Typically, several computer servers are spaced vertically and mounted in each rack structure. To facilitate access to the individual servers for maintenance or upgrades, each server is typically mounted on a pair of slide assemblies to allow the server to slide into and out of the rack structure.
- Typical slide assemblies comprise two or more telescoping slide segments.
- An outer or stationary slide segment is mounted to a frame of the rack structure, and an inner or load-carrying slide segment is mounted to the server.
- the stationary slide segment is usually C-shaped and defines a channel in which the inner slide segment is slidable to extend or retract the slide assembly.

Abstract
A slide assembly including at least a first slide segment and a second slide segment. A bearing assembly is provided between the segments to facilitate sliding movement therebetween. A split lock arm attached to the first slide segment includes a first arm and a second arm. The first arm has a notch, and the second arm has a notch and an angled portion. The notches receive and lock a stop of the second slide segment when the second slide segment is moved to a fully extended state relative to the first slide segment. The second slide segment is releasable from the fully extended state by actuating a spring-biased release member such that the release member engages the angled portion of the second arm. The release member is configured to bias the second arm such that the notch is moved out of alignment with the stop. Accordingly, retraction of the second slide within the first slide is permitted. Simultaneously, the notch on the first arm remains in alignment with the stop and prevents unintentional removal of the second slide segment from the first slide segment.

- This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 60/525,620, filed Nov. 26, 2003 and U.S. Provisional Patent Application, Ser. No. 60/480,664, filed Jun. 23, 2003, the entire contents of which is hereby expressly incorporated by reference herein and made a part of this specification.
- 1. Field of the Invention
- The present invention relates to slide assemblies and, more particularly, to a front-release lock arrangement for a slide assembly.
- 2. Description of the Related Art
- Computer servers for computer systems are often mounted in rack structures for convenience and to conserve floor space. Typically, several computer servers are spaced vertically and mounted in each rack structure. To facilitate access to the individual servers for maintenance or upgrades, each server is typically mounted on a pair of slide assemblies to allow the server to slide into and out of the rack structure.
- Typical slide assemblies comprise two or more telescoping slide segments. An outer or stationary slide segment is mounted to a frame of the rack structure, and an inner or load-carrying slide segment is mounted to the server. The stationary slide segment is usually C-shaped and defines a channel in which the inner slide segment is slidable to extend or retract the slide assembly. A ball-bearing assembly may be positioned within the channel, between the inner and outer slide segments, to facilitate sliding movement of the inner slide segment with respect to the outer slide segment. In other arrangements, direct contact between the outer slide segment and the inner slide segment may occur, which is often referred to as a solid-bearing slide assembly.
- Many slide assemblies additionally include an intermediate slide segment that interconnects the stationary slide segment and the load-carrying slide segment and allows a length of extension greater than the length of any individual segment, thus allowing a rack-mounted server to extend beyond the confines of the rack structure for increased access. Many slide assemblies further contain a lock-out mechanism to maintain the position of the server computer once the slide assembly is fully extended. The lock-out feature conveniently allows the slide assembly to remain securely extended while performing work on the computer.
- One aspect of a preferred embodiment involves a slide assembly comprising a stationary, outer slide segment, an intermediate slide segment, and inner slide segment. Preferably, a bearing assembly is provided between the segments to reduce friction therebetween. A split lock arm is attached to the inner slide segment and includes a first arm and a second arm. The first arm defines a first notch, and the second arm defines a second notch and an angled portion. Preferably, the first and second notches cooperate to receive an engagement surface of the intermediate slide segment when the inner slide segment is moved to a fully extended state relative to the intermediate slide segment. In one preferred embodiment, the inner slide segment is releasable from the fully extended state by actuating a release member to disengage the second arm from the engagement surface and permit the inner slide segment to be retracted relative to the intermediate slide segment. In one arrangement, the release member comprises an elongated member adapted to contact the angled portion of the second arm and bias the second arm away from the intermediate slide member to disengage the second notch from the engagement surface. While the inner slide segment may be retracted into the intermediate slide segment upon disengagement of the second arm from the engagement surface, the first notch on the first arm prevents removal of the inner slide segment from the intermediate slide segment. Accordingly, inadvertent removal of the inner slide segment from the slide assembly is avoided.
- In another embodiment, a slide assembly comprises a first slide segment and a second slide segment. The first slide segment includes an upper portion, a lower portion, and a web extending between the upper portion and the lower portion. The second slide segment includes an upper portion, a lower portion, and a web extending between the upper portion and the lower portion. The second slide segment is telescopingly engaged with the first slide segment. A slide lock arrangement is movable in a transverse direction relative to the web of the first slide segment between a locked position, wherein the first slide segment is secured in a substantially fixed position with respect to the second slide segment, and an unlocked position, wherein the first slide segment is movable relative to the second slide segment. The slide assembly further comprises a slide lock release comprising a release body and a biasing arrangement. The release body is movable along a longitudinal axis of the first slide segment, in response to a force applied in a first direction, to contact and move the slide lock arrangement in the transverse direction to the unlocked position. The biasing arrangement is configured to move the release body in a second direction, upon removal of the force, to allow the slide lock arrangement to move from the unlocked position, toward the locked position. The biasing arrangement includes a cam surface defined by one of the first slide segment and the release body and an arm supported by the other of the first slide segment and the release body. The arm includes a cam follower and is biased to move along the cam surface to move the release body in a second direction.
