform without the need to measure distances on the uniform.
- The present invention will allow the user to secure and stabilize the uniform badge mounting device on a uniform by using a first attachment apparatus on the device and taking advantage of an existing second attachment apparatus on the uniform.
- The present invention will allow the user to center and align the uniform badge mounting device on existing service branch identification tag by using an outline on the uniform badge mounting device.
- Achieving these objectives will make placing pin-back badges on the uniform quick, thus the saving time for the user.
- The user of the present invention is not required to measure the distance for proper placement of the badge on the uniform but does result in the proper placement of the badge on the uniform.
- A stable and secure placement of the uniform badge mounting device is achieved by using a consistent starting point for measuring badge placement on the uniform.
- The uniform badge monitoring device of the present invention can be used repeatedly.

FIG. 1 illustrates a cross-sectional view of a front side of theflexible mounting sheet 10 of the present invention. Theflexible mounting sheet 10 may be formed from plastic, paper, cardboard, metal or any other suitable material. If theflexible mounting sheet 10 is formed from transparent or nearly transparent plastic, the transparent plastic aids in the placement and alignment of theflexible mounting sheet 10 on the uniform.FIG. 1 additionally showsbadge section 14 which is an area in theflexible mounting sheet 10 of apertures or cut away sections through theflexible mounting sheet 10 and which is in the shape of a badge that the user wishes to have placed on a uniform. Almost endless combinations of thesebadge sections 14 are possible with the present invention.FIG. 1 additionally illustrates arectangular outline 26 for placement of the first attachment apparatus. Although arectangular outline 26 is shown inFIG. 1 , other shapes for theoutline 26 are within the scope of the invention. Theoutline 26 may correspond to thesecond attachment apparatus 24 of the standard military uniform. In the above description, flexible has been used to describe a portion of the invention. However, thesheet 10 could vary in thickness and could also be rigid. -
FIG. 3 illustrates a cross-sectional view of the side of theflexible mounting sheet 10 with thefirst attachment apparatus 12 which is used to detachably connect to the uniform and which is attached to theflexible mounting sheet 10 at theoutline 26 by adhesive. -
FIG. 4 illustrates a cross-sectional view of the side of theflexible mounting sheet 10 and thefirst attachment apparatus 12 which is opposed to thesecond attachment apparatus 24 which attaches to thefirst attachment apparatus 12. The term “attachment apparatus” as used herein refers to any device known in the art of fastening, including screws of a number of types, bolts, pins, and clips. One preferred attachment apparatus is Velcro which includes hooks and loops types of fasteners. Behind the uniform 22 which may be a shirt, pants or jacket or other type of appropriate clothing, is aprotective pad 16 which may be formed from foam, paper or cardboard or other suitable device and which stabilizes theflexible mounting sheet 10. AdditionallyFIG. 4 illustrates abadge 18 which may be a pin type or screw type badge to be placed through thebadge section 14 and which includes apin 17 which penetrates the uniform 22 and theprotective pad 16. -
FIG. 5 illustrates thebadge securing device 20 being inserted into thepin 17 to secure thebadge 18 on the uniform. - Accurate placement of the
badge 18 is a result of the alignment between thefirst attachment apparatus 12 with thesecond attachment apparatus 24 and is a result of the alignment between thefirst attachment apparatus 12 and thebadge section 14. Thebadge section 14 should be sufficiently larger than thebadge 18 so that thebadge 18 fits within thebadge section 14, but thebadge section 14 should not be sufficiently larger thanbadge 18 so that thebadge 18 is not properly positioned. -
FIG. 6 illustrates a perspective view of thebadge 18 which is shown as a pin back type and thebadge securing device 20. -
FIG. 7 illustrates the uniform 22 which is shown as a jacket but could be any type of clothing with thesecond attachment apparatus 24.FIG. 7 shows the service branch identification tag 30 removed from thesecond attachment apparatus 24. It can be seen that the present invention can be used on any uniform 22 that has a removable service branch identification tag 30. - The user places the uniform 22 in a position to access the service branch identification tag 30. The service branch identification tag 30 is removed from the
