The inner facing ends oftray assemblies guide rods 62 which extends in theslot 25 betweenrails latch assembly 100 employed for each of thetray assemblies - Each of the latch assemblies include a
latch receiver 140 integrally molded of a suitable polymeric material, such as ABS, for example, and includes a generally vertically extendingwall 142 and asocket 145 defined byedges wall 142 for receivingtangs pushbutton 102 to captively and slidablymount pushbutton actuator 102 toreceiver 140.Wall 142 includes an outwardly extendingflange 148 which allows the mounting ofreceiver 140 to thefloor 52 of slidingplate 50 by means of fasteners extending throughapertures 147 inflange 148 with the lower end ofwall 142 extending through mountingslots 54 infloor 52 of slidingplate 50. Thelatch bar 104 is captively held topushbutton actuator 102 within receivingslots 106 with thebar 104 being urged in an upwardly latching position by means of compression springs 110 which extend betweenledges 112 at the bottom of slots defined byedges receiver 140 and thetangs pushbutton actuator 102 to urge thepushbutton actuator 102 into a raised position, as seen in FIGS. 5 and 6. This urges latch bar 104 (which has a length which extends between the inner sides ofsides 36 ofhousing halves rails 21 and 23) to selectively engageslots 29 in theupper rail 23 whentrays Additional notches 29 can be provided for latching the trays in intermediate positions if desired. - The
vertical wall 142 ofreceiver 140 includes a pair of integrally formedresilient tabs 149 which engage top surface ofhorizontal wall 108 oncepushbutton actuator 102 is inserted within theslot 145 defined byedges pushbutton actuator 102 withinreceiver 140. Thus, oncelatch assemblies 100 are preassembled withmembers assemblies 100 are secured to the slidingplate 50 for each of thetray assemblies latch bars 104 intoslots rods 62 throughapertures 52 intotrack 25 by installingtop rail 23 to attach the slidingplate 50 andlatch assemblies 100 tohousing 20. - The
pushbutton actuator 102 includes atop actuator surface 103 which extends through and is generally flush withaperture 128 intray 120, as best seen in FIGS. 5 and 6, when theactuator bar 104 is in a latched position in one of thenotches 29. When theactuator 102 is depressed downwardly as seen in FIGS. 7 and 8,latch bar 104 is depressed downwardly in a direction indicated by arrow A in FIGS. 7 and 8 to release fromslots 27 allowing thetrays Aperture 128 defines, as best seen in FIGS. 7 and 8, a finger recess for allowing the operator to easily slide thetray assemblies -
Base 30 is mounted to latch assembly 80 (FIG. 3D) which, in turn, releasably mountsconsole 10 to thefloor 12 of a vehicle by means of the socket 90 (FIG. 4) mounted permanently in the floor of the vehicle.Socket 90 comprises a moldedpolymeric member 92 having a pair ofsemicylindrical sockets pins 94 extending across therecesses apertures 97 in side walls thereof for receiving latch bars oflatch assembly 80 as described below. A pair of pivoted covers 96, which snap or detent into the closed position, extend over and enclosesockets console 10 is not installed to the floor of a vehicle.Covers 96 include pivot pins 95 which extend within apertures inhousing 92 and are captively held in position at an opposite end by means of akeeper bar 98 secured tohousing 92 by conventional fastening means. -
Latch assembly 80 includes a spring-loaded slidinglatch plate 82 slidably mounted to astationary housing 84.Plate 82 includes two pairs of spring-loadedlatching dogs latch arm assembly 85, as described in detail in the above-identified patent application Ser. No. 09/222,261, such that latch dogs 86 and 88 selectively extend downwardly and engage pins 94. Whenlatch arm assembly 85 is released, this allowsplate 82 under the force ofcompression spring 81 engagingboss 83 onhousing 84 andtab 81′ onplate 82 to move latchingpate 82 in the direction indicated by arrow B for holding theconsole 10 tofloor 12 of the vehicle. Whenlatch arm assembly 85 and particularlyactuator member 85′ is depressed, plate 82 slides in a direction opposites arrow B, thereby causing latchingdogs pins 94, allowing the console to be removed entirely from the vehicle floor. The use of pairs of latchingdogs pins 94, provides secure locking of the console to the vehicle floor for preventing detachment of the console in the event of a collision. - Thus, the console assembly of the present invention provides the flexibility of allowing a console to be removably mounted to a vehicle floor and provides sliding trays permitting access to a central storage area, which may include a removable bag. The sliding
trays open sides 37 of theconsole housing 20 may be selectively enclosed by panels (not shown), if desired, to provide anenclosed storage compartment 22 with thestorage container 24 removed therefrom. - It will become apparent to those skilled in the art that these and various other modifications to the preferred embodiment of the invention as described herein can be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
