It is shown in this'embodiment as being attached to the lower stub section by means of a line of adhesive I9. It will thus be seen that the entire assembly including the binding stub portion thereof is pliable throughout its extent and is'also very thin and devoid of excess bulk or thickness, whereby it is very well adapted for insertion into writing position in various forms of writing machines including the type of machine using a cylindrical platen. Due to its pliability, the assembly readily conforms to the cylindrical platen surface without wrinkling, or bulging, or assuming other objectionable irregularities. It is to be kept in mind that the disclosure of Fig. 1 and of other figures. is partially diagrammatic, the leaves of the assembly being separated some distance from each other in order to disclose the structure satisfactorily. In normal operative position the leaves lie in close contact with each other so that the thickness of the assembly is just about the same as the combined thickness of the constituent leaves.

As illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, it will be noticed that the transfer leaf I2 is unprovided with severance weakening corresponding to the'weakened severance lines it; and I1, this leaf being of its full original strength all the way up to the binding attachment i9 which is shown as disposed between the severance line I! and the weakened fold line I 5. In case it is desired to sever thetransfer leaf from the binding and to leave one or more of the record leaves attached thereto;
as more fully described below, the transfer leaf may then be provided with a weakened severance line similar to the weakened severance lines I 8 and II. It will thus be noticed that the weakened severance lines are selectively arranged and positioned'in the record and transfer leaves for the purpose of facilitating the desired selective severance of the leaves from the assembly. Or, looking at it in another way, severance lines are positioned in selected leaves while other selected leaves are not correspondingly weakened.

It will, therefore, readily be seen that the rear ends of the record leaves may be selectively gripped to the exclusion of the transfer leaf. If the transfer leaf is to be severed from the binding as above suggested, it will be understood that the thumb notch will be formed in the corresponding record leaf and will be omitted from the transfer leaf. In other words, the notches are selectively positioned in the desired selected leaves, while the other leaves are unprovided with such notches.
In use, after an inscription has been completed, the assembly may be gripped at its top end at the binding 58 and at,its bottom end in alignment with the thumb notch 2i and a tearing pull to the stub whereupon it is readily withdrawn from the assembly at the same movement by which the severance is accomplished. Therefore, the record leaves are severed from the assembly and the transfer leaf removed from between them at a single movement. This may be accomplished very quickly and simply and with slight exertion. In case it is desired to remove the original record leaf in leaving the carbon and duplicate leaves attached to each other, the original may be thrown forwardly and severed from the stub along the weakened fold line i 5. Supplemental data may thereafter be entered upon an overlying record leaf and simultaneously transferred to the duplicate leaf i l. After this the transfer leaf l2 and duplicate it may be separated from each other as above described. The folded sheet forming the original and duplicate record leaves provides a protective envelope in which the transfer leaf is enclosed and protected. Also, the attachment or attached margin of the transfer leaf is positioned directly in the fold of the outer sheet and adjacent to the fold line of the latter. In this manner the inner leaf or leaves of the assembly are completely protected during usage.
The modified form of the invention disclosed in Fig. 3 is similar to that of Fig. 1 and corresponding parts are indicated by the same reference numerals with the addition of the index a. In this embodiment the original leaf lUa is unprovided with a weakened severance line at its top end corresponding to the severance line I 6 of Fig. 1, but is attached directly to the stub l8a through the weakened fold line l5a, serving as a detaching lineflfor the leaf Illa.

