I2, in which doors [3 and I4, respectiv object is to provide an improvedcompartment car in which the passenger capacity is materially increased without increasing the overall size of the car. Axfurther object is the provision of a generous number of individual or single rooms. :Compartment cars at present in vogueare of two general types. The older type; comprises a series of compartments each of which accommodates. two, and some of them three, passengers. The newer type comprises a series of individual or single compartments. In either case, the number of passengers which can be accommodated in the car is so limited that the economic waste entailed makes traveling-in them expensive, and to a great extent prohibitively so.

My invention contemplates a double deck arrangement, i. e., lower and upper rooms, andby combinations of double and single rooms, and arrangement of the beds therein, I am enabled to utilize the standard allotment of space most efficiently and to accommodate a suflicient number of passengers in one car to bring travel in them within the means of the average patron of sleeping cars. In this form of my. invention all the lower rooms are single rooms.

The upper rooms are all double rooms and they extend from side to sideof the car i. e., over the lower rooms and over the, aisle. The transverse partitions I8 and I9 extend the height of the car and extendcompletely across the car.

except that all of them are arched at 28 to leave the aisle, and. at just sufficient height, and the partitions l8 are additionally cut to provide for the centrally located stair well. This well is formed by the walls 29, 30 and 3| and the stair, within these walls, indicated at 32, leads up from the aisle to the upper deck. The upper deck is of multiple stage construction, having the floor portions 33 and the bed portions 34, the latter portions being higher than the former portions to the extent of the appropriate height of a bed. The floor portions 33 are substantially co-extensive with the beds below and lie directly over them. The bed portions lie over the floor portions below and the aisle. The result is that a person may stand comfortably wherever there is floor space, or in the aisle, below and, atthe same time, a person may stand comfortably wherever there is floor space above.

The upper compartments are indicated at 35 and 36. As in the case of the compartments below, they are identical except that half of them are a complement of the other half, and they are arranged in units or pairs overthe compartments below and extending, further, over the aisle.

Each of the upper compartments has a transverse bed 31 and a lengthwise bed 38, the latter lyingover the aisle and being substantially of the width of the aisle. The former is ofthe same size as the bed below but it lies, as will be seen, against the wall [9 instead of against the wall l8. The floor space 33 of the upper compartment is ample for the accommodation of toilet facilities such as the toilet stool 39 and wash basin 39', and for the accommodation of an unattached chair, such as the chair 22a in each lower compartment. My improved arragement providing for this chair, which may be faced in either direction at the window sitting space in the upper and lower compartments, is

a desirable feature because many sleeping car patrons refuse to ride backward during day travel. The windows for the upper compartment are in number and position the same as those below, being placed at a height immediately above the bed. Oblique doors -40 are appropriately provided between the stair walls 29 and 30 and the dividing wall l8 in order to afford access from the stairs to the respective rooms of the unit-which that particular stair serves.

The space between the top of the bed and the ceiling of each compartment, either upper or ard: size. v

In the form of my invention illustrated in Figures 5, 6 and '7, I decrease the number of double rooms and increase the number of single rooms, which may be more popular on some runs. The arrangement there shown accommodates thirty passengers in six double upper rooms, six single upper rooms and twelve single lower rooms.

For convenience the same reference characters are used for analogous parts in the showing of this modification. The differences are as follows:

The rooms and beds below are slightly smaller and, above, each unit comprises a single and a double room. The double room above is substantially the same as the double room shown in Figure 2, while the single room above has a transverse bed lying over the aisle and partly over the floor space of the room below. The partitions I8 of the lower deck extend only to the upper deck and the mid-partition l8 between the rooms of each pair above is slightly offset as will be seen by-comparison of Figures 5 and 6. This arrangement of pairs of upper rooms 35 and 3G is repeated along the length of the car whereby the single rooms 35 and double rooms 36 occur alternately, i. e., a single room 35, a double room 36, a single room 35 and so on.

