Abstract
A storage container has a base defining a bottom wall and a side wall extending upwardly from the bottom wall to define a storage receptacle. A first cover section is coupled to the base side wall and extends over a portion of the storage receptacle. An exterior side of the first cover section defines a writing surface. A second cover section is pivotably coupled to the base side wall and movable between a closed position, in which the second cover section overlies a remaining portion of the storage receptacle, and an open position, in which the second cover section is rotated away from the storage receptacle. The storage container may have an overall profile height that is sufficiently low to allow insertion of the storage container into a stowage space having a low profile height.
Description
- This application claims the benefit under 35 U.S.C. § 119(e) U.S. provisional patent application Serial No. 60/453,493 filed Mar. 11, 2003, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference.
- The present disclosure relates generally to file organization, and more particularly, to portable file storage containers.
- Various types of portable file storage containers are known in the art. Known file storage containers are often bulky and require excessive storage space. In addition, such previous storage containers occupy excessive space when open, thereby making it difficult to obtain access to the contents of the container while simultaneously performing other tasks, such as writing.

- The present disclosure is directed to a portable storage container for storing and transporting documents such as files. Certain embodiments disclosed herein include a split cover assembly which allows a portion of the container to be opened, thereby allowing access to the contents stored therein, while providing a work surface for writing and the like. In addition, exemplary embodiments are disclosed in which the storage container has a reduced overall profile height, thereby allowing the storage container to be stored in spaces having a restricted height dimension. The embodiments disclosed herein are but a few of the several alternatives intended to fall within the scope of the appended claims.
- FIG. 1 is illustrates a first embodiment of a
portable storage container 10 constructed in accordance with the present disclosure. Thestorage container 10 includes abase 12 having abottom wall 14 and aside wall 16 extending upwardly therefrom. Thebottom wall 14 andside wall 16 define astorage receptacle 18, as best shown in FIG. 2. Thestorage receptacle 18 is sized to receive individual documents, such as 8.5 inch by 11 inch (or other sized) sheets of paper, or collections of documents, such as bound papers or file folders. - First and
second cover sections side wall 16. In the illustrated embodiment,bosses 22 are formed in the base andannular rings 24 are formed at the bottom of thecover sections bosses 22, thereby forming a pivoting hinge connection between the cover sections and the base. An exterior side of eachcover section writing surface 26. Eachcover section inner wall 28 spaced a distance from the interior side of eachcover section storage pocket 30. Thestorage pocket 30 may be sized to receive standard stationary sizes such as 8.5 inch by 11 inch sheets of paper, standard sized envelopes, or other common documents. In the illustrated embodiment,tabbed folders 32 are disposed inside thestorage pocket 30. Section dividers may be disposed in thestorage pocket 30 to provide a tiered or cascaded appearance to improve visibility of the files inserted therein. - Each
cover section storage container 10. Bothcover sections cover section 20 a is shown with aninterior edge 34 positioned adjacent thebase 12, so that thecover section 20 a overlies a portion of thecentral storage area 18. Similarly,cover section 20 b is shown with itsinterior edge 36 positioned adjacent thebase 12 so that it also overlies a portion of thecentral storage area 18. With bothcover sections central storage area 18 is substantially enclosed and thestorage container 10 will retain articles disposed therein during transport. Thestorage pockets 30 of thecover sections central storage area 18 when thecover sections - While the
interior edges cover sections interior edges extended storage pockets 30 and writingsurfaces 26 for eachcover section writing surfaces 26 to have a size sufficient for receiving the desired stationery size, such as an 8.5 inch by 11 inch sheet of paper. - Each
cover section cover section 20 b is rotated to the open position, in which theinterior edge 36 is disposed away from thebase 12. In this position, the contents ofstorage pocket 30 ofcover section 20 b may be accessed, as well as a portion of thecentral storage area 18. If thecover section 20 a remains in the closed position, thewriting surface 26 is also presented to the user, thereby providing simultaneous access to at least a portion of the contents of thestorage container 10 and a work surface. Thestorage container 10 may include ahandle 38 and a roller (not shown) to facilitate transport of the container. - With the
cover sections storage container 10 defines a reduced overall profile height H which allows thestorage container 10 to be stored in areas having a restricted height. Thenesting storage pockets 30 minimize the height of theoverall storage container 10. As a result, the storage container may be stored under beds, car seats, or other areas having a restricted height. For example, the overall profile height H of thestorage container 10 may be less than approximately 4 inches. - The

portable storage container 50 is illustrated in FIGS. 2 and 3. Thecontainer 50 is substantially similar to the embodiment of FIGS. 1 and 2 described above. Accordingly, thecontainer 50 includes abase 52 defining abottom wall 54 and aside wall 56 extending upwardly from thebottom wall 54. Thebottom wall 54 andside wall 56 define astorage receptacle 58.Cover sections base 52 for rotation between open and closed positions. Eachcover section writing surface 26 and may include aninterior storage pocket 68. - As best shown in FIG. 3, the
cover sections Cover section 60 a may be sized so that its interior storage pocket may accommodate standard envelope sizes, whilestorage pocket 68 ofcover section 60 b may be sized to receive standard 8.5 inch by 11 inch papers. Consequently, the corresponding writing surfaces 66 of thecover sections surface 66 ofcover section 60 a may be sized to receive standard envelopes, while the writingsurface 66 of thecover section 60 b may be sized to receive standard 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper. - An
