Abstract
A latch assembly includes a buckle and a tongue for releasably engaging the buckle. The tongue has a cut-out. The buckle includes a base having a slot for receiving the tongue. The buckle also includes a locking pawl pivotally attached to the base and engageable by the tongue, to pivot the locking pawl so that the locking pawl engages in the cutout of the tongue when the tongue is inserted in the slot of the base. The buckle also includes a release lever pivotally attached to the base, the release lever having a cut-out receiving the locking pawl to engage the release lever when the tongue is inserted in the slot of the base, thereby to block removal of the tongue from the buckle.
Description
- This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Application No. 60/749,755, filed Dec. 13, 2005, the entire disclosure of which is incorporated by reference.
- The invention relates to a latch assembly or buckle, used for example with a cargo belt or strap for securing a load. The cargo belt is used to hold a top cap and pallet contents, such as totes, boxes, or dunnage, on a pallet. With a typical pallet, load, and plastic top cap, the retractor for the cargo belt is installed on the pallet and the buckle (latch) is commonly installed or mounted on the top cap.
- Many latches employ a press-sticker style release buckle, or an aircraft-lever style release buckle, in conjunction with a cargo belt or strap to secure loads. These types of latches may become extremely difficult or impossible to disconnect or release under certain circumstances, such as when the buckle and/or tongue has become damaged during handling of the secured pallet, or when the cargo strap is subjected to heavy tension or loads, which may arise because of shifting of the cargo during transportation of the pallet. As a result of the difficulty in disconnecting these latches, the cargo belt may have to be cut to release and access the cargo load, resulting in a need to replace the belt for future use.

FIG. 1 illustrates schematically alatch assembly 10, used for example with a cargo belt orstrap 12 for securing aload 14. Thecargo belt 12 is used to hold atop cap 16 and the load orpallet contents 14, such as totes, boxes, or dunnage, on apallet 18. Thelatch assembly 10 may be used in other applications or environments. - The latch assembly 10 (
FIG. 2 ) includes abuckle 20 and atongue 22. Thetongue 22 is engageable with thebuckle 20 in a secure locking arrangement that can be easily released as described below. - The buckle 20 (
FIGS. 2-4 ) includes a housing orbase 30. Thebase 30 may be stamped and formed from one piece of metal as shown. Thebase 30 includes abottom wall 32, and two upstanding,parallel side walls top flanges 38 extend inward toward each other from theside walls bottom wall 32,side walls top flanges 38 delineate aslot 40 for receiving thetongue 22, at thefront end 42 of thebuckle 20. - Extending between the
side walls rivet 50. Thefirst pivot pin 50 defines afirst pivot axis 52 of thebuckle 20. Extending between theside walls rivet 54. Thesecond pivot pin 54 defines asecond pivot axis 56 of thebuckle 20. - The
base 30 has aprojecting tab 57 of at theback end 58 of the base, with anopening 59 for securing thebuckle 20. The opening 59 is adapted to receive a fastener (now shown) for securing thebuckle 20 to, for example, a top cap or a pallet. Thebuckle 20 may include alternative means for securing the buckle. - The
buckle 20 includes alocking pawl 60. Thelocking pawl 60 has a generally L-shaped configuration including afirst leg 62 and asecond leg 64. Thefirst pivot pin 50 extends through thelocking pawl 60 at a location between the first andsecond legs locking pawl 60 is supported on thefirst pivot pin 50 for pivoting movement about thefirst pivot axis 52 relative to thebase 30. A pair ofbushings 66 on thepivot pin 50 serve to center thelocking pawl 60 laterally in thebuckle 20. - A return spring or locking
pawl spring 68 on thepivot pin 50 acts between thelocking pawl 60 and thebase 30. Thepawl spring 68 biases thelocking pawl 60 for pivoting movement in a clockwise direction as viewed inFIGS. 6-13 . Thus, under the influence of thepawl spring 68, thelocking pawl 60 has a first or disengaged position as shown inFIG. 6 . Thelocking pawl 60 is movable, under the influence of force applied by thetongue 22 as described below, from the disengaged condition to an engaged condition as shown inFIG. 11 , and to various other positions also. - The buckle 20 (
FIGS. 2-4 ) includes arelease lever 70. Therelease lever 70 has acutout 72 between abase portion 74 and ahandle portion 76 of the release lever. Anedge surface 78 on thehandle portion 76 of therelease lever 70 partially defines thecutout 72 in the release lever. Thecutout 72 is a space in therelease lever 70 into which a portion of thelocking pawl 60 can enter. - The
