Interior region 30 ofmattress cover 24 receives a mattress core which includes afoam base 38, a longitudinally-extendingfirst side member 40 positioned to lie abovefoam base 38 and adjacent tofirst side 18 offoam base 38, a longitudinally-extendingsecond side member 42 positioned to lie abovefoam base 38 adjacent tosecond side 20 offoam base 38, and anair mattress 44 positioned to lie abovefoam base 38 and above first andsecond side members cover 24 holds the elements of mattress core together and provides an interface betweenmattress assembly 12 and the person supported bymattress assembly 12. -
Foam base 38 is illustratively made from a plurality of longitudinally spaced base sections including ahead section 46 adjacent tohead end 14 ofmattress assembly 12, aseat section 50 adjacent tohead section 46, and aleg section 52 adjacent toseat section 50 and adjacent tofoot end 16 ofmattress assembly 12 as shown in FIG. 1.Foam base 38 is preferably made from foam rubber such as polyurethane foam which is well known and commonly used for producing foam mattresses. Each illustrated base section is covered by medical grade staff-check ticking such as the ticking material from whichmattress cover 24 is made. Preferably, the ticking material covering base sections is Staff Check XL material made by Herculite. - The illustrated first and
second side members interior regions second side members Side members side members second sides mattress assembly 12. - In the illustrated embodiment, a
conduit 58 connectsfirst side member 40 to a source of pressurizedfluid 60 as shown diagrammatically in FIG. 1 so thatinterior region 54 offirst side member 40 is in fluid communication with a source of pressurizedfluid 60. Also in preferred embodiments, a second conduit (not shown) connectssecond side member 42 tofirst side member 40 so thatinterior region 56 ofsecond side member 42 is in fluid communication withinterior region 54 offirst side member 40. Thus, theinterior region 54 offirst side member 40 andinterior region 56 ofsecond side member 42 are each in fluid communication with source of pressurizedfluid 60 and each contains pressurized fluid that is pressurized to substantially the same pressure in eachinterior region - The mattress core of
mattress assembly 12 additionally includesair mattress 44 which has a plurality of longitudinally-spaced apart and transversely extendingair sacks 70.Air mattress 44 providesmattress assembly 12 with firmness and support characteristics that can be varied by varying the pressure of the pressurized fluid in the interior regions of eachair sack 70. Illustratively, air mattress 44 includes fourair sacks 70, although there is no limit to the number ofair sacks 70 that can be included withair mattress 44 ofmattress assembly 12 and controlled by a control assembly in accordance with the present invention. In addition, althoughair sacks 70 ofair mattress 44 are longitudinally spaced apart and extend transversely, the shapes and relative positioning ofair sacks 70 can be varied without exceeding the scope of the invention as presently perceived. - The illustrated
air mattress 44 includes a headsection air zone 72 adjacent tohead end 14 of bed 10 and positioned to lie abovehead section 46 offoam base 38, a backsection air zone 74 adjacent to headsection air zone 72 and positioned to lie abovehead section 46 offoam base 38, a seatsection air zone 76 adjacent to backsection air zone 74 and positioned to lie aboveseat section 50 andleg section 52 offoam base 38, and a legsection air zone 78 positioned to lie adjacent to seatsection air zone 76 and positioned to lie aboveleg section 52 offoam base 38 and adjacent tofoot end 16 ofmattress assembly 12. The flow of pressurized fluid fromside members air mattress 44 is described in detail in the '288 patent. - FIG. 2 illustrates a
side bolster system 110 in accordance with the present invention.Side bolster system 110 is adapted for use with themattress assembly 12.Side bolster system 110 is configured to extend longitudinally along theopposite sides mattress assembly 12 to provide lateral support tomattress assembly 12, without impeding entry or exit frommattress assembly 12. - The
mattress assembly 12 can be used on any type of bed such as a bed for use in a hospital or other care facility, a bed for use in a home, or any other type of bed having an upwardly-facing surface above which a user will rest. Such beds often include an articulating deck having longitudinally-spaced sections that are movable relative to one another. Mattressassembly 12 is compatible with such articulating decks. -
Side bolster system 110 is configured to provide support tomattress assembly 12 along first andsecond sides mattress assembly 12. The support provided byside bolster system 110 helps to maintain the positioning of a person on the mattress when the person moves toward thesides mattress assembly 12. Side bolstersystem 110 includes ashoulder section 120, aseat section 122, and a pair oftether links shoulder section 120 to theseat section 122, as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. - Shoulder bolsters120 and seat bolsters 122 illustratively include a foam core surrounded by a cover. The cover is illustratively made from a Penn-Nyla material. Tether links 123, 124 are illustratively sewn to covers on shoulder and
seat sections tethers shoulder section 120 andseat section 122. -
Shoulder section 120 of side bolstersystem 110 provides support to thehead section 46 ofmattress assembly 12 along first andsecond sides mattress assembly 12 to help maintain the positioning of a person on themattress assembly 12.Shoulder section 120 strengthens first andsecond sides mattress 44 near thehead section 46 ofmattress assembly 12.Shoulder section 120 of side bolstersystem 110 includes a first side bolster 130 and a second side bolster 132, as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. First and second side bolsters 130, 132 are positioned to extend longitudinally along first andsecond sides mattress assembly 12 and are generally aligned withhead section 46 offoam base 38. First and second side bolsters 130, 132 are substantially identical to one another, and therefore, the description of one applies equally to the other. - First and second side bolsters130, 132 each include a primary-
