Accordingly, the size of the basket interior decreases when the basket 110 is opened and advantageously limits the carrying capacity of the basket.
- basket assembly 100 has been described in connection with a specific type of stroller frame, it will be understood that the basket assembly 100 can be implemented on strollers having different types of frames, such a jogging strollers, umbrella strollers, non-collapsible strollers, or other collapsible strollers.
Abstract
Description
- This application claims the benefit of U.S. provisional application No. 60/457,322, filed Mar. 26, 2003, which is incorporated by reference herein in its entirety.
- This invention relates to a basket assembly for a stroller. More specifically, this invention relates to a basket assembly that can be accessed easily, even while the seat back of the child seat is reclined, such as when an infant carrier is mounted to the child seat.
- Many strollers are equipped with baskets under the child seat for storage of various items, such as purses, diaper bags, groceries, and child toys. The basket typically is accessed from the rear of the stroller in an area below the seat back of the child seat. Accordingly, when the seat back is partially or fully reclined, access to the basket may be more difficult. This problem is greatest when the seat back is fully reclined, which occurs, for example, when a child in the child seat is sleeping or when an infant carrier is attached to the child seat.
- Thus, there is a need for a stroller that includes a basket that is easy to access regardless of the positioning of the seat back of the child seat.
- An aspect of the invention relates to a stroller that includes a stroller frame, a basket frame including a pair of arms mounted to the stroller frame and a rear cross member extending between the pair of arms, a latch mount coupled to the rear cross member, a basket mounted to pivot relative to the basket frame, and a latch coupled to the basket to releasably engage the latch mount, thereby allowing the basket to move between a closed position and an open position relative to the basket frame.
- According to another aspect of the invention, a basket assembly, for use on a stroller, includes a basket frame including a pair of arms mounted to a frame of the stroller and a rear cross member extending between the pair of arms, a latch mount coupled to the rear cross member, a basket mounted to pivot relative to the basket frame, and a latch coupled to the basket to releasably engage the latch mount, thereby allowing the basket to move between a closed position and an open position relative to the basket frame.
- It is to be understood that both the foregoing general description and the following detailed description are exemplary and explanatory only and are not restrictive of the invention, as claimed.
- The accompanying drawings, which are incorporated in and constitute a part of this specification, illustrate several embodiments of the invention and, together with the description, serve to explain the principles of the invention.

- Reference will now be made in detail to presently preferred embodiments of the invention, examples of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings. An effort has been made to use the same reference numbers throughout the drawings to refer to the same or like parts.
- FIGS. 1-3 illustrates a
stroller 1 that includes abasket assembly 100 in accordance with the invention. The frame of thestroller 1 generally includes right and leftfront legs 10, right and leftrear legs 20, and a handle assembly that includes right andleft push arms 30 terminating in ahandle grip portion 40. Thepush arms 30 can be pivotally connected to therear legs 20. Thestroller 1 also includes achild seat 50 that has a reclinable seat back 52. Thereclinable seat back 52 can pivot between an upright position (as shown in FIG. 1), a fully reclined position (as shown in FIG. 2), and intermediate partially reclined positions, depending on the needs of a child sitting in thechild seat 50. Thestroller 1 also can include a canopy 60 (not shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 for ease of understanding the invention) supported by acanopy frame 62. - The
basket assembly 100 of thestroller 1 is designed so that thebasket 110 can move between a closed position and an open position. FIG. 1 shows thebasket 110 in the closed position, and FIG. 2 shows thebasket 110 in a partially open position. As can be seen from FIG. 2, a user can easily access the interior of thebasket 110 even when the seat back 52 of thechild seat 50 is in the fully reclined position. - The
basket assembly 100 of thestroller 1 can include abasket frame 120, alatch mount 130, thebasket 110, and alatch 140. Thebasket assembly 100 is designed with relatively few parts. Thebasket frame 120 has a pair ofarms 122 and arear cross member 124 extending between the pair ofarms 122, as shown in FIGS. 5-7. Thebasket frame 120 is a generally U-shaped tubular structure. Eacharm 122 is pivotally mounted to a respectivefront leg 20 of the stroller frame, as shown in FIG. 3, and to a pivot P connected to an inboard side of therespective push arm 30, as shown in FIG. 4. - The
latch mount 130 is coupled to therear cross member 124 of thebasket frame 120. Thelatch mount 130 can be centrally disposed on therear cross member 124, as shown in FIGS. 5 and 7. FIGS. 8 and 9 illustrate thelatch mount 130 in detail. Thelatch mount 130 has atop face 131, arear face 132, afront face 133, alower face 138, apocket 134 that opens to the rear of thestroller 1, and achannel 135 that opens to a front of thestroller 1. Thepocket 134 includes an upwardly facingshoulder 136 for receipt of thelatch 140, to be described below. Thechannel 135 is configured to receive therear cross member 124 of thebasket frame 120. Thefront face 133 of thelatch mount 130 has anaperture 137 through which a fastener, such as a rivet, can be inserted to secure thelatch mount 130 to therear cross member 124. Thelatch mount 130 can also include ribs (not labeled) on itstop face 131 andrear face 132, and in thechannel 135. The ribs on thetop face 131 can serve as a visual indicator to identify where a user can place his foot during folding of the stroller, and the ribs on therear face 132 can serve as a visual indicator to identify where a user can place his hand to open/close thebasket 110. - The
