Abstract

A Portable Tool Organizer is provided that provides for the transport and storage of a wide variety of tools, equipment, parts, etc., and also houses a spool for dispensing line of different types within the frame. The frame has a cutter assembly attached that has a pivoting portion with a sharpened cutting edge that cuts the spooled out line when the pivoting portion scissors with respect to the remaining cutter assembly. The cutting edge has several semi-circular notches into which the line is nestled and positioned for cutting as the cutter assembly is closed by pushing against a thumb rest on the pivoting portion. Two aligned rows of receptacles have top openings and extend within the frame. The rows are stepped to assist in access and visual identification of the tools, etc. that extend from the receptacles during ordinary storage and transportation. A closed compartment for parts, etc. is at the top of the frame and has a hinged lid. An exterior compartment, having two tool receptacles is attached to the frame left side, along with a tool retention shelf having several apertures sized to receive the handle of common hand tools. Tool retention straps are attached to the frame right side for securing similar tools. The frame right side also has three posts with enlarged extended ends for insertion into tools with drilled handles. The device has a handle for carrying and rear recesses for wall mounting in trailers or in buildings.

  • The present invention relates generally to a storage container and, more specifically, to a tool storage container having a variety of storage compartments and tool retention means, all proximate a spool of line in a spoolwell, and near a cutter assembly. [0003]

  • There are other storage containers designed for the storage and maintenance of tools and other industrial devices. Typical of these is U.S. Pat. No. 4,034,760 issued to Amirsakis on Jul. 12, 1977. [0005]
  • Another patent was issued to Tolentino on Apr. 16, 1985 as U.S. Pat. No. 4,511,040. Yet another U.S. Pat. No. 4,557,389 was issued to William et al. on Dec. 10, 1985 and still yet another was issued on Arnold to Sep. 1, 1992 as U.S. Pat. No. 5,143,228. Yet another U.S. Pat. No. Des. 282,235 was issued to Pendleton on Jan. 21, 1986. [0006]

  • A compact case for displaying and storing cutlery or related articles. The case includes a container with a forward display portion and a rear storage portion, separated by a divider. A series of storage blocks for carrying cutlery are positioned within the rear storage portion, and cutlery support frames are mounted on the divider.   • Still yet another object of the present invention is to provide a portable tool organizer that may have a handle attached thereto for the means of hoisting or carrying the portable tool organizer to a selective position. [0016]
  • Additional objects of the present invention will appear as the description proceeds. [0017]
  • The present invention overcomes the shortcomings of the prior art by providing a storage container that may house a plurality of industrial tools, selectively house spooled materials, and have means for selectively mounting the storage container to a vertical flat surface. [0018]
  • The present invention is a portable tool organizer box. The portable tool organizer consists of a main enclosure having a closed storage bin with a hinged lid, open-topped tool receptacles, a handle, tool retention straps, a tool retention shelf with apertures therein, a cutter assembly with a pivoting portion and a fixed portion, a spool pin mounted within a spoolwell.   • The main enclosure is a modified box shaped structure having a stepped top surface. The main enclosure is furnished with a plurality of storage compartments and retention means. [0020]
  • The main enclosure provides housing for the storage of a plurality of tools, especially those related to landscaping such as trimmer line, edger and lawnmower blades. The main enclosure is sturdy to accommodate for a variety of tools yet lightweight for easy manipulation when the portable tool organizer is being carried by hand. [0021]
  • The main enclosure is also furnished with a series of wall mounting apertures on the rear. The mounting apertures provide the means for the portable tool organizer to be selectively mounted to a wall. The mounting apertures work in conjunction with pre-existing fasteners whereby the portable tool organizer can be removably attached to a structure. The user may selectively mount the portable tool organizer onto the pre-installed nail or screw via the mounting apertures. [0022]
  • The main enclosure is further furnished with a series of tool compartments. The tool compartments are sectional chambers that house a variety of tools. The tool compartments may be of a particular depth to accommodate irregular tools and equipment. [0023]
  • The storage bin is a small sectional compartment that provides the housing and storage means for small components that are easy to lose yet hard to find. The storage bin is accessible by opening the hinged lid. [0024]
  • The handle resembles that of any conventional handle that is manufactured in industry, and provides the user of the portable tool organizer with the means for carrying or moving the portable tool organizer to a selective location. [0025]
  • The tool retention strap is attached to the main enclosure and provides the user with the means for retaining a tool that could not be placed in any of the tool compartments or the storage bin. Also the tool retention strap provides the user of the portable tool organizer with an additional position to store tools or equipment. [0026]
  • The tool retention shelf has apertures and is a horizontal extension of the main enclosure located on the left side of the portable tool organizer. The tool retention shelf provides the user of the portable tool organizer with yet another additional position to store tools or equipment. [0027]
