ters, the numeral Patented June 4, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT `OFFICE l 2,003,998 LACE YOKE AND METHOD OF MAKING THE SAME Solomon Goodman, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application November 23, 1934,
or galeon insert in the iront top oi ladies gari ments such as underslips, nightgowns, and the like, which is commonly formed by stitching two or more pieces of lace together toprodu'ce a decorative design and to obtain the desired shape neel: line. This piecing together of the lace is made necessary for the reason that the lace is usually woven in strip form and the designs are of arbitrary shapes and sizes, and to cut the 'same to a particular neck line shape for use as a lace yoke would necessitate the cutting into the design figures and the repeat units thereof, and results the destruction of the symmetry of the design for the purpose intended.
It is therefore the main purpose of this invention to provide a method whereby a yoke may be formed in a single piece irom a strip of lace, the shape or the neck line being worked in the particular lace design and being of a predeternined length to adapt the yoke for use upon garments oi various sizes.
A Afurther object of the invention resides in a method oi making lace yokes which facilitates the cutting out of identical designed yokes from a single length of lace without undue waste, due to the novel arrangement oi the repeat design units forming the strip oi lace.
@ther objects oi the invention will appear as the following specification is read in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a plan view of a strip oi lace emhodying a plurality of repeat design units from which the lace yokes are formed in accordance with my invention.
Figures 2 and 3 are views similar to Figure 1, but showing steps in the cutting process for forming the yoke.
Figure l is a plan per se.
ure nient with the lace yoke and view of the iinished yoke is an elevational View of a ladys gartrimrning embodied th ein V.erringto the drawing hy reference characlo designates a strip of lace in accordance with rny invention and ncludes a series ci repeat design units. eat design units i l extend inwardly from of the lace strip and those dise side are staggered with respect tending inwardly from the opposite Each design unit iI includes a pronounced Serial No. 754,517
line oi demarkation I2 which extends inwardly from the marginal edge of the lace striprand in the present instance the shape is shown as curved. It is the shape of this line of demarkation which predetermines the style oi neck line o thelace yoke to be formed. rlhe line oi demarkationfIZ divides the design unit into two sections,'namely, a yoke forming section I3 and a trimming section Isl. The sections I3 and Yil! are normally secured together oy the backgroundnetting or stitching-O i5 which may be cut without causing unravelling oi the flower design or other woven design figures which make up the lace design.
After the strip of lace Ill has been formed with a design having the above mentioned design features, the repeat units II may be cut inwardly from opposite sides oi the strip, the neck line of the yoke section I3 being first cut on the line of demarkation i2 as shown in Figure 2 oi the drawing. The yoke section strip along the outline oi the remaining portions or" the design units, there being a space between t'ne design features oi the adjacent repeat units. This operation is shown completed in Figure 3 of the drawing wherein the trimming section I4 and yoke section I3 are shown separated from each other and from the remainder of the lace strip IIJ.
After completion of the cut out operation, any loose threads around the cut out pieces I3 and IA may he trimmed oi to provide a clean edge as shown in Figure 4 wherein the finished lace yoke article or galoon I6 is shown having a curved neck line I'I.
By reason of actual measurements, I have discovered that a span of nine inches across the neck line Il' is adaptable for tting the chest of the average size woman when the yoke is embodied in a ladys garment such as an underslip I8 shown in Figure 5 oi the drawing. In view of the standard measurement, it is unnecessary to weave the lace design repeat units in different sizes, unless the need is one in which the garment to be trimmed is of an unusually large or small size.
In the drawing, I have shown a lace design in which the lace yoke may be cut from opposite` sides of the lace strip without waste, as those extending inwardly irorn one side interfit with those extending inwardly from the other side, and the yoke cut along the dividing line therebetween. However, any waste from cutting may be utilized for additional trimming upon the garment, and in Figure 5, two flower designs I9 are cut from adjoining design units and are shown ior the above purpose. Such use may also be made by the trim- I3 is next cut from the ming piece I4 as a Whole or from portions of the design cut therefrom. In the present instance, the trimming piece I4 is .shown inserted as a whole at the top of the back of the garment I8.
In the trade, it is the practice for the lace manufacturer to make up the same in strip form, and to sell the lace in such form to the garment manufacturers Awho cut the lace into pieces to form various style trimmings for ladies underclothing and night attire. By the use of the method herein shown and described, the garment manufacturei is able to more rapidly cut the yoke from the strip and to more readily visualize the design of yoke at the time of purchaseof the. lace inA strip form. Although I have mentioned that the lace is purchased by the garment manufacturer in strip form and the yokes later cut therefrom, it will be understood that the lace manufacturer or lace dealer may cut the yoke and trimming from the strip and mount them upon mats to be sold to the garment manufacturers as a lace yoke set.
While I have shown and described what I deem to be the preferred embodiment of my invention, I Wish it to be understood that such modifications may be resorted to as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, isz- 1. An article of manufacture comprising a strip of lace material having parallel side edges and provided with a series of repeat designs of predetermined coniiguration Woven therein and dening garment trimming units, each of said units being severable from the strip and having a deiinite line of demarkation extending inwardly from one edge to define a cutting guide along which to sever a segment from the unit to produce a neck yoke, said segment and said neck yoke each embodying a complete design and constituting individual garment trimming elements.
2. An article of manlufacture comprising a strip of lace material havingV parallel side edges and provided with a series of repeat designs of predetermined configuration Woven therein and delining garment trimming units, said units being arranged in staggered relation with the opposite marginal edges of the strip forming part of the marginaledge of adjacent units, each of said units being severable from the strip along their abutting edges and having a definite line of demarkation extending inwardly from one edge to denne a cutting guide along which to .sever a segment from the unit to produce a neck yoke, said segment and said yoke each embodying a complete design for constituting individual trimming elements.