basket 110 of thebasket assembly 100 is mounted to pivot relative to thebasket frame 120. Thebasket 110 includes anupper rim 112, best seen in FIGS. 5-7, and anenclosure 114 coupled to theupper rim 112. Theenclosure 114 can be formed of any suitable material, including molded plastic or, as shown in the illustrated embodiment, fabric. Thefabric enclosure 114 can include a sleeve to receive theupper rim 112, as shown in FIG. 4, or thefabric enclosure 114 can be coupled to the rim via straps, snaps, or other fasteners. A front portion of thefabric enclosure 114 that extends between the front andrear legs basket frame 120 by straps, snaps, or other fasteners. In addition, each side of thebasket assembly 100 can include astrap 150 of webbing material that extends from thebasket 110 around therespective arm 122 of thebasket frame 120, as shown in FIG. 4. Thestrap 150 functions to limit movement of theupper rim 112 of thebasket 110 relative to thebasket frame 120 during folding and unfolding of the stroller. - The
upper rim 112 of thebasket 110 can be a wire frame member. Theupper rim 112 includes a pair ofarms 116 and arear cross member 117 extending between thearms 116. Eacharm 116 terminates in ahook 118 adapted to be pivotally mounted to the respective pivots P so that theupper rim 112, and hence thebasket 110, can pivot relative to thepush arms 30 of the stroller frame. Because thebasket rim 112 includeshooks 117 to couple to pivots P, as opposed to being riveted or permanently coupled to pivots P, thebasket 110 can be packaged disassembled from the stroller frame in a compact arrangement for relatively easy post-purchase assembly by the user. In addition to supporting thebasket 110, thebasket frame 120 also can serve to support the seat bottom of thechild seat 50, such as described in U.S. Pat. No. 6,666,473, issued Dec. 23, 2003, which is incorporated herein in its entirety. - The
latch 140 of thebasket assembly 100 is coupled to thebasket 110 and, in particular, to theupper rim 112 of thebasket 110, as shown in FIGS. 5-7. FIGS. 10 and 11 illustrate thelatch 140 in detail. Thelatch 140 is generally U-shaped, and it includes aplate 141 and aresilient spring member 142 opposite theplate 141. Theresilient spring member 142 has alip 143 that is configured to releasably engage the upwardly facingshoulder 136 of thelatch mount 130, as shown in FIG. 12. Thelatch 140 also includes a plurality offlanges upper rim 112 of thebasket 110. More specifically, theupper rim 112 is bent to pass belowflanges 144 a and to pass betweenflanges 144 b, as best seen in FIG. 7, to secure thelatch 140 to theupper rim 112 of thebasket 110. - In the illustrated embodiment, the
latch 140 is an integrally molded plastic piece; however, in an alternative embodiment, the spring member of the latch can be formed as a separate piece that is hinged or otherwise attached to the plate of the latch. In another embodiment, the latch mount may be configured to “spring” over the latch, so that the latch need not include a resilient spring member. - Opening and closing of the
basket 110 will now be described with reference to FIGS. 5-7 and 12. FIGS. 6, 7, and 12 show thelatch 140 in the closed position. To open thebasket 110, a user can rest the palm of a hand against the rear face ofplate 141 of thelatch 140 and curl his fingers around the underside of thelatch 140 to contactresilient spring member 142. By pulling theresilient spring member 142 toward theplate 141, the user disengageslip 143 from the upwardly facingshoulder 136 of thelatch mount 130. Thelatch 140, and hence thebasket 110, then can drop away from thelatch mount 130 to the open position shown in FIG. 5. To close thebasket 110, the user simply needs to lift thelatch 140 toward thelatch mount 130 until theupper surface 145 of lip 143 (see FIG. 10) contacts thelower face 138 of thelatch mount 130. As the user continues to lift thelatch 140, theresilient spring member 142 flexes toward theplate 141, allowing theupper surface 145 to slide past thelower face 138, until thelip 143 clears thelower face 138. Theresilient spring member 142 then resumes its unbiased position, and thelip 143 of thelatch 140 enters thepocket 134 of thelatch mount 130 to secure thelatch 140 to thelatch mount 130. - The
present basket assembly 100 allows a user to access the interior of thebasket 110 when the seat back 52 of thechild seat 50 is partially or fully reclined, for example, as occurs when an infant carrier is mounted to thechild seat 50. In addition, thebasket assembly 100 discourages overloading of thebasket 110. That is, when thebasket 110 is opened, thebasket 110 rotates downward (toward the ground surface on which the stroller rests) and forward (toward the front wheels of the stroller). Accordingly, the size of the basket interior decreases when thebasket 110 is opened and advantageously limits the carrying capacity of the basket. - Although the
basket assembly 100 has been described in connection with a specific type of stroller frame, it will be understood that thebasket assembly 100 can be implemented on strollers having different types of frames, such a jogging strollers, umbrella strollers, non-collapsible strollers, or other collapsible strollers. - The preferred embodiments have been set forth herein for the purpose of illustration. This description, however, should not be deemed to be a limitation on the scope of the invention. Various modifications, adaptations, and alternatives may occur to one skilled in the art without departing from the claimed inventive concept. The true scope and spirit of the invention are indicated by the following claims.
