  • This invention relates to a packaging device for semiconductor and electronic components, more particularly to a packaging device adapted for accommodating a tape-type carrier on which the semiconductor and electronic components are attached. [0002]
  • 2. Description of the Related Art [0003]
  • Referring to FIG. 1, in the manufacture of semiconductor and electronic components, a conventional packaging device, which is generally used for storing and transporting the semiconductor and [0004] electronic components 10, is shown to include a tape-type carrier 11 on which the components 10 are attached, a reel 12 for winding the carrier 11, and a protective jacket 13 for accommodating the reel 12. Air in the protective jacket 13 is pumped out to result in a vacuum state. However, the reel 12 is likely to deform, thereby damaging the components 10.
  • To solve this problem, referring to FIG. 2, a [0005] protective band 2 is provided to surround the carrier 21 with semiconductor and electronic components 20 attached thereon and to brace upper and lower plates of the reel 22. An adhesive tape 24 is provided to connect two ends of the band 2. However, the bracing effect that is provided by the protective band 2 is insufficient to prevent deformation of a periphery 221 of the reel 22 in a vacuum state of the packaging device. Moreover, the attachment operation of the adhesive tape 24 on the protective band 2 is inconvenient to conduct.
  • SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
  • The object of the present invention is to provide a packaging device that can accommodate a tape-type carrier on which semiconductor and electronic components are attached without damaging the components in a vacuum state of the packaging device. [0006]
  • According to this invention, the packaging device includes a reel member, a protective band and an engaging member. The reel member includes a hub which extends along an axis in an axial direction to be adapted for winding of a tape-type carrier with semiconductor and electronic components attached thereon and which has upper and lower ends opposite to each other in the axial direction, and upper and lower plates which respectively surround and extend radially and outwardly of the upper and lower ends and which are spaced apart from each other in the axial direction so as to cooperate with the hub to confine an accommodation chamber thereamong that is adapted to accommodate the carrier when the carrier is wound on the hub. The protective band has lengthwise ends opposite to each other in a lengthwise direction, and upper and lower edges which are disposed between and transversely of the lengthwise ends and opposite to each other in a widthwise direction. The protective band has a first flexibility in the lengthwise direction, and a second flexibility in the widthwise direction which is smaller than the first flexibility. The upper and lower edges respectively abut against and extend angularly and along the upper and lower plates so as to enclose the accommodation chamber and brace the upper and lower plates. The protective band is formed as a corrugation which includes ridges and grooves alternately arranged in the lengthwise direction so as to increase abutting areas of the upper and lower edges to the upper and lower plates. The engaging member includes first and second engaging portions which are respectively and integrally formed with the lengthwise ends for engaging each other when the upper and lower edges respectively abut against the upper and lower plates.[0007]

  • Other features and advantages of the present invention will become apparent in the following detailed description of the preferred embodiments of the invention, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: [0008]
  • FIG. 1 is a sectional view of a conventional packaging device; [0009]
  • FIG. 2 is a partly cutaway perspective view of another conventional packaging device; [0010]
  • FIG. 3 is a perspective view of a first preferred embodiment of a packaging device according to this invention when an engaging member is disengaged; [0011]
  • FIG. 4 is a perspective view of a protective band of the first preferred embodiment in an engaged position; [0012]
  • FIG. 5 is a sectional view of the first preferred embodiment; [0013]
  • FIG. 6 is a perspective view of a protective band of a second preferred embodiment according to this invention; and [0014]
  • FIGS. 7 and 8 are schematic views of protective bands of third and fourth preferred embodiments according to this invention, respectively.[0015]
  • DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
  • Referring to FIGS. 3, 4 and [0016] 5, the first preferred embodiment of the packaging device according to the present invention is shown to comprise a reel member 32 made of a rigid plastic material, and a protective band 3 made of a non-rigid plastic material. The reel member 32 includes a hub 322 which extends along an axis in an axial direction to be adapted for winding of a tape-like carrier 31 with semiconductor and electronic components 30 attached thereon, and which has upper and lower ends opposite to each other in the axial direction, and upper and lower plates 321 which respectively surround and extend radially and outwardly of the upper and lower ends of the hub 322 and which are spaced apart from each other in the axial direction so as to cooperate with the hub 322 to confine an accommodation chamber 323 thereamong for accommodating the carrier 31 when the carrier 31 is wound on the hub 322.
  • The [0017] protective band 3 has lengthwise ends 33,34 opposite to each other in a lengthwise direction, and upper and lower edges 35,36 which are disposed between and transversely of the lengthwise ends 33,34 and opposite to each other in a widthwise direction. The protective band 3 has a first flexibility in the lengthwise direction, and a second flexibility in the widthwise direction which is smaller than the first flexibility. Once the carrier 31 has been wound on the reel member 32, the protective band 3 surrounds the carrier 31 such that the upper and lower edges 35,36 respectively abut against and extend angularly and along the upper and lower plates 321 so as to enclose the accommodation chamber 323 and brace the upper and lower plates 321. The protective band 3 is formed as a corrugation which includes ridges and grooves alternately arranged in the lengthwise direction so as to increase abutting areas of the upper and lower edges 35,36 in relation to the upper and lower plates 321. In this embodiment, the protective band 3 has a cross-section in a wave shape. As such, when a protective jacket 37 is provided to accommodate the packaging device therein, and is pumped out of the protective jacket 37 to result in a vacuum state, the bracing effect of the protective band 3 is sufficient to brace the reel member 32 from deformation, thereby preventing damage to the semiconductor and electronic components 30 while maintaining an economical packaging cost.
  • In addition, an engaging member includes first and second engaging portions which are respectively and integrally formed with the [0018] lengthwise ends 33,34. In this embodiment, the protective band 3 is formed with a first slit 331 which is adjacent to the lengthwise end 33 to form the first engaging portion, and which extends from the upper edge 35 toward the lower edge 36 to terminate at a first abutting portion 332, and a second slit 341 which is adjacent to the lengthwise end 34 to form the second engaging portion and which extends from the lower edge 36 toward the upper edge 35 to terminate at a second abutting portion 342. The first and second engaging portions are inter-engaged in the axial direction such that the second abutting portion 342 abuts against the first abutting portion 332. As such, the engaging operation of the lengthwise ends 33,34 is convenient to conduct.
  • Alternatively, as shown in FIG. 6, the second preferred embodiment of a protective band [0019] 4 of the packaging device is shown to have a notch 442 which is formed in one lengthwise end 44 thereof, and a protrusion 432 which is formed on and which extends from the other lengthwise end 43 thereof to be inserted into the notch 442 in a transverse direction relative to the lengthwise and widthwise directions so as to be retained in the notch 442 in the lengthwise direction.
  • Alternately, as shown in FIGS. 7 and 8, the [0020] protective bands 5, 6 can have cross-sections in a square wave shape or in a zigzag shape.
  • While the present invention has been described in connection with what is considered the most practical and preferred embodiments, it is understood that this invention is not limited to the disclosed embodiments but is intended to cover various arrangements included within the spirit and scope of the broadest interpretations and equivalent arrangements. [0021]