release lever 70 is supported on thesecond pivot pin 54 for pivoting movement about thesecond pivot axis 56 relative to thebase 30. A pair ofsprings 80 on thesecond pivot pin 54 serve to center therelease lever 70 laterally in thebuckle 20. The release lever springs 80 act between therelease lever 70 and thebase 30. Therelease lever springs 80 bias the release lever 70 for pivoting movement in a clockwise direction as viewed inFIGS. 6-13 . Thus, under the influence of therelease lever springs 80, therelease lever 70 has a closed, or rest, position as shown inFIG. 6 . Therelease lever 70 is movable, under the influence of force applied by a user or by thelocking pawl 60, as described below, out of the closed condition. - The tongue 22 (
FIG. 5 ) in the illustrated embodiment is made as one piece from a suitable material, such as steel. Thetongue 22 has a generally planar configuration including two longitudinally extendingside bars 82 and threecross bars - A first opening in the form of a
cutout 90 is defined between thefirst cross bar 84 and thesecond cross bar 86. Thecutout 90 is a space in thetongue 22 into which a portion of a locking pawl can enter. Asecond opening 92 in the form of a slot is defined between thesecond cross bar 86 and thethird cross bar 88. Theslot 92 is adapted to receive a loop of thestrap 12, thereby to connect the strap with thetongue 22. - The
first cross bar 84 has a leadingedge 94 that forms a leading edge of the tongue 22 (leading in the direction of movement of the tongue to engage the buckle, i.e., to the left as viewed inFIGS. 6-7 ). Thesecond cross bar 86 has a leadingedge 96 that partially defines thecutout 90 in thetongue 22. - The
buckle 20 has a free condition as shown inFIG. 6 . In this condition, thelocking pawl 60 is biased in a first direction by thepawl spring 68 to a position in which thefirst leg 62 of the locking pawl extends upward (in a direction away from thebottom wall 32 of the base 30). Thefirst leg 62 of thelocking pawl 60 extends at least partially into theslot 40 in thebase 30, to obstruct the slot. Therelease lever 70 is biased in a first direction by therelease lever springs 80 to a position overlying thetop flanges 38 of thebase 30. Thefirst leg 62 of the lockingpawl 60 may, as shown inFIG. 6 , extend at least partially into theopening 72 in therelease lever 70. - To engage the
tongue 22 with thebuckle 20, the tongue is inserted into theslot 40 at thefront end 42 of the buckle, as shown schematically in the sequence of drawings labeledFIGS. 6-11 . As this movement of thetongue 22 occurs, the leadingedge 94 of the tongue engages thefirst leg 62 of the lockingpawl 60, which obstructs theslot 40. The force transmitted by the movingtongue 22 causes the lockingpawl 60 to pivot about thefirst pivot axis 52, in a counter-clockwise or second direction as viewed inFIGS. 6-11 , against the biasing force of thepawl spring 68. - As the linear movement of the
tongue 22 and the pivoting movement of the lockingpawl 60 continue, thesecond leg 64 of the locking pawl pivots upward into the buckle slot 40 (FIG. 7 ). At this time, thetongue 22 has moved into thebuckle slot 40 far enough that thecutout 90 in the tongue is near thefirst pivot axis 52. Therefore, as thesecond leg 64 of the lockingpawl 60 pivots upward, thesecond leg 64 moves into thecutout 90 of thetongue 22, as shown inFIGS. 7-9 . - As the
tongue 22 continues to insert, the leadingedge 94 of the tongue continues to engage thefirst leg 62 of the lockingpawl 60 and the locking pawl continues to pivot, through the positions shown inFIGS. 7 and 8 to the position shown inFIG. 9 . In this position, thesecond leg 64 of the lockingpawl 60 moves upward through the cutout in thetongue 22 and into engagement with the lower side surface of thehandle portion 76 of therelease lever 70. The continued pivoting movement of the lockingpawl 60 causes therelease lever 70 to be lifted (pivoted) a small amount, as shown inFIG. 9 and 10, moving in a second direction, until thesecond leg 64 of the locking pawl moves into theopening 72 in the release lever. Therelease lever 70 then snaps back into its original position, moving in the first direction under the influence of the release lever springs 80. - When the
release lever 70 is thus returned to its closed position (FIG. 10 ), the biasing force of thepawl spring 68 causes thesecond leg 64 of the lockingpawl 60 to pivot (in a clockwise direction as viewed inFIGS. 10 and 11 ) so as to engage theedge surface 78 on thehandle portion 76 of the release lever. This engagement blocks further pivoting movement of the lockingpawl 60 in the clockwise direction. - Thus, when the
tongue 22 is fully engaged or fully inserted in thebuckle 20, thesecond leg 64 of the lockingpawl 60 extends through thecutout 90 of thetongue 22 and is also located in thecutout 72 of therelease lever 70. Any force on thetongue 22, tending to pull the tongue out of the buckle 20 (FIG. 12 ), is transmitted to the lockingpawl 60 and thus causes the locking pawl to engage theedge surface 78 on therelease lever 70. The engagement of the lockingpawl 60 with therelease lever 70 blocks further rotation of the locking pawl. - In this position of the parts, the
second leg 64 of the lockingpawl 60 extends through thecutout 90 in thetongue 22. As a result, thetongue 22 can move in the release direction out of the buckle 20 (to the right as viewed inFIGS. 12 and 13 ) only until thefirst cross bar 84 of the tongue engages thesecond leg 64 of the lockingpawl 60. This engagement blocks further movement of thetongue 22 in the release direction, and thus blocks removal of the tongue from thebuckle 20. Thelatch assembly 10 is thus fully engaged. - To open the
