Description

L. M. MONROE July 2, 1935 OIL FILTER Filed Aug. 12, 1932 ATTORNEYS closure 12. The cleaner bar 5 extends into these grooves with end parts l9 running therealong up to the closure. A second cleaner bar 5a having cleaner disks 6a thereon may be arranged between the parts I9 as indicated Figs. 1, 2 and 6. By this arrangement the cleaner is removable with the carrier as a unit, upon removal of the closure l2; and when the parts are assembled as illustrated, the cleaner is secured in the casing. Preferably the grooves i8 extend slightly longer than the cleaner end parts I9 allowing the latter limited movement longitudinally of the casing.
A compression spring 29 is arranged about the post l5 to bear between the lower carrier head 4 and a web 2| in the casing, the web havingan enlarged opening 22 which allows free flow of liquid while the web forms an abutment for the spring. The spring is of suiiicient strength to urge thevcarrier upwardly toward the inlet end of the casing until its motion limited by the cleaner bar 5 The parts are so p'oportioned and arranged that under certain pressure conditions at the inlet end of the casing the carrier Willbe lowered, against the action of the spring 20 until the cleaner bar 5a is, engaged by the upper head of the carrier, as indicated Fig. 6.
The casing is provided with a bypass clearance 23 ada ted to become operative as indicated Fig. 6, when the carrier is lowered to this extreme p iti n.
Operation will be as follows, assuming the parts as indicated Figs. 1 and 2, the casing being mounted vertically disposed as shown, as by brackets 24 and liquid entering through the inlet connection IO. Flow will be downwardly first through the openings l3. opening I3 directsfiowing liquid toward the sump l6 or onto the masses [1 whereentrained solid particles are removed, first adhering to the masses I1 and ultimately settling into the sump.
I6 therebelow. Liquid flowing through the oblique openings I3 is directed against and along the elements I of the near filter screen unit, that is or the near row of elements, tending to wipe them free of accumulations. The liquid passes through the clearances 3 of the near screen,
the screen removing entrained solid particles which cannot pass through the minute clearance openings3.
these being substantially filled by the parts l9, Similarly because of the frame. parts 1 overlying these grooves and fitting the 01' the cleaner.
bore 9 of the casing, all flow transverse of the screens must be by way of the openings 3 therein. Ultimately foreign matter will accumulate upon the first filter screen tending to close its open' ings -3. This will result in increased resistance to flow. As soon as this resistance becomes great enough to overcome the action of the spring 20, by the preponderance ofpressure above abutments 4 over the pressure below the abutments;
the carrier will be moved downwardly as apressure responsive plunger until the cleaner bar 5 reaches the lower ends of the grooves 18, the
cleaner moving with the carrier to this extent; Thereupon the cleaner will be fixed but the car- .rier may continue downwardlygthe cleaner mo- The central alignedv From the first screen the liquid flows through the second screen immediately theree behind and into the chmnber 25 back ofthe 7 tion terminatingwith a bump or jar as its limit screens, thus cleaned, is reduced to a normal amount, the pressure above the carrier will be correspondingly reduced and the spring 25! will return the carrier to its original shown position. This cleaning action obviously takes place entirely automatically.
Should the cleaning action for any reason fail to take place, the carrier will continue downwardly until attaining the position of Fig. 6, in which the upper head 4 of the carrier moves opposite the bypass clearance Thereupon the filter screens are bypassed, flow being had by way of the bypass 23 and openings i4. Thus if the filter be employed a lubricating system, lubrication will not fail even though the straining of the lubricant might be temporarily interrupted.
