such doors as commonly employed at the present time the leaves of the door are made to fold so that in warm weather or upon. other occasions when it is desired to provide an open passage through thedoor the leaves may be folded up and the central column of the door with the leaves thereon pushed to one side of the'opem'ng. In Order to accomplish this result the door column is suspended froma trolley running on a track mounted above the ceiling of the door enclosure. -A slot is provided in such ceiling for the door column. One object .of the present invention is to provide a closure for such slot which will be automatically closed when the door is moved to central position and which will open when the .door is pushed to one side. In revolving doors as now constructed it is customary to leave the slot uncovered at all times and this permits drafts "to blow through the ,slot and seriously interferes withthe tightness of the structure.
Another object of the invention is to provide improved latching means for. locking the door -trolley at the limits of its travel, such latching means being so constructed as to automatically engage and latch the trolley in position whenit reaches the ends of its travel and tobe operated by the'swinging movement of the door column to release the trolley when the column is pushed one .way or the other.

. Referring to the drawings in detail 'i's a door .20 tionszl, the ceiling 22 and the floor 23. jInthe ceiling 22-is a. slot 24 for the door column. Mounted abovethe ceiling are channelledrails 25 constituting a track for the door trolley ,26 which is provided with wheels 21 running on the track. Fixed to the track arestops and 3| provided with striker blocks 32 and 33. Mounted on the trolley are latches 34, 35 adapted toengage with the respective striker blocks. The latches. arev pivoted on pins 36 and each is provided with' tan .30 operating arm 3'1. Thedoor comprises a central column 40 on which are pivotally mounted-in any suitable manner a plurality of; leaves 4|, illustrated as four in number. Means areprovided whereby the leaves may be locked in radialposition when the revolving feature of the door is being utilized, such means being well understood and therefore not being illustrated in detail herein. The leaves may also be folded together in any well understood manner so as to permit the door to be movedto one side of the [door opening. For instance, the leaves may be .folded in pairs extending diametrically from the door columnas shown indotted lines inFigureZ. -The column 40 is suspended from thetrolley bymeans of-a A5 block fixed on the column which bears on a suitable anti-friction bearing 46 which is mount- I ed in a carrier member-41. The carrier member '41 is supported on the trolley frame in such manher as to permit of a limited universal movement of the door column so as to permit the latter to 1 after explained. To secure the universal movement described any well known means may be employed. In the construction illustrated, the bearing member 41 is provided with cylindrical bearing surfaces 48 which rest in correspondingly shaped grooves in the gimbal ring or cradle 4.9.-
The gimbal ring or cradle is provided with trunnions 50 which rest in recesses 5| in the side members of the trolley frame. The block 45 and door column are preferably further supported in true Figure 1 so as to tilt the carrier block 4'! and gimbal ring on the trunnions 53. When the door column is swung in the opposite direction a horn 62 carried by the carrierblcck 4'1v is adapted to engage the arm 31 of the other latch 34.
Assuming the door to be in central position in the door housing and the door column to be vertical, the latch 35 will be in engagement with the striker block 33 and the trolley locked incentral position over the door housing. At its lower end the column will be held in central position by the usual bottom pivot 56 fitting in a socket in the floor. If it be desired now to move the door to oneside of the door housing, the leaves will first be folded up as shown in Figures 1 and 2 and the bottom pivot retracted from thefioor socket in the usual manner. The door is then simply pushed towards the right. This will first cause the column to swing to one side as shown in Figure 1 and will bring thecorner 6| of the governor housing into engagement with the latch arm and release the latch 35, whereupon the door and-trolley will move to the right. 'When the door reaches the limit of travel it will be stopped by engagement of the end of the trolley with the striker block 32 and-at the same time the latch 34 will ride over the surface of the striker block and engage behind the same, thereby locking the trolley in its side position. To return the door to central position the door is merelypulled out towards the center whereby at first it will swing to the left and release the latch and then the trolley will move towards the center until the latch 35 engages with the striker block 33. The latching and unlatching of the trolley is thus practically automatic and requires no attention on the part of the operator other than a push or a pull on the door. No special operating mechanism passing up through the door column is required for actuating the latches. The latches also automatically set themselves soas to engage with the respective striker blocks when the door is moved to one side or theother.
v For closing theslot 24 in the ceiling when the door is in its central position, a slot cover 10 is provided which slides on top of the ceiling and is secured thereto by a plurality of links II which are pivoted to the slot cover at I2 and to the ceiling at 13. These provide for parallel motion of the slot cover diagonally across the slot 24. The edge of the slot cover is preferably beveled as indicated at 15 so that it will slide freely over the edge of the slot without catching. The end of the slot cover I0 nearest to the center of the door has attachedtheretc a plate which has.
'the portion of the plate beyond the door column being extended across the slot to provide a finger 'When the door is moved towards the right, column 40 engages with the face of the recess in the plate 80, as shown in Figure 4, and pushes the slot cover towards the right. Owing to its pivotal mounting upon the links 'II this causes the slot cover to be drawn laterally so as to uncover the'slot 24 and permit the door to be pushed to one side. It is thus seen that the slot is covered and uncovered automatically as the door is pushed from its side to its central position and vice versa.
In order that the speed of rotation of the door I may be regulated to a desired maximum, and
spinning prevented, governing means are preferably providedand we have shown in Figures 6,
'l and 8' a preferred form of friction regulating means for this purpose. As here illustrated, the carrier member 4'! of the trolley is provided with a governor housing 60. Fixed on the upper end of the door column 40 is a gear which extends into the governor housing and meshes with a pinion 9| mounted on a shaft 92 supported in a bearing 93 in the lower part of the governor housing and in a bearing 94 in the cover plate of the housing. Also fixed to the shaft 92 is a rotary table I00 which carries the governor mechanism. A pair of brake shoes IIII are provided which are pivoted on pins I02 which are mounted in the table and in bracket plates I03 fixed to the table by means of screws I04 and I05. The
brake shoes are provided with strengthening ribs III] and with surfaces of suitable friction material I I I which engage with the inner surface I I2 of the housing, such surface constituting a stationary brake drum. Centrifugal means are provided for causing the brake shoes to engage the brake drum, such means comprisingthe weights H5 mounted on the ends of levers II6 which are pivoted on pins H1 in the bracket plates I03. The levers II6 are preferably channel shaped, as shown in Figures '7 and 8, and are provided with lugs I20 which engage with lugs I2I on the brake shoes, as shown in Figure 6, whereby the centrifugal force of the weights H5 is applied to the brake shoesin multiplied ratio, depending upon the relative lengths of the lever arms. For holding the brake shoes out of engagement with the brake drum until the desired maximum speed has been reached and in order to regulate such speed, springs I25 are provided which bear against surfaces I26 on the bracket plates I03 and which are connected to the brake shoes by means of rodsI2I engaging pins I28 on the brake shoe ribs III]. The tension of the springs I25 may be adjusted by means of nuts I30 screwing on the ends of rods I21. The springs draw the brake shoes. away from the brake drum until a sufficient speed of rotation is reached to cause the centrifugal force of the weights II5 to overcome the spring tension, whereupon the braking force will be applied and the speed of the door checked. Until this speed is reached no braking effect is produced and the door revolves freely. By adjusting the tension of the springs by means force will be applied may be varied.

