PATENT OFFICE ATOMIZING DEVICE Richard Emil Delling, Erfenschlag,
near Chemnitz, Germany, assignor of on -half to Emil Freytag, Zwickau, Germany Application October 12, 1933, Serial No. 693,325
In Germany April 6, 1932 1 Claim.
This invention relates to an atomizing device for internal combustion engines.
The device according to the invention serves for producing a mixture of crude oil and air by means of a nozzle which feeds the mist produced at its mouth by way of a rotary atomizer wheel fitted with oblique ribs to the combustion space of the engine. It has been proposed already to supply the mist to the ribs of such a wheel from without, but that involves the possibility of the formation of large drops of fuel within the mixture prior to the entrance thereof into the inner space of the atomizer wheel.
According to the invention, the opening of the atomizer nozzle extends into the inner space of the wheel provided with ribs and is directed towards the ribs which have sharp edges facing the inner space. The mist produced at the mouth of the nozzle is thus guided immediately after its production, through the spaces between the obliquely disposed ribs, from the inside to the outside and thence to the engine so as to prevent the formation of drops in the mixture coming from the nozzle. By providing the ribs with a fine edge as sharp as a knife greater refinement of the mist is aimed at. Although it has been proposed already to manufacture the ribs from strips of sheet iron whose edges are sharp per se, a still finer construction of the edges will refine the mist still more and lead to better eiliciency in combustion. Still greater refinement of the mist is produced by causing the air gap between the ribs to extend obliquely to the direction of the axis of the atomizer wheel. k
By way of example, the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 a is a vertical section of an atomizer wheel in a Fig. 2, a section on the line A-B, of Fig. 3, a section on casin Fig. 1, seen from the front; the line C-D, of Fig. i, seen from the front; and Fig. 4, a view of an atomizer wheel provided with ribs and air gaps between the ribs, which extend obliquely to the axial direction of the atomizer wheel.
Referring to the drawing, the atomizer wheel 2 is rotatably disposed in the casing l and rotated at high speed by means of the toothed gearing 3, 3' driven by an electric motor, not shown. The atomizer wheel 2 has a hollow inner space 4 and its wall is formed from ribs 5 which are arranged in oblique direction to facilitate the cutting up of the mixture. Asshown in Fig. 4 the ribs 5 and the air gaps between the ribs extend obliquely to the axis of rotation of the wheel. as shown in Fig. 2, the ribs 5 in the hollow space 4 have edges 8 of knife-like keenness, and the wheel 2 turns in the direction of the arrow E. The crude oil serving as fuel is injected or drawn through a nozzle 9 guided in the cover ill of the casing I and terminating approximately in the center of the hollow space 4 against the sharp edges 8 of the wheel 2, caught and cut up by the edges 8, and then by the centrifugal action of the wheel 2 driven out through the gap 6 and completely atomized. Between the cover i0 and the casing i a disc i2 provided with perforations II is disposed and fitted with a slide I3 possessing the openings i4. When the openings ll of the slide [3 are fully or partly in register with the openings ll of the firmly arranged disc l2, air varying in quantity is supplied to the hollow space 4. On the other hand, when the slide openings H are outside the disc openings Ii, air supply is throttled.
I claim:-
A device for atomizing fuel, particularly crude oil, in an internal combustion engine, comprising a casing, an atomizer wheel having a hollow inner space and being rotatably disposed in said casing, a plurality of obliquely arranged ribs with intervening air gaps forming the wall of said wheel, said air gaps extending obliquely to the axial direction of said atomizer wheel, knife-like edges facing the hollow inner space of said wheel and forming part of said ribs, a nozzle so formed as to produce a mist at its mouth, and'disposed to deliver said mist'to said wheel and thus to the combustion space, the mouth of said nozzle being disposed obliquely to the axis of said wheel and extending into the inner space thereof in the direction towards said ribs, and means for regulating the air supply to the inner hollow space of said wheel.
