FRAGIIE ARTICLES Samuel Bergstein, Cincinnati, Ohio Application October 3, 1932, Serial No. 635,970 y Claims. (Cl. 229-29) My invention relates to the type of cartons Fig. 2 is aplan of the central partition or comb. used for the packaging of eggs and Christmas Fig. 3 iS a perspective of the blank Showing a tree ornaments and the like, that require eushfold that forms one of the legs of the carton. ioning from contact with each otherto prevent Fis. 4 is a perspective of a Carton in the knock 5 breakage, y down condition. i
Itis an object of my invention to lprovide an Fig- 5 iS a Perspective of a carton With the improved carton having a series of pockets with lateral partitions in place and ready to receive lateral partitions formed and cut in a carton a central partition or comb. blank, together with a longitudinal insert parti- Fig. 6 is a perspective of a carton showing a tion which subdivides the pockets and thereby comb in place. 10 prevents contact between the articles packed in Fig, 7 is a, perspective of a completed carton said carton. with its lid closed.
Another object of my invention is to provide Fig. 8 is a fragmentary section taken on the a carton for fragile articles, the bottom of which une 8 8 @f Fig. 6. is supported on legs Composed-of two ply layers Fig. 9 is a section takenv on the 1ine 9-9 of 15 of board which are folded and sealed together Fig. 8, t continuously during the making of the carton The blank l has a pasting flap 2 depending and Which. ject t0 provide a carton in Which the partition The cover section is shown between the scores 45 tongues are wedged in position in the bottom Ito and 22a, from which extends the cover lockwall of the carton, thereby increasing the rigidity ing piece 23, The locks are formed by slots 24, of the bOX and Preventing removal of the into which the trapezoidal sections 1t Tongue central partition. sections Zta extend approximately half way across These and Other Objects Will be Il'lOI'e SpeCllCalthe slots and these tongues hook 0n the under.. 50
ly Pointed out in the SpecicatiOnS and the draW- side of the trapezoidal sections and keep the cover ings forming part of this application. closed,
In the drawings: The comb or central partition 25 has slots 2S Figure 1 iS a plan 0f the carton blank Showing which intel-mesh with the slots` 5 of athe lateral the cutsand scores. partitions to strengthen them at their tops. Be- 55 tween the slots there are tapered sections 21, the
upper/ends of which terminate in a mushroom like portion 28, the necks 29 being considerably smaller "than the heads 3|) and thereby 'providing a ledgelike edge 3| which hooks into the slots I8. At the sides 32 and 32a. there are legs 33 and 33a. The depth of the comb is such that its upper end 34 will extend considerably above the top edges 35 of the lateral partitions so as to prevent the cover from contacting articles contained within the carton.
Adhesive is applied to the sections 36, 31 and 38. The blank is then double folded to form one of the legs 38, as can be seen by reference to Fig. 3. The blank is the'n folded over along the score I5, and the section 36 is pasted to the side IIL Simultaneously with the pasting of the section 36, the pasting flap is also pasted to the side Ma With the edge 39 in line with the score l5c. The section 36 forms the other leg 40. After pasting the carton will appear in knock down condition, such as is shown in Fig. 4.
Fig. 5 shows how the carton is then set up with the lateral partitions placed in a vertical position with their tabs extending through the slots I0. The comb or central partition is then put in place by pushing the heads 30 through the slots I 8, until the edges 3| hook on the under side of the bottom. The slots of the comb will then be interlocked in the slots in the lateral partitions and prevent them from bending out of shape or place.
As illustrated, the carton, when completely assembled, will have side legs extending across its length, and also a series of disconnected legs formed by the sections 30 of the comb. This construction provides a raised bottom on the carton and insures edge and point contact of the b ottom of the carton with any surface that the carton may be placed upon. I
Having thus described my invention, what. I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
. 1. A carton formed from'a cut and scored blank having a raised slotted bottom with portions oontiguous with side edges of said bottom folded and secured together forming two ply ribbed supports integral with side walls of said carton, and partition flaps integrally secured to said side walls having tongues extending through the slots in said bottom and forming additional bottom supports for said carton.
2. A carton formed from a cut and scored blank having a raised slotted bottomv with portions contiguous With side edges of said bottom folded and secured together forming two ply ribbed supports integral with side walls of said carton and partition flaps integrally secured to said side walls having tongues extending through the slots in said bottom and forming additional bottom supports for said carton, and a longitudinal partition forming member interlocking said partitions, said longitudinal member also having tongues extending through slots in said bottom member.
3. A carton formed from a blank and comprising side walls with their lower extremities folded in double folds forming supporting ribs, said folds being rigidly secured together, transverse partitions dependent from said side walls having locking tabs, a bottom extending between the upper edges of said doubly folded portions, slots in said bottom to receive said tabs on said lateral partitions and to hold them in place, and a longitudinal partition having extensions engaging under the bottom, providing means for securing said longitudinal partition against upward movement from said bottom, said extensions of said longitudinal partitions providing middle supports for said bottom, additional to said supporting ribs, preventing said bottom from making full surface contact.
4. A carton comprising a sheet folded to form a bottom .and side walls, the bottom having a series of slots each formed by partially severing a portion thereof, leaving a junction of said portion on which said portion may bend down to leave the slot, cross partitions in the carton, and a longitudinal partition interlocking with the cross partitions and bearing down thereon and having on its lower edge a series of hooking tabs snapped through the respective bottom slots to hook under the carton bottom, and being gripped by the bent down portions of the bottom.
5. A carton as set forth in claim 4, in which the'junction portions of the bottom' and side Walls are folded to form depending reinforcing and supporting ribs for the carton, each made up of two plies of'the sheet, said plies being rigidly secured together, and said ribs and the hooking tabs of the longitudinal partition collectively constituting means for supporting the bottom of the carton in raised position for effective cushioning support of articles in the cells formed by the series of cross and longitudinal partitions.
