The retainingholes 34 are formed along an outer periphery of theplate 3. Thegroove 35 is formed in thefirst side surface 30, and extends from thefront end 31 of theplate 3 to therear end 33 of theplate 3. The limitingelements 38 extend respectively from the left and right sides (32L, 32R) toward each other, and define an open front end (35F) of thegroove 35 between theplate 3 and thelimiting elements 38. Thesmart card 20 is disposed at a retracted position shown in FIGS. 5 and 9, where afront end 21 of thesmart card 20 extends from the open front end (35F) of thegroove 35 and where aspace 39 is present between arear end 22 of thesmart card 20 and a closed rear end (35R) of thegroove 35. As illustrated, therear end 22 is spaced apart from the rear end (35R) at only a small distance. Theplate 3 is generally rectangular, and has two long sides, two short sides, and acurved notch 115 formed in one of the short sides, thereby facilitating insertion of thesmart card 20 into thegroove 35. On two sides of thecurved notch 315, two inclined guidingfaces 313 are formed on thefirst side surface 30 of theplate 3, thereby further facilitating the insertion of thesmart card 20 into thegroove 35. - The
integrated circuit board 4 includes afirst side surface 41, and asecond side surface 43 that is opposite to thefirst side surface 41 and that abuts against thefirst side surface 30 of thebase plate 3. Thebase plate 3 and theboard 4 are adapted to be disposed generally parallel to thesmart card 20. Theboard 4 further includes a plurality ofpin holes positioning holes 456, a plurality ofpositioning notches 457, and a plurality ofterminal pins 47 that are fastened to thefirst side surface 41 and that are in electrical contact with aribbon cable 48 for data transmission. The cable is attached to theboard 4, and is in electrical connection with an electronic device (not shown), such as a mother board of a computer. The positioning holes andnotches projections 37 of thebase plate 3, thereby positioning theboard 4 on theplate 3. Thepins 47 extend through thepin holes second side surface 43. - The card-ejecting
device 5 includes a metalmovable member 51, which is formed with anintegral positioning element 511 that is shaped as a plate and that is parallel to theplate 3. As such, when thesmart card 20 is pressed inwardly in thegroove 35 in a longitudinal direction of theplate 3, themovable member 51 moves synchronously with thesmart card 20. When thesmart card 20 is located at the retracted position shown in FIGS. 5 and 9, themovable member 51 is disposed at a first position, whereresilient contacts 471 of thepins 47 are in electrical connection with a conductive plate 201 of thesmart card 20. - The
cover plate 7 is made of a metal, and includes afront end 71, anopening 72, arear end 73, an integralpressing arm 75, twointegral side walls 76, and a plurality ofclamping sheets 77 that engage respectively the retainingholes 34 in thebase plate 3 and that are straight before assembly of the connector, as shown in FIG. 3. During assembly, theclamping sheets 77 are bent into an L-shape, thereby clamping thebase plate 3 and theboard 4 between thecover plate 7 and theclamping sheets 77. As such, thebase plate 3 and thecover plate 7 are interconnected fixedly so as to confine theboard 4 between thebase plate 3 and thecover plate 7 and thereby preventing removal of themovable member 51 from theslide slot 321 in theplate 3, as shown in FIG. 4. Theright slot portion 576 extends forwardly and rightward from theright end 579 of therear slot portion 573 to the rear end of the longitudinalfront slot portion 571. - The guiding action of the
guide slot 57 and the biasing actions of thespring 53 and the firstresilient arm 515 are described in the succeeding paragraphs. - Referring to FIGS. 5 and 9, when the
movable member 51 is located at a first position, because thespring 53 is stretched so as to generate a restoration force that biases themovable member 51 forwardly, thetongue 551 is biased by thespring 53 to the curvedmiddle portion 580. In this situation, the firstresilient arm 515 is pressed by thelink rod 55 to flex relative to thepositioning element 511, and thus generates a restoration force that biases thetongue 551 to the right. When it is desired to eject thesmart card 20, thefront end 21 of thesmart card 20 is pressed inwardly until therear end 22 of thesmart card 20 arrives at the rear end (35R) of thegroove 35, i.e. a rear limit position of thesmart card 20, thereby moving thetongue 551 to theright end 579 of the V-shapedrear slot portion 573 with the assistance of the flexed firstresilient arm 515, as shown in FIG. 10. Thereafter, thesmart card 20 is released so that thetongue 551 is pulled by thespring 53 to theright slot portion 576, as shown in FIG. 11, and subsequently to the closed front end 577 (see FIG. 6) of the longitudinalfront slot portion 571, as shown in FIG. 6, in a direction shown by an arrowhead (A) in FIG. 6 by virtue of the biasing forces of the firstresilient arm 515 and thespring 53. When thetongue 551 moves to the position shown in FIG. 6, themovable member 51 moves to a second position so that thesmart card 20 is moved by theabutment portion 513 of thepositioning element 511 to an extended position shown in FIG. 12, where the conductive plate 201 (see FIG. 12) is disconnected electrically from thepins 47 and where the first and secondresilient arms link rod 55 with no pressure being applied thereby to thelink rod 55. As such, thelink rod 55 extends toward the junction between the longitudinalfront slot portion 571 and theleft slot portion 575. When thesmart card 20 is located at the extended position shown in FIG. 12, it can be taken easily out from the electrical connector. - When it is desired to connect the
smart card 20 electrically to thepins 47, thesmart card 20 is inserted into thegroove 35 until therear end 22 of thesmart card 20 contacts theabutment portion 513 of thepositioning element 511. That is to say, thesmart card 20 is placed at the extended position. Then, thesmart card 20 is pressed inwardly from the extended position shown in FIG. 12 so as to move thetongue 551 into theleft slot portion 575 in a direction shown by an arrowhead (B) in FIG. 6 by virtue of the guidance of the first and secondresilient arms tongue 551 moves to the rear end of theleft slot portion 575, as shown in FIG. 7, the firstresilient arm 515 is pressed by thelink rod 55 to flex relative to thepositioning element 511 so as to generate a restoration force that biases thelink rod 55 to rotate clockwise, thereby moving thetongue 551 to theleft end 578 of the V-shapedrear slot portion 571, as shown in FIG. 8, in which therear end 22 of thesmart card 20 reaches the rear end (35R) of thegroove 35, i.e. the rear limit position of thesmart card 20, thereby preventing further rearward movement of thesmart card 20 on thebase plate 3. Subsequently, thesmart card 20 is released so that thetongue 551 is moved by thespring 53 and the flexed firstresilient arm 515 to the curvedmiddle portion 580 of the V-shapedrear slot portion 573, as shown in FIG. 9. - As described above, in order to move the
smart card 20 from one of the extended and retracted positions to the other one, the steps needed to be performed include only pressing thesmart card 20 to its rear limit position and subsequently releasing the same. Accordingly, electrical connection and disconnection of thesmart card 20 can be accomplished easily by means of the electrical connector of this invention. - With this invention thus explained, it is apparent that numerous modifications and variations can be made without departing the scope and spirit of this invention. It is therefore intended that this invention be limited only as indicated by the appended claims.
