, This invention relates to a specimen supporting and clamping device for a testing machine particularly the type illustrated in the co -pending application, Serial No. 193,481, filed May 23, 5. '1927 which has matured in Patent No. 1,878,193
dated September 20, 1932, of which I am one of the joint inventors, and has for its object to pro- -v1'de an arrangement by which the specimen may be positioned in the machine without distortion 10 thereof. 'Another object of this invention is the provision of means for engaging and supporting the specimen which may be removed from the machine to permit the specimen to be positioned thereon without distortion and thenmounted in the machine, thus avoiding pulling the specimen or'sample into the machine with likelihood of distortion. v Another object of thisinvention is the provision of quick clamping means for securing the specimen mounted between the separable supporting members in position in the machine.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a clamping means which uponrelease will be removed from clamping position.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of guide means to more accurately direct the movement of the relatively movable head members, one of which supports the specimen and the other of which supports the device to apply pressure to the specimen.
With these and otherobjects and advantageous features in view, the invention consists of a novel arrangement of parts more fully disclosed in the detailed description following, in conjunction 'with the accompanying drawing, and more particularly set forth in the appended claims.

. Fig. 1 is a front elevation 'of the relatively movable head members of a ball bursting testing machine, such as disclosed in the above mentioned patent application, with my improved features mounted thereon;

It-is found in the use of a burst testing machine such as -disclosed in the above mentioned application, that in placing sheer specimens between the clamping members that they are often pulled and distorted so that in the use of specimens the N warp and Weft threads-are at various angles to one-another rather than at right angles as producedin'the finished specimen, which will affect the accuracy of the test'applied to the specimen; and in order to avoid this result, I have provided removable plates between which a speci men such as fabric to be tested may be mounted by merely laying the specimen on one'of the plates and then positioning the other plate thereon, after which the plates with the specimen between them are positioned in the machine for the test which eliminates the possibility of distortion by pulling the specimen into the machine; also, I have provided a quick acting clamping arrangement operated by a cam 'againstja coil spring by which the plates are securelyjheld in position, and which when released willrise by means of the spring to permit the plates to be quickly removed for insertion of another specimen; and I have further found that I may elongate the tubular support for the ball which applies pressure to the specimen and utilize this elongated support as a guide to centralize the relatively moving heads and provide for more accurate movement thereof; and the following is a detailed description of the present embodiment of this invention, illustrating the preferred means by which these advantageous results may be accomplished. With reference to the drawing, I0 designates the cross bar of the relatively stationary head member which is provided with upright guide rods H-secured together by an upper cross bar l2 and from which an, upright tubular support l3 extends provided with a ball or sphere M at the top for applying pressure to the specimen. The relatively movable head member consists of a lower cross bar I5 from which extend upwardly guide rods 16 through openings in the crossbar ill and which have mounted on their upper ends a U-shaped member I! guided by meansjof suitable openings in the ear portions I8 there-- of upon the guide rods ll. This memberis provided with a deck plate if! having an opening 29 therein and a recess 2| surrounding the. opening to receive a pair of clampplatemembers 2 2 and 23 between which the specimen or fabric 2! to be tested is positioned.
The plate members are circular in shape, being provided with an opening 25 also circular, forming the same annular in shape. The inner surfaces of each of the members are corrugated as at 26 to provide a better frictional gripping surface of the specimen 24, and these members are provided with centering means consisting of a V-shaped annular groove 21 in the member 23 and a plurality of conical or pointed pins 28 in the member 22 to extend into this V-shaped groove to center the plates one with reference to the other and cause their openings 25 to register.
In use, one of the plates is laid upon a suitable support and the specimen is laid upon the plate, whereupon the other plate is then laid over the specimen and the same is thus held without possible distortion from pulling, after which the two plates held together by the hand of the operator are placed on the deck plate IS in the groove 2| and are clamped on the deck plate by'a yoke 29 forced downwardly through the rod 38 by means of the cam 3i operated by handle 32 engaging the abutting head 33 thereof. A spring 34 engages beneath the abutment head 33 and acts between the same, and the abutment 35 on the brace member 36 of the U frame I! tending to force the rod, 30 and the yoke 29 carried thereby upwardly. The position of the yoke on the rod 353 may be adjusted by means of the set nuts 31 and 38 engaging the threaded portion 39 of this red on, either side of the portion 460i the yoke head.
In order that the relative movements of the heads may befurther guided than by the upright rods, arms 4| extend from the deck plate 19, and are provided with rolls or disks 42 to engage the elongated support 13 in a plurality of points three, four or more about the same to centrally guide the relative movements of the head and assist the guiding action of the rods u. and i6 which slide through portions thereof, as above mentioned.
While. I have described certain construction forms which embody the principles of my invention, it is obvious that other desired changes inarrangement may be made within. the spirit and. the scope of the invention as. defined in the ap nded. claims.

A specimen supporting device for a testing machine comprising two relatively movable head members, one of which receives the specimen sheet to be tested, and the other of which is provided with pressure applying means to engage, the specimen com-prising an elongated support extending at right angles to the plane of the specimen sheet as received by said specimen receiving head member, and means provided on the specimen receiving; head member for engaging said supportand guiding the relative movement of said head members.
24A specimen supporting device for a testing machine comprising two relatively movable head members, one of which receives the specimen to be tested, and the other of which is provided with. pressure applying means to engage the specimen comprising i an elongated tubular support extending centrally thereof, and a plurality of arms; on thepspecimen receiving head member,
each arm being provided with a roll to engage said supportiand assist in guiding the relative movement of said head members.

A specimen supporting device for a testing machine comprising two relatively movable head members, one of which receives the specimen to be tested, a deck plate on said last-mentioned head member having an opening therethrough, a pair of removable specimen clamp members on said plate having registering openings therein, means carried by the clamp members for centering said clamp members with reference to each other, means for centering said members with reference to said deck plate opening, and means on said head member to secure the clamp members in position.

A specimen supporting device for a testing machine comprising two relatively movable head members, one of which receives the specimen to be tested, a deck plate on said last-mentioned head member having an opening therethrough, a recess about said opening, a pair of removable specimen clamp plates fitting in said recess, means on said head member to secure the clamp plates in position, and means for centering said clamp plates with reference to each other comprising recess means on one of said clamp plates, and projections on the other clamp plate to extend thereinto,

A specimen supporting, device for a testing machine comprising two relatively movable hea members, one of which receives the specimen to be tested, a deck plate on said last-mentioned head member having an opening therethrough, a pair of removable specimen clamp members on said plate having registering openings therein, means carried by the clamp members for centering said clamp members with reference to each other, a yoke member, means for guidingsaid yoke member toward and from said deck plate,
and reciprocating means for moving said yoke member toward said plate. I q

A specimen supporting device for a testing machine comprising two relatively movable head members, one of which receives the specimen to be tested, a deck plate on saidlast-mentioned head member having an opening therethrough, a pair of removable specimen clamp members on said plate having registering openings therein, means carried by the clamp members for centering said clamp members with reference to each other, a yoke member, means for guiding said yoke member toward and from said deck plate, a spring for raising said yoke member, and cam means for moving said yoke member toward said-plate for binding action.

A Specimen supporting device for a testing machine comprising two relatively movable head members, one of which receives thespecimen sheet to be tested, and the other of which is provided with pressure-applying,means to ensaid support and guiding the relative movement of said head members. 8.
