WILLIAM DEMUTH, OF NEW YORK, N. .Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOBACCO-PIPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,030, dated February 5, 1878; application filed January 7, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM DEMUTH, of
I the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pipes and Cigar-Holders, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification,
lining in its bowl, composed of flint, feldspar and oluble glass which are incorporatet 0- getlier au't'l afp'heil to the interior of the bowl in a liquid state, and then permitted to set, whereby the durability of the bowl is greatly increased, without increasing the cost of the article to any extent.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a pipe, the bowl B of which is provided with a fire-proof lining, (marked 0.) This fire-proof lining I form of the following ingredients, viz: Flint one partfelds )ar two parts and a su clent quantityof soluble lass to fdrm a paste when the flint and feldspar are mixed together therewith. This composition is fireproof, and at the same time adheres to the surface of the article lined therewith.
In applying my lining to the bowl B, or to the bowl of a cigar-holder, I simply pour the 11 0 a composition, in semi-liquid form, into the bowl, and after the entire surface is covered therebyI pour the residue out again. The lining thus formed is then allowed to set or harden, and after this has taken place the article is ready for use.
My lining is particularly applicable to cheap wooden pipes, and by its use the durability of the article is obviously increased, while, by reason of the extreme facility of its application, the least possible expense is incurred in efl'ecting the desired object.
It is obvious that the application of the herein-described lining enables me to utilize wood or other material, which, on account of its liability to ignite or be affected by heat, could not be used heretofore in the manufacture of pipes and cigar-holders.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A tobacco-smoking pipe having its bowl provided with an interior fire-proof lining composed of flint, feldspar, and soluble glass, substantially as described.
In testimony thatIclaim the foregoingIhave hereunto set my hand and seal this 2d day of January, 1878.
