ticket punch which comprises a punch member adapted to sever rides or similar units from` a' large ticket which comprises a plurality of lsuch rides or smallunits. The ticket punch is provided with means yfor indicating each time that itis actuated,V properly or improperly, to sever a "ride or unit from a ticket.l Other means on the ticket punch indicates each time the ticket punch is employed properly to punch a lride or unit from the ticket. The indicating means preferablycomprise counting devices-and it will be understood readily that the record offthe number of times that the punch has been actuated properly maybe subtracted from the total number of times the ticket punch has been operated so that the number of times the ticket punch has been actuated improperly will be known.

The handles vI5 and I6 are .provided withv jaws '20y andV 2|, respectively. The jaw 2| is provided with lticket-receiving vslots 22 andk23. The free ,end of the jaw 2|) is provided with a punch pin`- 24 which may be projected through apertures 25 and 26 provided in the jaw 2| oneither side ofthe slot 23. A compression spring 28 disposed between the handles |5-and I6 yieldingly holds them in lthe. positions vwhereinrrthey areshown in Fig. 1.

Cutting edges 42 and 43 are formed where the surfaces 39 and 40 meet the surface 33.
Referring to Fig. 8, it will be noted that the top surface 33 of the punch member 38 normally lies flush with the bottom surface of the slot 22. It is readily understood that if the handles I5 and I6 are displaced toward each other against the action ofthe spring 28, the punch `member 38 will move upwards in the slot 34 and that certain edges of the top surface 33 will co-operate with the lower edges of the slot 34 to sever a unit or a ride from a ticket I0 which is shown lin Fig. 10. The edges of the punch member 30 which perform this cutting operation are identified by the reference characters45and 46 in Fig. 9. After one of the units has been severed from the ticket I0, the operator, if he is manipulating the punch properly, should continue to displace the handles I5 and I8 toward each other so that the severed unit will be ydriven .up into `the slot 34.
The second punch member or die 48 projects into the slot 34 and into the path of the `severed section II which is pushed upwards through the slot 34. The die 48 engages a small square Ila of the severed section I'|. A tension spring 49 has one end secured to the die 48andhas its otherend secured to a pin 50 which projects from the 'jaw 2|. The spring 49 `yieldingly holds the Idie 48 in the position wherein itis shown in Fig. 8, but when the severed section is pushed upwards through theslot 34, the die 48 ymoves upward with the severed section |2| against the Aaction of the spring 49 until itstrikes a shoulder V52 provided in the jaw 2| (Fig. 8). vContinued displacement `of the punch lmem'ber 30 towards the top of the slot 34 will cause thedie '48 toco-operate with the-cutting edges 42and 43 to sever Athesmall square I la from the severed'section I| so that the spring 49 -may retract the die y48 and drive the severed square I Ia down into fthe notch 88. The square Iathus severed from the section II will be ejected rfrom the punch through la slot 55 provided in the jaw 2|.
It will lbe noted that the punch member 30 is provided witha downwardly Iextending stem 30h slidably journaled in a bore 88o formed inthe upper end ofthe plunger 30a. Interposedbetween the punch member 30 andthe bottom surface of the bore 30e is -a `compression spring 30e which yieldingly urges the punch lmember '30 upwardly.
Obviously, if no ticket I8 has been inserted in the slot 22, the handles v| 5 and |'6 maybe displaced toward each other and the punch 38 and the plunger 30a will move upwardly vwithout any appreciable compression of the spring e. If a ticket is inserted in the slot 22, the spring 30e will be compressed'before the punchmember 80 severs a Section from the ticket.
As best shown in Figs. 5, 6, 'l and 9, a dog`18has its lower end pivotally mounted in a ynotch 1| provided in the rplunger 30a. The upper end of the dog 10 is beveled as at 12 andengages a cam surface 13 `formed in a. notch 14, the notch 14 being cut into the lower end of the punch member 38. The dog 10 is provided with an'outwardly projecting finger or lug 15. A leaf spring18'flxed to'the plunger 3Ila-tends to hold the dog'18 in the position wherein it is shown in Figs. 6 and 9. However, if there `is any displacement between the punch member 30 and the plunger 38a, sufficient to-compressfthe spring 30e as illustretedin Fig. 7, theV cam surface 13 will co-operate with the beveled surface 12 to displace the dog 10 from the position wherein it is shown in Fig. 6 to the position wherein it is shown in Fig. 7. If, when the dog 18 is in the position in which it is illustrated in Fig. 6, the plunger 38a and the punch member 30 are driven upwardly, the finger or lug 15 will not engage a lever 18 pivoted to the jaw 2| by a pin 19. But, if the dog 10 has been displaced into the position wherein it is shown in Fig. '7, it will strike and displacel the lever 18 when `the plunger 30a 4and the punch' member 30 are driven upwardly in the jaw 2 I.