  • The hanging posts are cylindrical flanged structures that extrude from the right side of the portable tool organizer. The hanging posts provide the user of the portable tool organizer with a position to hang tools or equipment having holes drilled in handles or tie straps. [0028]
  • The cutter assembly is a rectangular shaped structure having a pivoting portion and a fixed portion, the fixed portion having a sharpened edge. The pivoting portion is also furnished with a series of semi-circle shaped notches that secure the line being cut as the pivoting portion scissors with the fixed portion. Also, the pivoting portion has several apertures that are sized to allow insertion of the spooled line, thus positioning the line for cutting during the scissoring motion. [0029]
  • The spool pin is a cylindrical shaped structure that is located in the spoolwell of the portable tool organizer. The pivoting cylinder provides the housing means for spooled line material (e.g. wire, edger trimming line, cable, rope, cord, etc.). The spool pin is pivotally attached at one end on a pivoting bracket, within the spoolwell and, when the free end is moved from the spoolwell, a means is provided for the user to selectively load and unload spools of material onto the spool pin. When the spool and spool pin are pivoted back into the spoolwell, the free end of the spool pin is secured in the spoolwell by engaging a spool pin retainer, which is a threaded member that interfaces with the spool pin and locks it into its functioning position via a hole in the side of the main enclosure.   • An individual having a portable tool organizer may selectively store and access tools and equipment needed for performing a particular job. The individual may mount the portable tool organizer to a building wall or in a utility trailer via industrial peg walls, nails, or screws. The user of the portable tool organizer may perform his or her job easier due to the added convenience and prompt access to his tools. [0031]
  • A device is provided for securing tools and a spool of the type containing line material, the device comprising: a frame having a plurality of receptacles and a spoolwell; a spool pin mounted within the spoolwell, the spool pin being sized and positioned for rotatably mounting the spool within the spoolwell; and a cutter assembly for cutting the spooled line, the cutter assembly having a first portion and a second portion, the second portion being pivotally attached to the first portion for scissoring, at least one of the first or second cutter assembly portions having a cutting edge.   • In another embodiment of the foregoing device, the second portion has a bottom edge, the bottom edge having at least one notch for retaining the line between the first and second portions during the scissoring motion. [0033]
  • In another embodiment of the foregoing device, the at least one notch is generally semi-circular. [0034]
  • In another embodiment of the above device, the number of cutting edge notches is two or more. [0035]
  • In another embodiment of the above device, the second portion has a cutting edge, the cutting edge having at least one notch for retaining the line between the first and second portions during the scissoring motion. [0036]
  • In another embodiment of the above device, the cutter assembly second portion further comprises a thumb rest, the thumb rest being positioned such that a force applied to the thumb rest forces the second portion into the scissoring motion. [0037]
  • In another embodiment of the above device, the cutter assembly first portion has a cutting edge, and the cutter assembly second portion further comprises a plurality of holes, the holes being of various sizes for inserting line of various diameters, thus positioning the line to encounter the first portion cutting edge during the scissoring motion.   • In another embodiment of the above device, the frame further comprises a storage compartment, the storage compartment having a hinged lid and an opening, such that access is provided to the storage compartment through the opening when the lid is open. [0039]
  • In another embodiment of the above device, the spool pin further comprises a first end and a second end, the spool pin second end being removably attached to the frame such that the second end can be alternately attached an unattached, the spool pin first end being pivotally attached to the frame such that when the second end is unattached the spool pin may be moved into a position to insert the spool pin second end into the spool.   • In another embodiment of the above device, the frame receptacles further comprise a first and second plurality of receptacles, such receptacles having openings, the first plurality and second plurality being positioned on the frame such that the first plurality receptacle openings are stepped with respect to the second plurality receptacle openings.   • In another embodiment of the above device, the device further comprises a tool retaining member, the tool retaining member being attached to the frame, the tool retaining member having at least one aperture. [0042]
  • In another embodiment of the above device, the frame further comprises a retaining strap, the retaining strap having a first and second end, the first and second ends being attached to the frame and spaced such that the attached retaining strap and frame form an enclosure for tool insertion.   • DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
  • Turning now descriptively to the drawings, in which similar reference characters denote similar elements throughout the several views, FIGS. [0082] 1-10 illustrate the Portable Tool Organizer of the present invention indicated generally by the numeral 10.