second attachment apparatus 24, and thefirst attachment apparatus 12 is aligned with the secondattachment apparatus number 24 and removably attached to thesecond attachment apparatus 24. Theprotective pad 16 is placed behind the uniform 22 so that it is approximately aligned with theflexible mounting sheet 10. The user inserts thebadge 18 andpin 17 through thebadge section 14 until thepin 17 reaches theprotective pad 16. The user checks the alignment of thebadge 18 and repeats the process if thebadge 18 is not properly aligned. If thebadge 18 is properly aligned, the user removes theprotective pad 16, and the user places thebadge securing device 20 on thepin 17. Thebadge 18 is now secured on the uniform 22. Theflexible mounting sheet 10 is removed from the uniform 22 by detaching thefirst attachment apparatus 12 from thesecond attachment apparatus 24. At this point, the process could be repeated to place anotherbadge 18 on the uniform 22. Alternatively, the user attaches the service branch identification tag 30 to thesecond attachment apparatus 24. -
FIG. 8 illustrates a cross-sectional view of another embodiment of the present invention having threebadge sections 14 substantially vertically aligned. -
FIG. 2 illustrates a cross-sectional view of the present invention, showing another embodiment having onebadge section 14. -
FIG. 9 illustrates a cross-sectional view of another embodiment of the present invention having twobadge sections 14. - The
flexible mounting sheet 10 could be transparent, frosted, varying colors or include grid lines. - The
flexible mounting sheet 10 could be secured manually by the user without thefirst attachment apparatus 12 or alternatively, theflexible mounting sheet 10 could be aligned with thesecond attachment apparatus 24 by theoutline 26. - Alternatively, the
flexible mounting sheet 10 could be constructed without thebadge sections 14, and the user could push thepin 17 through theflexible mounting sheet 10 and the uniform 22. Theflexible mounting sheet 10 could then be removed and thebadge 18 mounted on the uniform 22 by using the holes created by thepin 17. - While the invention is susceptible to various modifications and alternative forms, specific embodiments thereof have been shown by way of example in the drawings and are herein described in detail. It should be understood, however, that the description herein of specific embodiments is not intended to limit the invention to the particular forms disclosed.
Claims (18)
1) A device for the placement of the badge on a uniform, comprising:
a mounting sheet;
a badge section corresponding to a shape of said badge and through said mounting sheet;
a first attachment apparatus for attaching said mounting sheet to said uniform.
2) A device for the placement of the badge on a uniform as in claim 1 , wherein said mounting sheet is a flexible mounting sheet.
3) A device for the placement of the badge on a uniform as in claim 1 , wherein said first attachment apparatus is attached to a second attachment apparatus on said uniform.
4) A device for the placement of the badge on a uniform as in claim 3 , wherein said first attachment apparatus is detachable connected to said second attachment apparatus.
5) A device for the placement of the badge on a uniform as in claim 4 , wherein said second attachment apparatus is for service branch identification tag.
6) A device for the placement of the badge on a uniform as in claim 1 , wherein said device includes a protective pad to receive a pin of said badge.
7) A device for the placement of the badge on a uniform as in claim 1 , wherein said device includes an outline for placement of said first attachment apparatus.
8) A device for the placement of the badge on a uniform as in claim 1 , wherein said first attachment apparatus includes a loop.
9) A device for the placement of the badge on a uniform as in claim 3 , wherein said second attachment apparatus includes a hook.
10) A method for forming a device for the placement of the badge on a uniform, comprising the steps of:
forming a mounting sheet;
forming a badge section corresponding to a shape of said badge and through said mounting sheet;
forming a first attachment apparatus for attaching said mounting sheet to said uniform.
11) A method for forming a device for the placement of the badge on a uniform as in claim 10 , wherein said mounting sheet is a flexible mounting sheet.
12) A method for forming a device for the placement of the badge on a uniform as in claim 10 , wherein said method includes the step of attaching said first attachment apparatus to a second attachment apparatus on said uniform.
13) A method for forming a device for the placement of the badge on a uniform as in claim 12 , wherein the method includes the step of detachable connecting said first attachment apparatus to said second attachment apparatus.
14) A method for forming a device for the placement of the badge on a uniform as in claim 13 , wherein said second attachment apparatus is for service branch identification tag.
15) A method for forming a device for the placement of the badge on a uniform as in claim 10 , wherein said method includes the step of forming a protective pad to receive a pin of said badge.
16) A method for forming a device for the placement of the badge on a uniform as in claim 10 , wherein said method includes the step of forming an outline for placement of said first attachment apparatus.
17) A method for forming a device for the placement of the badge on a uniform as in claim 10 , wherein said first attachment apparatus includes a loop.
18) A method for forming a device for the placement of the badge on a uniform as in claim 12 , wherein said second attachment apparatus includes a hook.
