The present invention relates to automatic machines or devices, and more particularly to a novel automatic operating machine for `iilling a container, box, package and the like, with a quantity of material, such as a plurality of pills, tablets,
or the like.
Among the objects of the present invention is to provide a novel machine having automatically operated means for transferring a quantity of material from a source of supply and depositing the same in a container in which the same is offered for sale. 1
Another object of the present invention is to provide a novel automatic machine, including means intermittently moved, for positioning empty containers or the like at intervals in a given location, at which point novel means is provided for depositing material, such as a plurality of tablets, or the like, therein.
The invention further comprehends the idea of providing novel means for wrapping a given quantity of material during the transfer thereof from a source of supply to an empty container, such means including means vassociated with the transfer means for properly positioning the Wrapping material, whereby the material is evenly and uniformly wrapped `when deposited in the empty container.
Still another object of the invention is to provide means, in an automatic machine for filling empty containers, for closing .these containers when filled so that the same are in condition to lbe packed for shipment.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel automatic machine having means for transfer of a quantity of material from a source of supply and for depositing the same in an empty container, this machine further including means operated to deposit a filler in the container and in association with the material to prevent damage thereof after the same has been packed, and during shipment. This filler serves the dual function of not only preventing damage to the material, but likewise includes printed matter for instructing the consumer as to the properuse of the material.
s The invention further contemplates the idea of providing means, in an automatic machine for filling empty containers, for cutting or severing wrapping portions from a lroll of Wrapping material at the proper interval and in a position immediately adjacent the Amaterial being transferred to thecontainers. Further means is provided and is associated with this cutting means for positioning this wrapping portion in contiguo'us relation with the transferred `material and at the proper interval of time.
Still another object of the invention is to provide an automatic container lling machine having or including means for transferring material ti at intervals from a source of supply to empty containers and having means associated therewith for picking up this material from the source oi' supply and depositing the same in the empty container. In an embodiment selected to illustrate the invention such means comprises a cross-head for' transfer of the material to the container, this cross-head having suction means associated therewith for lifting the material from the source le of supply, means being further provided for breaking or releasing this suction when the transferred material is in a position above the containers, whereby the same is properly' deposited in the containers.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an automatic container filling device having means for Wrapping a quantity of terial during the transfer thereof from a source of sup ply to a container, such wrapping means includ- 25 ing suction means for properly positioning a wrapping portion of material in contiguous relation with the/material.
Still another object of the invention is toy provide a novel automatic container filling machinev 30 having a power driven conveyor adapted to be intermittently moved for positioning empty containers at intervals of time in a given position to be lled, s means being further provided and operated by the drive means for the conveyor to close the containers at the proper interval.
Still further, means is provided and operated by the drive means for the conveyor for discharging the containers when filled from the conveyor and onto suitable means for transferring the 40 same to a place where they can be packed for shipment.
Other objects, capabilities, advantages and fea.- tures are comprehended by theinvention, as will laterappear -and as are inherently possessed thereby.