buckle 20, therelease lever 70 is lifted (FIG. 13 ) and pivoted in the second direction about thesecond pivot axis 56. When therelease lever 70 is raised sufficiently, thehandle portion 76 of the release lever moves out of engagement with thesecond leg 64 of the lockingpawl 60. Thesecond leg 64 of the lockingpawl 60 is no longer located in thecutout 72 of therelease lever 70. Thepawl spring 68 urges the lockingpawl 60 to pivot clockwise, toward its initial position, thereby moving thesecond leg 64 of the locking pawl out of thecutout 90 in thetongue 22. The lockingpawl 60 no longer blocks movement of thetongue 22 out of thebuckle 20. Thetongue 22 is free to pull out of thebuckle 20 under tensile force applied to the tongue by thestrap 12. - As the locking
pawl 60 returns to its initial position, the force of thepawl spring 68, transmitted through the locking pawl, may assist thetongue 22 in disengaging from thebuckle 20. Even if this does not occur, however, the free rotation of the lockingpawl 60 about thefirst pivot axis 52 still permits thetongue 22 to disengage from thebuckle 20 with little or no resistance. - In this manner, the
latch assembly 10 is released by simply lifting therelease lever 70, and tensile force on thetongue 22 will pull the tongue out from thebuckle 20. Even if an extreme tension or load is applied to thestrap 12, causing thetongue 22 to pull the lockingpawl 60 tightly against thehandle portion 76 of therelease lever 70, the release lever can still be lifted away from the locking pawl because of its relatively long lever arm and the fact that the force of the locking pawl is acting on the release lever in a direction transverse to the lifting direction of the release lever. Thus, thelatch assembly 10 provides relatively “fail safe” un-latching or disengagement of thestrap 12, even where thetongue 22 may be damaged or where an extreme tension or load is applied to the strap. This avoids the undesirable consequence of having to cut thestrap 12 to release theload 14. - The
latch assembly 10 may optionally be provided with atamper detection device 100. Thetamper detection device 100 may be a mechanism that prevents or resists, or shows, movement of therelease lever 70 out of the release position. In one embodiment, as shown inFIG. 2 , twosmall holes 102 may be provided, one on either side of the top of the release lever. The holes allow for atamper detection member 104 to be placed through one or both of theholes 102 and through theslot 92 of thetongue 22. Thetamper detection member 104 may be, for example, a wire of some type than can have its two ends connected to form a ring. Thetamper detection member 104 need not lock the release lever in place, but may merely provide a visual indication as to whether theload 14 has been tampered with or opened up. This method of tamper detection may help an end user save on the cost of lost or stolen materials. Thetamper detection device 100 may also help to prevent thelatch assembly 10 from being inadvertently released by preventing opening movement of therelease lever 70.
Claims (17)
1. A latch assembly including:
a buckle; and
a tongue for releasably engaging the buckle, the tongue having a cutout;
the buckle including a base having a slot for receiving the tongue;
the buckle also including a locking pawl pivotally attached to the base and engageable by the tongue, to pivot the locking pawl so that the locking pawl engages in the cutout of the tongue when the tongue is inserted in the slot of the base; and
the buckle also including a release lever pivotally attached to the base, the release lever having a cutout receiving the locking pawl to engage the release lever when the tongue is inserted in the slot of the base.
2. A latch assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein:
the tongue pivots the locking pawl in a first direction against a biasing force exerted by a first biasing member, the first biasing member biasing the locking pawl to pivot in a second direction relative to the base; and
the buckle includes a second biasing member for biasing the release lever to pivot in a first direction relative to the base.
3. A latch assembly as set forth in claim 2 wherein the release lever is pivoted in a second direction by the locking pawl upon movement of the locking pawl into the cutout in the release lever, then pivots back in the first direction.
4. A latch assembly as set forth in claim 2 wherein the release lever is manually pivotable in a second direction against the biasing force of the second biasing member to release the locking pawl from engagement with the release lever thereby to release the tongue for removal from the buckle.
5. A latch assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein the locking pawl has a generally L-shaped configuration including a first leg that is engageable by the tongue to pivot the locking pawl in the first direction and a second leg that pivots into the cutout in the tongue and the cutout in the release lever.
