PACKAGE Filed Jan. 15, 1934 Patented July 2, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PACKAGE Charles Weiner, Chicago, Ill., assignor to Chicago Printed String 00., Chicago, 111., a corporation of Illinois Application January 15, 1934, Serial No. 706,596
9 Claims.
The'present invention relates to package and is herein described as a novel and convenient package for merchandising wrapped material, such as'tying tape or the like, which package of 5 merchandise is sold retail at low price.
The present invention has to do with a novel core so constructed as to prevent formation of creases in material wound about it and which core structure is economical to manufacture, is light in weight, and yet at the same time possesses adequate strength and rigidity purpose intended.
Heretoiore it has been customary to for the package material such as tying tape or the like, as a package comprising a length of material wound about a flat core, such as cardboard. Such manner of winding has caused creases in thematerial where the same is bent about the edges of the core, and such creases are difficult, if not impossible,
to eliminate.
When such creased material has been utilized for use, and particularly tape utilized for tying packages, especially gift packages, thecreases in the tape result in unsightly tied articles.
about it.
A still further object of the invention-is to provide a novel, cheap, strong core for receiving wound material, so constructed as toprevent formation of creases in the material.
The above, other and further objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description, accompanying drawing, and appended claims.
I"he accompanying drawing illustrates embodiments of the present invention, together with the method of carrying out the same, views thereof are as follows:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a Wrapped and the package utilizing a core constructed in accordance with the principles of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is an end view oi the core of Fig. 1,
with the wound material omitted.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through Fig. 1, taken substantially in the plane indicated .by the line III of Fig.1.
Fig. 4 is a developed blank of which of Figs. 1, 2 and 3, is made.
the core modified form.
The drawing will now be explained.
The core utilized in the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 is fashioned from a blank of suitable material, such as cardboard,
and is shown developed in Fig, 4,
The blank illustrated in Fig. 4 consists of a strip of cardboard having the ends cut to proand 2, with the side margins of the extensions notched at 3 and 4 respectively. Notches 5 and 6 are made in the side margins of the blank, midway of its ends, which notches are preferably slightlywider than the material to be wound about the com- Between the notches 5 and 6 and each end of the blank, longitudinal and transverse slits, 'l and 8 respectively, are made in the blank, to thereby provide longitudinally ex- The slits l and 8 are so fashioned that when theblank is fiat, the tangs 3 and I9, at any of the slits l and 8,

tending tangs 9 and I0.
extend toward each other. To assemble the blank of Fig. 4 as from slipping off of the core when so wound.
The material wound about, such a core, herein illustrated as a tape A, is wound about the core as is customary, and then the free end of the tape is passed about the body of the core and surrounding the wound strands, and passes through the notches 5 and 6 with the free end of the tape passed through a bend l l formed in the tape for passing it through the side notches,
,with the free end' of the tape then'secured to some convenient part of the. core, as by a sticker or label l2. In applying the tape sidewise about the core and the wound strands, the central portion of the core is drawn together, as shown in Fig. 3 thus tending to hold the Wound material safely inposition on the core.
I a core, the blank is folded about the reduced portion formed by the slits 'l and ,8, and the end extensions. I and 2 brought together and suitably secured-as by glueingor pasting. The formation of the notches 3 and 4' adjacent the ends of the blank, cooperate to provide notches corresponding to the notches 5 and 6, and in register therewith, whenthe blank is looped as described. When the blank is looped, as just described,.the tangs 9 and I0 extend outwardly at the ends of the loops, and constitute guides for the material wound about the core for preventing the material The modified form illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 consists of a cardboard body l3 notched at its ends to provide guides l4 and I5 and also notched intermediate its ends to pr vide side notches I6 and IT. The end portions or parts of the core of this modification, are formed by cylindrical members l8 which are slotted at l9 and passedover the ends of the body l3 between the guides l4 and 15. The slotting of the cylindrical members l8 results in a tendency of these members to firmly grip the body l3 with sufficient engagement for all practical purposes. In this form of the invention, the tape is wound about the core as heretofore described and with the cross portion of the strand engaged through the notches l6 and H with its free end stuck to some convenient part of the core.
It will be observed that the core of the present invention may be made of inexpensive sheet 'material, without high labor cost, and may be quickly assembled for use. The provision of the arcuate end members of the bodyenables winding material about the core without forming creases in such material.
The end extensions I and 2 may be overlapped forcompleting the loop, in which event one of theseextensions, for instance, the extension I, may lie-provided with suitableadhesive. These extensions may also be connected together by means of gummed strips applied to the abutting extensions! and 2 when formed into loop shape.
-It will be observed that the core of the present invention lends itself very readily to economical manufacture on a production basis, and is so constructed as to possess sufficient rigidity for the purpose intended. Furthermore it will be observed that the core prevents formation of creases in' the material wound about it thus eliminating this objection to the present manner of winding such material on fiat cores.
'It will be observed that the finished package of merchandise, wound in accordance with the principlesof the present invention, possesses, in side elevation; the appearance of a figure 8.
The invention has been described herein more or less precisely as to details, yet it is to'be ,understood that the invention is not to be limited thereby, as changes may be made in the arrangement and proportion of parts, and equivalents may be substituted, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. a
