- This application is a continuation-in-part of U.S. patent applications Ser. No. 08/665,256, entitled Lean-to Scaffold System, filed on Jun. 17, 1996, of Robert M. Phillips, and Ser. No. 29/083,791, entitled A-Frame Tripod Truss for a Scaffold, filed on Feb. 9, 1998, of Robert M. Phillips, now U.S. Pat. Des 433,761, and Ser. No. 09/619,620 entitled A-Frame Tripod Truss for a Scaffold filed on Jul. 19, 2000, which are incorporated herein by reference.
- In the parent application, Ser. No. 08/665,256, entitled Lean-to Scaffold System, the invention is directed to a three point collapsible scaffold system for mounting a temporary platform supported on the ground adjacent structure. More specifically the present invention is directed to the inventive combination of a collapsible scaffold with extendable three point support members which permit the two ground support point members to be adjustable spaced apart from a structural wall.
- In the present application, the invention is directed to a novel flat folding scaffold hinged, pivoting connections which permit collapsing the unit in combination with a shrubbery shelter and staging platform. In particular the invention is directed to a flat folding scaffold, with hinged, pivoting connections which permit collapsing the unit, in combination with shrubbery shelter means. The shrubbery shelter comprising a plywood member used as a shelter for outdoor plants, attached to the scaffold frame member by platform lock-and-shelter clips supported by the ground support member. The present application provides adequate structural support for supporting heavy loads on the staging platform in addition to heavy loading of the shelter with construction waste.
- The present invention relates to a three point collapsible scaffold system for mounting a temporary platform and shrubbery shelter supported on the ground adjacent structure. More specifically the present invention is directed to the inventive combination of a collapsible scaffold with extendable three point support members which permit the two ground support point members to be adjustably spaced apart from a structural wall having hinged, pivoting connections which permit collapsing the unit.
- Scaffolding is well known and commonly employed by people who desire to perform work such as repair, painting or reconstructing buildings. Applicant is aware of prior art including the following U.S. Patents which relate to scaffolding devices. One such device is shown in patents to Riegel, Jr., Middleton et al., Ireland, and Holm. In particular Ireland shows a collapsible staging without anchoring clips, and Middleton shows clips. Middleton shows a method and apparatus of scaffolding during building with a folding hanger and work frames, storable bumpers on the wood frame for propping the scaffold off the wall and a hanger from suspending the scaffolding from above, typically from the cap or upper header of a building wall. Another device is shown in U.S. Pat. No. 4,738,335 to Ishii and shows a hook devices for hanging from a parapet wall, for repairs on an outer wall.
- A common problem for homeowners with expanding needs is the high costs of purchasing a new home, many homeowners are electing to have their homes resided or repainted. Many of these conservative individuals prefer to employ professional contractors rather than struggling to complete such large tasks by themselves. One of the most important aspects of remodeling a home is to ensure that existing features such as bushes, shrubs, and flower beds are not harmed through the activity. Today it is not uncommon to have upwards of $20,000 invested in landscaping much of which surrounds the house. Other critical goals, from a contractor's point of view, are to make sure that the customer is satisfied while still making a profit from such hard work. To this end, the utilization of scaffolding is compulsory for siding, painting, and even window replacement. Scaffolding allows more surface area to be completed at one time than by using ladders. However, while scaffolding is relatively effective, it is very time consuming to erect in a manner to insure the platform is structurally safe and sound, and to move from one section of a structure to another. In addition, ordinary scaffolding can be quite difficult to use around complex architectural features. Clearly, if a new type of support was offered, both the contractor and homeowner would benefit which shows a method and apparatus of scaffolding during building with a folding hanger and work frames, storable bumpers on the wood frame for propping the scaffold off the wall and a hanger from suspending the scaffolding from above, typically from the cap or upper header of a building wall.
- Despite the teachings of the prior art, there has not been of a three point collapsible scaffold system having hinged, pivoting connections which permit collapsing the unit. In the present invention the applicant is specifically claiming the criticality of the three point collapsible scaffold system, focusing on the hinged, pivoting connections which permit collapsing the unit three point collapsible scaffold system. The present invention is useful for mounting a temporary platform supported on the ground adjacent structure, which is extendible easy to erect, readily adjustable for safe and secure leveling as well as quickly moveable, and provides good protection for existing flower beds and shrubs under the scaffolding. The present invention permits this by incorporation of an extendible three point members to provide quick-leveling. The metallic frame segments have a tripod configuration and when mounted on the ground and leaned against an adjacent vertical wall with plywood sheet attached protect various landscape improvements, which overcomes some of the shortcomings of the prior art and provides for fast, safe and economical installation.