I claim:

1. In a sleeping car, a main floor and a two stage upper deck, an aisle and a series of compartmentson said main floor, a bed in each of said compartments, and a series of compartments on said upper deck each extending over said first named compartments and said aisle, the lower stages of said upper deck lying over said beds and the upper stages thereof lying over the open floor spaces below and saidaisle, and beds disposed transversely and lengthwise of the car in said upper compartments on the upper stages of said upper deck over said open floor spaces and aisle, and adjacent to. and accessible from a portionv of the lower stage of said upper deck.

In a sleeping car, a body divided into an aisleand a series of compartments, a two stage upper. deck roofing. said aisle and said compartments, a bed in each of said compartments, said bed lying transverse of the car, the lower stages of said upper deck lying over said beds and the upper stages thereof lying over the open floor spaces below, a pair of. compartments on said upper deck over each pair of compartments below, one of each pair of upper compartments having a bed transverse of the caron an upper stage vofsaid'deck over said aisle and partly over the floor space below, and the other of each pair of upper compartments having a lengthwise bed lying over the aisle and a transverse bed lying over the open floor space of the compartment below, said beds in the upper compartments being adjacent to and accessible from a portion of the lower stage of said upper deck.

3. .In a sleeping car, a car body having a lengthwise partition and a series of transverse partitions forming an aisle and a series of compartments, abed in each of said compartments, and a two-stage upper deck, the lower stages of said upper deck lying over said beds and the upper stages thereof lying over said aisle and over the floor spaces of said compartments, and beds disposed transversely and lengthwise of the car on said upper stages over said floor spaces and aisle said latter beds being adjacent to and accessible from a portion of the lower stage of said upper deck.

6.-In a sleeping car, a body divided into an aisle extending along one side of the body and aseries of lower compartments between said aisle and the other side of the body, beds in said lower compartments, a multiple stageiupper deck roofing said aisle and said lower compartments and divided into upper compartments, the lower stages of said upper deck lying over said lower beds and the upper stages thereof lying over the open floor spaces below, a plurality of. said upper compartments each having two beds therein and a plurality of. said upper compartments each having a single bed therein, said double bed and single bed compartments alternating along the length of the car, the two beds of said double bed compartments comprising a bed disposed transversely of the car on an upper stage of said deck and a bed disposed lengthwise of the car lying over said aisle, the beds in said upper compartments being adjacent to and accessible from a portion of the lower stage of said upper deck.

In a sleeping car, a, body divided into an aisle extending along one side of the'body and a series of lower compartments between said aisle and the other side of the body, beds in said lower compartments, a multiple-stage upper. deck roofing said aisle and said lower compartments and divided into upper compartments, the lower stages of said upper deck lying over said lower beds and the upper stages thereof lying over the open floor spaces below, a plurality of said upper compartments eachhaving two beds therein :and a plurality of said upper compartments each having a single bed therein, said double bed and single bed compartments alternating along the length of the car, the two beds of said double bed compartments comprising a bed disposed transversely of the car on an upper stage of said deck and a bed extending lengthwise of the car, said beds in the upper compartments being adjacent to and accessible from a portion of the lower stage of said upper deck; H

In a sleeping car, a body divided into an .aisleextending along only one side of the body and 'a series of lower compartments extending across the entire space from said aisle to the opposite side wall of the body, beds in said lower compartments, a multiple stage upper deck roofing said lower compartments and said aisle, transverse partitions extending from side wall to side wall of the car body above said upper deck and defining a plurality of upper compartments, the lower stagesof said upper deck lying over portions of the beds in said lower compartments and the upper stages thereof lying over portions of the open floor spaces below, beds in a plurality of said upper compartments on upper stages of said upper deck and extending lengthwise of the car, said latter beds being adjacent to and accessible from a portion of the lower stage of said upper deck and windows opening into said upper compartments at opposite sides of the car.