In'Figures 9 and 10 wehave illustrated a modified construction of door trolley in which no brake mechanism is provided but having latches and means for operating same in the manner already described. As shown in thesefigures, the main frame of the trolley is similar to that already illustrated, and is provided with latches 34 and 35. The door column 40 carries a block 45 which is mounted on a thrust bearing 46 carried in a modified form of carrier 41a. This carrier 41a is supported in a gimbal ring 49 by means of cylindrical lugs 48 and the gimbal ring is supported by means of trunnions 50 mounted in recesses 5| in the trolley frame as described above. The carrier 41a is provided with a pair of latch actuating horns I40, one or the other of which is adapted to engage with the arm 31 on one or the other of the latch members, depending upon which way the door column is swung. A cover plate I52 is preferably provided on the upper end of the door column so as to protect the bearing 46 from dirt which might fall into the recess in the carrier 41a.
While we have illustrated and described in detail certain preferred forms of our invention, it is to be understood that changes may be made therein and the invention embodied in other structures. We do not, therefore, desire to limit ourselves to the specific constructions illustrated,
but intend to cover our invention broadly in whatever form its principle may be utilized.
We claim:
1. In a revolving door, a door enclosure including a ceiling having a slot therein, a door having a column passing through said slot and having door leaves pivotally mounted upon said column, a trolley mounted above said ceiling from which said column is suspended, and a cover plate for said slot mounted to slide in the plane of the ceiling into and out of position to cover said slot.
2. In a revolving door, a door enclosure including a ceiling having a, slot therein, a door having a column passing through said slot and having door leaves pivotally mounted upon said column, a trolley mounted above said ceiling from which said column is suspended, and a cover plate for said slot movable diagonally across said slot in the plane of the ceiling and actuated by the movement of the door column along said slot so as to open said slot when the door column is moved to one side of the door enclosure and to close said slot when the door column is moved to the center of the door enclosure.
3. In a revolving door, a door enclosure including a ceiling having a slot therein, a door having a column passing through said slot and having door leaves pivotally mounted upon said column, a trolley mounted above said ceiling from which said column is suspended, and a cover plate for said slot movable diagonally across said slot in the plane of the ceiling and actuated by the movement of the door column along said slot so as to open said slot when the door'column is moved to one side of the door enclosure and to close said slot when the door column is moved to the center of the door enclosure, the means for causing said cover plate to be moved comprising parallel links pivoted to said cover plate and to said ceiling and an actuating plate attached to said cover plate and having a finger extending closure.

6. In a revolving door, a door enclosure, a track mounted above the same, a trolley movable on said track, a door column suspended 'from said trolleyby means permitting swinging movement of the door column, door leaves pivoted upon said column, and latch means for locking said trolley in position upon said track, said means being operable by the swinging movement of the door column to unlatch the trolley.
7. In a revolving door, a door enclosure, a track above the same, a trolley travelling on said track, stops fixed to said track adapted to stop said trolley in positions near the side of the door enclosure and near the center thereof, latches pivoted to said trolley and adapted to latch said trolley against one or the other of said stops, a door column, door leaves pivotally mounted on said column, a carrier member for supporting said door column from said trolley, said member having limited universal movement with respect to said trolley, and means on said carrier member adapted to be brought into engagement with one or the other of said latches so as to release the same by a swinging movement of the door column.
8.