Referring now more in detail to the drawings, an"embodiment selected to disclose the present invention is shown as comprising a conveying means, generally designated as 2, for conveying empty containers or'boxes 4 atintervals to a given point where the same are filled by a material transfer means, generally referred to as 6, for transferring a quantity of material, such as a plurality of pills, tablets, or the like 8, from a source of supply, generally referred to as I8.
These tablets 8 are emptied into a bin or funnel I2 secured, as by the bolts I4, to a bracket I6 connected to upstanding lugs II of a shelf or platform I9 of an elongated bracket 28 attached as by means of bolts 22 to the main frame of the machine, a second bin or container I8 being supported upon the platform I9 and directly beneath the funnel I2. The pills 8 are adapted to pass down through an opening in the container I2 and into the second container I8, this second container I8 being provided with a plurality of channels 24 formed in the base plate 28, these channels converging toward the machine and communicating with channels 28 formed in a chute 29. As clearly shown in Figure 3 of the drawings, the channels 24 in the container I8 are adapted to receive the pills or tablets 8 in an endwise direction, the channels 28 in the chute 29, however, being formed, as clearly indicated in Figures 2 and 3, with a twist 88 so as to rotate these pills through .an arc of degrees to position the same in the channels 28 on their flat sides.
An end of the container I8 is pivoted, as at 32, to the lugs I 'I and is supported at its opposite end upon a transverse eccentric rod 34 journaled in suitable bearings in a casting` 35 of the chute 29 which rests on the shelf I9, this rod having a gear 36 secured thereto on one of its ends which meshes with a pinion 38 mounted upon the drive shaft of an electric motor 48. It will be clearly understood, that as the eccentric shaft 84 is rotated by the motor 48, the container I8 is vigorously oscillated about the pivot points 32 so as to stir up and agitate the tablets 8 within the container and for positioning these tablets in the channels 24, the same being urged downwardly by this movement toward the passages 28 in the chute 29. The speed oi' rotation of the drive shaft of the motor 48 is controlled through a rheostat 42.
In the present embodiment, the material supplying means I8 is disclosed as having four channels or passages 28 in the chute 29 which communicate with an opening 44 in a casting 46 of the main frame of the device, these tablets being adapted to be urged by gravity onto a plate 48 of a material lifting means 58 (to be later more fully disclosed), the opening 44 being of such a width as to permit a series of three units of .these tablets to be positioned on the plate 48 at any given time.
The various mechanisms of the present machine, such as the rotating conveyor 2, the transfer means 6, as well as means for cutting wrapping portions of material and wrapping the tablets with this material, generally designated as 52, and various other mechanisms are driven and operated by a single drive means.y Such drive means comprise an electric motor 54 semachine casting 68 having a base 62 for sup'porting the device on any suitable foundation.- This electric motor 54 drives a belt 64 through a pulley 66, this belt passing over a pulley 68 keyed to a shaft 'I8 mounted for rotation within a housing comprising an 'upper casting 12 and lower casting 14 connected togetherby any suitable means, such as bolts 16. This upper casting I2 is connected by means of the bolts 'I8 to the upright standard 88 of the casting 68, while the lower casting 14 is secured and maintained in position through the medium of the bolts 16. Mounted upon the shaft 'I8 is a worm 84 meshing with a gear 86 connected, as by mea-ns of the bolts 88, to a sleeve 98 mounted for rotation about a hollow shaft 92 having shoulder portions 94 seating on the upper surface of a bracket 96, the lower end of this hollow shaft 92 being threaded and secured to the bracket 96 as .by means of the lock nut 98. Thebracket 96 is connected by means of the bolts |88 to the lower central portion of the standard 88 of the main casting. The rotatable sleeve 98 has its lower end restvopening in the upper casting 12. The upper end .of the sleeve |06 is formed with gear teeth ||0 meshing with the gear teeth of a gear I2 keyed to a shaft (not disclosed), suitably journaled in an enlarged circular bearing portion ||4 of the upper casting l2. Means (to be later more fully disclosed), is associated with the gear |i2 for intermittently rotating the conveyor t.
The sleeve @t is provided with a notch or cam slot itt adapted` to provide a cam surface for the travel of a roll titl mounted upon a square shaft it@ adapted toreciprocate within a bushing or sleeve iti mounted in the bracket te. A crosshead t28 is provided with an opening fitting over a small shoulder portion iid of the shaft |28 and is secured thereto by means of a nut litt threadedly engaging thesmall end |1843 of the shaft. The outer end of this cross-head itt is apertured to receive the shouldered end itt of a control rod it@ and is secured thereto by a nut i352 threadedly engaging, the rod portion itil. This control rod itil is mounted for reciprocating movement in the lower end iti-ii of the hollow` shaft t2 and entends upwardly and above the transfer means fi and has a cross-head tdt secured thereto, as by means of a bolt'itt. This cross-head it@ is for the purpose ofl controlling the operation of various mechanisms of the device and the same will be hereinafter more fully described in conjunction with' these various mechanisms.