  • The [0083] device 10 is shown generally in FIGS. 1-10, and in use in FIGS. 1-3. The device 10 is affixed to a utility trailer 12 in FIG. 1, and an building interior wall 14 in FIG. 3. The user 16 is shown hand-carrying the device 10, in FIG. 2.
  • A [0084] spool 18 of line 20 is mounted on the device 10. The line 20 can be any number of materials, such as wire, cable, rope, cord, string, etc.
  • Various tools [0085] 22 are shown, including tools with handles 24, and tools such as the small spade 26, which have a drilled handle 28.
  • The [0086] device 10 includes a frame 30 having a front side 32, rear side 34, left side 36, and right side 38, as shown in FIGS. 4-9. The frame 30 can be constructed from various woods, metals or plastics, all in accordance with the present invention, and as determined by the intended end use for the overall device 10, as will occur to those of skill in the art upon review of the present disclosure.
  • The [0087] frame 30 includes a spoolwell 40 that totally or partially encompasses the spool 18. Within the spoolwell 40 is a spool pin 42 that is hingedly attached to the frame left side 36 using pivoting bracket 43 and pivoting bracket pin 44. A removable spool pin retaining member 45 is insertable through the frame right side 38 and into the spool pin 42, thus securing the spool pin 42 within the spoolwell 40.
  • By removing the spool [0088] pin retaining member 44 the spool pin 42 may be pivoted into position for receiving one or more spools 18. After insertion of the spool 18 onto the spool pin 42, the spool pin 42 is returned to a position where it can receive the spool pin retaining member 44, thus securing the spool pin 42 in a manner such that the spool 18 can be rotated about the spool pin 42 within the spoolwell 40.
  • Attached to the frame [0089] right side 38 is a cutter assembly fixed portion 46 to which a pivoting portion 48 is attached at pivot pin 50? The fixed portion 46 has a sharpened cutting edge 52, although either or both portions 46,48 can include the sharpened edge. The pivoting portion 48 has several semi-circular notches 54 and various apertures 56 that are of various sizes that correspond with typical line 20 gauges. A thumb rest 58 is also attached to the pivoting portion 48.
  • When an appropriate amount of [0090] line 20 is taken from the free-wheeling spool 18, the pivoting portion 48 is moved to an open position, and the line 20 can be routed between the cutter assembly pivoting portion 48 and the fixed portion 46. After so routing the line 20, the user 16 pushes against thumb rest 58 causing the pivoting portion 48 to scissor with respect to the fixed portion 46. The line 20 is held between such portions 46,48 as the line 20 nestles into one of the notches 54. The line 20 is cut completely as the pivoting portion 48 is pushed into the closed position.
  • Alternately, the [0091] line 20 is inserted through the appropriately sized apertures 56, wherein it is positioned for the scissoring motion of the pivoting portion 48 with the fixed portion 46. As the pivoting portion 48 is pushed into the closed position the line 20 is completely cut.
  • As shown in FIGS. 4, 5 and [0092] 9, the device 10 has a closed storage compartment 60, with a lid 62 attached by hinges 64. When the lid 62 is opened on such hinges 64, access is provided to the contents of the otherwise closed compartment 60. Although hinges 64 are used in this preferred embodiment, the compartment 60 can be closed by other devices such as a completely removable lid, a lid attached by a cord, and other similar devices, all in accordance with the present invention, and as determined by the intended end use for the overall device 10, as will occur to those of skill in the art upon review of the present disclosure.
