Abstract

The cabinet named the “SOLUTION” was created to solve a problem that exists in small houses and apartments with small kitchens. A study of government and census records revealed that there are more than 19 million units that would benefit by owning the “SOLUTION”. Small kitchens have small cabinets for canned goods, but if we can find wall space in a hallway or a stairwell the “SOLUTION” will fit when a 10 in. cabinet would extend into the space and prevent passage. The cabinet is only 4 in. deep, 24 in.high ×48 in. wide, with enough space for 60 cans. The front is closed by two sliding panels of perforated pressed wood. I have often said: “To own it is to love it”, because when you slide the panel to show the canned goods, you are delighted to see each can, one up. none hidden, And you will know when to re-stock.

Description

  • It is a wall cabinet, extending only 4″ out from the wall, consisting of a frame of pine boards, finished size, 24 in. Vertical×48 in wide.
  • The inside will have three shelves added, measuring on the inside from the top down, spaced exactly 4 9/16 in. ,bottom space about 6I/2″
  • The three shelves will be cut from “stock” size 1×3 pine boards, [their actual measurement will be ¾ in by 2½ in.] as will all sizes of boards bought in a lumber yard.
  • The side boards for the frame are cut from 1″×4″ and should be 22½ in. In length, and the top and bottom boards measure exactly 4¾ in wide by 48 in long, with the two grooves for the sliding panels; see fill size section on the shop drawing.
  • The top and bottom boards are nailed to top and bottom ends of the side boards making the frame 24 in×48 in, and all the shelves and the frame are flush to the back, and now nail the I/8 in pressed wood panel to the back of the frame and shelves with 1¼ in. nails and mark where the nails go so none will split out.
  • Set the nails a little below the surface, cover the nail holes with putty, and when dry, sand it smooth. Sandpaper any rough spots on the cabinet, and paint it.
  • Use semi-gloss enamel and paint the entire cabinet inside and outside with two coats. Do not paint the back.

Claims (3)

1. The cabinet extends only four inches from the wall, allowing it to be placed in a narrow hallway or stairwell without restricting passage.
2. The capacity is sixty cans of the most common sizes.
3. When the sliding door is opened, all the cans are seen “one up”, none hidden which provides a two-fold advantage, instant selection, and a reminder to enter that item on the shopping list if it the last can.
