Description

A ril 23, 1935. R. SANNIPOLI FRUIT JAR CAP WRENCH AND RETHREADER Filed Jan. 6, 1954 INVENTOR Foyer Janrrzflolz. BY 1 ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 23, 1935 fume-TATE FRUIT JAR CAPTAND RETHREADER; Rogeri sannipoli, Detroit, Mich.
Application January 6,
This invention'relates' to fruit jar cap wrenches and rethreaders and the object of the invention is to providea wrench for fruit jar caps arranged to grip the cap and provided with handles by which the cap-may be turned to thread it off from or onto the fruit jar. 1
Another object of the invention is to provide a cap wrench having a sheet metal portion fitting into the threads of the cap and arranged to be compressed about the outer diameter of the cap.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cap wrench in which the ribs for fitting into the threads of the cap are provided with high points so as to bindingly engage in the threads of the cap.
Another object of the-invention is to provide a C-shaped cap engaging member having threads formed therein for engaging the threads of a fruit jar cap, handles being secured to the ends of the C-shaped member and a spring being provided extending about the C-shaped member and adapted to normally spread the handles apart.
A further object of the invention is to provide a fruit jar cap wrench and rethreader in which the handles are pivoted at one side of the cap engaging member and are secured to the ends of said cap engaging member whereby movement of the handles toward each other reduces the diameter of the cap engaging member.
These objects and the several novel features of the invention are hereinafter more fully described and claimed and the preferred form of constrution by which these objects are attained is shown in the accompanying drawing in which'- Fig. l is a plan view of a fruit jar cap wrench embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. v
Fig. 3 is a section taken'on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
The device comprises a substantially C-shaped cap engaging member I which is formed from sheet metal and is formed to provide threads therein corresponding to the threads formed in the usual fruit jar cap. These threads are formed at their root diameters with raised or inwardly extending portions 2 as shown in Fig. 3 which extend into the threads of the fruit jar cap and provide high points for engaging in the bottom of the threads'of the fruit jar cap.
By root diameters is meant the inner thread rivet or pivot pin 9.

shoulders! secured-to theends oi the C-shaped cap engaging member I by therivets 8 shown Figs. land 2. The ends of the handles '5 and 6 extending inwardly from the shoulders I are pivotally-i mounted on a rivet 9. supported inthe lug 4 of the member I and the handle 6 is provided with an off-set portion ID to engage over the extreme end of the handle 5 on the Each handle is provided with an aperture II and a spring wire I2 is secured in one aperture and extends about the cap engaging member I in the lower-most thread and back to the aperture I I in the other handle. This spring wire tends to spread the handles apart and also tends to spread the ends of the cap engaging member I apart to provide the space 3.
In use the space 3 allows the cap engaging member I to be positioned over the usual fruit jar cap at which time, by grasping the handles 5 and 6 these handles may be brought together to re duce the space 3 and cause the member I to engage in the threads of the fruit jar cap. As the high points 2 in the several threads are moved into engagement in the threads of the fruit jar cap, the cap is bindingly engaged between these high points so that a very effective grip is obtained. At this time, by turning the compressed handles 5 and 6 in a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction, the cap may be threaded or unthreaded from the fruit jar. When the caphas been removed it is only necessary to release the handles 5 and 6 at which time, the spring I2 and the inherent spring of the member I will spread the ends of the said member to increase the space 3 and release the cap.
In cases where the fruit jar cap threads have been bent or otherwise deformed, the handles 5 and 6 may be moved together sufficiently to engage the high points 2 in the threads of the cap but not sufficiently to tightly grip the cap. At this time, the member I may be turned in relation to the cap by turning the handles and. the high points 2 in traveling through the threads of the cap will reform the threads and will thus save caps which would usually be unfit for further use.
From the foregoing description, it becomes evident that the device is very simple and eflicient in operation, will not easily get out of order, is composed of few parts and is of consequent low manufacturing cost and provides a device which accomplishes the objects described.
Having thus fully described my invention, its
utility and mode of operation, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is- 1. In a fruit jar cap wrench and rethreader, a substantially C-shaped sheet metal cap engaging member having threads formed therein for engagingthe threads of a fruit jar cap, said C-shaped member being provided with a lug on the side opposite the ends thereof, a pair of arms pivotally mounted on said lug, each arm being also connected to one end of said C-shaped member and a spring connected to each arm and extending about the C-shaped member, said spring being arranged to normally spread the arms apart and increase the diameter of the c-shaped member.'
2. In a fruit jar cap wrench and rethreader, a substantially C-shaped cap engagingmember having threads formed thereinfor engaging the threads of a fruit jar cap, a handle secured to each end of the C-shaped member and arranged so that upon bringing the handles toward each other the C-shaped member is reduced in diameter and a wire spring connected to the handles and extending about the C-shaped member, said wire spring being arranged to spread the handles apart and increase the diameter of the C-shaped member.
3. In a fruit jar cap wrench and rethreader, a substantially C-shaped sheet metal cap engaging member having threads formed therein, the
threads being provided at the root diameters with inwardly extending portions adapted to engage in the threads of a fruit jar cap, a pair of handles pivotally mounted on the C-shaped member, each handle being connected to one end of the C-shaped member at a distance from its pivot and spring means tending to spread the handles and increase the diameter of the 0-shaped member.
4"..In a fruit jar cap wrench and rethreader, a substantially C-shaped sheet metal cap engaging member having threads formed therein, the threads being provided at the root diameters with inwardly extending portions adapted to engage in the threads of a fruit jar cap and a handle secured to each end of the C-shaped member and providing a means for decreasing or increasing the diameter of the c-shaped member.