The upper disc M2 is formed with a peripheral shelf portion itt, a plurality of spaced depressions it being provided therein and adjacent the periphery thereof. An operator standing approximately at the point A adjacent the machine places a container in eachof the depressions |58 when the same come within reach, each o'f the containers t having a cover it@ which at that time is moved .rearwardly into abutting relation with an upper or top disc o plate |54 xedly mounted on the upper end of the shaft |48.
In the present embodiment, these containers t are disclosed as being made of metal, and in order to hold `the same inl place within the depressions |`8, an electromagnet |62 is provided immediately ladjacent and 4beneath each and every depression. These electromagnetic devices are each provided with a pole |64 having a head |66 seating within a recess provided in the de- 'pression |58, this pole extending downwardly through on opening in the disc and having a nut |68 threaded onto the lower end thereof for holding the magnetic 'devices in position and in contact with the lower surface of the disc |42. 'Ihese electromagnetic devices eiectively hold each of the containers 4 in position within a depression during the entire travel of the same from a point immediately adjacent the area. marked A until discharged from the conveyor. TheA transfer means of the present device for transfer of a set of '12 tablets from the lifter plate 0 48 and for depositing lthe same in an open conf' tainer directly opposite thereto, comprises a crosshead 208 formed in the shape of a cross haying a hub 2|0 mounted upon a sleeve 2|2 which in .y turn is sndably mounted upon the upper end of the hollow shaft 92. 'Ihe cross-head 208 is prospaced apart at 90 degrees and having head portions 2l8, 2|8, 220 and 222 for picking up sets of pills or tablets and depositing the same at the proper interval of time into an open container.
This cross-head 208 hasboth movement of rotation and movement of translation in an up and down direction over the hollow sleeve 92. The reciprocating movement of translation is effected by means of 'cam pieces 224 secured to the upper end of the sleeve |06 and adapted to be continuously operated thereby when the machine ls in operation. 'I'hese cam pieces 224 are adapted to intermittently contact with a case hardened lug 228 secured to the lower surface of a crosshad lifter 228 lmounted about the hollow sleeve 92, the lower end of the sleeve 2|2 normally resting or bearing upon the upper surface of this lifter. 'Ihis lifter member 228 is provided with a bifurcated arm -230 guided by means of an upright rectangular lug 232 formed on the U- shaped channel 234 of the casting 46.
A second cam piece 234 is secured to the upper end of the sleeve |06 and extends outwardly directly beneath the lower end of a rod 236 of the material lifting means 50, this rod 236 being mounted for movement within guiding surfaces of the casting 46. The rod 236 is provided with a lug 238 engaged by the end of a coil spring 240 tending to urge the rod 236 downwardly, whereby the upper surface of the plate 48 is beneath the tablet supply channels or grooves 28 provided in the chute 29, the downward movement of the rod 236 being controlled by engagement of the lug 23s with a shelf 282 on the casting 4s.
Movement of rotation of the cross-head 208 is effected by means of-a ring gear 244 mounted on the lower part of the sleeve 2|2 which-is adapted to engage with gear teeth 246 on the intermediate disc |46 of the conveyor. The teeth of the gear 244 and teeth 246 intermesh for intermittently rotating the cross-head 208 through an arc of 90 degrees when the conveying means 2 is intermittently rotated through the mechanism/ controlled by the operation of the roll |18. The
movement of translation of this cross-head 208 in an up and down direction takes place during the interval of time that the conveyor means 2 is stationary so that there is no clashing of the teeth of the gear 244 and the teeth 246 of the conveyor means.
Upon the downward stroke of the cross-head 208, one of the heads thereof is adapted to be positioned immediately above the material lifter plate 48, while an opposite head thereof is adapted to be positioned immediately above an empty container 4 on the conveying means 2. At this time, a set of tablets is adapted to be picked up by the head immediately thereabove and a set of tablets deposited from the opposite head into the empty container directly beneath the same.
This picking up and depositing is effected through the medium of suction suitably controlled for effecting these results. Each of the heads is provided with a laterally extending duct or conduit 248, communicating with the annular passage250 between the shaft |30 and sleeve 92, the lower'end of this annular passage 250 communicating with an outlet duct 252 connected to suitable means for creating a suction therein. Each of the heads of the cross-head 208 is provided with a vertically disposed bore 253 having a bushing 254 tting therein for receiving a control push rod 256 having a recessed portion 258 in its lower end against which seats a coil spring 260 having its other end resting upon a head plate 262 provided with perforations 284 so positioned as to be centrally located relative to the tablets on the plate 48, these perforations 284 terminating in arcuate depressions 286 conforming substantially to the contour of the 4side surface of the tablets. Each of the heads of the cross-head is provided with a port 288 normally closed by the lower end of the push rod 258 when the same is directly above the plate 48 of the material lifter. At this time, the port 210 of the channel 248 is open to permit the `suction to act through the perforations 264 for drawing or picking up the tablets from the plate 48. At this particular moment, the cam piece 234 is in a'position to engage with the lower end of the rod 236 for raising a set of tablets upwardly toward the cross-head directly thereabove and for cutting off the supply of tablets moving downwardly in the channels or grooves 28. This suction is of suflicient strength to maintain these pills within the depressions 288 of the head plate 262 until such time as this head has'been intermittently rotated into a position above an empty container on the conveying means 2. It is of course understood that upon upward movement of the plate48 the cross-head 208,
