In order to deliver the mandrel with the paper bottle body wound upon it to the next succeeding operation and at the same time to provide for the reception of a new mandrel, it is necessary to open the divided shell-housing and this I do by the following mechanism.
30 is a counter shaft supported in suitable bearings in the frame of the machine and 3| is a cam secured to the shaft 30. 32 is a link pivotally connected to a pin 33 on the portion 13 of the divided shell-housing at one end and at the opposite end to an arm 34 by a pin 35. The arm 34. is secured on the stud 36 supported in suitable bearings in the bed plate of the machine. 31 is a link pivotally'connected to the pin 38 on the portion l of the divided shell-housing.
The link 31 is connected to a bell crank arm 39 secured to the stud shaft 36. 40 is a bell crank arm secured to the shaft 36 and is connected to a rod 4| which coacts with the cam 3| through the medium of a roller 42.
It will now be seen on reference to Figs. 5 and 6 that the divided portions l3 and I5 are both opened and closed through the medium of the cam 3| and the connecting rods and arms hereinbefore described.
In order to hold the paper taut on the mandrel as it is being wound I provide, in addition to the rollers 26 hereinbefore described, the rollers 43 secured on suitable studs 44 (see Figs. 2 and 4).
In order to hold the roller l2 resiliently against the mandrel 8, I provide on each arm l6 at the end 'of the cradle 25 a depending. boss 45 which is provided with a recess 46 into which the ends 25' of the cradle 25 fit, being supported therein by spiral springs 41 fitting in a recess 41 and resting on a cross bar 48 held in place by set screws 49 extending into the bosses 45. It will thus be seen that the roller I2 will be resiliently held against the roller 8 in order to accommodate the increased thickness of the paper when being wound on the mandrel.
It will be seen from this description that I have provided a very effective winding mechanism whereby the connected rectangular and areshaped blanks may be wound into bottle form.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. The combination with a mandrel comprising a cylindrical straight portion and-a frusto-conical portion, of a shell having its interior walls spaced from the mandrel a distance equal to the thickness of the blank and corresponding in shape to the shape of the straight and tapered portion of the mandrel and means for simultaneously winding a blank portion around each straight and tapered portion of the mandrel with their adjacent edges in lapped position to form a bottle body.
'2. The combination with a rotating turret and a series of mandrels mounted thereon to travel in a circular path, of a divided shell housing surrounding the mandrel the lower shell portion having a peripheral entrance mouth through which paper blanks are fed to engage the revolving mandrel, a pivot, a pair of arms swung thereon and on which the shell portions are respectively mounted to swing out of and into the path of the mandrel to enclose the same.
3. The combination with a mandrel comprising a cylindrical straight portion and a 'frustoconical portion formed integral, of a shell having its walls spaced from the mandrel a distance equal to the thickness of the paper blank, a feed mouth in the shell for the passage of a blank around each portion of the mandrel, a cradle carried by and extending longitudinally beneath the shell and parallel thereto and having a longitudinal slot in the bottom thereof, a divided shaft journalled atv its ends in the end walls of the shell a universal joint connection between the inner ends of the shaft members, a roller mounted on each shaft member to engage the straight and tapered portions of the mandrel, and a broad V shaped roller engaging the pe-- ripheries of the aforesaid rollers at their adjacent ends and spring pressed thereagainst to retain the rollers in contact with the mandrel.
4. The combination with a suitably rotated mandrel comprising a cylindrical straight portion and a frusto-conical portion, of a shell having its interior periphery spaced from the straight and frusto-conical portions of the mandrel to permit the winding of a bottle blank around the mandrel between the mandrel and shell and having a longitudinal slot and a blank feeding slot therein, roller members contacting .through the longitudinal slot with the straight and inclined peripheries of the mandrel, and means for driving the roller members in unison from the mandrel.
5. The combination with a suitably rotated mandrel comprising a cylindrical straight portion and a frusto-conical portion, of a shell having its interior periphery spaced from the straight and frusto-conical portions of the mandrel to permit the winding of abottle blank around the mandrel between the mandrel and shell and having a longitudinal slot and a blank feeding slot therein, horizontal and inclined roller members contacting through the longitudinal slot respectively with the straight and inclined peripheries of the mandrel, means for driving the roller members in unison from the mandrel, and means for resiliently holding the inclined roller member in contact with the inclined periphery portion of the mandrel and the adjacent inner end of the roller member in contact with the straight periphery of the mandrel.
6. The combination with a suitably rotated mandrel comprising a cylindrical straight portion and a frusto-conical portion, of a shell having its interior periphery spaced from the straight and frusto-conical portions of the mandrel to permit the winding of a bottle blank around the mandrel between the mandrel and shell and having a longitudinal slot and a blank feeding slot therein, roller members contacting throughthe longitudinal slot with the straight and inclined peripheries of the mandrel, means for driving the roller members in-unison from the mandrel, a cradle extending parallel to the straight and inclined peripheral portions of the shell and resiliently pressed upward, roller members revolubly mounted in the cradle to contact with straight and inclined peripheral portions of the mandrel, and a V-roller journalled in the cradle and spring held upward against the peripheries of the adjacent ends of the roller members.