- In another embodiment, a slide assembly comprises a first slide segment having a forward end and a rearward end, and a second slide segment having a forward end and a rearward end. The second slide segment is telescopingly engaged with the first slide segment. A slide lock arrangement is movable between a locked position, wherein the first slide segment is secured in a substantially fixed position with respect to the second slide segment, and an unlocked position, wherein the first slide segment is movable relative to the second slide segment. The slide assembly further comprises a slide lock release comprising a release body and a biasing arrangement. The release body is movable relative to the first segment between a first position, wherein the slide lock arrangement is permitted to move to the locked position, and a second position, wherein the slide lock arrangement is moved to the unlocked position. The biasing arrangement is configured to bias the release body toward the first position. The release body is positioned toward the forward end of the first segment relative to the slide lock arrangement, and a rearward-most end of the release body is spaced from a forward-most end of the slide lock arrangement in the first position of the release body. The first slide segment is moveable relative to the second slide segment in only one direction in the unlocked position of the slide lock arrangement.
- In another embodiment, a slide assembly comprises at least one slide segment including an upper portion, a lower portion and a web extending between the upper portion and the lower portion, and an actuator comprising an elongate, planar body configured to be supported between the upper and lower portions of the slide segment and moveable along a longitudinal axis of the slide segment, an arm extending from the body and biased in a first direction. The arm includes a cam follower configured to engage a cam surface of the slide segment to move the actuator relative to the slide segment in response to the biasing of the arm.

- A preferred embodiment of a slide assembly is illustrated in
FIG. 1 and is designated generally by thereference numeral 12. Preferably, except as disclosed herein, theslide assembly 12 is substantially similar to the slide assemblies taught in U.S. patent application Ser. No. 10/254,826, entitled FRONT RELEASE FOR SLIDE ASSEMBLY, filed on Sep. 25, 2002, and U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 60/480,664, entitled SPLIT LOCK ARM FOR THREE-PIECE SLIDE ASSEMBLY, filed Jun. 23, 2003. The above-mentioned patent application and provisional patent application are hereby incorporated by reference in their entirety herein and made a part of this specification. - II. Preferred Embodiment of a Slide Assembly
- With reference to
FIG. 1 , preferably, theslide assembly 12 comprises a first orinner slide segment 16, a second orintermediate slide segment 18, and a third orouter slide segment 20. Theinner slide segment 16 generally is adapted for mounting to a chassis, drawer, or other load, such as a server computer, for example. Theouter slide segment 20 generally is adapted for mounting to a stationary structure, such as, by way of example, an outer case, cabinet, or rack structure. -
FIG. 2 illustrates an exemplary use environment wherein aserver computer 10 is supported by a pair ofslide assemblies 12. In the illustrated embodiment, eachserver computer 10 is supported in theserver rack 14 by a pair ofslide assemblies 12, one on either side of theserver computer 10, to allow the server computer to slide in and out of the server rack structure. In another embodiment, however, theserver computer 10 may be supported by oneslide assembly 12, centered below theserver computer 10, to allow the server computer to slide in an out of the server rack structure. Thus, theslide assembly 12 may be mounted in either a vertical orientation, as described herein, or a horizontal or other non-vertical orientation. - The three-segment structure of the
slide assembly 12 permits theserver computer 10 to be extended beyond the confines of theserver rack 14 and is particularly helpful in providing a secure position in which to perform maintenance on theserver computer 10. It is to be noted, however, that theslide assembly 12 described herein is not adaptable solely to the operating environment depicted inFIG. 2 . Additional applications and environments will be readily apparent to those of skill in the art including the support of various types of loads, varying mounting locations, such as opposing sides, undermount, or above mounted slide assemblies, and the like. Furthermore, the present split lock arm may be adapted for use in connection with two-segment slide assembly or, alternatively, a slide assembly having more than three segments. -
FIGS. 3A-3C illustrate one embodiment of a sequencing arrangement for the extension of theslide assembly 12. As illustrated schematically inFIGS. 3A and 3B , preferably, theintermediate slide segment 18 and theinner slide segment 16 extend from theouter slide segment 20 as a unit until theintermediate slide segment 18 reaches substantially full extension. Only once theintermediate slide segment 18 reaches a substantially fully extended state relative to theouter slide segment 20 is theinner slide segment 16 permitted to extend with respect to theintermediate slide segment 18.FIG. 3C schematically illustrates theinner slide segment 16 in a fully extended state relative to theintermediate slide segment 18 and theouter slide segment 20. -
FIG. 4 is a cross-sectional view of theslide assembly 12 ofFIG. 1 , taken along line 4-4 ofFIG. 1 . With reference toFIGS. 1 and 4 , preferably, theouter slide segment 20 has a generally C-shaped cross-section and comprises anupper wall 24, alower wall 26, and aplanar side wall 28 extending between the upper andlower walls lower walls arcuate bearing surface 32. The bearing surfaces 32 generally face inward toward a central longitudinal axis of theslide assembly 12. Alongitudinal channel 36 is defined by the bearing surfaces 32 and a planar inner surface of theside wall 28. - The
intermediate slide segment 18 preferably also has a generally C-shaped cross-section and comprises anupper wall 40, alower wall 42, and aside wall 44 extending between the upper andlower walls lower walls intermediate slide segment 18 define an arcuateinner bearing surface 46 and an arcuate outer bearingsurface 48. The inner bearing surfaces 46 face toward, and the outer bearing surfaces 48 face away from, the central longitudinal axis of theslide assembly 12. Alongitudinal channel 56 is defined by the inner bearing surfaces 46 and an inner surface of theside wall 44. - Like the
