' p ,Claims. (01. 25-131) invention relates to improvements in means for holding the walls of concrete casting forms in operative-assembled relation.
ln the setting :up of forms to receive cast con crete, especially in connection with theproduction of concrete walls and like structures of specified width, it is desirable'to secure opposed form walls in spread or spaced apart relation against both inward and outward displacement. This is usually accomplished by means of transverse tie-rods extending between the form walls,
to the ends of which tie-rods are coupled or secured exterior-1y projecting bolt rods, which are utilized with suitable holding means to secure externally applied battens and-walers in supporting relation to the exterior faces of the form walls. After the concrete material is poured into the form and allowed to set, it is necessary to remove the projecting bolt rods. This is done by disconnecting the inner ends of the same from coupled relation to the tie-rod, and thereupon withdrawing the bolt rods from the hardened concrete. Such operation involves considerable labor, owingto the-freezing of the set concrete to the bolt-rods, especially where the latter are screw-threaded to engage a coupling means by which attachment thereof to the tierod is effected; and not only this, but not infrequently the bolt-rod is broken ofi, or so-bent and distorted during the removing operation, that it cannot be used again, which is'undesirable from considerations of economy. To overcome such difficulties, and to provide an arrangement of iorm wall holding means which is both efiicient and economical because the exterior parts and bolt-rods may be eas-ilyandquickly removed with a minimum expenditure of time and labor,and without risk of any such injury thereto as will defeat the possibility-of their {i0 repeated use, is the principal object of this invention. To this end, thepresent invention'provides a removable sleeve adapted to be inserted through the form wall and slidable overthe'bolt rodso .as to cover and protect ,the interior end of the latter leading to the tie-rod coupling means, thereby shielding the bolt rod from ,contact ,Withtthe concrete material poured into the form; said sleeve having an external squared end for application of a twisting wrench; thereto when it is d sired to. loosen the same, and bei further provided with :means whereby :it .can :be

The invention has for a further object to provide a novel coupling means cooperative with the tie-rod, bolt rod and protector sleeve, having means for rendering desired wall spacing or spreading operations easy and quick of accomplishment.

The reference character 28 indicates a bolt-rod having a threaded inner end2l; and a threaded outer end 22. Slidably mounted on the bolt-rod 20 is a protector and spacing sleeve 23. Preferably the sleeve 23 is provided witha tapered or conical inner end 2&- of predetermined length, and at the juncture of said conical end with the main body of the sleeve there is provided an external indicating mark 25 adapted to be registered in alignment with the inner face of the form wall it. The sleevemay also be provided with additional marks 26 spaced outwardly from the mark 25 at various distances corresponding to the thickness of various sizes of form wall material or boards selected for particular forms.

