Description
L. RUGGLES. Road-Scrapers.
No. 200,151 Patented Feb.12,1878.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LORENZO RUGGLES, OF FRANKFORT, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROAD-SCRAPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,151, dated February 12, 1878; application filed July 21, 18.77. e
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LORENZO RUGGLES, of Frankfort, in Will county and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Road- Scrapers and Levelers, the description and operation of which I will proceed to explain, reference being had to the annexed drawings,
making a part of this specification, in;which Figure 1 is a plan view on the top Fig. 2 a side elevation, and Fig. 3 a side elevation of one of the traveling-wheels and its lever.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a device in a peculiar manner, so arranged as to be used for the [purpose of scraping the earth at the side of a road up into the center, to round it up, and also to even the surface by filling up any ruts or holes.
In the drawings, A represents the main frame of the machine arranged in a triangular form, having at its front end a metal shear or point, K, which extends the whole length of the frame in front, to prevent its wearing and to out the earth.
The machine has a seat, H, for the driver, and is provided at the center with two traveling-wheels inclosed within the sides of the frame shown at B. These wheels turn independently of each other on the ends of the axle L, and are attached to the frame by bolts on the elbow at the lower end of the leversD, so that, as the levers arefmoved backward or forward, the machine is elevated or lowered, as shown in Fig. 2, and the front end of the machine will pass over any obstruction.
As the wheels are independent of each other in their movement, the levers D may be elevated or lowered simultaneously with each other, or otherwise, the result of which will be to raise the whole front end of the machine up at once, or only one side at a time, as may be desired, to meet any obstruction. This may all be done by the driver as he rides in the seat H.
a is a cross-bar near the front end of the machine, provided with a number of holes to adjust the clevis and chain 0 to any locality, so the machine will run sidewise either way, to run more or less abruptly against the earth being carried up into the road.
In order to prevent the rear end of the frame A from swinging around sidewise when in operation, a spur-wheel, c, is used, the teeth of which engage with the earth and cause it to run straight ahead.
The'whole device is intended to be drawn by horses, and will perform much better work v than can be done by almost any other device.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Leters Patent is as follows, to wit:
The triangular frame A, having the traveling-wheels B, axle L, levers D, spur-wheel e, shear K, seat H z, perforated cross-bar a, and clevis and chain 0, all constructed, arranged, and operating as and for the purposes set forth.