because of the disengagement of cam pieces 224 with the lug 226, is in its lowermost position.
Each of the heads of the cross-head is provided with an ear 21| to which is pivotally connected a plate 212 having an aperture 214 surrounding the rod 258, this plate normally being moved into angular and binding relation with the rod 256 yby means of a coil spring 216 within a cap 218 fitting over a lug 280 screwed into the cross-head arm 2|0.
When a head of the cross-head 206 is above the plate 48, the upper cross-head |36 is moved downwardly by means of the cam roller ||8 operating in the cam slot H6 to a point where the downwardly disposed bolt 282 carried thereby engages with the plate 212 to release the rod 256, which, under the influence of the coil spring 280, moves upwardly for opening the port 210, this upward movement being controlled by the stop bolt 284 similarly carried in the cross-head |38.
Simultaneously with this downward movement of the cross-head |36 for operation of the rod 256, a bolt 286 carried in an opposite arm of the same, comes into'engaging relation with the rod 256 of the head of the cross-head directly'` above the empty container. This bolt 286 causes -a downward movement of the rod 256, where-v by the lower endofthe rod 256 closes the port 210 leading to the suction duct 250 and opens, by means of a. passage 288, the port 268, thereby breaking the suction to release the tablets for depositing the same in the container 4. The coil spring 216 immediately acts to cause 'a binding between the plate 212 and rod 256 to hold the rod 256 in this position until this head of cross-head has been moved into a position above the plate 48.
' In order to properly wrap these tablets, wrapping means is comprehended by'the present invention and includes means for severing a wrapping portion of the wrapping material and Wrapping the tablets with this wrapping portion. The wrapping material is supplied in the form of a roll-290 supported in a bracket 292 connected, as by means of bolts or the like 294, to the upper casting 12. A brake mechanism comprising an arm 29| having a block 293 adapted to contact with the roll 2 90. is pivotally suppor/ted by an arm 295 connected to the bracket 292 and has a weight 291 secured toits lower end tending to maintain the block 293 in contact with the roll 290 to provide uniform movement of the same upon the unwinding of the wrapping material. l
The free end of this wrapping material extends upwardly and between two rolls 296 and 298 mounted upon the shafts 300 and302, respectively, these shafts being suitablyA journaled in the side walls of a housing 304. These rolls are suitably driven by means of a gear 306 meshing with the gear 244 on the sleeve 2|2, this gear being mounted on a shaft 308 journaled in the housing 304 and 'provided with another gear 310 secured to the shaft and meshing with a gear 3|2 mounted upon a shaft 3|4. This shaft 3M is mounted for rotation in the housing 306 and is provided 'with a second gear 3|6 secured to an .end thereof which in turn is adapted to mesh with a drive gear 3|8 secured to an end ofthe shaft 302 and for driving the same. rlhis gear 3|8 is still further in meshing relation with another gear 320 mounted on the shaft 300 for simultaneous movement of rotation of the roll 296 with the roll 298.
Means foradjusting the bite between the rolls 296 and 298 comprises a thumb nut 311|v having a shank threaded in a plate 316 having bolts 318 securedthereto adjacent its end, these bolts 318 being adapted to pass downwardly through enlarged openings provided in a top plate 380 for the casting' 304 and engage with bushings 382 mounted in the walls of the casting 304. Coil springs 384 are interposed between the top plate 380 and these bushings 382 and about the bolts 318 for urging these bushings 382 downwardly in the openings provided inthe walls of housing 308. It will be seen that movement of the thumb screw 314 in an upward direction will decrease the distance between the plate 316 and top plate 380 thereby permitting the springs 384 to exert a force against the bushings 382 and for tightening the bite between the rolls 296 and The free end 322 of the wrapping material extends through the bite between the upper and lower feeding rolls 296 and 298 and protrudes through an opening 328 in the housing 304 and directly above a shelf portion 326. The housing 304 is formed with a downwardly extending ledge portion 328 above the opening 320 and has secured thereto a block 330 as by means of the bolt 332, this bolt 332 extending through an elongated opening or slot 333 in the block 330, whereby the block may be moved or adjusted.
This block 330 is tightened by means of set screws 336 adapted to have their ends in abutting relation with the downwardly extending ledge portion 328, this block 330 having a knife element 338 secured along the lower edge thereof. The platform or shelf 326 of the casting has a depression 340 formed therein adapted to receive a cross piece 342 of a movable element 344 pivoted as by means of a shaft 346 to an ear or lug 348 integral with the shelf 326. The cross member 342 is made integral with sector portions 350.0f the movable element 344 and has a. knife element 352 secured to its upper surface for cooperation with the knife element 338 -for cutting or severing a wrapping portion from the free end 322 ofthe wrapping material.
The movable element 344 is raised and lowered by means of a vertical rod 354 controlled at the proper interval of time by a bolt 356, ex-
tending downwardly from an outwardly extending arm 350 of the upper cross-head |36. This rod 354 is provided with gear teeth 360 meshing with gear teeth 362 on one end of a rod 364 jour-- naled in the housing 304. The teeth 362 are of such a length as to have a portion thereof mesh ing with teeth provided on one of the sectors 350 on one side of the shelf 326, while another portion at the other end of the shaft 364 is provided with teeth 366 engaging the teeth of another sector portion positioned on the other side of the shelf 326.