support section 142 and a secondary-support section 144 extending vertically upwardly from the primary-support section 142. The primary-support section 142 andsecondary support section 144 may be formed as one piece as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 or as separate pieces (not shown). Each primary-support section 142 includes atop surface 146, abottom surface 147, anexterior side surface 148, and a concaveinterior side surface 149. Each secondary-support portion 144 includes a rounded (convex)top surface 150, abottom surface 151, anexterior surface 152, and aninterior surface 153. Thebottom surface 151 of the secondary-support portion 144 is positioned to lie on thetop surface 146 of primary-support portion 142 when primary and secondary-support portions support portions surfaces - Each side bolster130, 132 of
shoulder section 120 mates with a head end ofmattress assembly 12 as shown in FIG. 3. As shown in FIG. 3, the concaveinterior side surface 149 of primary-support section 142 is sized and shaped to receivefirst side member 40 of mattress core 36. In addition, theinterior side surface 153 of secondary-support portion 144 is configured to engage a side wall ofair mattress 44 near thehead end 14 of bed 10.Shoulder section 120 of side bolstersystem 110 is illustratively positioned to lie withincover 24. - It is understood that in another embodiment of the present invention the bolsters120 and 122 may be located outside the
interior region 30 of thecover 24 and attached to themattress assembly 12 or to a bed on which themattress assembly 12 is positioned. - A pair of
tether links tether link central portion 160 and twoopposite end portions central portion 160 preferably includes anextension mechanism 166 to allow thecentral portion 160 to be adjusted to various lengths to accommodate varying sizes of mattresses. Eachend portion tether link first portion 168 and asecond portion 170. Thefirst portion 168 is illustratively snapped to thetop surface 146 ofprimary support section 142 and the second portion is illustratively snapped to thebottom surface 147 of primary-support section 142, although a variety of fastening means (such as those discussed above) may be used instead of a snap. The first andsecond portions end portion central portion 160, although a wide variety of fastening means (such as those discussed above) could also be used. - First and
second portions central portion 160 to define anopening 172 betweeninterior side surface 149 ofprimary support section 142 and first andsecond portions Opening 172 is sized to receive arespective side member members second portions tether links side members - As shown in FIG. 3,
top surface 146,bottom surface 147, andinterior side surface 149 ofprimary support section 142 cooperate to define afirst projection 154 and asecond projection 155.First projection 154 extends betweenair mattress 44 andside member 40.Second projection 155 extends betweenside member 40 andfoam base 38. As shown in FIG. 3, bothmattress 44 andfoam base 38 are flexible and conform to the shape of eachprojection - As shown diagrammatically in FIG. 3,
secondary support section 144 provides lateral support to a head end ofmattress 44. This support inhibits the movement ofmattress 44 axially outwardly when a person is positioned near aside mattress 44. Thus, air mattress 44 will substantially maintain its shape along the longitudinal sides ofmattress 44 as the person moves closer to the side of themattress 44. -
Seat section 122 of side bolstersystem 110 is substantially similar toshoulder section 120 and includes a first side bolster 130 and a second side bolster 132. The only difference betweenseat section 122 andshoulder section 120 is that each side bolster 130, 132 ofseat section 122 only includesprimary support section 142 and does not includesecondary support section 144.Seat section 122 of side bolstersystem 110 provides some support tomattress assembly 12, but it provides less support thanshoulder section 120.Secondary support section 144 is eliminated from seat section 222 so that the person is less inhibited from exitingmattress assembly 12 when the person is in a seated position and trying to exit from an area adjacent toseat section 50 offoam base 38, than if thesecondary support section 144 were present. As shown in FIG. 4,seat section 122 includes first andsecond projections air mattress 44,side member 40, andfoam base 38, in exactly the same manner as didshoulder section 120 which was previously described. In addition, tether links seat section 122 in exactly the same manner as previously described. - Each side bolster130, 132 of
shoulder section 120 andseat section 122 includes a foam core material defining the primary andsecondary support sections - To install side bolster
system 110 ontomattress assembly 12, a user first unzips cover 22 and pull backtop cover 26 to obtain access toair mattress 44,side members foam base 38. The user then positionsshoulder section 120 of side bolstersystem 110 near thehead end 14 ofmattress assembly 12.First projection 154 is positioned betweenair mattress 44 andside members second projection 155 is positioned betweenside members foam base 38, respectively. Of course, seat section 122 of side bolstersystem 110 is positioned in the same manner asshoulder section 120 of side bolstersystem 110 except thatseat section 122 is positioned near theseat section 50 offoam base 38. The user then rolls an air cushion ofair mattress 44 back and snaps first andsecond portions tether links cover 24 can then be positioned around the side bolster system 210 and rezipped. -
Shoulder section 120 andseat section 122 each include two pairs oftether links second sides mattress assembly 12. Illustratively, as shown in FIG. 2,tether links air mattress 44 andfoam base 38. However, side bolstersystem 110 could also be configured to include a pair oftether links mattress 44 and the other tether link could extend underfoam base 38. This would allow side bolstersystem 110 to be installed eitherinside cover 24 oroutside cover 24. Of course, bolstersystem 110 shown in FIG. 1 could also be installed eitherinside cover 24 oroutside cover 24 by having at least onetether link bottom cover 28 ofmattress assembly 12. - Although the invention has been described in detail with reference to a certain illustrated embodiment, variations and modifications exist within the scope and spirit of the invention as described and as defined in the following claims.
