My invention relates to pyrophoric lighting mechanism and to a combined device including mechanism of that character and also including a receptacle for cigarettes, cigars or the like, hereinafter generically termed cigarettes.
My invention, in one of its phases, relates to pyrophoric lighting mechanism per se and particularly to novel arrangements of some of the parts thereof.
Various other objects, advantages and characteristics of my invention will become apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
My invention resides in the pyrophoric lighting mechanism, combined features, arrangements and details of construction of the character hereinafter described and claimed.
For an illustration of one of the forms which my invention may take, reference is to be had to 'the accompanying drawing in which;
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the front surface of a combined pyrophoric lighter and cigarette container;
Figs.'2 and 3, respectively, are elevational views of the side surfaces of the device shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the device shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3;
Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view, partly in.
elevation, and is taken substantially on the line .5-5 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view, partly in elev'ation showing the device of Figs. 1, 2 and 3 with a cigarette receptacle in open position; and
Fig. 7 is a perspective view, in part disassembled, of parts of the operating means for the lighter mechanism.
Referring to Figs. 1-7, C represents a fuel casing container or receptacle for pyrophoric lighting mechanism of any suitable character and Cl represents a casing, container or receptacle adapted to receive a plurality of cigarettes A.
The casing C comprises a bottom wall I and a top wall 2, suitable side wall structure joining said walls I and 2 and herein shown as comprising end walls 3, 3 disposed in parallel relation, if desired, but not necessarily, Fig. 6, and front and rear walls 4, 4 disposed somewhat in converging relation, if desired, but not necessarily, Fig. 5.
Carried by the wall 2 is an upstanding wick tube 5 through which and said wall 2 a wick 6 extends to the interiorof the casing C. Coactable with the wick tube 5 is a snuffercap I carried by a suitable snuffer-cap-carrying member 8 which, in the example shown although not necessarily, is shaped somewhat as an inverted receptacle and comprises depending, spaced side walls 8a, 8a, Fig. 5.
The member 8 is pivoted for oscillatory movement on a pin or axle 9 supported in any suitable (CI. 67-11) v manner above the top wall 2 of receptacle C. As
herein illustrated and preferably but not necessarily, there upstands from the top wall 2 wall structure In of suitable configuration. Said wall structure I is open at the top for the reception of the member 8 and the hereinafter described operating member therefor and forms a chamber in which these members, particularly the latter, are received. The aforesaid pin 9 is carried, preferably, by spaced standards H, II, Fig.
5, upstanding from the top wall 2 and disposedbeing maintained under suitable tension, as by a headed screw i6 coacting therewith and threaded into an opening inthe bottom wall I of easing C.
Rotatable as a unit with the wheel I2 is a ratchet wheel I! by which uni-directional rotative movement is imparted to the wheel [2, as hereinafter described.
Any suitable form of mechanism may be utilized for operating the aforesaid wheels l2 and I1, and for swinging the member 8 about its axis to elevate the snuffer cap 5. As herein disclosed, a manually actuatable knob 18 is utilized for this purpose, said knob l8 being carried by a member l9 reciprocatory in a barrel member 20 open at its top and depending into the casing C, said knob l8 and member l9 being biased in an upward direction, Fig. 6, by a helical spring 2i disposed in said barrel member 20.
The knob l8 comprises spaced, vertically extending members l8a, l8a extending toward the pin 9 and formed at their ends with racks which mesh, respectively, with pinions 22, 22 freely rotatable on the aforesaid pin 9.
In accordance with a feature of my invention, the pinions 22, 22 are of greater thickness than the members Ha, I So which are associated, respectively, therewith and said pinions 22, 22 are disposed, respectively, in permanent meshing relation with toothed segments 81), Fig. 7, formed in each depending wall 8a of the member 8, said toothed segments 8b being disposed near the end of said member 8 removed from the snuffer cap 1.
With the parts in assembled relation, the pinions 22, 22 are disposed immediately adjacent the respective standards II, II on the interior surfaces thereof as illustrated particularly in Fig. 5. Between the pinions 22, 22, the wheels l2 and I! are disposed, the pin 9 passing through all of said pinions and wheels to form the pivotal axis ends of the members Isa, l8a mesh, respectively, with the pinions 22, 22, each of the latter being maintained in permanent meshing relation with a toothed segment 8b of the member 8. Accordingly, when the knob I8 is' depressed, the member 8 is swung in a clockwise direction, Fig. 6, and when said member I 8 rises under the influence of spring 2 I, the member 8 retums to its normal position such as indicated in Fig. 6 where the snuffer cap I coacts with the wick tube 5 to form a housing for the upper end of wick 8.