When a head of the cross-head 208 has picked up a set of tablets from the plate 48 and has been rotated into a position adjacent the Wrapping means 52, these tablets are in a position relative to the free end 322 of the wrapping material, as clearly shown in Figure 13 of the drawings. At this particular instant of time the crosshead |36 moves downwardly whereby the bolt 356 contacts with the rod 354 to cause an upward movement of the sectors 350 and for rais. ing the cross member 342, whereby the knife element 352 cooperates with the knife element 338 to severa wrapping portion from the roll of wrapping material. This upward movement of the cross member 342 raises this wrapping portion of material up into contiguous relation with the set of pills carried by this cross-head and the same is maintained. in that position by the suction created in the head of the cross-head.
As clearly shown in Figure 11 of the drawings, a part of this wrapping portion is moved upwardly by the cross member 342 into a. position sufficiently close to a port 368 provided in the outer part of each of the heads of the cross-head, whereby the outer end of this wrapping portion is drawn into a substantially vertical position. This outer part of the wrapping portion of material is started in its upward movement by means of a latch member 310 pivoted to the housing 304 and supported thereby adjacent and above the knife element 352. Upon upward movement of this knife element 352 the same contacts with the latch member 310 and to raise the same into a positionas shown in dotted lines in Figure l2 of the drawings. Movement of thisflatch member 310 is controlled by a bracket 312 projecting above and inwardly of the point of pivotal support of the same.4
The movable member 344 is returned into-a. position wherein the cross member 342 is positioned in the s'lot or groove 340 under the action of a coil spring 36| interposed between a. plate 363 connected to the housing and the end of the rod 354. This coil spring 36| not only returns the movable member 344 into its lowered position, but also returns the rod 354 into its uppermost position for engagement with the bolt 356 upon the next successive downward movement of the cross head |36 for severing a wrapping portion of material for the next successive set oftablets carried by the adjacent head of the cross-head 208.
The invention further contemplates the idea of providing suitable mechanism adapted to deposit or insert a filler into the empty containers at the proper interval this ller material serving a dual purpose, namely, to ll -the space between the tablets and the walls of the container when the same has been filled with material, and to serve as an instruction sheet for the consumer asY to the proper use of the material or tablets packed within the container.' These fillers are shown as comprising folded pieces of paper 386,
packed together adjacent one another in an elongated U-shaped channel 388 `supported upon blocks or supports 390, this channel being secured by any suitable means to the top disc mem- 'ber |54 in such a positior that its inner open end is adjacent and directly above the cover |60 of a container 4. directly opposite the platform 48 of the material 'supply means. These fillers are normally urged toward this inner open end by means of a follower block 392 having trunnions 894 operating and movable in slots 396 provided in the side walls of the U-shaped channel 388. Each of the trunnions 394 is provided with an aperture or opening through which a cord 398 passes and which is knotted for anchoring the same thereto. This cord 398 passes over a pulley 400 at the inner open end of the channel 388 and extends rearwardly over another pulley 402 at the outer open end of the channel and downwardly and has a weight 404 connected to the end thereof. These weights 404 tend to urge the follower block 392 inwardly so as to maintain the llers 386 in close relation whereby each of the fillers is in aposition to be positively fed or deposited into the containers.
At the interval of time during the downward movement of the cross-head 36 when the bolt 286 contacts with a rod 256 for breaking the suction of a head of the cross-head 208 directly above an empty container, the blade -406 secured to a cross member 408 connected to a bolt 4|0 on the cross head |36, likewise moves downwardly and the curvedor flanged end 4|2 thereof engages with a filler which has been forced downwardly under the action of a prong 4|3, as clearly shown in Figure 6 of the drawings, to deposit the same in the cover |60 of the container being filled with a series of tablets. This blade 406 further functions to provide an abutment for holding the fillers 386 within the channel 388. A strap or retaining member 4|4 is secured to the upper edges of the channel 388 and adjacent the inner open, endthereof for preventing upward movement of the fillers 386. During the up and down movement of translation of the cross-head |36, the same is guided by guide rods 420 connected in any suitable means to the cross member 408 and movable within openings provided in the guide blocks 422 secured as by means of the bolts 424 to the top disc member |54.
After a container has been supplied with a filler, as described above, the same is intermittently moved on the rotating conveyor 2 in a direction toward the discharge plate |96. During this movement toward the discharge plate |96, the arm |88 associated therewith is moved in the cam slot |84 so that its outer end moves against the cover |60 to close the same. At the instant of time after this cover |60 has been moved into a closed position, a bolt 426 connected to an arm 428 of the cross-head |36 moves downwardly therewith to engage the top |60 and to cause an engagement of snaps 430 provided on both the bottom and top of each of the containers. Upon further outward movement of the rod |88, the closed and filled container is discharged upon -the discharge plate |96 and is then conveyed along the endless beltl |98 to a place where the same is packed for shipment.
While I have herein described and upon the drawings shown an illustrated embodiment of the invention,l it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto but may comprehend other constructions, arrangements of parts,
details and features without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus disclosed the invention, I claim:
1. An automatic container filling machine, comprising means for conveying an open container to a given point to be` filled, means for supplying material for said container, means for picking up said material, means for bringing a wrapping portion into associationwith said material, and means for depositing said material with a wrapping portion in association therewith in said container. i l