outer slide segment 20 and theintermediate slide segment 18, theinner slide segment 16 preferably also has a generally C-shaped cross-section and comprises anupper wall 60, alower wall 62, and aside wall 64 extending between the upper andlower walls lower walls arcuate bearing surface 68. The bearing surfaces 68 of theinner slide segment 16 face outward, or away from the central longitudinal axis of theslide assembly 12. - The
intermediate slide segment 18 is positioned in thechannel 36 of theouter slide segment 20 so that the bearing surfaces 32 of theouter slide segment 20 are located adjacent to the outer bearing surfaces 48 of theintermediate slide segment 18. A bearingassembly 74 is positioned between each bearingsurface 32 of theouter slide segment 20 and the adjacent to theouter bearing surface 48 of theintermediate slide segment 18. In the illustrated embodiment, each bearingassembly 74 comprises a thin, elongated, generallyplanar bearing spacer 76 and a number ofspherical ball bearings 78. Theball bearings 78 are retained by the bearingspacer 76 in spaced-apart openings formed along the length of the bearingspacer 76. This is an example of one type of preferred bearing spacer, although bearing spacers having alternative configurations are contemplated. Theball bearings 78 roll against the bearing surfaces 32, 48 to facilitate longitudinal sliding movement of theintermediate slide segment 18 with respect to theouter slide segment 20. As will be appreciated, thebearings 78 are retained in the openings of thespacer 76 by the bearing surfaces 32, 48. - Referring still to
FIGS. 1 and 4 , theinner slide segment 16 is positioned in thechannel 56 of theintermediate slide segment 18 so that the bearing surfaces 68 of theinner slide segment 16 are located adjacent to the inner bearing surfaces 46 of theintermediate slide segment 18. A bearingassembly 80 is positioned in thechannel 56 between theinner slide segment 16 and theintermediate slide segment 18 to facilitate longitudinal sliding movement of theinner slide segment 16 with respect to theintermediate slide segment 18. In the illustrated embodiment, the bearingassembly 80 comprises a bearingretainer 84 and a number ofspherical ball bearings 86. - The bearing surfaces 32 of the
outer slide segment 20, the inner and outer bearing surfaces 46, 48 of theintermediate slide segment 18, and the bearing surfaces 68 of theinner slide segment 16 desirably are concave. Such an arrangement prevents lateral separation of theintermediate slide segment 18 from theouter slide segment 20, and of theinner slide segment 16 from theintermediate slide segment 18. -
FIG. 5 is a perspective view of a portion of theintermediate slide segment 18 with the bearingassembly 80 positioned in thechannel 56 and theinner slide segment 16 removed for the purpose of clarity. In the illustrated embodiment, the bearingretainer 84 comprises anupper retainer portion 92, alower retainer portion 94, and aside portion 96 interconnecting the upper andlower retainer portions retainer 84 is seated in thechannel 56 so that the upper andlower retainer portions side portion 96 is located adjacent to the inner surface of theside wall 44. - A
transverse ridge 98 extends between the upper andlower retainer portions retainer 84. Desirably, thetransverse ridge 98 is defined by a surface of theside portion 96 of the bearingretainer 84 that faces theintermediate slide segment 18 and is offset toward theintermediate slide segment 18 relative to the remainder of theside portion 96. Theridge 98 may be an indented section of theside portion 96 or may comprise a thickened section of theside portion 96. Theridge 98 permits the bearingassembly 80 to be secured in a desired position relative to theintermediate slide segment 18, as is described in greater detail below. Alternative arrangements may be used in the place of the above-describedridge 98, as will be apparent to one of skill in the art upon review of the function of theridge 98 described in greater detail below. - Preferably, each of the upper and
lower retainer portions tabs 97 that extend generally perpendicularly to theside portion 96 of the bearingretainer 84. Eachtab 97 has acircular opening 100 provided therein to accommodate one of theball bearings 86. The diameter of theopenings 100 preferably is less than the diameter of theball bearings 86 to trap theball bearings 86 between thetabs 97 and the inner bearing surfaces 46 of theintermediate slide segment 18. The bearingassembly 80 desirably is movable along the length of thechannel 56 of theintermediate slide segment 18. This allows theball bearings 86 to roll along the inner bearing surfaces 46 of theintermediate slide segment 18 as theinner slide segment 16 is moved within thechannel 56. - III. Preferred Embodiment of a Split Lock Arm
-
FIGS. 6 and 7 illustrate theinner slide segment 16 of theslide assembly 12, which supports a controller, or splitlock arm 170. As shown, thesplit lock arm 170 comprises a thin, planar steel strip that is attached at afirst end 172 to the inner surface of theside wall 64 of theinner slide segment 16. Thefirst end 172 of thesplit lock arm 170 preferably forms a base of thesplit lock arm 170 and is attached to theside wall 64 by a pair oftabs 163. Preferably, thetabs 163 are monolithically formed from theside wall 64 of theinner slide segment 16 and extend through a pair of openings 165 in thefirst end 172 of thelock arm 170. The ends of thetabs 163 are deformed into an enlarged portion, or head, to retain thelock arm 170 to theinner slide segment 16. Alternatively, other methods may be used to secure thesplit lock arm 170 to theinner slide segment 16, such as passing screws or rivets through the opening(s) 165, for example. - Extending from the
first end 172, thesplit lock arm 170 also includes a resilientfirst arm 234 and a resilientsecond arm 236 that angle slightly away from theside wall 64. Thearms inner slide segment 16 to asecond end 174 of thesplit lock arm 170. Thefirst arm 234 includes anotch 237, preferably located near thesecond end 174 of thesplit lock arm 170. Thenotch 237 defines anengagement surface 237 a, which faces a forward end of theinner slide segment 16. - The