interlock 70 may be provided for selectively and independently securing thecover sections divider wall 74 extending upwardly from the basebottom wall 54. Thedivider wall 74 defines aslot 76. Each of thecover sections tab 78 sized for insertion into theslot 76. For clarity, only thetab 78 forcover section 60 a is shown in FIG. 6. Thetab 78 is coupled to thecover section 60 a by a hinge which, in the illustrated embodiment, is provided as aU-shaped section 80 having first andsecond legs first leg 82 includes thetab 78 and also terminates with agrip 86. In operation, a user may grasp thegrip 86 and bend thefirst leg 82 away from thedivider 74 until thetab 78 disengages from theslot 76, thereby allowing thecover section 60 a to be rotated to the open position. A similar hinge, tab, and grip are associated with theother cover section 60 b so that it may be selectively disengaged from thedivider 74 and rotated to the open position. Thedivider 74,hinge 80,tab 78, andgrip 86 are all disposed below an upper margin of thecover sections - A third embodiment of the storage container is illustrated in FIG. 7. The
storage container 100 is similar to the previous embodiments in that it includes abase 102 and rotatable coversections cover section surfaces cover section 104 a may be sized to adequately store 8.5 inch by 11 inch sheets of paper in a storage pocket (not shown), and thewriting surface 106 a may be sized such that it may receive an entire sheet of said paper. Similarly,cover section 106 b may include an interior storage pocket (not shown) sized to receive a common envelope size, and its associatedwriting surface 106 b may be sized to receive an entire envelope. Thestorage container 100 may include ahandle 108 to facilitate carrying during transport. - The
cover sections cover sections storage container 100 while providing a writing surface on which a user may work. - A fourth embodiment of a storage container is illustrated in FIG. 8-11. The
storage container 120 includes a base having abottom wall 124 andside wall 126. Thebottom wall 124 andside wall 126 define astorage receptacle 128. Acover 130 is sized to overlie and enclose thestorage receptacle 128. Thecover 130 may releasably engage the base 122 such as by snap-fit engagement at several points about the periphery of thecover 130 andbase 122. Thestorage container 120 further includes aroller 132 that may be coupled to thebase 122 near thebottom wall 124 to facilitate transport and positioning of the storage container. - As best shown with reference to FIG. 9, the
storage container 120 has an overall profile height H that is sufficiently low to allow insertion of thestorage container 120 into a storage space having a low profile height. For example, the overall profile height H may be less than approximately 4 inches to allow thestorage container 120 to be inserted under beds, car seats, or other spaces having a restricted height. - A fifth embodiment of a storage container is illustrated in FIGS. 12 and 13. The
storage container 140 is similar to the first three embodiments, however the moveable or distal ends of the cover sections are at opposite ends of the container, rather than adjacent to one another. - The
storage container 140 includes a base 142 having abottom wall 144 and aside wall 146 extending upwardly therefrom. Thebottom wall 144 andside wall 146 of the base define astorage receptacle 148. In the illustrated embodiment, a distal edge of thecover section 150 a has been rotated away from the base 152, thereby exposingstorage pockets 156, which are sized to receive documents. Retaining members, such asflexible straps 158, may be provided with the storage pockets 156 to hold documents within the storage pockets 156. With thecover section 150 a in the open position, and thecover section 150 b in the closed position, a user is simultaneously provided access to the interior of the storage container and awriting surface 154 b upon which documents may be placed and marked. Furthermore, thestorage container 140 preferably has an overall profile height sufficiently low to the allow insertion of thestorage container 140 into a storage space having a low profile height. - A sixth embodiment of a storage container is illustrated in FIG. 14. In this embodiment, the
storage container 160 provides a cascading file storage section and an enclosable storage receptacle while maintaining a low profile height. More specifically, thestorage container 160 includes a base 162 having abottom wall 164 and aside wall 166 extending upwardly therefrom. Thebottom wall 164 andside wall 166 define afile receptacle 168 and astorage receptacle 170. Thefile receptacle 168 includes a plurality ofdividers 172 spaced from one another and oriented at a substantially similar angle to define a plurality of substantiallyparallel slots 174. As a result, when files are inserted into theslots 174, they are carried in a tiered or cascaded arrangement which improves visibility of the storage files. - In addition, a
cover 176 is pivotally coupled to the base 162 adjacent thestorage receptacle 170 and is movable between open and closed positions. Thecover 176 is sized to enclose thestorage receptacle 170 in the closed position.Wheels 178 and ahandle 179 are coupled to the base 162 to allow for easy transport of thestorage container 160. Thestorage container 160 preferably has a profile height sufficiently low to allow insertion of the storage container into a storage space having a low profile height. - A seventh embodiment of a storage container is illustrated in FIG. 15. This embodiment is particularly suited for travel and therefore has the appearance of conventional luggage. In particular, the
storage container 180 includes aretractable handle 182 andretractable wheel 184. As thestorage container 180 is suited for travel, the exterior may be covered with fabric, such as canvas, for improved durability. - Although certain apparatus constructed in accordance with the teachings of this disclosure have been described herein, the scope of coverage of the patent is not limited thereto. On the contrary, this patent covers all apparatuses, methods, and articles of manufacture of the teachings of the disclosure fairly falling within the scope of the appended claims either literally or under the doctrine of equivalents.