respectively, which will actuate the counters when 'they are displaced angularly.
One end of the lever 18 is engageable with the lever A83'and the lever 82 is engageable by a nger 85 pivoted by a pin 86 to the die 48 (Figs. 2 and 8). 'The 'finger 85 is held normally byafleaf spring y88 in the `position wherein yit is shown in Fig/2, the leaf spring 88 being secured to the die 48. Formed integral with the lever 18 is a finger 90 'which will engage vand :displace the finger 85 angularly against the action of ythe spring 88 when the lever 18 is displaced from the position wherein it is shown in Fig.` 2 to the :position wherein it is shown in Fig. 4. The flever 18 is adapted to be displaced in Vthis directionby the finger or lug 15 in the manner described above when aticket occupies the slot 22 sovthat the spring '38e is compressed during the ticket punch ing operation. When the finger 85 is displaced by the finger 90 toi-the position wherein it is vshown in Fig. 4, it displaces the lever 82 angularly during the upwardfmovement ofthe die 48 and actua'tes the counter 80. In the event `no ticket occupies the slot 22 when the handles I5 and I8 are displaced toward each other, `the finger or `lug 15 kdoes not displace `the lever 18 angularly during the upward movement of the punchmember 30 and the plunger 30a. This prevents the finger 98 from angularly displacing the finger 85` and the finger 85 does not actuate the counter 8|); It is `also obvious that if `no ticket occupies the slot 22 during upward `movement of the'ypunch member v3|), I'the lever 18 will not be displaced angularly to actuate the counter 8|.` However, if a ticket occupies the slot 22 andthe punch is manipulated in such manner that a section III' is severed from the ticket :I8 but is not driven upwardly in the slot 34 to sever the square Ilal from the severed section I I, =the flngerior Elug ,-15 will be displaced into the position wherein it lis shown in Fig. 4 `so that it will cause the lever 18 to actuate the counter 8|, but as the plunger 30a is not given a full stroke, the upper endyof thepin 85 will not engage the lever A82 to vactuate'ethe counter 80.' Therefore, it rwill be readily understood that if a ticket I0 occupies 'the slot 22, the counter 8| will register yeach `time a section I|| or a part thereof is severed from fthe ticket-even though fthe square Ha. `is rnot severed Ifrom the section. The counter 80 will register only when substantially the full section is rst severed from the ticket and the square IIais subsequent-'f ly severed from the section. The difference between the totals on the two counters will indicate the number of times vthe `punch -was voperated improperly while a ticket |0,\or1the equivalent, occupied the lslot 22pm the manner illustrated .in Fig. 8 and in addition, this difference willv indicate thenumber of times-the punch was operated limproperly .by inserting the ticket .|0'1into thefslot asf n place the lingery 85'upwardl'y to actuate the counter 80. Y If the Ipunch is operated to punch a ticket andi-the audible signal is not'heard', it is an'indication that the punch was actuated'irnproperly-- The counters B0 and 8|, the lever `18 and the fingers 15, 85 and 90 are preferably enclosed by'a housing-95 which is detachaloly secured/to the jaw 2| by screws 96. An' eye 91` projecting from the jaw 2| and through a ange of the housingv 95 is adapted to receive a' rsealing device 90v which must be left intactiby'the conductor when the punch is returned to-'the rrailroad company to beaudited. Of coursefthe seal 98 will bereplaced by a new seal after the auditing operation. The ticket I0 is of usual construction and has the sections II indicated j-thereon b-y suitable markings. Fig. 1l illustrates vthe manner in which the square I Ia is severed from a section I I. The improved punch may also be employed in connection with tickets which are good for only one ride. If such a ticket is inserted in the slot 23 and the handles I5 andy I8 are displaced toward each other, the punch pin 24 will cut a small disc from the ticket indicating that it has been cancelled.
Referring now to Figs'. 12 to 14, inclusive, wherein av punch embodying another form of the. inventionv is shown, the reference characters I I5 and IIE designate the handles of the punchwhich comprises jaws |20 and |2|, respectively. The handles II5 and IIS and the jaws |20 and |2| are identical in construction with the handles I5 and I6 and the: jaws 20 and 2| described above, Ithe jaw I 2| being provided ywith ticket receiving slots |22 and |23 which correspond to the ticket receiving slots 22 and 23, respectively. The jaw |2| is provided with ticket punch apparatus which is identical in construction with the ticket punch apparatus mounted in the jaw 2 I, described above, and it functions in the Isame manner. Projecting. from the: ticket punch apparatus'lofthe .jaw `|2| is aiinger |15'which'cor-f responds ytothe finger. 15 ofA the punch shown Figs. 1 to 9, inclusive. The nger |15 'is carried by a' dog. I10 :which is identical in construction with theidog `10 described above, and is displaced in the same manner whenthe punch is operated to 'sever a-'section I I fromna ticket I0.