17. In a sleeping car, a car body comprising a main fioor and two side walls, a lengthwise dividing wall adjacent one of said side walls and defining therewith a lengthwise aisle extending along one side of the car body, a plurality of transverse partitions extending from said lengthwise wall to the opposite side wall of the car body and defining a plurality of lower compartments, certain of said partitions comprising doors for establishing direct communication between adjacent lower compartments, doors opening from the aisle into said lower compartments, toilet seats in said lower compartments between said latter doors and said latter partitions, beds in said lower compartments, a multiple stage upper deck roofing said lower compartments'transverse partitions dividing the space above said upper deck into a plurality of upper compartments, the-lower stages of said upper deck lying over portions of the beds in said lower compartments and the upper stages thereof lying over portions of the open floor spaces below, beds in said upper compartments on upper stages of said upper deck and adjacent to and accessible from a portion of the lower stage of said upper deck, and

transversely extending stairs leading from said aisle to said upper compartments.

In a sleeping car, a car body comprising a main floor and two side walls, a lengthwise dividing wall adjacent to one of said side walls and defining therewith a lengthwise aisle extending along one side of the car body, a plurality of transverse partitions extending from said lengthwise wall to the opposite side wall of the car compartments, a multiple stage upper deck roof- .ing said lower compartments, transverse partitions extending from said wall to side wall of the car body above said upper deck and defining a plurality of upper compartments, the lower stages of said upper deck lying over portions of the beds in said lower compartments and the upper stages thereof lying over portions of the open floor spaces below, beds in said upper compartments adjacent to and accessible from a portion of the lower stage of said upper deck, and stairs leading from said aisle to said upper compartments.

19. In a sleeping car, a car body comprising a main floor, right and left side walls and'a roof, a lengthwise dividing wall adjacent to said right side wall and defining therewith a side aisle extending along the right side of the car body, a plurality of transverse partitions extending from said lengthwise dividing wall to the left side wall of the car body and defining a series of lower compartments, doors leading from said side aisle into said lower compartments, beds in said lower compartments, a multiple stage upper deck extending over said lower compartments and over said aisle, the lower stages of said upper deck lying over portions of the beds in said lower compartments, the upper stages of said deck lying over the aisle and over the open floor spaces in said lower compartments, and extending from said lengthwise dividing wall to said left side wall at substantially a uniform level to provide full standing room space in each lower compartment extending substantially entirely to the left side wall of the car body, partitions above said upper deck defining upper compartments, and beds in a plurality of said upper compartments on the upper stage of said upper deck and extending lengthwise of the car, said latter beds being adjacent to and accessible from a portion of the lower stage of said upper deck.

20. In a sleeping car, a car body comprising a main floor, right and left side Walls and a roof, a lengthwise dividing wall adjacent to said right side wall and defining therewith a side aisle extending along the right side of the car body, a plurality of transverse partitions extending from said lengthwise dividing wall to the left side wall of the car body and defining a series of lower compartments, doors leading from said side aisle into said lower compartments, beds in said lower compartments, a multiple stage upper deck extending over said lower compartments and over said aisle, transverse partitions dividing the space above said upper deck into a plurality of upper compartments, transversely extending stairways leading from said aisle to said upper deck, each of said stairways affording access to a pair of adjacent upper compartments, lower stages of said upper deck lying over portions of the beds in said lower compartments and including portions extending at a substantially uniform level from said lengthwise dividing wall to Said left side wall on opposite sides of said stairways to provide a substantially horizontal floor level in each upper compartment extending from said lengthwise dividing Wall to said left side wall, upper stages of said upper deck extending at a substantially uniform level from said lengthwise dividing wall to said left side wall over the standing room space of each lowerrcompartment to provide head room greater than that of the average standing passenger extending from said lengthwise dividing wall to said left side wall in each lower compartment, beds in a plurality of said upper compartments on upper stages of said upper deck and extending transversely of the car, and beds in a plurality of said upper com partments on upper stages of said upper deck and extending longitudinally of the car, said beds in the upper compartments being adjacent to and accessible from a portion of the lower stage ofv said upper deck.