second arm 236 includes anangled portion 173, which is angled inwardly toward the inner surface of theside wall 64 and defines a contact surface, preferably configured for contact with a release member, as is described in greater detail below. Thesecond arm 236 also defines anotch 238, which preferably is positioned to a rearward side of theangled portion 173 and faces thenotch 237 of thefirst arm 234. Preferably, thenotch 238 defines a pair ofengagement surfaces first engagement surface 238 a faces a forward end of theinner slide segment 16 and thesecond engagement surface 238 b faces a rearward end of theinner slide segment 16. Thenotches opening 176 near thesecond end 174 of thesplit lock arm 170. - The
arms split lock arm 170 desirably can each be flexed independently inwardly toward theside wall 64 of theinner slide segment 16, without affecting the other arm, and then allowed to resiliently return to its original position. Anopening 178 is provided in theside wall 64 of theinner slide segment 16 adjacent to thesecond end 174 of thelock arm 170. When thearm 236 is fully flexed toward theside wall 64, preferably, theangled portion 173 of thesplit lock arm 170 extends into theopening 178. - Referring to
FIG. 7 , theintermediate slide segment 18 includes astop 188. In the illustrated embodiment, thestop 188 is a bridge-like structure located immediately forward of anend portion 132 of anactuator 124. Thestop 188 desirably is raised relative to theside wall 44 of theintermediate slide segment 18, in a direction toward theinner slide segment 16. Each of a forward side and a rearward side of thestop 188, define astop surface - With reference to
FIGS. 7 and 8 , preferably, the shape of theopening 176 formed by thenotches split lock arm 170 generally corresponds to the shape of thestop 188. Thesplit lock arm 170 is biased toward theside wall 44 of theintermediate slide segment 18 so that, when theinner slide segment 16 is extended with respect to theintermediate slide segment 18, thesplit lock arm 170 engages thestop 188 and, when theinner slide segment 18 is fully extended, thestop 188 is positioned within theopening 176 of thesplit lock arm 170. When thestop 188 is positioned within theopening 176, the biasing of thesplit lock arm 170 positions the engagement surfaces 237 a, 238 a, 238 b adjacent the stop surfaces 188 a, 188 b. As a result, movement of theinner slide segment 16 with respect to theintermediate slide segment 18 is prevented until one or botharms split lock arm 170 are moved toward the inner surface of theinner slide segment 16, against its resilient biasing force, to remove thestop 188 from within theopening 176. - Preferably, to permit retraction of the
inner slide segment 16 relative to theintermediate slide segment 18, thearm 236 is moved toward theside wall 64 of theinner slide segment 16 so that theengagement surface 238 b is no longer adjacent thestop surface 188 a. As a result, retraction of theinner slide segment 16 is permitted. However, removal of theinner slide segment 16 from theintermediate slide segment 18 is inhibited due to theengagement surface 237 a still being located adjacent thestop surface 188 b. Accordingly, unintentional disconnection of theinner slide segment 16 from the remainder of theslide assembly 12 is prevented. To permit removal of theinner slide segment 16 from theintermediate slide segment 18, botharms inner slide segment 16 so that both the engagement surfaces 237 a, 238 a, 238 b are no longer adjacent the stop surfaces 188 a, 188 b. A number of suitable actuator(s) may be provided to permit selective movement of thearms arm 236, and for moving botharms - IV. Preferred Embodiment of a Slide Lock Release Arrangement
- As shown in
FIG. 6 , preferably theinner slide segment 16 supports anelongated release member 200 and abiasing arrangement 311. Therelease member 200 and biasingarrangement 311 function as an actuator to facilitate releasing theinner slide segment 16 from the fully extended state shown and described in connection withFIGS. 7 and 8 . Theelongated release member 200 is slidably received within thechannel 66 of theinner slide segment 16. Preferably, the biasingarrangement 311 biases therelease member 200 toward a forward end of theinner slide segment 16, as shown inFIG. 6 . - With reference to
FIGS. 9A-9C , the illustratedelongated release member 200 is advantageously formed of a body of polymeric material having a low coefficient of friction such that it can easily slide within thechannel 66. Examples of suitable polymeric materials include polyethylene, polypropylene, or acetyl. In addition, other suitable materials may also be used, including non-polymeric materials, as will be appreciated by one of skill in the art. As shown inFIG. 4 , thechannel 66 is formed byupper wall 60,lower wall 62, and an interconnectingside wall 64 of theinner slide segment 16. Because the upper andlower walls channel 66, preferably therelease member 200 hasedges 202 that are beveled to allow therelease member 200 to be slidably captured within thechannel 66, as shown inFIG. 6 . - The
release member 200 further comprises abottom sliding surface 206 having alongitudinal groove 204 formed therein. Preferably, thegroove 204 spans the length of therelease member 200. Thelongitudinal groove 204 provides a clearance space to permit therelease member 200 to slidably pass over fasteners, such as rivets or screws, that may be mounted through theside wall 64 of theinner slide segment 16. In the illustrated arrangement, afront edge 208 of therelease member 200 is chamfered such that asurface 210 facing theintermediate slide segment 18 is longer than the opposingsurface 206. - The
release member 200 includes anopening 309 with aflexible arm 313 supported therein, preferably in plane with therelease member body 200. Preferably, theflexible arm 313 is formed during the molding of therelease member body 200 such that thearm 313 and therelease body 200 form a unitary member. However, in alternative arrangements, thearm 313 may be a separate member attached to therelease member 200 by a suitable method. - As shown in
FIG. 13A , achannel 317 formed in the inner slidesegment side wall 64 receives acam follower 315 disposed at an end of thearm 313. Preferably, a lower surface of thechannel 317 defines a cam surface and thearm 313 biases thecam follower 315 into contact with the cam surface. The biasing force of thearm 313 may be produced by the arm itself, due to the resiliency of the material from which therelease member 200 is constructed. Preferably, however, a biasing member, such as an “L-shaped” leaf spring 321, biases the flexible arm 312 so that thecam follower 315 contacts the lower cam surface of thechannel 317. - Preferably, the