  • Open-ended [0093] receptacles 66 extend generally downwardly into the frame 30 interior, as shown in FIG. 9. In this embodiment, two aligned rows of receptacles 66 are provided, with the rows being stepped such that inserted tools 22 and equipment are readily identifiable from a front or side view, as shown in FIG. 3. The receptacles 66 are sized such that a wide variety of tool handles 24 can be readily inserted.
  • An open-topped exterior compartment [0094] 68 is attached to the frame left side 36, as shown in FIG. 5. The compartment 68 has two receptacles 70 for receiving tools 22, lawnmower blades 72, and other equipment. In this preferred embodiment 10, the width of the receptacles 70 are relatively shallow to correspond with substantially planar equipment such as the lawnmower blades 72, thus preventing an inordinate amount of motion of the lawnmower blades 72 within the receptacles 22 during transport.
  • Also attached to the frame left [0095] side 36, is a tool retention shelf 74 with apertures 76 or receiving tool handles 24. As shown in FIG. 5, the tool retention shelf 74 is positioned at an appropriate distance above the exterior compartment 68, allowing optimal use of both features.
  • In providing a complete selection of tool and equipment retention features, the [0096] device 10 also includes two tool retention straps 78 attached to the frame right side 38, such that tool handles 22 and other equipment can be inserted between the strap 78 and the frame right side 38. The straps 78 can be either inelastic or resilient and can also be of typical metal bracket construction.
  • Furthermore, positioned at an appropriate distance below the tool retention straps [0097] 78, are three flanged posts 80, that are attached to the frame right side 38, and positioned such that drilled handles 28, on tools such as the small spade 26 shown in FIG. 3, can be inserted on the posts 80.
  • As shown in FIG. 2, the [0098] device 10 is readily transportable by hand, using the attached handle 82. For either permanent or temporary wall storage, as shown in FIG.1 and FIG. 3, the device 10 has recesses 84 on the frame rear side 34 that can be used to hang the device 10 on any number of typical wall fasteners and industrial peg boards. The vertical array of such recesses 84 allows the device 10 to be selectively positioned to suit the height requirements of the user's particular installation.
  • Although the figures depict a highly efficient arrangement of the storage and retention features such as the [0099] receptacles 66, the tool retention straps 78, the exterior compartment 68, the posts 80, and the tool retention shelf 74, other numbers and configurations of one or more of the features are also possible, all in accordance with the present invention, and as determined by the intended end use for the overall device 10, as will occur to those of skill in the art upon review of the present disclosure.
  • It will be understood that each of the elements described above, or two or more together may also find a useful application in other applications differing from that described above. [0100]
  • While certain novel features of this invention have been shown and described and are pointed out in the annexed claims, it is not intended to be limited to the details above, since it will be understood that various omissions, modifications, substitutions and changes in the forms and details of the device illustrated and in its operation can be made by those skilled in the art without departing in any way from the spirit of the present invention.   • Without further analysis, the foregoing will so fully reveal the gist of the present invention that others can, by applying current knowledge, readily adapt it for various applications without omitting features that, from the standpoint of prior art, fairly constitute essential characteristics of the generic or specific aspects of this invention. Claims (36)

What is claimed as new and desired to be protected by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claims:
1. A device for securing tools and a spool of the type containing line material, the device comprising:
a frame having:
a plurality of receptacles;
a spoolwell;
a spool pin mounted within the spoolwell, the spool pin being sized and positioned for rotatably mounting the spool within the spoolwell; and
a cutter assembly for cutting the spooled line, the cutter assembly having a first portion and a second portion, the second portion being pivotally attached to the first portion for scissoring, at least one of the first or second cutter assembly portions having a cutting edge.
2. The device of claim 1, wherein the second portion has a bottom edge, the bottom edge having at least one notch for retaining the line between the first and second portions during the scissoring motion.
3. The device of claim 2, wherein the at least one notch is generally semi-circular.
4. The device of claim 2, wherein the number of cutting edge notches is two or more.
5. The device of claim 1, wherein the second portion has a cutting edge, the cutting edge having at least one notch for retaining the line between the first and second portions during the scissoring motion.
