COMBINED SLITTING AND CRUSHING DEVICE Filed Aug. 9, 1954 JNVE T0 5 A TTORNE Y.
Patented May 7, 1935 4 V UNITED STATES COMBINED SLITTING AND CBUSHING DEVICE 1 Robert McG. Johnstone, Short Hills, and Leopold C. Borloz, West-Englewood, N. 1., assignors to Cameron Machine Company, Brooklyn, N. I, a corporation of New York 7 Application August 9, 1934, Serlal'No. 739,088
7 Claims. (Cl.16465 This invention relates to a combined slitting and crushing device for webs of flexible material, and has for its main object and feature the production of such a device of simple and effective construction.
In the accompanying drawing the invention is disclosed in several concrete and preferred forms in which:
Fig. 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section of a slitting and crushing device embodying the invention; j Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional viewsubstantially on the plane of line 22 of Fig. 1;v Fig. 3 is view similar to Fig. 1 showing a modified form of the invention; and
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view substantially on the plane of line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
I indicates a backing member consisting of a smooth face roller having a glass-hard surface over which passes a web of flexible material 2 such as bandage material. The device slits this material into strips of suitable widths, after which the strips are wound into rolls or coils in a-well-known manner. In order to prevent unraveling of the edges of the slitted material it is customary to crush the slitted edges, and the present invention constitutes an improvement on a combined slitting and crushing device.
Referringto Figs. 1 and 2, 3 indicates a carrier pivotally supported onrail 4 which rail is movable toward and away from the backing member by suitable means such as eccentric 5. 6 is a leaf spring which is anchored at 'l on the framework and which is placed under tension when the. carrier is moved toward the backing member. Said carrier is provided with a 'slot 8 in which is mounted a pintle 9, and on the latter is mounted a crushing element consisting of two crushing wheels i0 spaced apart by means of washer H. Interposed between the pintle and the crushing wheels is an anti-friction device here shown as a ball-bearing I2. Pivotally supported on main carrier 3 is an auxiliary carrier l3, the pivotal point being at H, and rotatably supported on the auxiliary carrier are one or more rollers l5. Adjustable spring 16 tends to urge the rollers in an upward direction in Fig. 1. Interposed between the crushing rollers and peripherally engaged by rollers I5 is a slitting element, here consisting of a score-cut slitter wheel I! and having a central opening ll of larger diameter than the outside diameter of washer l I. It will now'be understood that when the device is moved toward the backing member, the springs of both carriers are placed under tension so that the web as it passes-around the backing roller is'slitted and simultaneously therewith the slitted edges are crushed. Rollers I 5 may be smooth face rollers or they may be provided with a groove I 9 that reconditions or sharpens the slitting element. It will also be understood that a number of these combined slitting-and crushing devices may be mountedon rail 4. I
In Figs. 3 and 4, the reverse arrangement is shown. Here the main carrier 20 is mounted and spring-pressed as before but carries, by
means of ball-bearing 2|, slitting element 22,
which auxiliary carrier 23 and rolls 24 support the crushing rolls 25. V
The relative strength of springs 6. and [6 should be such that the net effectiveness of the spring that controls the crushing rollers is greater than that which controls the slitter.
We claim: v
