The arm portion remote ends preferably include fastener means such as hook and loop fasteners which removably join the arm portions together to hold them engaged around the user. The lateral edges are either folded down around and underneath the edges of a mattress on which the cover may rest, or remain loose so that the lateral regions together with the arm portions are wrapped over the top of the user. Alternatively the sheet is a cushion or pad so that the cover functions as a sleeping bag. The head region preferably includes a pillow removably secured to the upper surface.
- 2. Description of the Prior Art
- There have long been covers such as sheets and blankets for placing the body of a person resting in a bed, and sleeping bags for supporting and covering a person reclining on a surface other than a bed. These covers have served to retain body heat and prevent exposure, and some have been decorated with ornamental patterns and cartoon images. Yet the designs of these covers have fallen short of creating the sense and illusion of actually being embraced by a character represented on the decorated surface, and thus providing a warm response and a sense of security, particularly in children.
- It is thus an object of the present invention to provide a body cover which includes a representation of a living or hypothetical individual, such as a person in the form of a movie star, an animal or a cartoon character, having lateral appendages configured to resemble the arms of the individual for wrapping around a person reclining on the cover to create the sense and illusion of being embraced by the represented individual.
- It is another object of the present invention to provide such a cover which includes fastening means on the lateral appendages to hold them in place as they embrace the person.
- It is still another object of the present invention to provide such a cover which includes a pillow fixed against substantial movement relative to the cover and thus against substantial movement relative to the embraced user, so that the pillow does not cover the face of an infant user and diminishes the likelihood of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), the pillow including a representation of a represented individual's head.
- It is a still further object of the present invention to provide such a cover which keeps a child covered throughout the night, provides an easy transition for the child from sleeping in a crib to sleeping in a bed, which prevents a child from falling off a bunk bed or baby change table, which comforts a child afraid of the dark or of being alone, and for which the pillow stays on the bed.
- It is a still additional object of the present invention to provide such a cover which can take the form of a blanket, a quilt, a comforter, a bedsheet, linens, a towel or a fur cover, which can be designed to fit any size bed, bunk bed, crib, baby change table, baby bassinet, or sleeping bag.
- It is finally an object of the present invention to provide such a cover which is comfortable and economical to manufacture.
- The present invention accomplishes the above-stated objectives, as well as others, as may be determined by a fair reading and interpretation of the entire specification.
- A body cover is provided, including a sheet of flexible material having a sheet upper surface and a sheet longitudinal axis, dividing the sheet into two lateral regions; two lateral edges extending generally parallel to the longitudinal axis, each lateral edge extending adjacent to one of the sheet lateral regions; a head region at a first end of the sheet and a head edge adjacent to the head region; a foot region at a second end of the sheet and a foot edge adjacent to the foot region; and an arm portion extending laterally from one of the lateral regions beyond the adjacent the lateral edge; so that the body cover creates a visual impression of a represented individual.
- The arm portion of the body cover preferably is connected to and extends from a lateral edge of the at least one lateral region. Each of the lateral edges preferably is configured to represent the lateral contour of the represented individual. The arm portion has an arm portion edge and the arm portion edge preferably is shaped and preferably is marked to resemble the configuration of an appendage of the represented individual on both sides of said arm portions.
- The body cover preferably includes two of the arm portions, one of the arm portions extending from each of the lateral edges, which are removable and re-attachable from the lateral edges of the sheet with hook and loop fasteners, and one of the arm portions preferably extends laterally from and beyond each of the lateral regions and the arm portions preferably include a fastener for releasibly joining the arm portions together while the arm portions wrap around a user body.
- The sheet of flexible material optionally includes a cushion extending substantially the length and width of the sheet; so that the cover defines and functions as a sleeping bag. The body cover preferably additionally includes a pillow removably secured relative to the upper surface of the sheet of flexible material. The pillow optionally is removably secured to the upper surface of the sheet of flexible material at the head region. In this instance, the pillow preferably includes a representation of the head of the represented individual. The body cover preferably additionally includes a pillow pocket secured to the upper surface of the sheet of flexible material and a pillow contained within the pillow pocket. The pillow pocket preferably is secured to the upper surface of the sheet of flexible material at the head region. The pillow preferably is removably contained within the pillow pocket. In this instance the pillow pocket preferably includes a representation of the head of the represented individual. Alternatively, the upper surface of the sheet of flexible material includes a representation of the head of the represented individual. In all of these instances, the representation of the head of the represented individual optionally includes pigments on the upper surface of the flexible sheet. In all of these instances, the pillow preferably is rounded to resemble the shape of the head of the represented individual on both sides of said pillow.
- A method is provided of using the body cover described above, including the steps of the user lying on top of the sheet of flexible material substantially along the longitudinal axis of the sheet, and placing the user head on the head region; and wrapping at least one of the arm portions over the top of and around the user body. The method preferably includes the additional step of securing one said arm portion to the other arm portion with the arm portion fastener.
