Description

' May 28, 1935. T, J, ANDERSON 2,002,683
WINDOW Filed OGC. 29, 1931 fj'g 14 fbg;
l a I7 /3 /5 lf /a Patented May 28, 1.935 i UNITED sTATEs PATENT oFFlc v WINDOW l Torval J. Anderson, Chicago, Ill. Application october 29, 1931. serial N0.\571,793
c claims. (c1. ,2o- 11) i This invention relates to improvements in window construction, comprising upper and lower sashes, and more particularly to the removable upper stiles of the frame.
An object of the invention is to provide a window frame with removable'upper stiles, in order that it may be changed to any nished wood desired. Y
One object of the invention is to provide a window whereby the removable stiles and part-` ing stops may be removed with the means for counter-balancing the sashes in operative position.
Another object is to provide a window frame which is more simple, better looking, and in which the weights, sash pulleys and cords are more conveniently accessible by removing the upper side stiles.
Another object is to provide a window frame with removable side stiles in order to extend the pockets higher in the frame to avoid any visible joints for the pockets in said stilesV above the top of bottom sash.
One feature of the inventionis to extend the sash pulleys into the pocket of the frame to provide access to the back and to the inner ends of the sash cords on the back of said pulleys to simplify the proper ad justment of the sash cords by connecting the inner ends of the sash cords to the weights ad-V `jacent the lower ends of the pulleys after the other ends of said sash Vcords have been connected to the sash and the sashes lowered to rest on the sill of the frame.
The advantages of the invention will more fully appear as I proceed with the specifications In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a front view'oi ing my invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view showing the removable side stile in position.
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken a Window embodyon line 3-3 of Figure l.
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view With the removable side stile removed showing the pockets and means for counter-balancing the sashes in position in the well of the frame.-
Figure 5 is a view of the removable side stile.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the window'frame comprises two even spaced side stiles 6 and upper removable side stiles 6a, a top lintel 1, a sill 8, and a stool 9. y The side stiles 6, which are securely fastened, extend from the sill 8 to the top of the lower sash Whenthe lower sash side of said pulleysY 2@ is in a closed position. The upper ends of the side stiles S are provided with rabbets adapted to receive one end of the removable side stile 6a, the other end ofsaid removable stiles fits into a groove in the top lintel 1. To fur- 5 ther support theremovable side stiles Ga, the outer casings I6 and inner casings il are provided with rabbets into which the edge of the side stiles 6ft are adapted to register. See Figures yl and 3.
2-l2a denote the longitudinal grooves in the side stiles E-ta for the reception oi the parting stops ICB-i3d respectively. Near the lower ends or" the parting stops I3a is a screw I4 which serves to hold the removable side stiles 6a in 15 place. The outer casing I5 on the opposed outer edges of the side stiles co-operate with the parting stops to form guide-ways or channels I6 for the upper sash Il. I8 designates the inner stops which co-operate with the parting stops V to form guide-ways or channels I9 for the lower sash 2Q. In the sash channels lli-I9 the side stiles 6 are provided with vertically opposed sash cord grooves 2| extending from the sill to the upper end of the side stiles. The upper removable side stiles Ga, are made to co-operate with grooves 2| to provide free passages for the sash cords 22 on the back Vof the side stiles to the pulleys. See Figures 1 3.
The pulleys 23 are mounted on the top lintel 30 'l adjacent the back side of the upper side stiles 6a. `The sash cords 22 or its equal are secured in suitable manner to the bottom rail of lower sash 2G and to the meeting rail of the upper sash il.
It is noted that the means for counter-bal-A ancing the sashes are not connected to the 'removable s ide stiles in order that the whole section of the side stiles,V extending from the top of the bottom sash to the lintel on the frame, 40
and parting stops may be removed with said means left in operative position, and the pockets extended higher in the stiles, which makes the pulleys, sash cords and weights more conveniently accessible.
While I have herein shown and particularly described the preferred embodiment of my invention, its is to be understood that minor changes may be made in the details thereof without departing from the spirit and scope oi my invention as claimed.
I claim: i
1. In a window frame construction, a lintel on said frame, sash pulleys mounted on said lintel sash cords mounted on said pulleys, side stiles provided with sash cord grooves on said frame, pockets extending from the top o1" said side stiles to said lintel, removable side stiles adapted to cover said pockets, said removable side stiles provided with passages on the back side thereof and adjoining the top of said grooves to form continuous passages to said pulleys.
2. In a window frame construction, a lintel on said frame, upper and lower sash between the side stiles on said frame, sash pulleys, sash cords on said pulleys, one end of said sash cords connected vto said sash, weights for counter-balancing said sash connected at the other end of said sash cords, a removable side stile extending from the top of said side stile to said lintel to provide a pocket to give access to said pulleys, weights and to said ends of said sash cords connected to said weights with said upper and lower sash lowered to the sill on the frame.
3. In a Window frame construction, a lintel on said frame, upper and lower sash between the side Stiles on said frame, sash pulleys mounted on said lintel in the well of said frame, sash cords on said pulleys, one end of said sash cords connected to said sash, Weights for counterbalancing said sash connected at the other end of said sash cords, a removable side stile (proivided With a parting stop) extending from the top of said side stile above said sash cords on said pulleys to said lintel, to provide a pocket to give access to said pulleys, weights and to said ends of said sash cords connected to said weights,
for the adjustment of said sash cords on said weights, with said sash lowered to the sill on the frame.
4. In a window frame construction, a lintel on said frame, side stiles, a pocket in said frame abo-ve said side Stiles, a removable side stile eX- tending from the top of said side stile (flush with the face side) over said pockets to said lintel to provide a plane unbroken surface on the face of said removable side stile to the top of said frame.
5. In a window frame construction, a well in said frame, side stiles, a pocket to said well eX- tending from said side stiles to the lintel on said frame, sash pulleys connected to said lintel in said well and extending into said pocket, a removable side stile extending over said pulleys in said pocket to provide access to said pulleys.
G. In a window frame construction, a well in said frame, side Stiles, a pocket to said well extending from said side Stiles to the lintel on said frame, sash pulleys connected to said lintel in said well and extending into said pocket, a removable side stile estending from the top of said side stile (flush with the face side) over said pulleys in said pocket to said lintel to give access to said pulleys and to provide a piane unbroken surface on the face of said removable side stile from the top of said side stile to the lintel on said frame. e