An automatic container filling machine, comprising means for conveying an open container to a given point to be filled, means for supplying material for said container, means for picking up said material, means for bringing a wrapping portion into association with said material, means for depositing said material with a wrapping portion in association therewith in said container, and means for closing said container.
3. An automatic container filling madiine, comprising means for conveying an open container to a given point to be lled, means for supplying material for said container, means for placing a wrapping portion in position to be transferred into association with said material, means for transferring said portion into association with said material, means for depositing said material with said wrapping portion in said container, and means for depositing a loose filler in said container and for moving the same into a position imediately above said material to prevent damage of said material when packed.
4. An automatic container filling machine, comprising means for conveying an open container having a hinged cover to a given point to be filled, means for supplying material for said container, means for placing a wrapping portion in position to be transferred into association with said material, means for transferring said portion into association with said material, means for depositing said material with said wrapping portion in said container, means for depositing -a loose filler in said container adjacent said cover to prevent damage of said material when packed, and means for closing the cover of said container and to move said loose filler into a position immediately above said material.
5. An automatic container filling machine, comprising means for conveying an open container having a hinged cover to a given point to be filled, means for placing a wrapping portion in4 position to be transferred into association with a quantity ofmaterial, means for transferring said portion into association with said material, means forI depositing said material with said wrapping portion in said container, means for depositing a loose filler in said container adjacent said cover to prevent damage of said material when packed, and means for closing said container and to move said loose filler into a position immediately above said material.
6. An automatic container fllling machine, comprising means for conveying an open container having a hinged cover to a given point to be'. filled, means for depositing material with a wrapping portion associated therewith in said container, means for depositing a loose filler in said container adjacent said cover to prevent damage of said material when packed, and means for closing said container and to move said loose ller into. a position immediately above said ma '1. An automatic container filling machine, comprising means for conveying an open container to a given point to-be filled, means for supplying material for said container, means for picking up said material, means'for bringing a wrapping portion into association with said material, means for depositing said material with its associated wrapping portion in said container, means for depositing a ller in said container to prevent damage to said material when packed, means for closing saidcontainer, and means for conveying said-closed container to a point for packing.

