H. L. GREVE PACKAGE WRAPPER Filed April 4', 1934 INVENTOR lgz'krman L. Grere ATTSRNEYS Patented Apr. 23, 1935 UNITED STATES PACKAGE WRAPPER Herman L. Greve, Hollis, N. Y., ass'ignor to In- V ternational Mailing Tube and Wrapper Comparry, Long Island City, N. Y.
Application April 4, 1934, SerialNo. 718,910
4 Claims.
an improved wrapper or envelope for containing sheets, such as stationery, carbon paper, stencil paper and the like, which may be erected from a fiat blank and assembled for use without pasting or stapling.
A further and principal object of my invention is to provide a cardboard wrapper or envelope of this character which may be employed to package sheets, such as stencil paper, and from which one or more of such sheets may be removed from one end of the envelope without disassembling the package, thereby permitting the packaged sheets to be stored, as in a desk drawer, and one or more sheets to be removed from one end of the package without removing the package from the drawer or other place of.
storage.
Further objects and advantages will more fully appear from the following detailed description and the features of novelty will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a sheet of cardboard, scored so that portions thereof may be relatively folded to facilitate erection of the envelope,
and showing the arrangement and position of the apertures formed therein and of the clips secured thereto for holding the envelope in its assembled form.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the envelope erected from the sheet and discloses how one end of the envelope may be opened to insert sheets therein or remove sheets therefrom.
I am aware that wrappers very similar to the construction here illustrated have been previously patented and desire to point out that the present improvement relates particularly to the assembled relationship of the end flaps and to the positioning and arrangement of the fastening means to provide an envelope affording the novel advantages herein set forth.
The wrapper comprises a body portion l0, side walls II,' end walls I2, cover portions I3 and I4 respectively, and end flaps I5 and I6 respectively. At the outer edge of each cover portion a recess or notch I1 is formed which divides the edge into sectionsIS and IS. At each outside corner of the cover I3 is an aperture 28 and a similar aperture is formed in the outside corner of cover I4 adjacent section it thereof. An aperture is also provided in end flap It as indicated at 2|.
A suitable metal clip 22 is fastened to end flap PATEN T OF-FIE l5 and is provided with a tongue'which passes thru the registering apertures 28 in the near adjacent corners of covers I3 and Hand isbent back to securely lock the overlapping sections it of the; cover portions. 24 is'fastened to the outer corner of cover Madjacent. the section 59 thereof and is positioned to register with the remaining aperture ZB-and aperture 2| of the end flap. I6.
In erecting the envelope, the side are first bent perpendicular to the body' portion and the end flap I5 is then inwardly folded. The
' covers I3 and It are next folded down and their sections I8 and I9 interlocked in such manner that section l8. of cover 13 will overlie endflap I5, and section ll] of cover l4 will overlie the corresponding" section of cover I3. The tongue of clip 22 is passed thruthe apertured portions of the overlying covers and bent to secure one end of the envelope in assembled position.
Because of the interlocking of the sections l8 and [9 of the covers, a reversed relation results at the opposite end of the envelope where the apertured section I9 of cover I3 will overlie the clip 24 affixed to the corresponding section of cover I4. The perforate end flap it may then be folded down and engaged by the tongue of clip 24. To gain access to this end of the envelope, therefore, only the end flap I6 need be released from engagement by the clip 24.
From the foregoing, it will be obvious that whereas end flap I5 is positioned and secured below the cover portions-in tucked relation the end flap I6 overlies the covers and may be released from clip 24 and folded back to gain access to the envelope without disassembling the opposite end of the envelope or disturbing the relation of the covers to the body portion nor to each other. When end flap I6 is open, clip 24 may-be employed to securely fasten sections I9 of the covers together and, since the clip is made of extremely pliable metal, the operations of securing and releasing the end flap it may be repeated many times without breaking off the clip tongue.
It will be noted that the ends of the covers adjacent flap I6 are recessed or cut away at 25 to facilitate the removal of sheets from the envelope and that the end flap I6 is adapted to cover the cut-away areas.
As thus constructed, I have found the envelope cheap to manufacture, simple to erect, long wearing, and well suited for the shipment and storage of stationery, stencil paper, carbon paper, and the like. In use it provides substantial convenience A similar tongued clip 5 .and end walls 10 to the user because it permits convenient piecemeal removal of its contents while maintaining the security of the original packaging. lhis latter advantage has been particularly apparent where it is desired to store the packaged sheets in a desk drawer or other confined place of storage.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A wrapper for packaging a plurality of sheets in a manner to facilitate their piecemeal removal, said wrapper being folded from a single sheet of flat cardboard and comprising a body portion, portions forming covers, and portions forming end flaps, one of said flaps being folded to underlie said covers and the other flap .being folded to overlie said covers, a. fastener carried by said underlying flap whereby the covers may be removably held adjacent one end of the wrapper, and a fastener carried by one ofsaid covers adjacent the other end of the wrapper for removably holding said covers togethers.
*2. A wrapper forpackaging a plurality of sheets ina'manner to facilitatetheir piecemeal removal, said wrapperbeing folded from a single sheet of flat cardboard and comprising a body portion, portionsformingcovers, andportions-forming end flaps, one ofv said. flaps being folded to underlie said covers and; the other flap being folded to overlie saidicover-s, afastener carried by said underlying flap whereby the covers may be removablyheld' adjacent one. end of the wrapper, and ,a fastenercarried by one of said covers adjacent :the other-endof the wrapper for removably'holdmg, said covers together, the end edge areas. of
saidscoversadjacent said overlying flap being cut ,awayand said overlying flap overextending said areas.v
3.. A-wrapper for packaging aplurality of sheets in a-manner-tofacilitate their piecemeal removal,
said Wrapper being folded from a single sheet of flat cardboard and comprising a body portion, portions forming covers, and portions forming end flaps, said covers extending to partially overlap each other, one of said flaps being folded to underlie said covers and having a fastener for removably holding the adjacent overlapping areas of said, covers together and to the flap atone end of the wrapper; one of said covers also having a fastener carried thereby adjacent the other end ,of the wrapper for removably holding the covers are together and whereby the other end flap may be removably secured in overlapped relation to said covers.
4. Awrapperfor packaging a plurality of sheets in amannerto facilitate their piecemeal removal, said Wrapper being folded from a single sheet of flat cardboard and comprising a body portion, portions forming covers, and portions forming end flaps, said covers extending to partially overlap each other andhaving notches in-the edges thereof whereby theymay be interlocked, one of said flaps being folded to underlie said covers and having a fastener carried thereby, and theadjacent overlapping areas of said covers beingperfora-tein register with saidfastenerto receive the same whereby said covers are securedtogether'and to'the flap at one end of the wrapper; one of said covers also having a fastener carried thereby adjacent the other end of the wrapper, and the other cover having a perforation formed therein positioned to register with said fastener toreceive the same whereby the covers are further securedtogether, and the other 'endflap having a perforation therein positioned to register with said lastnamed fastener whereby it may be removably sccured in overlapped relation to saidcovers.