6. The device of claim 1, wherein the cutter assembly second portion further comprises a thumb rest, the thumb rest being positioned such that a force applied to the thumb rest forces the second portion into the scissoring motion.
7. The device of claim 1, wherein the cutter assembly first portion has a cutting edge, and the cutter assembly second portion further comprises a plurality of holes, the holes being of various sizes for inserting line of various diameters, thus positioning the line to encounter the first portion cutting edge during the scissoring motion.
8. The device of claim 1, wherein the frame further comprises a storage compartment, the storage compartment having a hinged lid and an opening, such that access is provided to the storage compartment through the opening when the lid is open.
9. The device of claim 1, wherein the spool pin further comprises a first end and a second end, the spool pin second end being removably attached to the frame such that the second end can be alternately attached an unattached, the spool pin first end being pivotally attached to the frame such that when the second end is unattached the spool pin may be moved into a position to insert the spool pin second end into the spool.
10. The device of claim 1, wherein the frame receptacles further comprise a first and second plurality of receptacles, such receptacles having openings, the first plurality and second plurality being positioned on the frame such that the first plurality receptacle openings are stepped with respect to the second plurality receptacle openings.
11. The device of claim 1, further comprising a tool retaining member, the tool retaining member being attached to the frame, the tool retaining member having at least one aperture.
12. The device of claim 1, wherein the frame further comprises a retaining strap, the retaining strap having a first and second end, the first and second ends being attached to the frame and spaced such that the attached retaining strap and frame form an enclosure for tool insertion.
13. The device of claim 12, wherein the number of retaining straps is at least two.
14. The device of claim 12, wherein the retaining strap is resilient.
15. The device of claim 1, further comprising at least one post, the post being attached to, and extending from the frame.
16. The device of claim 15, wherein the number of posts is two or more.
17. The device of claim 15, wherein the at least one post is flanged.
18. The device of claim 1, further comprising at least one exterior compartment, the at least one exterior compartment being attached to the frame.
19. The device of claim 1, further comprising a handle, the handle being attached to the frame.
20. The device of claim 1, further comprising means for transporting the device by hand.
21. The device of claim 1, wherein the spoolwell is positioned on the frame such that the spool extends beyond the frame.
22. The device of claim 1, wherein the spoolwell is positioned on the frame such that the spool does not extend beyond the frame.
23. The device of claim 1, wherein the frame further comprises at least one rearwardly facing aperture.
24. A device for securing tools and a spool of the type containing line material the device comprising:
a frame having:
a plurality of receptacle means;
means for accepting a spool;
spool retention and rotation means such that the spool is rotatably mounted within the frame spool acceptance means; and
means for cutting the spooled line, the cutting means being attached to the frame.
25. The device of claim 24, wherein the cutting means further comprises line retention means for retaining the line while cutting.
26. The device of claim 24, wherein the cutting means further comprises a first portion and a second portion, the first portion being pivotally attached to the second portion, and means for inserting the line through the second portion for cutting.
27. The device of claim 24, wherein the frame further comprises closed storage means.
28. The device of claim 24, further comprising spool insertion means.
29. The device of claim 24, further comprising exterior tool retaining means attached to the frame, the tool retaining means having at least one aperture.
30. The device of claim 24, wherein the frame further comprises retaining strap means for tool retention on the frame.
31. The device of claim 31, wherein the retaining strap means is resilient.
32. The device of claim 24, further comprising post means, the post means being attached to, and extending from the frame.
33. The device of claim 24, further comprising at least one exterior compartment means, the exterior compartment means being attached to the frame.
34. The device of claim 24, further comprising means for transporting the device by hand.
35. The device of claim 24, further comprising means for securing the device to a wall.
36. A device for securing tools, comprising:
a frame having:
a plurality of receptacles;
a spoolwell;
a spool of the type holding line material;
a spool pin mounted within the spoolwell, the spool pin being sized and positioned for rotatably mounting the spool within the spoolwell; and
a cutter assembly for cutting the spooled line, the cutter assembly having a first portion and a second portion, the second portion being pivotally attached to the first portion for scissoring, at least one of the first or second cutter assembly portions having a cutting edge.
