Description

Aplr'fili 23, 1935. w. F. FLESSELLES COMBINATION TOOL Filed March l4, 1934 Patented Apr. 23, 1935 UNi'i'E Lil STATES TNT COMBINATION TOOL Application March 14, 1934, Serial No. 715,542 In Australia April '7, 1983 1 Claim.
5 rectangular and substantially rectangular bodies such as bars of metal with fiat surfaces.
The invention is intended also to function as a set square and will be found very useful for many kindred purposes.
According to the invention I provide a graduated bar or blade after the nature of a steel rule and securely mount upon one end thereof an abutment disposed at right angles to the said bar and projecting above or below the face thereof as in the form of a T or set square.
The graduated bar is provided with orifices in the form of diagonal slots preferably disposed at an angle of 45 and parallel to one another. The orifices, which are numbered, are disposed preferably throughout the length of the graduated bar portion, the main object of these being to enable the tool to be used for centering work, but they also enable it to be used as a gauge by placing a pencil or scriber in a particular hole and using the abutment as a stop against the edge of the work.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood reference will now be made to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view illustrating the invention.
Figure 2 is a detail view showing the first step in using the invention to centre a piece of work.
Figure 3 is a detail view showing the piece of Work inscribed after the operation shown in Figure 2.
Figure l is a detail view showing the second step in using the invention to centre a piece of work; in this view it will be noted that the position of the tool has been reversed to that shown in Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a detail view showing the piece of work inscribed by a diagonal line in two planes the intersection of which represents the centre point of the width of the work.
The bar which may be graduated in units of linear measurement is provided with orifices in the form of diagonal slots 2| each of which is numbered, there being nineteen slots shown in Figure 1.
An abutment 23 is secured in known manner,
for instance by a screw it, to the bar or blade 20 and enables the tool to be used as an ordinary square.
In use as a centre marker the tool is placed upon the work 25 with the fixed abutment 23 against one face thereof, the approximate width of the work is then noted upon the graduated scale and the measurement divided by two which roughly gives the position of the centre of the work 25.
The particular diagonal orifice H, which falls upon the approximate centre, is then noted by its numbers I to l9 and a datum line 26 is scribed upon the work 25 at right angles to the fixed abutment 23 say by means of the lower edge of the blade 20; or the position of the blade may be retained by the point of the scriber; also a diagonal line 2? is scribed upon the work 25 with the aid of the selected orifice 2 I as a guide leaving the work as shown in Figure 3.
ihe second operation (see Figure 4) is to place the tool on the right hand side of the work 25 with the reverse side face down upon the work and the lower edge of the blade 20 on the datum line 26 or in engagement with the scriber as before and then scribe a second diagonal line 28 with the same orifice 2! as a guide.
The work will then have the appearance shown in Figure 5 and the intersection of the two diagonal lines 2? and 28 will be found to be the correct centre of the work 25 in that particular plane.
It will be appreciated that various modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claim.
I claim.
An improved combination tool for centering rectangular and substantially rectangular bodies such as bars of metal, comprising a blade having therein a plurality of closely disposed diagonal orifices or slots preferably arranged at an angle of to the edges of said blade and parallel to each other; said blade having numerals arranged in sequence on both of its faces and adjacent to said orifices or slots, and said blade having thereon graduations indicating units of linear measurement; and an abutment securely mounted upon one end of said blade, said abutment being disposed at right angles with respect to the edges r