channel 317 is substantially linear and angled with respect to a longitudinal axis of theinner slide segment 16 such that a forward end of thechannel 317 is lower than a rearward end of the channel 317 (with respect to the orientation shown inFIGS. 13A and 13B ). Accordingly, the biasing force of thearm 313 and/or spring 321 urges thecam follower 315 toward the lower, forward end of thechannel 317. As a result, therelease member 200 is urged toward a forward end of theinner slide segment 16 in a relaxed position of thearm 313 and/or spring 321. - The forward end of the lower, cam surface of the
channel 317 desirably includes a depression, ordetent portion 323. The detent advantageously retains theelongated release member 200 in its forward position relative to theinner slide segment 16, as shown and discussed in connection withFIG. 6 . Thus, to move therelease member 200 in a rearward direction, the resistance provided by the detent, in addition to the resistance provided by thearm 313 and/or spring 321, must be overcome. Advantageously, incidental movement of therelease member 200 is reduced, if not entirely eliminated. - Preferably, the
cam follower 315 includes an enlarged,circular portion 315 a. Thecircular portion 315 a is offset from a plane occupied by thearm 313, in a direction toward theside wall 64 of theinner slide segment 16. Desirably, at least an upper portion of thecircular portion 315 a extends above the upper surface of thearm 313. Accordingly, the leaf spring 321 is prevented from moving out-of-plane with thearm 313, in a direction toward theinner slide segment 16, by thecircular portion 315 a. Advantageously, such an arrangement provides a cost-efficient, reliable biasing mechanism for therelease member body 200. - With reference to FIGS. 9A-C, desirably, the
release member 200 further includes aflange 214 on a forward end thereof. Theflange 214 is configured to provide apush surface 216 providing an increased surface area to receive anactuating force 319 applied by a user of theslide assembly 12. - During initial assembly, the
release member 200 is inserted into the innerslide segment channel 56. The draft angle of theside walls 202 and the correspondingly shaped inner slide segment upper andlower walls slide segment 200 in sliding engagement with theinner slide segment 16 and disallow removal except by sliding. That is, therelease member 200 is inhibited from being removed from theinner slide segment 16 in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis of theslide segment 16. -
FIGS. 10-12 illustrate therelease member 200 installed into theinner slide segment 16. As shown inFIG. 10 , the chamferedfront edge 208 of therelease member 200 does not engage theangled portion 173 of thesplit lock arm 170 because thebiasing arrangement 311 maintains therelease member 200 in a forward position within thechannel 66 of theinner slide segment 16. During operation, however, as therelease member 200 is pushed in a rearward direction by an actuatingforce 319 toward the split lock arm 170 (FIG. 13B ), the chamferedfront edge 208 contacts, and then slides over, theangled portion 173, resiliently depressing thearm 236 toward theside wall 64 of theinner slide segment 16. - As the
arm 236 is depressed, thenotch 238 is biased away from the stop 188 (FIG. 7 ) of theintermediate slide segment 18. Thestop 188 disengages from thenotch 238 once theangled portion 173 is pushed sufficiently toward theside wall 64, thereby allowing theinner slide segment 16 to be retracted into theintermediate slide segment 18, as shown inFIG. 3B . Theinner slide segment 16 and theintermediate slide segment 18 can then be retracted into theouter slide segment 20 as shown inFIG. 3A . - It is to be noted that although the chamfered
front edge 208 engages theangled portion 173 of thearm 236, allowing theinner slide segment 16 to be retracted into theintermediate slide segment 18, thenotch 237 of thearm 234 remains in contact with thestop 188, preventing theinner slide segment 16 from being removed from theintermediate slide segment 18. Thus, applying the actuatingforce 319 to therelease member 200 allows theinner slide segment 16 to be retracted into theintermediate slide segment 18, but, preferably, does not allow theinner slide segment 16 to be disconnected from theslide assembly 12. - Advantageously, the
release member 200 provides access to the release mechanism at the front of theslide assembly 12, such that a user is not required to reach toward the rear of theinner slide segment 16. This offers a tremendous convenience because the technician can see therelease flanges 214 while in front of theserver computer 10 and does not have to reach around theserver computer 10 and feel for therelease flanges 214. Moreover, since the actuatingforce 319 required to operate the release mechanism is in the same direction as a retracting force on theserver computer 10, by applying a sufficient force to eachrelease member 200, a technician can unlock theslide assemblies 12 and retract theserver computer 10 with a single motion. - Advantageously, the illustrated
biasing arrangement 311 is configured to reset therelease member 200 upon cessation of the actuatingforce 319. As illustrated inFIG. 13B , when theforce 319 is applied to theflange 214 of therelease member 200, the release member is moved out of thedetent 323 and in a rearward direction toward the rearward end of thechannel 173, overcoming the biasing force of thearm 313 and/or spring 321. Once theforce 319 is removed, the spring 321 and/or theflexible arm 313 exert counter forces on thecam follower 315. In response, thecam follower 315 slides on the lower, cam surface of thechannel 317 toward a forward end thereof, thereby moving therelease member 200 toward a forward end of theinner slide segment 16, until thecam follower 315 returns to a position within thedetent 323, as shown inFIG. 13A . - Thus, a simple to manufacture, assemble, and operate front release mechanism is provided that preferably (1) is fully contained within the channels of the slide segments, (2) is accessible from the front of the
slide assembly 12, and (3) resets automatically upon removal of the actuating force. - Although the illustrated slide assembly embodiments include an
inner slide segment 16, anintermediate slide segment 18, and anouter slide segment 20, it is to be noted that the locking and release mechanisms described herein can be incorporated in slide assemblies having two or more slide segments. Thus, the locking and release mechanisms can be incorporated in slide assemblies having more than one intermediate slide segment, or no intermediate slide segment. - V. Preferred Embodiment of a Slide Controller Arrangement