The lever. 2021s vyieldingly urged against the pin 200v by a leaf springll.A 'i v If it is assumed that a ticket V| 0 is placed in the slot I 22 inthe proper manner and that the punchis operated properly to rst sever a section or unit I I from the ticket and then severa square I Ia from the severed sectionl I, it will be readily understood that the pin 20o will dispiace the level` 202 in a'counter-'clockwise direction (Figs. 12 and 13) against the action of the"`spring`2|0' and withdraw the'n'otch 208 from engagement with the iinger 201 so thatwhen the 'finger |15 displaces the nger 201 fromthe position Wherein it is shown in Fig. l2 to the position wherein it is showninlig. 13, thel finger' 201 will not actu"y ate the meniber'204 and the counter 205 willnot register. However, if the ticket is not rinserted in the slot |22 suiciently far-to cause the die |48 to `be lifted during the ticketpunching operation, the lever 202 will not be swung up out of the path of the finger 201 and the finger 201 will engage the notch 206 to reciprocate the lever 202 and the member 204. Such displacement of the member 204 causes the counter 205 to register.` Therefore, the counter 205 will register each time the punch isoperated, improperly and it will indicate the total number of times the punch has been `operated improperly over any given period of time'.
The counter 205 and the actuating mechanism therefore are preferably enclosed within a housing |95 which corresponds to the housing 95,
described above, and is secured to the corre` spending jaw in the same manner and by similar means. f

A ticket punch comprising a punch member for severing a section from a ticket, a counter for recording each time a ,section is severed from a v ticket, means `for severing aiportion of said section from it, and a second counter actuated by said punch member .for recording each time a portion of a section is severed from it.

A ticket punch comprising a pair .of handles pivoted `to each other,jaws carried by said handles, one of said jaws being provided with an aperture, a punch member slidably mounted in the last mentioned jaw and co-operating with said aperture to sever sections from tickets, a plunger slidably mounted `in the last mentioned jaw, re-
silient rmeans between saidpunch member and said plunger, means operatively lconnecting said plunger to the other jaw, a counter, and means responsive to displacement of said punch member relative to said plunger for `actuating said counter.