An automatic container filling machine, comprising means for conveying an open container to a. given point to be lled, means for supplying material for said container, uid means for picking up said material, means for bringing a wrapping portion into association with said material, means for depositing said material with its associated wrapping portion in said container, and means for closing said container.

comprising means for conveying open containers at intervals to a given point to be iilled, means for supplying material for said containers, means for picking up a quantity of'material from said supply, means for simultaneously bringing a wrapping portion into association with a previously picked up quantity of material, and means for simultaneously depositing a previously picked up quantity of material in a container.

An automatic container filling machine, comprising means for conveying open containers at intervals to a'f; iven point to be filled, means for supplying ma rial for said containers, means for transferrlnga quantity of said material to a container, said means including suction means for picking up said quantity of material from said supply, means for breaking said suction for depositing said material in a container, and means for bringing a wrapping portion into association with said material during said transfer.

An automatic container filling machine, comprising means for conveying open containers at intervals to a given point to be filled, means for supplying material for said containers, means for transferring a quantity of said material to a container, for picking up said quantity of material from said supply, means for breaking said suction for depositing said material in a container, and means for bringing a wrapping portion into association with said material during said transfer, said means including said suction for positioning the wrapping material.

An automatic container lling machine, comprising means for conveying open containers at intervals to a given point to be filled, means for supplying material forL said containers, means for transferring a quantity of said material to a container, said means including suction means for picking up said quantity of material from said supply, means for breaking said suction for depositing said material in a container, means for supplying a wrapper for said material and during said transfer, and means for picking up lsaid wrapper into contiguous relation with said material, said last mentioned means including said suction.

comprising means for conveying open containers at intervals to a given point to be i-llled, means for supplying material for said containers, means for transferring a quantity of said material to a container, said means including suction means for picking up said quantity of material from said supply, means for breaking said suction for depositing said material in a container, means for supporting wrapping material, means -for feeding said wrapping material adjacent said picked up material, means for severing a wrap- Ping portion, and means for picking up said wrapping portion into contiguous relation with said material, said last mentioned means including said suction.

An automatic container lling machine, comprising means for conveying open containers at intervals to a given point to be filled, means for'supplying materialior said`containers, an intermittent reciprocating and rotating crosshead for transfer of said material from said supply to a container, suction means cooperating with said cross-head for picking a quantity of material up from said supply, means for pmemg said means including suction means deposit of said material together with said wrapping portion in a container.

In an automatic container filling machine, the combination of means for conveying open containers to a givenl point to be illled, means for supplying material for said containers, said supply means including reciprocating means for holding unit quantities of material from said supply, reciprocating means for carrying said unit quantities of material thereon in spaced relation, and means associated therewith for simultaneously bringing a quantity of material from said supply-into and holding the same in association with said reciprocating means and depositing a quantity of material previously brought into association with and held by said reciprocating means by a preceding reciprocation of said means in a container, the movement of said ilrst-named reciprocating means being toward said second-named reciprocating means during transfer of said unit quantities of material thereto.

