Description

G. F. KOTRBATY PARTITION WALL .ASSEMBLY .lune 18, 1935.

Original Filed Aug. 5 1930 yto Patented June 18, 1935 means PATENT .OFFICE 2,005,145 PARTITION ASSEMBLY Kotrbaty,

Laurelton,

N. Y., assignor to Fer-O-Con Corporation, New York, N. Y., a corporation of Delaware Refiled for abandoned application Serial No.

47 3,249, August 30. This application 5, 9 December 9, 1933, Serial No. 701,709

1 Claim. (Cl. 72115).

This invention relates to improvements in building construction units, and more particularly to an improved grid member having cliplocking devices incorporated therein.

This application is a substitute for abandoned application Serial No. 473,249, iiled Aug. 5, 1930.

In my prior U. S. Patent No. 1,877,898 of September 20, 1932, for Improved construction unit and system, there4 is disclosed a grid construction in which successive grids are juxtaposed and held in operating relationship by means of suitable congured key members. Where structural strength is of importance such key mem-v in the above identified application. However, in work where the keys and associated key ways are not required to support any loads, as in the case of partition walls and other like constructions, the

' h while structurally eiiicient, are somewhat costly for the purposes to which they are applied.

It is an object of this invention to provide an improved construction grid retaining system. Itis another object of this invention to proan improved system in? which the respective grids are provided with mutually interlocking members.

These and other desirable objects and advantages of the present invention will be described specification and illuspreferred emof illustration be incorporate tion and emb specific devices, it is not intended to be limited to the one here shown except as such limitations are clearly imposed by the appended claim.

In the drawing like numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views, of which,

Fig. 1 is a horizontal section of a construction unit incorporating the novel features of the present invention;

Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a key clip member;

Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing a key clip receiving slot; and

Fig. 4 is a vertical section showing the method oi locking a pair oi juxtaposed. units.

Referring now to the drawing, in Fig. 1 a building construction unit o! t type disclosed in my prior application Serial No. and back wall portions associated end members 3 and 4 clipped or otherwise secured to the .wail

members by means of crimps 5 and 6 in the end members. While the members are shown as crimped together, it will, of course, be underthey may be welded, brazed,or sol: dered together in any well-known manner.

The end 3 and l comprise central channel sections 1 and 8, together with channel portions 9 and ill on either side, which channel portions are prolonged to form the crimping sections 5 and 6 above referred to. The members l0 9 and I0 are substantially rectangular 1n cross 'section and when a pair of 'd members are abutted form a channel H adapted to receive iurring strip l2 of wood or any other suitable material. The sections 1 and 8 of the members lli 3 and 4 are provided respectively'swith clip key receiving slots It both formed if depunched out slots, and the members 8 may have 20 clip keys secured thereto in any well-known manner, as by welding, soldering, or brazing, instead o having them formed directly from the structure itself.

As indicated more particularly in Figs'. 2 and g5 4, the clip keys il comprise tongue-like members struck out from the body tions, andI so congured as to preferably present a curved body portion Ma with a depending tongue portion Mb, the latter being bent inward- 30 ly towards the outwardly iiaring member lip engage the lip I3a. of the in gripping relation against the inner section 3 of an adjoiningl grid member, as par- 35 ti'cularly noted in Fig. 4.

Referring more part cularly to Figs. 3 and 4. it will be noted thatA the clip key receiving slot comprises a struck out portion |3b, lip 13a adapted Mb of the clip into close abutment to member 3, the two said members being mutually interlocked by means of the clip keys Il coacting with the sections of certain of the grids. rll'he members 13b in 45 coaction with the sections Hc and Hb of members will serve to guide the same into position as the interengaging tongues or clip members are adapted to receive and guide each other into locking position whereby to hold the stud or stanchion section 8 of abutted self-supporting open ended grid members or building construction units together in' locked position.

While the clip keys and associated slots have been illustrated as being severally formed on separate end sections of the construction units, excessive costs due to skilled labor are done it will, ot course, be appreciated that any given away with.

end section' may be provided with both clip It`wil1 now be appreciated that there has key members and key receiving slots, such porbeen provided an improved method and means tions being suitably alternated to permit the for assembling partition walls and other such manner. Such a construction might be parassociated slots formed'in respectively abutting ticularly. desirable where added strength is end sections o1' improved building units' of the required. type generally set forth and described in my bers whereby to lock abutted units together, the 20 relatively small amount of material required for mg member having a locking tongue passing the construction considerable savings in matethrough the said slot and engaged .by the said 25 rial only are insured, as the members can be guiding t0nguereadily assembled by unskilled labor, and the f GUY F.
