A pedestal cavity 30 is formed between the first andsecond pedestal jaws first pedestal jaw 26 includes aninclined face 32 and thesecond pedestal jaw 28 includes aninclined face 34. - A
saddle 35 is adapted to be located within the pedestal cavity 30. A plurality ofresilient coil springs 36 extend between thesaddle 35 and thepedestal 24 such that thepedestal 24 is resiliently supported by thesprings 36. Abearing 37 and anaxle 38 of a wheel set is coupled to thesaddle 35 such that theaxle 38 is rotatable with respect to thesaddle 35. A plurality offriction wedges 39 having wear surfaces formed of composite material and steel or acicular iron, are resiliently biased by one ormore springs 36 into engagement with thepedestal 24 and thesaddle 35 to dampen vertical movement of thepedestal 24 with respect to thesaddle 35. - A
wear member 40 is removably attached to the inside surface theinclined face 32 of thefirst pedestal jaw 28 and awear member 40 is also attached to the inside surface of theinclined face 34 of thesecond pedestal jaw 28. Thewear member 40, as best shown in FIG. 2, includes a generallyrectangular wear plate 42 having atop edge 44, abottom edge 46, and spaced apart and generally parallel first andsecond side edges 48 and 50 which extend between the top andbottom edges wear plate 42 includes a generally planarfront friction surface 52 and a generally planarrear surface 54 which is generally parallel to thefriction surface 52. Thewear plate 42 includes one ormore apertures 56 which may be conical or countersunk. Thewear plate 42 is preferably formed from cast iron which has a kinetic coefficient of friction with steel or acicular iron of approximately 0.15. - The
wear member 40 also includes a backing member 60 which may be attached to therear surface 54 of thewear plate 42 by an adhesive or the like. The backing member 60 extends generally coextensively with therear surface 54. The backing member 60 is preferably formed from a sheet of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) that is approximately one millimeter thick. The backing member 60 includes anexterior surface 62 and one ormore apertures 64 which are respectively aligned with theapertures 56 in thewear plate 42. The backing member 60 is adapted to be placed adjacent theinclined face pedestal 24 to accommodate any surface irregularities in the cast surface of theinclined faces rear surface 54 of thewear plates 42 and theinclined faces wear plate 42 with thepedestal 24. - Forming the
wear plate 42 from cast iron which has a kinetic coefficient of friction with the steel or acicular iron of thefriction wedge 39 of approximately 0.15, as opposed to forming thewear plate 42 from steel which has a kinetic coefficient of friction with the steel or acicular iron of thefriction wedge 39 of approximately 0.30, promotes generation of a lower axle centering force. Axle centering forces act horizontally toward the center of the axle at curves in the railroad track and are generated by surface forces between thefriction wedge 39 and thewear member 40. When the axle centering force can be decreased, the forces generated at the wheel/rail interface that are needed to move the axle are also lower and self-steering of the wheel is promoted. Lower self-steering forces are particularly required at laden. High resistance to self-steering can be caused by use of steel wear plates. In addition, wearplate 42 from cast iron has a better damping capacity than a steel wear plate, making the suspension less prone to generating noise. - The
saddle 35 of therailcar truck 20 as best shown in FIG. 4 extends between a first end 70 and asecond end 72. Thesaddle 35 includes a center post 74 having a generallyhorizontal roof 76, afirst side wall 78 that extends downwardly from theroof 76 to abottom end 80, and asecond side wall 82 that extends downwardly from theroof 76 to abottom end 84.