In an automatic container filling machine, the combination of means for conveying open containers to a given point 'to be iilled, means for supplying material for said containers, reciprocating means having suction means associated therewith for 'carrying given quantities of material thereon in spaced relation, said means having intermittent rotary movement between the reciprocations, and means for controlling said suction means whereby said reciproof material thereon in spaced relation, meansv for supplying wrapping portions for said quantities of material, means operable when said reciprocating lmeans is in a certain position for bringing a quantity of material from said supply into and holding the same in association with said reciprocating means, means simultaneously operable for bringing a wrapping portion into association with another quantity of material brought into association with and carried by said reciprocating means by a preceding reciprocation of said means, andmeans simultaneously operable for depositing another quantity of material with' its associated wrapping portion into a container, said last-named material having been brought into, association therewith by a reciprocation of said means preceding said last-named reciprocation.

In an automatic container filling machine, the combination of means for conveying open containers to a given point to'be filled, means for supplying material for said containers, reciprocating means having suction means associated therewith for carrying given quantities of Vwith said reciprocating means, means for bringing a wrapping portion into association with another quantity of material carried by said reciprocating means, and means for depositing .with said' cross-head, a second cross-head-associated with said rst cross-head for controlling said handling means, and means for reciprocating said second cross-head.

In an automatic container lling machine, the combination of a conveyor member having a plurality lof container receiving portions adjacent the periphery thereof adapted to receive containers having a hinged cover, means on said member for holding said covers in a position to be moved into closed position, a plurality of radially disposed and movable arms associated with said member each terminating adjacent a cover for said container, a cam groove disposed adjacent the other end of said arms, and means connected to said arms and operable in said cam groove for moving said arms.

In an automatic container filling machine, the combination of a xed sleeve having a duct, a cross-head movably mounted on said sleeve and having suction heads disposed in spaced relation, ducts leading from the duct in said sleeve and communicating with said suction heads, a member disposed in the duct of said sleeve, said member having -an end movably journalled in said sleeve and its other end `movably journalled in said cross-head, and a second cross-head mounted on said last-named end in association with said first-named cross-head.

comprising means for conveying open containers at intervals to a given point to be filled, means for supplying material for said containers, an intermittent reciprocating and rotating crosshead for transfer of said material from said supply to a container, a source of suction cooperating with said cross-head for picking up a quantity of material from said supply and depositing the same in a container, a second reciprocating head for transfer of said material from said supply to a container, a source of suction cooperating with said cross-head for picking up a quantity of material from said supply and depositing` the same in a container, a second reciprocating ers at intervals to av given point to be filled, means for supplying material for said containers, said means including a movable platform, and means for transferring a quantity of material from said supply to said containers, said means including cross-head for control of said suction, meanslfor supplying wrapping material adjacent said @ma-.- terial during said transfer, means controlled by said second cross-head for severing a wrapping portion for saidmaterial, means for .bringing said wrapping portion into association' with said material, means associated with said second cross-head for depositing a filler in said container to prevent damage of said-material when packed, and means associated with said conveying means for closing said container.

An automatic container filling machine, comprising means for conveying open containers at intervals to a given point to be -1led, means for supplyinglmaterial for said containers, said means including a platform, and. means for transferring a quantity of material from said supply to said containers, said means including 1 a cross-head, drive means for said cross-head,
and means for intermittently rotating said conveying means and cross-head and reciprocating said cross-head for said transfer, said means including meansfor reciprocating said platform in opposite relation to the reciprocation of said cross-head.

An automatic container lling machine, comprising means for conveying open containers at intervals to a given point to be lled, means for supplying material for said containers, said means including a movable platform, and means for transferring a quantity of material from said supply to said containers, said means including a cross-head, drive means for said cross-head, means for intermittently reciprocating and rotating said cross-head for said transfer, said means including cam means for effecting said reciprocation, and means associated with said cam means for controlling the movement of the platform of said supply means.

In an automatic container filling machine, the combination of a drive member operated continuously in a single direction, a cross-head having a member associated with `said drive member and rotated only in the direction of movementof said drive member, means associated with said members for intermittently reciprocating said cross-head, a second cross-head associated with said first cross-head, and means operated by said drive member for reciprocating said second cross-head alternately with said rstnamed cross-head.