- With reference to
FIG. 14 , one embodiment of an actuator assembly, orcontroller 120, for theslide assembly 12 is shown. In the illustrated embodiment, thecontroller 120 comprises anactuator 124 and alatch 126. Thisactuator 124 embodiment comprises a thin (in a transverse direction), planar, cantileveredprimary arm 128 having anend portion 132 of increased thickness. The thickness of theend portion 132 preferably is greatest near a front end of thecontroller 120. Theend portion 132 desirably has roundedcomers 134 and agroove 136 formed in the center thereof. - The
latch 126 comprises a thin, planar, cantileveredsecondary arm 138 having a raised lockingportion 140 at a front end thereof. The lockingportion 140 includes a generally planar slopingfront face 142 and a generally planar slopingrear face 144. Desirably, thefront face 142 extends a slightly greater distance above the planar surface of thesecondary arm 138 than does therear face 144. In the illustrated embodiment, arecess 146 is formed between thefront face 142 and therear face 144. Therecess 146 is defined between afront locking surface 150 and arear locking surface 152. - The
controller 120 desirably is formed of a stiff yet flexible material to allow the primary andsecondary arms controller 120 is formed of a resilient, durable, low-friction plastic material, such as acetal. Alternatively, however, other suitable materials may be used, including non-plastic materials, for example. - The forward end of the
intermediate slide segment 18 is shown inFIG. 15 . As illustrated, anopening 156 is provided in theside wall 44 of theintermediate slide segment 18 near the forward end thereof. Thecontroller 120 is positioned behind theside wall 44 so that theend portion 132 of theactuator 124 and the lockingportion 140 of thelatch 126 are in registration with theopening 156. Thecontroller 120 is attached to an outer surface of theside wall 44 by suitable means, such as a pair of rivets 158 (seeFIG. 16 ) that extend through openings formed in a side of thecontroller 120 opposite theend portion 132. - Referring again to
FIG. 5 , thelatch 126 is illustrated in a first position, wherein the planar surface of theactuator 124 rests against the outer surface of theside wall 44 of theintermediate slide segment 18. The lockingportion 140 of thelatch 126 extends through theopening 156 in theside wall 44 and into thechannel 56 of theintermediate slide segment 18. - To ensure proper operation of the
latch 126, thefront face 142 desirably forms an angle α with a plane parallel to the plane of theside wall 44 of between 10 and 80 degrees when thelatch 126 is in the first position illustrated inFIG. 5 . More desirably, the angle α is between 30 and 45 degrees. Preferably, the angle α is 38 degrees. Therear face 144 likewise desirably forms an angle γ with a plane parallel to the plane of theside wall 44 of between 10 and 80 degrees when thelatch 126 is in the first position illustrated inFIG. 5 . More desirably, the angle is γ is between 15 and 30 degrees. Preferably, the angle γ is 25 degrees. The front and rear locking surfaces 150, 152 preferably are disposed generally perpendicularly to theside wall 44 when the latch is in the first position. - One embodiment of the
latch 126 serves to retain the bearingassembly 80 near the forward end of thechannel 56 when theinner slide segment 16 is removed from theintermediate slide segment 18. When thelatch 126 is in the first position illustrated inFIG. 5 , the lockingportion 140 extends into thechannel 56 and contacts theside portion 96 of the bearingretainer 84. Thetransverse ridge 98 of the bearingretainer 84 is captured between thefront locking surface 150 and therear locking surface 152. Rearward movement of the bearingassembly 80 is limited by therear locking surface 152. Forward movement of the bearingassembly 80 is limited by thefront locking surface 150. With the bearingassembly 80 retained near the front of thechannel 56, it is easier to guide the rearward end of theinner slide segment 16 past the forward end of the bearingassembly 80 as the inner slide segment is inserted into thechannel 56. - With reference to
FIG. 7 , preferably, aguide member 153 is positioned between the bearingretainer 84 and the forward end of theintermediate slide segment 18. As described above, the bearingretainer 84 preferably is secured near a forward end of theintermediate slide segment 18 upon removal of theinner slide segment 16. Theguide member 153 is configured to extend between the bearingretainer 84 and the forward end of theintermediate slide segment 18 to assist in aligning theinner slide segment 16 with the bearingassembly 80 upon reinsertion of theinner slide segment 16 into theintermediate slide segment 18. - The illustrated
guide member 153 includes a pair of generallycylindrical guide portions 154 extending lengthwise within upper and lower ends of thechannel 66 defined by theintermediate slide segment 18. Each of theguide portions 154 preferably have a diameter of a similar dimension as a diameter of theball bearings 86 and a length generally equal to the distance between the forward end of the bearingassembly 80 and the forward end of theintermediate slide segment 18. Abridge portion 155 interconnects, and properly spaces, the pair ofguide portions 154. Preferably, theguide member 153 is constructed of a plastic material and is configured to snap into place within thechannel 66 of theintermediate slide segment 18. - With reference to
FIGS. 7 and 17 , one advantage of theslide assembly 12 presented herein is that it does not require a separate manual operation to lock or unlock the bearingassembly 80. When theinner slide segment 16 is inserted and moved rearwardly in thechannel 56, thefirst arm 234 of thesplit lock arm 170 contacts thefront face 142 of thelatch 126 of thecontroller 120. This causes thelatch 126 of thecontroller 120 and, specifically, thesecondary arm 138 to flex away from theside wall 44 of theintermediate slide segment 18. In this second latch position, illustrated inFIGS. 17 and 18 , the lockingportion 140 does not engage thetransverse ridge 98 of the bearingretainer 84. The bearingassembly 80 is therefore free to move in thechannel 56, typically along with movement of theinner slide segment 16. - As the