Any suitable arrangement may be utilized for operating the wheels I2 and I1 in response to depression of the knob l8; In the example shown but not necessarily, there is thus utilized a member 23 having a resilient extension 23a coactable with the ratchet wheelll. Asherein illustrated,
the member 23 is secured to the member 8 and interiorly thereof by the stem of the snuffer cap' 1 which passes through both of said members and is headed exteriorly of said member 8.
Accordingly, when the knob I8 is depressed to produce clockwise movement of member 8, Fig. 6, the ratchet wheel l1 and serrated wheel 12 are v rotated in a similar direction due to the pawlwith respect to the ratchet wheel H, the wheels I2 and I1, accordingly, remaining stationary particularly because .the pyrophoric element I3 is biased into engagement with said wheel l2.
Fuel of any suitable character, either solid, semisolid or liquid may be introduced into the casing C in any suitable manner. If desired and as illustrated, one end wall 3 of said casing C may be provided with a perforation threaded for the reception of a plug or cap 24 which, when removed, permits the introduction of fuel interiorly of said casing C, the latter, if desired, con-- taining a mass 25 of suitable'material, as cotton, for absorbing the fuel.
In accordance with my invention, the herein described container Cl comprises mating sections R, Ra, each adapted to contain a plurality of cigarettes A. Each of these sections may be and preferably is of open, receptacle-like configuration, the section R, preferably, being formed integrally with the casing C. When thus formed integrally, itiis desirable that the bottom wall 26 of section R be formed substantially as a continuation of the rear wall 4 of casing C and that the end walls 2], 21 thereof be formed substantially as continuations respectively of the end walls 3, 3;of said casing C, said end walls 21, 21 being joined by a wall 28 to complete the section R.
. The section Ra conforms substantially with the sectionR and, therefore, comprises a bottom, wall 29, end walls 30, 38, said end walls being joined by a lower wall 3| and an upper wall 3 la.

When tlius arranged, the racks at the pose and as herein illustrated, the adjacent walls 21 and 30 of the respective sections R and Ra may be provided with sets of spacedperforated ears which are brought into alinement and connected together by a pin or member 32 which passes through all of said ears. When the section Ra is closed upon the section R, the end walls 38, 30 thereof come into alinement with the end walls 21, 21 of the section R; similarly, the lower wall il of section Ra comes into alinement with the lower wall 28 of section R while the upper wall 3 la of said section Ra fits snugly beneath the bottom wall I of the fuel casing, Fig. 5. Any suitable mechanism may be utilized for retaining the sections R, Ra in closed position. As herein shown, there is utilized for this purpose a spring latch 38 carried by the section R and having a part coacting with the section Ra.
As herein shown, it is desirable that the cigarettes Abe releasably retained in each of the sections R and Ba. For this purpose, there may be associated with the respective sections R and Ra members 84, 34a preferably of sheet-like, lightweight resilient material, said members being disposed for pivotal movement about the pin 32. Preferably each of the members 34, 34a is biased into engagement with the cigarettes A in the respective sections and for this purpose, springs 35, 350. may be coiled about the pin 32 and associated with the respective members 34, 3flav each spring having an end which, as illustrated,'engages and biases the associated member 34 or 34a in the proper direction.
,The receptacle -Ra, preferably, is biased to open position with respect to the receptacle R and, for this purpose, the aforesaid springs 35, 35a may be utilized, the arrangement being such that movement of the section Ra to closed position causes said springs to be wound or energized.
The herein described casing structure is formed of any suitable material; usually, however, sheet material, particularly sheet metal is employed and it is desirable, although not necessary, that visible surfaces be suitably plated or otherwise ornamentally finished.
While the invention has been described with respect to a certain particular preferred example which gives satisfactory results, it will be understood by those skilled in the art after understanding the invention, that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention and it is intended therefore in the appended claims to cover all such changes and modifications.