At or adjacent to its outer end, the sleeve is provided with flat angularly related wrench engageable faces 30, whereby a wrench or other suitable tool may be applied thereto for manipulating the same when it is desired to be loosened from operative position. If desired,
the outer end portion of the sleeve may be providedwith' oppositely extending lateral handle arms 3! to facilitate handling of the same.
It will be observed from an inspection of the drawing, that, when the sleeve 23 is slid inwardly over the bolt-rod 29 into operative relation to the form wall ill and to the tie-rod l3 and its coupler N3, the sleeve entirely envelops the inner end of the bolt-rod which penetrates the form interior to operatively engage the tierod coupler l6, thus protecting or shielding such portion ofthe bolt-rod from contact with the concrete material, when the latter is poured into the form.
When the bolt-rod and sleeve are operatively related to the form wall Ill and to the tie-rod I3 and its coupler It, a flanged nut 32, or other suitable fastening device, is engaged with the outer end of the bolt-rod so as to abut the walers i2, thus securely holding the form wall against outward displacement.
In the species of sleeve .23. above described, the same comprises aone-piece substantially cyclindrical element. In Fig. 6, however, there is shown a modified species of sleeve which is split longitudinally, as at 33 to provide two cooperating halves 34 and 35, which may be released and withdrawn from the form wall and removed from the bolt-rod before the latter itself is disconnected.
In the use of the novel form holding means, after the concrete material 36 has been poured but before it has fully set to final hard condition, the nails holding the sleeve 23 are with-. drawn, and the sleeve is loosened and retracted or, when of split form as shownin Fig. 6, withdrawn. This is done by applying a wrench to the outer end of the sleeve and twisting the same. The sleeve will readily be loosened by such-twisting inview of the fact that this may be done while the concrete is still somewhat green. When loosened the sleeve is retracted Without disturbi g the form supporting relation of the interconnected bolt-rod and tie-rod. After theconcrete has aged sufficiently to have become fully hardened (which may be several days after pouring), the bolt-rods 28 may be turned out of the couplers IE and withdrawn, so that the form walls may be removed. Inasmuch as the sleeves 23 initially protected or shielded the bolt-rods from contactwith the concrete material, the same, may, at this time, be easily and quickly removed, without risk of distortion, breaking or other injury thereto, and also without risk of injury, chipping or cracking of the concrete. As a consequence of this the bolt-rods may be used over and over again, thus effecting an economy in form building which is very desirable.
Another advantage of the novel form holding means of this invention, lies in the fact that the elements of the same are so constructed i and related, that they may be passed through theform walls from the outside thereof when assemblingthe same, which is of considerable convenience especially in the erection of narrow forms wherein access to the interior is difficult.
I am aware that various changes could be made in the above described constructions, and many apparently widely diiferent embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof as defined in the following claims; hence it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. r
I claim:--
1. In concrete form holding means, an internal tie-rod, an exteriorly projecting bolt rod, a coupler means to join said tie-rod and bolt-rod, and a sleeve loosely slidable over said bolt-rod, said sleeve being adapted to penetrate a form wallfrom the exterior thereof to cover the inner end portion of said bolt-rod between the form wall and saidcoupler means.
2. In concrete form holding means, an internal tie-rod, an exteriorly projecting bolt-rod, a coupler means to join said tie-rod and boltrod, a sleeve loosely slidable over said bolt-rod, and said sleeve having a tapered inner end portion adapted to penetrate a form wall and abut said coupler means to thereby protect the interiorly disposed portion of said bolt-rod from contact with concrete material poured into said form.
3. In concrete form holding means, an internal tie-rod, an exteriorly projecting bolt-rod, a coupler means to join said tie-rod and boltrod, a sleeve loosely slidable over said bolt-rod, said sleeve having a tapered inner end portion adapted to penetrate a form wall and abut said coupler means to thereby protect the interiorly disposed portion of said bolt-rod from contact With concrete material poured into said form,
and means to hold said sleeve in predetermined relation to the form wall.
4. In concrete form holding means, an internal tie-rod, an exteriorly projecting bolt-rod, a coupler means to join said tie-rod and boltrod, a sleeve loosely slidable over said bolt-rod, said sleeve having a tapered inner end portion adapted to penetrate a form wall and abut said coupler means to thereby protect the interiorly disposed portion of. said bolt-rod from contact with concrete material poured into said form, said sleeve having wrench engageable means on its exterior end portion.
5. In concrete form holding means, an internal tie-rod, tie-rod coupler means, a removable bolt-rod adapted to pass through a form wall into attached relation to said tie-rod coupler means, a sleeve loosely slidable over said boltrod, said sleeve having a tapered inner end portion adapted topenetrate a form wall to abut said coupler means and cover that portion of the bolt-roddisposed between the form wall and said coupler means, and means to secure said sleeve in afiixed predetermined relation to said form wall and cooperatively with said tierod and coupler means to dispose the form wall in spaced relation toran opposed wall.
6. In concrete form holding means, an internal tie-rod, tie-rod coupler means, a removable bolt-rod adapted to pass through a form wall into attached relation to said tie-rod coupler means, a sleeve loosely slidable over said boltrod, said sleeve having a tapered inner end portion adapted to penetrate a form wall to abut said coupler means and cover that portion of the bolt rod disposed between the form wall and said coupler means, and means to secure said sleeve in affixed predetermined relation to said form wall and cooperatively, with said tie-rod and coupler means to dispose the form wall in spaced relation to an opposed wall, said sleeve having external indicating marks registrable with the exterior surface of the penetrated form wall to indicate the desired cooperative relation of the inwardly projecting portion of said sleeve with said tie-rod and coupler means.
7. In concrete form holding means, i an internal tie-rod, tie-rod coupler means, said coupler means having an opening in its side and positioning of said coupler means relative to said tie-rod, a removablebolt rod adapted to pass through a form wall into attached relation to said tie-rod coupler means, a sleeve loosely slidable over said bolt-rod and through the form wall to abut said coupler means and to cover that portion of the bolt-rod disposed between the form wall and said coupler means, said sleeve being manipulatable from the exterior of the form whereby the same may be loosened from the concrete cast into the form without disturbing the form holding relation of the bolt-rod.

In concrete form holding means, an internal tie-rod, tie-rod coupler means, said coupler means having an opening in its side and external register marks to facilitate the desired positioning of said coupler means relative to said tierod, a removable bolt-rod adapted to pass through a form wall into attached relation to said tie-rod coupler means, a sleeve loosely slidable over said bolt-rod and through the form wall to abut said coupler means and to cover that portion of the bolt-rod disposed between the form wall and said coupler means, said sleeve being manipulatable from the exterior of the form whereby the same may be loosened from the concrete cast into the form without disturbing the form holding relation of the bolt-rod, and means to secure said sleeve in aifixed predetermined relation to said form wall and cooperatively with said tie-rod and coupler means to dispose the form wall in spaced relation to an opposed wall. 1

In concrete form holding means, an internal tie-rod, tie-rod coupler means, said coupler means having an opening in its side and external register marks to facilitate the desired positioning of said coupler means relative to said tie-rod a removable bolt-rod adapted to pass through a form wall into attached relation. to said tie-rod coupler means, a sleeve loosely slidable over said bolt-rod and through the form wallto abut said coupler means and to cover that portion of the bolt-rod disposed between the form wall and said coupler means, said sleeve being manipulat-' able from the exterior of the form whereby the same may be loosened from the concrete cast into the form without disturbing the form holding relation of the bolt-rod, and means to secure said sleeve in aflixed predetermined relation to said form wall and cooperatively with said tie-rod and coupler means to dispose the form wall in spaced relation to an opposed wall, said sleeve having external indicating marks registrable with the exterior surface of the penetrated form wall to indicate the desired cooperative relation of the. inwardly projecting portion of said sleeve with said tie-rod and coupler means.

In concrete form holding means, retaining members comprising a member wholly within the form interior and a second member extending through the form wall into detachably coupled connection with said interior member, a sleeve loosely slidable over said second member to project through the form wall in covering 1 relation to the interiorly disposed portion of said second member. external register marks to facilitate the desired SAMUEL S.