inner slide segment 16 is moved forward in thechannel 56, the bearingassembly 80 is moved toward thelatch 126. When theinner slide segment 16 is removed from thechannel 56, thetransverse ridge 98 of the bearingretainer 84 contacts therear face 144 of thelatch 126, causing thelatch 126 to move to the second latch position, wherein thesecondary arm 138 is flexed away from theside wall 44 of theintermediate slide segment 18. Thetransverse ridge 98 rides over therear face 144 of thelatch 126 and into therecess 146 to lock the bearingassembly 80 in place again. - In accordance with one embodiment, to remove the
inner slide segment 16 from thechannel 56 of theintermediate slide segment 18, thearms split lock arm 170 are moved toward theside wall 64 of theinner slide segment 16, preferably by manually pressing the actuator 124 towards thesplit lock arm 170, as shown inFIG. 19 . This prevents theinner slide segment 16, and the attachedserver computer 10, from unintentionally being detached from the rest of theslide assembly 12 and possibly causing damage to theserver computer 10. By moving both of thearms split lock arm 170 toward theside wall 64, theopening 176 of thesplit lock arm 170 is released from thestop 188, and theinner slide segment 16 can then be removed from thechannel 56. Advantageously, a rearward end of therelease member 200 is positioned forwardly of a forward end of thesplit lock arm 170. Thus, access to thesplit lock arm 170 by theactuator 124 is permitted when therelease member 200 is in its forward-most position. - VI. Preferred Embodiment of a Slide Sequencing and Lock Arrangement
- With reference to
FIG. 20 , theslide assembly 12 desirably also includes alock arrangement 389 for locking theintermediate slide segment 18 in an extended position with respect to theouter slide segment 20. In the illustrated embodiment, thelock 389 comprises apivot arm 390 that is pivotally attached by arivet 391, or other suitable fastener, to theside wall 44 of theintermediate slide segment 18. Preferably, thepivot arm 390 comprises a generally planarmain portion 392, which is aligned with theside wall 44 of theintermediate slide segment 18. Thepivot arm 390 rotates about an axis perpendicular to theside wall 44. A forward end of thepivot arm 390 includes ahook 303 and a rearward end of thepivot arm 390 includes atab 393. Thetab 393 extends toward theside wall 28 of theouter slide segment 20 through anopening 394 provided in theside wall 44 of theintermediate slide segment 18. - With reference to
FIGS. 20 and 21 , anactuator 395 desirably protrudes from theside wall 28 of theouter slide segment 20 toward theintermediate slide segment 18. In the illustrated embodiment, theactuator 395 is generally arrow-shaped, having atip 396, a rearward-facingsloping surface 397, and a forward-facingstop surface 398, which extends generally perpendicularly to a longitudinal axis of theslide assembly 12. - When the
intermediate slide segment 18 and theinner slide segment 16, together, are fully extended with respect to theouter slide segment 20, as shown inFIG. 3B , thetab 393 is brought to a forward side of thestop surface 398. In such a position, preferably, thehook 303 rests on the inner surface of thelower wall 62 of theinner slide segment 16, such that thetab 393 does not engage thestop surface 398 and the inner andintermediate slide segments outer slide segment 20. However, if theinner slide segment 16 is extended with respect to the fully extendedintermediate slide segment 18, thehook 303 no longer contacts theinner slide segment 16 and thepivot arm 390 is rotated by aspring 301 such that thetab 393 shifts upwardly (as shown inFIG. 20 ) within theopening 394. This brings thetab 393 into abutting engagement with thestop surface 398, and thus prevents retraction of theintermediate slide segment 18 with respect to theouter slide segment 20. - To release the
pivot arm 390 from thestop surface 398, theinner slide segment 16 is retracted with respect to theintermediate slide segment 18, as illustrated inFIG. 22 . As theinner slide segment 16 is retracted, the rear end of theinner slide segment 16 slides over a forward end of thehook 303 and rotates thepivot arm 390 to move thetab 393 downwardly within theopening 394 to a position below thestop surface 398. This releases thetab 393 thepivot arm 390 from thestop surface 398 and permits theintermediate slide segment 18 and theinner slide segment 16 to be retracted together with respect to theouter slide segment 20. - With reference to
FIG. 23 , in some instances, pulling forwardly on theinner slide segment 16 may cause theinner slide segment 16 to move relative to theintermediate slide segment 18 before the intermediate slide segment is fully extended. As illustrated inFIG. 23 , when theinner slide segment 16 is extended with respect to theintermediate slide segment 18 before theintermediate slide segment 18 is fully extended, thepivot arm 390 is rotated by thespring 303 such that thehook 303 shifts downwardly into aslot 161 defined by thelower wall 62 of theinner slide segment 16. This locks theinner slide segment 16 to theintermediate slide segment 18, causing thesegments - If the inner and
intermediate slide segments tab 393 of thepivot arm 390 contacts theactuator 395. With further extension of theintermediate slide segment 18, thetab 393 rides over thesloping surface 397 of theactuator 395 and then rotates into abutting engagement with thestop surface 398. In this position, theintermediate slide segment 18 is locked in the fully extended state, as described above. Further, when thepivot arm 390 is rotated due to thetab 393 moving over thesloping surface 397, thehook 303 is withdrawn from thenotch 161, thus allowing theinner slide segment 16 to be extended with respect to theintermediate slide segment 18. - Although this invention has been disclosed in the context of certain preferred embodiments and examples, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that the present invention extends beyond the specifically disclosed embodiments to other alternative embodiments and/or uses of the invention and obvious modifications and equivalents thereof. In addition, while a number of variations of the invention have been shown and described in detail, other modifications, which are within the scope of this invention, will be readily apparent to those of skill in the art based upon this disclosure. It is also contemplated that various combinations or subcombinations of the specific features and aspects of the embodiments may be made and still fall within the scope of the invention. Accordingly, it should be understood that various features and aspects of the disclosed embodiments can be combined with or substituted for one another in order to form varying modes of the disclosed invention.