- A further problem identified by the applicant is that roofing contractors typically must build a chute over delicate flowers and shrubs for providing for diversion and disposal of construction waste. To provide such a chute a contractor must take 2×4 beams, cut them up, nail them to the building to make a frame with braces so that you have something to nail the plywood panels to. It takes over an hour, plus lumber cost. Applicant's solution is to provide a structurally sound yet foldable temporary scaffold platform supported on the ground adjacent structure, which is extendible easy to erect, readily adjustable for safe and secure leveling as well as quickly moveable, and with plywood sheet(s) attached, provides good protection for existing flower beds and shrubs under the scaffolding.
- The invention will be described for the purposes of illustration only in connection with certain embodiments; however, it is recognized that those persons skilled in the art may make various changes, modifications, improvements and additions on the illustrated embodiments all without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
- The present invention is directed to novel flat folding scaffold combination with shrubbery shelter means and staging platform. This scaffold comprises a plurality of at least two a-frame tripod trusses for supporting said staging platform adjacent a structure, each tripod having metallic structural segments wherein said structural elements are joined by novel hinged, pivoting connections which permit collapsing the unit to a flat folding scaffold. The a-frame segments include removable cross bracing providing a stand alone three point support with two ground supports and one wall support, each having extension devices for providing a stable footing on uneven surface. The shrubbery shelter means comprises a plywood member used as a shelter for outdoor plants, attached to the scaffold frame by combination platform lock-and-shelter clips supported by the ground support member such that the scaffold provides adequate structural support for supporting heavy loads on the staging platform in addition to heavy loading of the shelter with construction waste.
- More particularly each a-frame tripod truss for a scaffold consists of at least two metallic frame segments, each segment configured to be leaned against the vertical wall, being securely mounted in place without fasteners such as nails driven into the wall. Each frame segment includes a three point support including a triangular ground support “A” frames with removable transverse rung members for forming a ladder, and one wall support, each support member having adjustment means for moving extendable support pads between an extended position and a retracted position. In the present invention, leveling of the platform members is easily accomplished as adjustable feet are included for providing a stable footing on uneven surfaces, as well as adjustable wall supports for greater stability.
- As a Roofing Contractor sometimes I have to build a chute over delicate flowers and shrubs for providing for disposal of construction waste. To take the roof off you have to take 2×4 beams, cut them up, nail them to the building to make a frame with braces so that you have something to nail the plywood panels to. It takes over an hour, plus lumber cost. No more! You take three a-frame truss segments, put the planks on them between the lock clips and combination platform lock-and-shelter clips to form a staging platform, just nail the plywood through the nail aperture of the combination platform lock-and-shelter clips and you have your chute. It takes about fifteen minutes. Pop the plywood off and your staging is already there so you can start roofing right away. No clean up, no damage to the building. And with my time saved they're paying for themselves. After a couple of jobs, now they're making money for me.
- Same with working on a dormer check. Take two frame segments, a plank and tack down the plywood. Instant ramp. Now for the first time you can set a level staging using two different walls! Take your standard ranch with an attached garage, You extend one frame segment to the main house and the second to the garage, now you can work on the front and side of the area at the same time. On top of that both hands are free.
- As a painting contractor take three frame segments and stage out the front of the house. You can blow out the high work in half the time because you don't have to move a ladder. Saving me production time, making money for me again! Just because I have them.
- You can take two frame segments straddle a bay window and paint all three sides because you're right there, again no equipment to move.
- And the list goes on and on.
- The bottom line on the “Lean-to.”
- 1. It's faster;
- 2. It's better;
- 3. It's safer;
- 4. And it's designed to make money for the contractor.
- The present invention is constructed from aluminum frame segments and removable cross bracing. It is triangular in appearance with retractable extensions protruding from its uppermost surface. The triangular shape with bracing offers the necessary structural rigidity for carrying heavy loads. The extensions are supported by an additional brace which attaches to one of the legs. A locking clip and combination platform lock-and-shelter clip are provided which are an integral part of the extensions. With the extensions secured in a horizontal position, the clips can be used for anchoring a staging platform. When used as a shelter for outdoor plants during construction, scrap pieces of plywood can be placed over the sides of the frame segment and anchored by supporting the plywood sheet against two or more combination platform lock-and-shelter clips. Both legs incorporate adjustable feet for providing a stable footing on uneven surfaces. With the cross braces removed, and the extensions folded, the frame segment collapses into a compact, easily transportable unit.
- Obtaining quality results in a reasonable amount of time is the goal of every professional contractor. Prior to beginning work, however, rigid protection must be installed for exterior vegetation. Also, materials and tools must be brought to a height where work can be sustained. The frame segment performs these functions well and is one accessory that anyone remodeling a home should have.
- Accordingly, the primary object and purpose of the present invention is to provide a new and improved flat folding scaffold in combination with shrubbery shelter means wherein said shrubbery shelter means comprising a plywood member used as a shelter for outdoor plants, attached by combination platform lock-and-shelter clips supported by the ground support member providing adequate structural support for supporting heavy loads on the staging platform in addition to heavy loading of the shelter with construction waste.