This provides a selective grip device whereby the transfer leaf may be gripped to the exclusion of the record leaves and thus selectively severed from its binding along the severance line 22 in a manner above described. If it is desired to first detach the original leaf Illa this may be done by severing it along the line l5a, thus leaving the transfer and duplicate leaves still attached together, but they may be subsequently detached from the stub in the manner above described in connection with Fig. 1.
The embodiment of Fig. 5 is generally similar to the above embodiments and corresponding parts are designated by the same reference numerals with the addition of the index b. In this, as in the other two embodiments, the original and duplicate leaves are constructed from a single sheet folded along a transverse line which is the line |5b in Fig. 5. In this embodiment the selective severance lines Nb and 22b are arranged as in Figs. 3 and 4, while the original record leaf 10b is correspondingly unweakened and is attached directly to the stub l8b as is done in the embodiment of Fig. 3.
For the selective grip device for the form of Fig. 5, the transfer leaf 12b is formed with a thumb notch 25, while the overlying and underlying record leaves are unprovided with corresponding notches and are thus unmutilated at this point. After the inscriptions have been made, the original leaf I0b can be severed along the line I51), as abovedescribedleaving the carbon leaf attached at the binding stub. The two latter leaves maythen be detached from each other as above described.
In each of the different embodiments of the invention it will be noticed that the forward or top end of the assembly is protected by the fold between the two record leaves. This fold forms a protective envelope at the top end ,of the assembly in which the end of the transfer-leaf is receivedand protected. Thus, the forward end, usually the end introduced into a writing or manifolding machine, is smooth and free from projecting or unprotected edges. The entry of the assembly into such machines is therefore facilitated and the time required for this operation is reduced. This is of importance because the manifolding set-of this nature is commonly used for entering records of transactions at different times and it may be necessary to enter each unit into the machine twenty or thirty times before the record or statement is fully completed. A
It will be understood that the selective grip formations may be formed in various ways other than the illustrative forms above disclosed. For example, the selective grips could be formed by extending portions either of the record or transfer leaves beyond the margins of the other leaves to provide projecting tabs by means of which the leaves could be selectively severed from the stub and separated from each other in the manner above described. Ifsuch projecting tabs are utilized either upon the record or carbon leaves, they maybe readily detached after serving their purpose by means of weakened severance lines respectively dividing them from the bodies of the leaves.
Since the transfer leaves of the different embodiments are ordinarily used but a single time for completing the statement or other entries on the assembly, they are preferably made of thin or' tissue paper and the coating of carbon or transfer material on the surface is relatively thin and light. This helps to keep down the bulk of the assembly as well as the manufacturing cost. 'Ihe'transfer leaves may be discarded when they have served their purpose in the manifolding assembly.
Since certain changes may be made in the above article and different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as'illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. A unitary pliable manifolding assembly including, in combination, a .plurality of record leaves and at least one transfer leaf arranged in superposed transfer relation with each other, two of said record leaves including a single sheet folded along a transverse line positioned at the top or forward end of the assembly, and forming an outer envelope within which the transfer leaf is enclosed, said transfer leaf having attachment at a marginal part thereof with said sheet toward the top end of the assembly, the attached margin of said transfer leaf being positioned within the fold of said single sheet and adjacent the fold line of the latter, said record leaves having transverse weakened severance lines spaced inwardly a short distance from said fold line and positioned inwardly beyond said attachment of the transfer leaf and providing between the severance and fold lines a binding stub to which the top end of the transfer leaf is attached, said transfer leaf being unweakened corresponding to the severance lines of the record leaves to facilitate selective severance of the leaves from the stub.
2. A unitary pliable manifolding assembly including, in combination, a plurality of record leaves and at least one transfer leaf arranged in superposed transfer relation with each other, two of said record leaves including a single sheet folded along a transverse line positioned at the top or forward end of the assembly, and forming an outer envelope within which the transfer leaf is enclosed, said transfer leaf having attachment at a. marginal part thereof with said sheet toward the top end of the assembly, the attached margin of said transfer leaf being positioned within the fold of said single sheet and adjacent the fold line of the latter, said record leaves having transverse weakened severance lines spaced inwardly a short distance from said fold line and positioned inwardly beyond said attachment of the transfer leaf and providing between the severance and fold lines a binding stub to which the top end of the transfer leaf is attached, said transfer leaf being unweakened corresponding to the severance lines of the record leaves to facilitate selective severance of the leaves from the stub, said record leaves having marginal starter notches leading to the respective severancelines, and a selective grip forma at the top or forward end of the assembly, and
transfer leaf is enclosed, said transfer leaf hav- .ing attachment at a marginal part thereof with said sheet toward the top end of the assembly, the attached margin of said transfer leaf being positioned within the fold of said single sheet and adjacent the fold line of the latter, said record and transfer leaves havingone or niore weakened severance lines selectively arranged therein near but inwardly of said attachment while a selected leaf or leaves is correspondingly unweakened for facilitating selective severance of certain of said leaves from the assembly, and said single sheet having a weakened transverse severance line positioned substantially at the fold line thereof and outside of said transfer leaf attachment.

A unitary pliable manifolding assembly including', in combination, a plurality of record leaves and at least one transfer leaf arranged in superposed transfer relation with each other, two of said record leaves including a single sheet folded along a tansverse line positioned at the top or forward end of the assembly, and forming an outer envelope within which the transfer leaf is enclosed, said transfer leaf having attachment at a marginal part thereofwith said sheet toward the top end of the assembly, the attached margin of said transfer leaf being positioned within the fold of said single sheet and adjacent the fold line of the latter, said transfer leaf and one of said record leaves having transverse weakened severance lines spaced inwardly a short distance from said fold line and providing between the severance and fold lines a binding stub in which said marginal part of the transfer leaf has its attachment, said single sheet being weakened for severance substantially upon the fold line thereof, and. one of the record leaves of said single sheet being unweakened at parts corresponding to said weakened severance lines.
5. A unitary pliable manifolding assembly including, in combination, a plurality of record leaves and at least one transfer leaf arranged in superposed transfer relation with each other, two of said record leaves including a single sheet folded along a transverse line positioned at the top or forward end of the assembly, and forming an outer envelope within which the transfer leaf is enclosed, said transfer leaf having attachment aooapsov at a marginal part thereof with said sheet toward the top end of the assembly, the attached margin of said transfer leaf being positioned within the fold of said single sheet and adjacent the fold line of the latter, said transfer leaf and one of said record leaves having transverse weakened severance lines spaced inwardly a short distance from said fold line and providing between the severance and fold lines a binding stub in which said marginal part of the transfer leaf has its attachment, said single sheet being weakened for severance substantially upon the fold line thereof, one of the record leaves of said single sheet being unweakened at parts corresponding to said severance lines, and a selective grip formation for the assembly remote from said binding stub for facilitating selectively gripping said transfer leaf for severance thereof on its severance line from said stub while the record leaves remain attached together.
6. A unitary pliable manifolding assembly including, in combination, a plurality of record leaves and at least one transfer leaf arranged in superposed transfer relation with each other, two rof said record leaves including a single sheet folded along a transverse line positioned at the top or forwardend of the assembly, and forming an outer envelope within which the transfer leaf is enclosed, said transfer leaf having attachment at a marginal part thereof with said sheet toward the top end of the assembly, the attached margin of said transfer leaf being positioned within the fold of said single sheet and adjacent the fold line of the latter, saidtransfer leaf and one of said record leaves havingtransverse weakened severance lines spaced inwardly a short distance from said fold line and providing between the severance and fold lines a binding stub in which the top end of the transfer leaf is attached, said single sheet being weakened for severance substantially upon the fold line thereof, one of the record leaves of said single sheet being unweakened at parts corresponding to said severance lines, and a selective grip formation for the assembly remote from said binding stub including'a part of the record leaf projecting beyond the adjacentmarginal portion of the transfer leaves whereby one of the record leaves maybe gripped to the exclusion of the transfer leaf.