Claims (25)
1. A slide assembly, comprising:
a first slide segment including an upper portion, a lower portion, and a web extending between said upper portion and said lower portion;
a second slide segment including an upper portion, a lower portion, and a web extending between said upper portion and said lower portion, said second slide segment telescopingly engaged with the first slide segment;
a slide lock arrangement movable in a transverse direction relative to said web of said first slide segment between a locked position, wherein said first slide segment is secured in a substantially fixed position with respect to said second slide segment, and an unlocked position, wherein said first slide segment is movable relative to said second slide segment;
a slide lock release comprising a release body and a biasing arrangement, said release body movable along a longitudinal axis of said first slide segment, in response to a force applied in a first direction, to contact and move said slide lock arrangement in said transverse direction to said unlocked position, said biasing arrangement configured to move said release body in a second direction, upon removal of said force, to allow said slide lock arrangement to move from said unlocked position, toward said locked position, wherein said biasing arrangement comprises a cam surface defined by one of said first slide segment and said release body, an arm supported by the other of said first slide segment and said release body and including a cam follower, said arm biased to move along said cam surface, said cam surface configured to move said release body in said second direction in response to said biasing of said arm.
2. The slide assembly of claim 1 , wherein said cam surface is defined by an angled slot in said one of said first slide segment and said release body, wherein said arm moves in a direction from a relaxed position, toward a biased position, when said release body moves in said first direction.
3. The slide assembly of claim 2 , further comprising a leaf spring having a first end and a second end, said first end supported by said other of said first slide segment and said release body and said second end arranged to apply a biasing force to said arm.
4. The slide assembly of claim 3 , wherein said arm is configured to move in a plane substantially parallel to a web of said first slide segment, and said leaf spring is configured to inhibit movement of said arm in a direction perpendicular to said plane and away from said first slide segment.
5. The slide assembly of claim 1 , wherein said release body is supported within a channel defined by said first slide segment, and between said first slide segment and said second slide segment.
6. The slide assembly of claim 1 , wherein a rearward end of said release body contacts said slide lock arrangement, said rearward end including a chamfered surface configured to contact an engagement surface of said slide lock arrangement.
7. The slide assembly of claim 1 , wherein a surface of said release body facing a web of said first slide segment includes a central groove.
8. The slide assembly of claim 1 , wherein said slide lock arrangement is configured to permit movement of said first slide segment in only one direction with respect to said second slide segment said unlocked position.
9. A slide assembly, comprising:
a first slide segment having a forward end and a rearward end;
a second slide segment having a forward end and a rearward end, said second slide segment telescopingly engaged with the first slide segment;
a slide lock arrangement movable between a locked position, wherein said first slide segment is secured in a substantially fixed position with respect to said second slide segment, and an unlocked position, wherein said first slide segment is movable relative to said second slide segment;
a slide lock release comprising a release body and a biasing arrangement, said release body movable relative to said first slide segment between a first position, wherein said slide lock arrangement is permitted to move to said locked position, and a second position, wherein said slide lock arrangement is moved to said unlocked position, said biasing arrangement configured to bias said release body toward said first position;
wherein said release body is positioned toward said forward end of said first slide segment relative to said slide lock arrangement, and wherein a rearward-most end of said release body is spaced from a forward-most end of said slide lock arrangement in said first position of said release body, and wherein said first slide segment is movable relative to said second slide segment in only one direction in said unlocked position of said slide lock arrangement.
10. The slide assembly of claim 9 , wherein said slide lock arrangement includes a substantially planar lock arm, wherein said release body and said lock arm are positioned substantially coplanar with one another.
11. The slide assembly of claim 9 , wherein said slide lock arrangement is further movable to a released position in which said first slide segment is moveable in both directions relative to said second slide segment, said slide assembly additionally comprising an actuator configured to move said slide lock arrangement to said released position without movement of said release body.
12. The slide assembly of claim 9 , wherein said release body is accessible from forward end of said first slide segment in said first position and moves rearwardly relative to first slide segment to second position.
13. The slide assembly of claim 9 , wherein said biasing arrangement comprises a cam surface defined by one of said first slide segment and said release body, an arm supported by the other of said first slide segment and said release body, said arm including a cam follower and being biased to move along said cam surface, said cam surface configured to move said release body in said second direction in response to said biasing force.
14. The slide assembly of claim 13 , wherein said cam surface is defined by angled slot in said one of said first slide segment and said release body, wherein said arm moves in a direction from a relaxed position, toward a biased position, when said release body moves in said first direction.
15. The slide assembly of claim 14 , further comprising a leaf spring having a first end and a second end, said first end supported by said other of said first slide segment and said release body and said second end arranged to apply a biasing force to said arm.
16. The slide assembly of claim 15 , wherein said arm is configured to move in a plane substantially parallel to a web of said first slide segment, and said leaf spring is configured to inhibit movement of said arm in a direction perpendicular to said plane and away from said first slide segment.
17. The slide assembly of claim 9 , wherein said release body is supported within a channel defined by said first slide segment, and between said first slide segment and said second slide segment.
18. The slide assembly of claim 9 , wherein a rearward end of said release body contacts said slide lock arrangement, said rearward end including a chamfered surface configured to contact an engagement surface of said slide lock arrangement.
19. The slide assembly of claim 9 , wherein a surface of said release body facing a web of said first slide segment includes a central groove.
20. The slide assembly of claim 9 , wherein said slide lock arrangement is configured to permit movement of said first slide segment in only one direction with respect to said second slide segment said unlocked position.
21. A slide assembly, comprising:
at least one slide segment including an upper portion, a lower portion and a web extending between said upper portion and said lower portion;
an actuator comprising an elongate, planar body configured to be supported between said upper and lower portions of said slide segment and moveable along a longitudinal axis of said slide segment, an arm extending from said body and biased in a first direction, said arm including a cam follower configured to engage a cam surface of said slide segment to move said actuator relative to said slide segment in response to said biasing of said arm.
22. The slide assembly of claim 21 , wherein said arm is unitarily formed with body.
23. The slide assembly of claim 21 , wherein said cam surface is linear and defined by angled slot in said slide segment.
24. The slide assembly of claim 21 , additionally comprising a leaf spring held by body and applying a biasing force to said arm.
25. The slide assembly of claim 24 , wherein said leaf spring substantially prevents arm from moving out of plane with body to maintain cam follower in contact with cam surface.