6. A latch assembly as set forth in claim 5 wherein the second leg of the locking pawl is engageable with a surface on the release lever to block removal of the tongue from the buckle.
7. A latch assembly as set forth in claim 1 further including a tamper detection device.
8. A latch assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein the tamper detection device includes a mechanism for indicating pivoting movement of the release lever.
9. A latch assembly including:
a buckle; and
a tongue that is movable in a first direction into engagement with the buckle and in a second direction opposite the first direction out of engagement with the buckle;
the tongue having a leading edge portion and a trailing edge portion on opposite sides of an opening in the tongue;
the leading edge portion having a leading edge of the tongue that is presented in the first direction;
the trailing edge portion having a trailing edge of the tongue that is presented in the first direction and that partially defines the opening in the tongue;
the buckle having a pivotally supported locking pawl that is engageable sequentially by the leading edge of the tongue and by the trailing edge of the tongue to pivot the locking pawl in a locking direction by a first amount and by a second amount so that the locking pawl engages in the opening of the tongue when the tongue is engaged with the buckle.
10. A latch assembly as set forth in claim 9 wherein the buckle further includes a release lever;
the release lever having an edge surface defining a second opening for receiving the locking pawl when the locking pawl pivots by the second amount, the locking pawl engaging on the edge surface of the release lever to block pivoting movement of the locking pawl in a release direction thereby to block removal of the tongue in the second direction from the buckle.
11. A latch assembly comprising:
a buckle, and a tongue releasably engageable with the buckle;
the buckle including a base, a locking pawl engageable by the tongue and pivotally supported on the base for movement in a locking direction and a release direction, and a release lever pivotally supported on the base and engageable by the locking pawl;
the latch assembly having a latched and tensioned condition in which the tongue is engaged with the buckle, tension on the tongue pulls the tongue against the locking pawl and pulls the locking pawl against the release lever, and the engagement of the locking pawl with the release lever blocks movement of the locking pawl and thereby blocks movement of the tongue out of the buckle;
the latching assembly being movable out of the latched and tensioned condition by moving the release lever thereby to release the locking pawl for movement under tension applied by the tongue, thereby to release the tongue for movement out of the buckle.
12. A latch assembly as set forth in claim 11 wherein the release lever has a cutout and an edge surface at least partially defining the cutout;
when the latch assembly is in the latched and tensioned condition a portion of the locking pawl extending into the cutout in the release lever and engaging the edge surface of the release lever, the engagement of the locking pawl portion with the edge surface of the release lever blocking movement of the locking pawl and thereby blocking movement of the tongue out of the buckle.
13. A latch assembly as set forth in claim 11 wherein the locking pawl is pivotable in the locking direction under force applied by the tongue to move the latch assembly into the latched and tensioned condition, pivotal movement of the locking pawl in the locking direction lifting the release lever from a rest position to enable the locking pawl portion to move into the cutout in the release lever, the release lever pivoting back to the resting condition under the force of a return spring to place the edge surface in a position in which it blocks pivotal movement of the locking pawl in the release direction under tension on the tongue.
14. A method of releasably engaging a latch assembly, comprising the steps of:
inserting a tongue into a slot of a buckle;
engaging a first leg of a pivotally mounted locking pawl of the buckle with the tongue;
pivoting the locking pawl under force applied by the tongue so that a second leg of the locking pawl moves through a cutout in the tongue into engagement with a release lever of the buckle;
pivoting the release lever under force applied by the second leg of the locking pawl; and
moving the second leg of the locking pawl into a cutout in the release lever, while the second leg of the pawl extends through the cutout in the tongue.
15. A method as set forth in claim 14 wherein the step of pivoting the locking pawl so that a second leg of the locking pawl moves through a cutout in the tongue into engagement with a release lever of the buckle, comprises pivoting the locking pawl in a first direction against a first biasing force;
the step of moving the second leg of the pawl into a cutout in the release lever comprises further pivoting the locking pawl in the first direction against the first biasing force; and
the step of pivoting the release lever with the second leg of the pawl comprises pivoting the release lever in a first direction against a second biasing force.
16. A method as set forth in claim 15 further comprising the steps of:
pivoting the release lever in a second direction under the second biasing force, after the second leg of the locking pawl moves into the cutout in the release lever, and
engaging the second leg of the locking pawl with an edge surface of the release lever to block further pivoting movement of the locking pawl in the second direction under the second biasing force.
17. A method as set forth in claim 16 further comprising the steps of:
pivoting the release lever in the first direction under a manually applied release force opposite to the second biasing force so that the locking pawl is not in the cutout of the release lever; and
pivoting the locking pawl in the second direction under the first biasing force to move the locking pawl out of the cutout in the tongue.