Claims (23)
1. A storage container comprising:
a base defining a bottom wall and a side wall extending upwardly from the bottom wall to define a storage receptacle;
a first cover section coupled to the base side wall and extending over a portion of the storage receptacle, the first cover section having an exterior side defining a writing surface; and
a second cover section pivotably coupled to the base side wall and movable between a closed position, in which the second cover section overlies a remaining portion of the storage receptacle, and an open position, in which the second cover section is rotated away from the storage receptacle.
2. The storage container of claim 1 , in which an interior side of the second cover section defines a storage pocket, wherein the storage pocket is housed inside the storage receptacle when the second cover section is in the closed position and wherein the storage pocket is accessible when the second cover section is in the open position.
3. The storage container of claim 1 , in which the first cover section is pivotably coupled to the base side wall and is movable between a closed position in which the first cover section overlies the portion of the storage receptacle and an open position in which the first cover section is rotated away from the storage receptacle.
4. The storage container of claim 3 , in which an interior side of the first cover section defines a storage pocket, wherein the first cover section storage pocket is housed inside the storage receptacle when the first cover section is in the closed position and wherein the first cover section storage pocket is accessible when the first cover section is in the open position.
5. The storage container of claim 3 , in which an interlock releasably engages the first and second cover sections to retain the first and second cover sections in the closed positions.
6. The storage container of claim 5 , in which the interlock is selectively releasable to release a selected one of the first and second cover sections.
7. The storage container of claim 1 , in which the base, first cover section, and second cover section in the closed position define an overall profile height sufficiently low to allow insertion of the storage container into a stowage space having a low profile height.
8. The storage container of claim 7 , in which the overall profile height is less than 4 inches.
9. The storage container of claim 7 , in which at least one of the first and second cover sections defines a recessed portion, and in which an interlock is disposed in the recessed portion and releasably engages the second cover section to retain the second cover section in the closed position.
10. The storage container of claim 1 , in which an exterior side of the second cover section defines a second writing surface.
11. The storage container of claim 1 , in which a roller is coupled to the base near the bottom wall.
12. The storage container of claim 1 , in which a handle is coupled to the base.
13. A storage container comprising:
a base defining a bottom wall and a side wall extending upwardly from the bottom wall to define a storage receptacle;
a first cover section coupled to the base side wall and extending over a portion of the storage receptacle; and
a second cover section pivotably coupled to the base side wall and movable between a closed position, in which the second cover section overlies a remaining portion of the storage receptacle, and an open position, in which the second cover section is rotated away from the storage receptacle;
wherein the base, first cover section, and second cover section in the closed position define an overall profile height sufficiently low to allow insertion of the storage container into a stowage space having a low profile height.
14. The storage container of claim 13 , in which the overall profile height is less than 4 inches.
15. The storage container of claim 13 , in which at least one of the first and second cover sections defines a recessed portion, and in which an interlock is disposed in the recessed portion and releasably engages the second cover section to retain the second cover section in the closed position.
16. The storage container of claim 13 , in which an exterior side of the first cover section defines a writing surface.
17. The storage container of claim 13 , in which an interior side of the second cover section defines a storage pocket, wherein the second cover section storage pocket is housed inside the storage receptacle when the second cover section is in the closed position and wherein the second cover section storage pocket is accessible when the second cover section is in the open position.
18. The storage container of claim 13 , in which the first cover section is pivotably coupled to the base side wall and is movable between a closed position in which the first cover section overlies the portion of the storage receptacle and an open position in which the first cover section is rotated away from the central storage receptacle.
19. The storage container of claim 18 , in which an interior side of the first cover section defines a storage pocket, wherein the first cover section storage pocket is housed inside the storage receptacle when the first cover section is in the closed position and wherein the first cover section storage pocket is accessible when the first cover section is in the open position.
20. The storage container of claim 18 , in which the first and second cover sections define recessed portions, and in which at least one interlock is disposed within the first and second cover section recessed portions and releasably engages the first and second cover sections to retain the first and second cover sections in the closed positions.
21. The storage container of claim 20 , in which the interlock is selectively releasable to release a selected one of the first and second cover sections.
22. A storage container comprising:
a base defining a bottom wall and a side wall extending upwardly from the bottom wall to define a storage receptacle; and
a cover releasably coupled to the base side wall and extending over the storage receptacle;
wherein the base and attached cover define an overall profile height sufficiently low to allow insertion of the storage container into a stowage space having a low profile height.
23. The storage container of claim 22 , in which the overall profile height is less than 4 inches.
